Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

John Marecek

John Maracek, 91, of 48 E. Howard Ave., Coaldale, died Monday in the Geriatric Center of Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. He was the husband of Anna (Vavra) Marecek.

He was employed as a maintenance man with several companies in New York before retiring.

Born in Czechslovakia, he was a son of the late John and Anna (Jagos) Marecek.

He was a member of St. John Evangelical Slovak Lutheran Church, Lansford.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter Anna, wife of Victor Mikus of Lansford; and a half-son, Walter Vavra of Venice, Fla.

He was the last member of his immediate family.

The August M. Gulla Funeral Home, 130 E. Ridge St., Coaldale, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Antoinette C. McElroy

Mrs. Antoinette C. McElroy, 86, of Allentown, died Sunday in the Sacred Heart Hospital, Allentown. She was the widow of John W. McElroy.

She was a garment worker for Sty;e Tech, Allentown, before retiring.

Born in Slatington, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Pegliano) Costa.

She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Allentown.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary, wife of Ronald Haburner of Hamburg, N.J., Edith, wife of Albert Kohler of Rockaway, N.J., and Josephine, wife of Kenneth Morgan of Allentown; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Kenneth H. Oswald

Kenneth H. Oswald, 31, of 5463 Second St., Cementon, died Sunday when he was struck by a piuckup truck and was knocked down an embankment.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of Henry D. and Donna A. (Christman) Oswald, with whom he resided.

Surviving in addition to his parents is a sister, Pamela J. of Walnutport.

Arthur J. Longley Sr.

Arthur J. Longley Sr., 79, of 2297 Whitehead Road, Nazareth, died Monday in the Muhlenberg Hospital Center, Bethlehem. He was the husband of Stella C. (Erkinger) Longley. They observed their 55th wedding anniversary in June.

He was a laborer for various construction companies, last working for the former Haney Construction Company until retiring in 1980.

Born in Easton, he was a son of the late William and Esther (Bailey) Longley.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in Algeria, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Sicily and Tunisia. He was a Purple Heart recipient.

Longley was a well-known banjo player for country western and bluegrass bands in the area, including the Bill Kerchner Band and the Cement Dusters.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Arthur J. and Kenneth J., both of Nazareth; two daughters, Lana Lobb of Nazareth and Lisa, wife of Philip Malone of Wind Gap; a brother Earl of Bath; a sister, Olive Hamm of Lehighton; two half-sisters, Ruth Nagy of Catasauqua and Ida, wife of Donald Rehrig of Bath; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Leona E. Kulhavy

Mrs. Leona E. Kulhavy, 83, of 318 W. Snyder Ave., Lansford, died Tuesday morning in the Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale.

The Holmes-Griffiths Funeral Home, 200 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Mary H. Eames

Mrs. Mary H. Eames, 93, formerly of Lansford, died Monday in Weatherwood, Weatherly. She was the widow of J. Wesley Eames.

Surviving are a sister Ella, wife of Andrew Mokry of Lansford; and several nieces and nephews.

The John Puschak Funeral Home, 208 First St., Coaldale, is in charge of the arrangements.

Louis L. Savarese

Louis L. Savarese, 88, of 2029 Westgate Drive, Bethlehem, formerly of Allentown, died Tuesday in the Easton Hospital. He was the husband of the late Angelina (Esposito) Savarese.

He and his wife owned and operated the former Savarese Market, Allentown, for 32 years before retiring in 1969.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Joseph and Josephine (Russo) Savarese.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Allentown.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph R. of Allentown and Louis A. of Bethlehem; two daughters, Josephine J., wife of Frank Kudla, and Madeline M. Burdock, both of Walnutport; a sister, Anna Hanna of Philadelphia; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rose Recchia, who died in 1992.

Mrs. Joseph E. Policelli

Mrs. Marie S. Policelli, 73, of Bangor, died Wednesday in the Easton Hospital. She was the wife of Joseph E. Policelli.

She was a piano and organ teacher for 50 years.

Born in Roseto, she was a daughter of the late Leviticus Sabatine and Antoinette (Capone) Sabatine Falcone.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Parish of Bangor and Roseto, where she was its choir director for 25 years. She was the organist at her church and at the former Roseto Presbyterian Church for 59 years before retiring last year.

Mrs. Policelli was featured during World War II in the June 1944 issue of "Homefront Magazine" as one of the "Fairest of the Month."

She was a member of the Bangor Women's Club.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Sharon Faelten of Bethlehem and Valerie Blakeslee of Brodheadsville; four sons, Duane M., Marc L. and Barry J., all of Bangor, and Scott P. of Roseto; a sister, Jeanne Ronco of Bangor; two stepbrothers, Frank of Fleetville, Lackawanna County, and Ralph of Lower Mount Bethel Township; 13 grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Howard W. Kunkel

Howard W. Kunkel, 82, of Kempton, died Tuesday in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Anna M. (Greenawalt) Kunkel.

He worked in the maintenance department of the Caloric Corporation's former Topton plant for 30 years before retiring in 1981.

Born in Lynn Township, he was a son of the late Warren and Beulah (Rausch) Kunkel.

He was a member of Jacob's United Church of Christ, New Tripoli, where he was a former deacon.

Kunkel was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member and former volunteer for the Northwestern Ambulance Association, New Tripoli, and a member of the Kempton Fire Company and Kempton Rod and Gun Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Jane A., wife of Richard Warmkessel of Mertztown, and Janet R. Reeves of Reading; a son, Warren H. of Kempton; a sister Miriam, wife of Clifford Reichel of Kutztown; two brothers, Clarence of Kempton R.2 and Herman of Allentown; and five grandchildren.

E. Elmer Kreger

E. Elmer Kreger, 80, of Gilbert, died Thursday in his home. He was the husband of the late Ruth M. (Hawk) Kreger.

He worked in the soils department of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for 16 years before retiring in 1979, and previously was a farmer in Gilbert for 31 years.

Born in Gilbert, he was a son of the late Ervin E. and Daisy A. (Everett) Kreger.

He was a 60-year member of Salem United Church of Christ, Gilbert, where he was a former councilman, serving for 40 years. He was also chairman of the building and grounds committee when the current church was under construction.

Kreger served on the Monroe County Conservation District from 1952-86 and was its chairman for 25 years. He continued as an associate member.

He also served on the Monroe County General Authority for more than four years and on the Chestnuthill Township Planning Commission for about 30 years.

The deceased was appointed in 1966 to the Board of Monroe County Park and Recreation and was its chairman for about 25 years.

He was a member of the West End Fair Association, having been a director from 1961-97.

He was a charter member and Hauptman for 16 years of the Grundsow Lodge No. 6; a board member of the Gilbert Cemetery Association for 35 years; and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 780, Swiftwater.

Surviving are a son Richard of Fort Pierce, Fla.; a daughter, Karen Chain of Gilbert; two sisters, Grace Schmieg and Marguerite Wagner, both of Allentown; five grandchildren and a step-great-granddaughter.

He was also preceded in death by a brother LeRoy; and a sister, Arlene Dorshimer.

The Kresge Funeral Home, Rt. 209, Brodheadsville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Roland M. Peters

Roland M. Peters, 63, of 411 Willow Ave., Walnutport, died Thursday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Marilyn M. (Hausman) Peters. They observed their 42nd wedding anniversary in April.

He worked in the maintenance department of Stanwood Mills, Slatington, for 10 years before retiring last year, and previously was a molder for the former Dieter's Foundry, Cherryville, for 31 years.

Born in Walnutport, he was a son of Mrs. Mary (Kroboth) Peters of Walnutport and the late Clark M. Peters.

The deceased was a member of Weisenberg Lutheran Church, New Tripoli.

He was a Navy veteran.

Surviving in addition to his widow and mother are two daughters, Patricia A., wife of James Pavelco, and Pamela J., wife of John D. Skeath, a brother, Ernest C., and two sisters, Joanne M., wife of Edward Buzinski, and Nancy M., wife of Delbert Hahn, all of Walnutport; three grandchildren and a step-grandson.

Mrs. Carl Pauff

Mrs. Nancy Lee Pauff, 54, of 404 W. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning, died Thursday in the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. She was the wife of Carl Pauff. They observed their 34th wedding anniversary in July.

Born in Pottsville, she was a daughter of Daniel Billman of Tamaqua and the late Jean (Weston) Billman.

Surviving in addition to her husband and father are a son, Carl Jr. of Whitehall Township; two brothers, Jeff of Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, and Joel of Tamaqua; two sisters, Cheryl Miller in Colorado and Denise Restivo of Bethlehem; her stepmother, Louise Billman of Tamaqua; and nieces and nephews.

The Bruce A. Nalesnik Funeral Home, 57 W. Center St., Nesquehoning, is in charge of the arrangements.

John F. Sabol Sr.

John F. Sabol Sr., 76, of 1133 E. Mahanoy Ave., Mahanoy City, died Thursday morning in Manor Care Health Services, Carlisle. He was the husband of the late Grace (Eckrode) Sabol.

He was employed as a coal miner for Pagnotti Coal Company, Mahanoy City, and later as a highway maintenance worker for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation until retiring in 1983.

Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was a son of the late Andrew and Mae (Caufman) Sabol.

He was a Army veteran of World War II, having served as a military policeman on Iwo Jima with the 81st Air Service Group.

Sabol was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, F. and A.M. Lodge No. 357, the Travelers Protection Association, Tryan Club, Washington Hook and Ladder, Gas House Gang and Order of the Eastern Star, Puritan Chapter No. 126, all of Mahanoy City.

He was a Past High Priest of Mizpath Royal Arch Chapter 252, a life member of the Anthracite Joshua Association, and a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 74, all of Mahanoy City; a member of Caldwell Consistory, Valley of Bloomsburg, and the Mahanoy Area High School Band Boosters; and past commander of Ivanhoe Commandery No. 31, Tamaqua.

Surviving are a son, John Jr. of Portland, Ore.; a daughter Margaret, wife of Joseph Blickley of Brockton; four brothers, Joseph of Lansdale, Andrew of Allentown, Mickey of Mahanoy City and Edward of Locust Valley; four sisters, Dorothy Levey and Mrs. Clarence (Helen) Capiga, both of Mahanoy City, Mrs. Joseph (Elizabeth) Roos of Lansdale and Mrs. Arthur (Irene) Brown of Point Pleasant, N.J.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

The Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, 1323 Centre St., Ashland, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Lona

Mary Lona, formerly of 225 W. Second St., Hazleton, died Thursday evening at the Hazleton-St. Joseph Medical Center, where she was a patient for 10 days.

Born in Trentino, Italy, she was a daughter of the late Pio and Cecelia (Benal) Micheloni, and had resided in the Hazleton area her entire life.

She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and the Christian Mothers of the Parish, both of Hazleton.

Surviving are two daughters, Cecelia, wife of Stephen Rubacky of Hazleton, and Jean, wife of Robert Smith of Lake Harmony; a son Joseph of Ocean City, N.J.; a brother Tullio of Tyrol, Italy; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by six brothers, Valentio, Guiseppi, Carlo, Micheloni, Enricka, Rudolpho and Cornelio.
