Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Helen M. Coldsmith

QUINCY, Pa. - Helen Maxine Shimer Coldsmith, 69, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of 13584 Williamsport Pike, Greencastle, Pa., died Sunday Aug. 16, 1998, at the nursing home.

Born Sept. 20, 1928, in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Walter Jackson and Maude Ellen Shefield Shimer.

Her husband, Calvin Eugene Coldsmith, died in 1985. They were married July 13, 1970.

She was a 1946 graduate of Greencastle High School.

She worked for Stanley Co. in Chambersburg, Pa., as a seamstress, retiring in October 1990 after 42 years.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Greencastle.

She is survived by one sister, Joyce E. Miller of Greencastle; a niece with whom she resided, Pamela L. Beaver of Greencastle; and other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty J. Oberholzer and Janice Thomas Hearn; and one brother, Donald Shimer.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. Pastor Victor E. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Memorial donations may be made to Total Life Center, c/o Waynesboro Hospital, 501 E. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Patricia J. Rees

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Patricia Jeanne Rees, 48, of 47 Fox Hill Road, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.

Born Oct. 24, 1949, in Birmingham, Ala., she was the daughter of Edgar Cuthbert Jr. and Marie J. Thibodeau Gentle of Birmingham, Ala.

She was a 1967 graduate of Bayley Ellard High School in Madison, N.J., and a 1971 graduate of West Chester University, West Chester, Pa.

She was a former elementary school teacher in Exton, Pa., and former special education teacher in Newark, Del.

She was a former member of the Lewisburg (Pa.) Art Council, a former cheerleader adviser at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, and Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pa.

She was a former Girl Scout leader in Selinsgrove.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, Shippensburg.

She was the state regional coordinator for the Oley Foundation for Parental Nutrition for 15 years.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, William Michael "Rocky" Rees; one daughter, Meghan Diane Rees of Shippensburg; two sisters, the Rev. Judith M. Hardy of Haverhill, Mass., and Diane F. McDaniel of Nashville, Tenn.; three brothers, Edgar C. Gentle III of Birmingham, Ala., Paul F. Gentle of Athens, Ga., and Thomas W. Gentle of Atlanta, Ga.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church in Shippensburg. The Rev. Joseph Celia and the Rev. Larry Sherdel officiated. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg.

Arrangements were by Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg.

Edith P. Pollock

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Edith P. Pollock, 87, of 6394 Bikle Road, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, at her home.

Born Feb. 28, 1911, in Lincoln, Neb., she was the daughter of the late Ernest E. and Alice M. Riffey Boyd.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Falling Spring Old German Baptist Church, Chambersburg.

She is survived by her husband, Alonzo B. Pollock, whom she married July 27, 1947; one daughter, Doris Benedict of Chambersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Ethel Wagner of Westphalia, Kan., and Hazel Edgecomb of Overbrook, Kan.; two brothers, Ivan Boyd of Sawyer, Kan., and Earl Boyd of Pendleton, Ind.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Jess Boyd; and one grandson.

A private family service will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. at the home of Lloyd and Doris Benedict, 2183 Anthony Highway, Chambersburg.

Services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Falling Spring Old Order German Baptist Church, Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Home Brethren will officiate. Burial will be in Falling Spring Old Order German Baptist Church Cemetery.

A viewing will be held at the Benedict home in Chambersburg on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mildred L. Kaley

STATE LINE, Pa. - Mildred Lackey Peters Kaley, 86, a resident of Morning Glory Personal Care Home, and formerly of 779 S. Allison St., Greencastle, Pa., died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at the home.

Born Dec. 22, 1911, in Springville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Hale Llewellyn and Mary Effie Lackey Peters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Coble Kaley, in 1977. They were married May 24, 1940.

She graduated as salutatorian from Boiling Springs High School, Boiling Springs, Pa., in 1928. She graduated from Beckley College, Harrisburg, Pa., in 1930, with a degree in business education. She also attended Shippensburg State Teachers College, Shippensburg, Pa.

She was first employed as an executive secretary at United Telephone Co. in Harrisburg. Later, she taught in Greencastle-Antrim School District, Greencastle in the elementary and high school grades.

She was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Greencastle, and taught Sunday school.

She skied, hiked and camped.

She is survived by two  daughters, Susan Diane Mowen and Jyl Freda Myers, both of Greencastle; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn P. Reeser; and two brothers, Hale Llewellyn "Lew" Peters Jr. and Milton Rutherford Peters.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grace United Church of Christ, 128 E. Baltimore St., Greencastle. The Rev. Donald L. McBride will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Memorial donations may be made to Grace United Church of Christ Building Fund, 128 E. Baltimore St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225; or Greencastle-Antrim School District Environmental Center, 500 E. Leitersburg St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Arrangements are by Miller-Grove Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Floyd E. Eyler

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Floyd Ephraim Eyler, 94, of 234 Strickler Ave., died of a heart attack Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Dec. 27, 1903, in Frederick County, Md., near Emmitsburg, Md., he was the son of the late Ephraim and Flora Tressler Eyler.

He owned and operated the Atlantic Service Station on Clayton Avenue for 39 years, retiring in 1968 because of poor health. He also worked at Waynesboro Knitting Mill.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the South Pacific during World War II.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Waynesboro.

He was a member of BPOE Lodge 731 in Waynesboro, 24th Infantry Division Association, National AARP and a life member of Disabled Veterans Association.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Cleovesta Oyer "Cleo" Eyler; one son, Floyd E. "Butch" Eyler Jr. of Waynesboro; one sister, Evelyn Santinelli of Maryland; two brothers, Kramer Eyler and Sterling Eyler, both of York, Pa.; two granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Eyler and Edwin Eyler.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. Chaplain William A. Robertson will officiate.

There will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Waynesboro Ambulance Squad, 48 S. Potomac St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Chanel R. Beard

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Chanel Renee Beard, 6, of 6620 Horst Road, died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Greencastle, Pa.

Born July 8, 1992, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Teal E. Beard of Greencastle and Michele L. Daugherty Hostetter of Chambersburg.

She attended Greencastle-Antrim Elementary School.

She was a member of the King Street United Brethren Church in Chambersburg.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her stepmother, Kimberly A. Beard of Greencastle; stepfather, Trent L. Hostetter of Chambersburg; two stepsisters, Ashlyn M. Hostetter of Chambersburg and Brandy L. Beard of Greencastle; maternal grandparents, Roy F. and Susan A. Daugherty of Chambersburg; paternal grandparents, Paul E. and Deborah B. Beard of Greencastle; maternal stepgrandparents, Clair E. and M. Diane Hostetter of Waynesboro, Pa.; paternal stepgrandparents, Donald L. and Peggy D. Bernhisel of Big Pool; maternal great-grandmother, Hazel I. Daugherty of Greencastle; paternal great-grandmother, Edna V. Beard of Waynesboro; great-grandmother, Kathleen M. Hartman of Chambersburg; and aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by maternal great-grandfather, Roy F. Daugherty Sr.; paternal great-grandfather, Paul E. Beard; and great-grandfather, William R. Hartman Sr., in 1974.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Otterbein United Brethren Church, 146 Leitersburg St. in Greencastle. The Rev. Lester F. Stine and Pastor Kenneth L. Gibble will officiate. Burial will be in Brown's Mill Cemetery, Antrim Township, Pa.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St. in Greencastle.

Shirley L. Aiken

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Shirley L. Aiken, 53, of 543 Hollywell Ave. and Washington, D.C., died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at the home of her mother.

Born March 4, 1945, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of Phyllis G. Young Taylor of Chambersburg and the late David Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Aiken.

She was a graduate of Chambersburg High School, Chambersburg.

She was a supervisor with National AARP in Washington, D.C. She started working for National AARP in 1971.

She was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church, Chambersburg.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Nicole D. Aiken of Washington, D.C.; a son, Kirk W. Taylor of Chambersburg; three sisters, Patricia A. Ransom, Phyllis G. Hines and Margaret E. Martin, all of Chambersburg; a brother, Gerald D. Taylor of Chambersburg; and a granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a brother, David Taylor.

Services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. James Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The viewing will be Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Walter T. Stopyra

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Walter T. Stopyra, 79, of 148 Colonial Drive, and formerly of Quincy, Pa., died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at Manor Care Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg.

Born Aug. 28, 1918, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Andrew and Sara Dlugrz Stopyra.

He worked at Lavel Aircraft in Bucks County, Pa., as a machinist. He farmed in Bucks County until his retirement.

He was a member of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, Chambersburg.

He gardened.

He is survived by two sisters, Mary Stopyra of Chambersburg and Catherine Stopyra of Philadelphia; two brothers, Stanley Stopyra of Longhorne, Pa., and Anthony Stopyra of Chambersburg; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Stopyra.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, Waynesboro, Pa.
