Lucy H. Smith

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Lucy H. Smith, 71, of 249 Siloam Road, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at her home.

Born July 29, 1927, in St. Andrews, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late James F. and Elizabeth Knowling Hibbs.

She graduated from St. John's High School, St. John's, Newfoundland.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg.

She was past president and life member of Ladies Auxiliary, Landis-McCleaf Detachment, Marine Corps League; and a member of Burt J. Asper American Legion, Post 46, all of Chambersburg.

She is survived by her husband, Lee R. Smith; four sons, James W. Frey of Boonsboro, Kenneth F. Frey of Chalfont, Pa., John D. Frey of Chambersburg and Lee Smith Jr. of Fayetteville, Pa.; four sisters, Annie Lewis and Marcella Hibbs, both of St. Andrews, Ethel Chaisson of Searston, Newfoundland, and Susan Lowther of Truro, Nova Scotia; three brothers, Sam Hibbs of Badger, Newfoundland, and William Hibbs and Gordon Hibbs, both of St. Andrews; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert G. Smith; and two brothers, Ken Hibbs and Reg Hibbs.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Daniel F. Lawler will officiate. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Viewing will be Tuesday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or American Cancer Society, Franklin County Unit, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Helen R. Morton

PALM BAY, Fla. - Helen R. Morton, 78, of 790 Bianca Drive NE, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Palm Bay Community Hospital.

Born Feb. 25, 1920, in Burnt Cabins, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harold and Una Foreman Reese.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick J. Morton.

She retired as a school cafeteria manager.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by three sons, Robert A. Reese of Indialantic, Fla., Peter J. Morton of Melbourne Village, Fla., and Fred H. Morton of Palm Bay; a sister, Vivian Reiley of McConnellsburg, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Union Cemetery. The Rev. Ted Hale will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial donations may be made to Burnt Cabins Presbyterian Church, Burnt Cabins, Pa. 17215.

Arrangements are by Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, McConnellsburg.

John H. Gallagher Jr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - John H. "Jack" Gallagher Jr., 65, of 8887 Stottlemyer Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at York Hospital.

Born July 21, 1933, in York, Pa., he was the son of the late John H. Gallagher Sr. and Verna M. Poff Fry.

He was a 1951 graduate of Hallam High School. He then attended York College and graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor of science degree in military science.

He graduated from the Army War College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He served during the Korean War and had two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded, among others, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm; Army Aviation Badge; Ranger Medal; Parachutist Badge, and the Korean Service Medal.

He retired from the Army in 1973 with the rank of major, after 20 years of service.

He subsequently worked as a civilian at Fort Ritchie in the IG office, DCSLOG and the Technology Applications Office, where he was a logistics management specialist in the Support and Analysis Division. In January, 1993 he was selected as the Civilian of the Month for TAO.

He was a member of VFW Post 7045 in Hallam, Pa.; Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge 64 F&AM in Falls Church, Va.; Scottish Rite of the Valley of Memphis in Tennessee; and AAHMES Zembo Temple AAONMS in Livermore, Calif. He had been president of Concerned Citizens Association of Washington Township. He was president of the Thrift Shop at Fort Ritchie for the past four years.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Barbara L. White Gallagher; two  daughters, Rhonda L. Haralson of Laurel, Md., and Joan E. Mohn of Quincy, Pa.; a son, John H. Gallagher III of Fairfax, Va.; a sister, Mary E. Seale of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, James E. Gallagher of Philadelphia; two grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Gallagher.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Lee E. Nunemaker Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Wrightsville, Pa., with graveside military services conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard from Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Florence M. Heard

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Florence M. Heard, 95, a resident of Shook Home and formerly of 216 High St., Chambersburg, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Shook Home.

Born Oct. 19, 1902, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Irene Lutner Porterfield.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Heard, in 1976.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Chambersburg.

She is survived by a son, Donald Heard of Piedmont, S.C.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Richard A. Randall will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The viewing will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Helen E. Miller

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Helen E. Miller, 81, a resident of Manor Care Health Services, and formerly of 770 Cumberland Ave., Chambersburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at Manor Care Health Services.

Born Dec. 7, 1916, in Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Bessie Ankerbrand Miller.

She was a graduate of Chambersburg High School; and had attended the former Shippensburg Normal School, Shippensburg, Pa. She then graduated from the former Chambersburg Business School, Chambersburg.

She retired as secretary to the superintendent of the Chambersburg Area School District. She previously was employed as a secretary at the former Swift and Co., Chambersburg.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg.

She is survived by a daughter, Julia A. Statler of Chambersburg; two grandsons, Douglas K. Statler of Shippensburg and Gregg R. Statler of Lake Worth, Fla.; three great-grandsons; and three great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

A private graveside service will be held at Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg. The Rev. Kenneth E. Wenger will officiate.

There will be no public viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Coyle Free Library, 102 N. Main St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Wanda F. Souders

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Wanda Faye Souders, 66, of 9346 Fort Loudon Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at her home.

Born Jan. 28, 1932, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Russell Coss and Frances Elizabeth Straley Zeigler.

She attended Holiness Christian Church, Marks, Pa.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Leon D. Souders; a daughter, Lyda F. Christman of St. Thomas, Pa.; two sons, L. David Souders Jr. of Boonsboro and Jonathan L. Souders of Mercersburg; a sister, Patsy Maloy of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a brother, Robert Zeigler of Mercersburg; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Roberta Zeigler and Betty Draper; and a brother, Vincent Zeigler.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Phyllis T. Goetz

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Phyllis T. Goetz, 83, of 164 N. Linden Ave., died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at Manor Care Health Center in Chambersburg, Pa.

Born July 28, 1915, in Antrim Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ralph D. and Mary Elizabeth Beard McCoy.

She was a 1934 graduate of Greencastle High School; and a 1937 graduate of Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing. She earned her bachelor of science degree in school nursing from Shippensburg University.

She was a school nurse for Greencastle-Antrim School District for 30 years, retiring in 1979.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Greencastle.

She was a member of Greencastle AARP Chapter; Franklin County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees; Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital Alumni Association; and Greencastle Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth J. Goetz, whom she married April 23, 1938; a daughter, Saundra Starliper of Greencastle; a sister, Betty Creager of Waynesboro; a brother, Charles A. McCoy of Greencastle; a granddaughter; a grandson; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester McCoy and James McCoy.

Graveside services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Route 16 West, Greencastle. Pastor David J. Armstrong will officiate.

At her request, there will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Building Fund of First United Methodist Church, 45 N. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225; or Rescue Hose Co. 1, 842 S. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Arrangements are by Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Marie M. Shank

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Marie Martha Barnhart Shank, 83, of Lincoln Way East, who died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, was preceded in death by her  Father, James McClellan.

Harry W. Hamil

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Harry W. Hamil, 62, of 12539 Bain Road, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Manor Care Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Sept. 20, 1935, in Chambersburg, he was the son of Maudeline Souders Hamil of Chambersburg, and the late Theodore Hamil.

He was a 1953 graduate of James Buchanan High School, Mercersburg. He attended Hagerstown Business School.

A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he served in the Korean War.

He was employed by the former Fry Coal and Stone Co. of Mercersburg. He then was employed by Morrison-Knudsen Construction Co. of Boise, Idaho, a company that built airports, dams and quarries. A specialist in quarries, he worked in Vietnam, South America, Central America, Iran and Saudi Arabia. He and his wife owned and operated Hardrock J Beef Farm of Mercersburg for 24 years.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mercersburg; and attended Welsh Run Church of the Brethren, Welsh Run, Pa.

He was chairman of Montgomery Township Planning Commission; a member of Franklin County Farm Bureau; and was a Farm Service Agency community committeeman.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ruth Witter Hamil, whom he married June 23, 1973; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Welsh Run Church of the Brethren, 11420 Welsh Run Road, Mercersburg. The Rev. Henry Hunsberger and the Rev. W. David Kent will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

The family requests the omission of flowers.
