Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Shirley D. Card

Shirley D. Card of Muskegon Michigan, formerly of Emporium, died June 12, 2006 at Mercy General Health Partners, Muskegon General Hospital, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Butler on Aug. 3, 1932, the daughter of Beatrice and Mountclair Daugherty. She was the widow of Ralph E. Card who passed on in May 1994.

Shirley is survived by two daughters, Tina Kahn of Muskegon Michigan and Candie Kaziska of Port Allegany; two sons, Bill Daugherty of Buffalo, NY and Robert Dunbar of Georgia; 12 grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren and a sister, Nancy Hipchen of Kane.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Ann Dunbar.

There will be no services.

Marlene Carnovale

Marlene G. Carnovale, 78, of 317 Oak Street, Emporium died Sunday, (June 11, 2006), at the Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys, following a long illness.

Born November 17, 1927 in St. Marys, she was the daughter of John and Sabina Hassellman Wolfel. On April 3, 1948 she married Bruno A. Carnovale at the Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg.

In addition to her husband, surviving are her four daughters: Debra (David) Gschwendtner of St. Marys, Maria (Dennis) DiBello of St. Leonard, Md., Kathy Carnovale of Emporium, and Laurie (James) CarnovaleHorrocks of York, Pa., two sons, Frank (Paula) Carnovale of Bloomfield Hills, Mi. and Michael (Elva) Carnovale of Orange, Ca. Marlene especially loved her twelve grandchildren: Paul Gschwendtner, Alison, Zachary, Lucas, and Julia Carnovale, Madeline and Alexander Carnovale, Patrick and Aubrey DiBello, and Angela, Nicholas and Keith Horrocks. She is also survived by two sisters, Virginia Struble of Reistertown, Md. and Germaine (Bud) Meyer of St. Marys, Pa. and one brother, Herbert (Lois) Wolfel of Kersey, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Richard, Leander and Gilbert Wolfel and five sisters, Louise Walker, Florence Johnson, Rita Beers and two infant sisters.

Marlene attended St. Marys Catholic schools and resided in Emporium for 58 years.

She was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, the CD of A, the Rosary Society, a Eucharistic minister and the Parish Coordinator of the Cameron County Cursillo.

Marlene lived for the love of her grandchildren, children, husband, relatives and friends. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sharing recipes, sewing, gardening, growing flowers, social gatherings and traveling.

Visitation was held Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Edward M. Barnett Funeral Home, PC with a vigil service at 8:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mark's Catholic Church with Father Paul Siebert, pastor, officiating. Burial was in St. Mark's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Community Nurses, Barbara Moscato Brown Public Library or the St. Mark's Catholic Church in Emporium.

Howard Reed

Howard Reed Sr., 85, of Rich Valley Road died Tuesday (April 4, 2005) in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre.

Born May 15, 1920, in Shippen Township, he was the son of Willis A. and Mary Cora Purdy Reed. On January 10, 1947, in Rew, he married Myrl Carpenter, who survives.

A lifelong resident of Cameron County, Mr. Reed attended Emporium High School and was a Cameron County Game Commission deputy for 25 years. In 1970, he retired from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, where he was employed for 21 years as a food and cover foreman.

He was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church of Emporium and was a member of AARP and the Pennsylvania Association of retired State Employees. He was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the VFW.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Reed is survived by three sons, Herbert W. Reed of Clarksville, Tenn., Howard J. Reed Jr. of Atlanta Ga., and Gerald E. Reed of Emporium; eight grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; one sister, Lettie Bailey of Erie; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Friends were received Friday (April 7) in the CoppersmithCondon, Funeral Home. Funeral and Committal services will be held today, (Saturday, April 8) at 11 a.m. in the Rich Valley Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Jason Claydon, pastor, officiating. Burial is in the Moore Hill Cemetery, Shippen Township.

Full Military Honors will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Cameron County Ambulance Service or the Rich Valley Wesleyan Church.

Mary K. Wheeler

Mary K. Wheeler, 57, of 328 South Ave., Bradford, died Friday, (June 9, 2006) at her residence.

Born in St. Marys on Aug. 28, 1948, she was a daughter of Charles K. and Kathryn E. (Narby) Wenzel.

On July 4, 1970 in St. Mark's Catholic Church in Emporium, she married Robert L. Wheeler, who died July 21, 1998.

She was a graduate of Cameron County High School in 1966 and a 1970 graduate of Lock Haven University.

Mrs. Wheeler was employed for 16 years in the Bradford Area School System as a Learning Support teacher in the elementary schools. She was a Union representative for the teachers, and a member of the Bradford Area Education Association.

For many years she volunteered her time with the Special Olympics.

Surviving are three daughters: Missy Llewellyn, Julie Barrett, and Nikki Wheeler, all of Bradford; one son, Kyle Wheeler, also of Bradford; and four grandchildren, Payton Llewellyn, Skylar Llewellyn, Maxwell Barrett and Reese Barrett.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, (June 13) at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard Church, Bradford, with the Rev. Leo Gallina, pastor, as celebrant. Burial was in St. Bernard Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the R.L. Wheeler Scholarship Fund at the Bradford Area School District.

Donald Ives

Donald D. Ives, 86, of 497 Hillcrest Drive, Emporium, died unexpectedly at his residence Thursday, (May 18, 2006).

Born September 28, 1919 in Driftwood, he was a son of Merle H. and Ina Smith Ives.

Mr. Ives was a lifelong resident of Cameron County. He attended Austin schools.

On February 5, 1944 he married Sylvia V. Tartaglia at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Driftwood.

He was an electronic technician in the Commercial Engineering Department of Sylvania Electric. He retired in 1982 after 41 years of service.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Donald J. (Mary) Ives of Flowery Branch, Georgia and Robert E. (Carol) Ives of Russell, Pa., three grandsons, Jeffery Ives, Brian Ives and Cameron Ives and many nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Sylvania Quarter Century Club and the Emporium Mens Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Merle H. Ives Jr. and Gerald R. Ives.

Friends were received Sunday at the Edward M. Barnett Funeral Home, PC from 6 to 8 p.m. A vigil service was held at 7:45 p.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church with Father Paul Siebert as celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Marks Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mrs. Alma J. Fritz

Mrs. Alma J. Fritz, 88, of Tamaqua R.3, died Thursday morning in the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Lehighton, where she was a resident. She was the widow of Alvin S. Fritz, who died on May 22.

Born in West Penn Township, she was a daughter of the late Amandus and Adilla (Balliet) Shellhamer.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ congregation of St. Peter Lutheran and U.C.C. Church, Tamaqua R.3.

Surviving are a sister, Mildred S., wife of Charles Miller of Andreas R.1; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Bernice Femyak, who died in 1995.

The Robert S. Nester Funeral Home, Rt. 309, Snyders, is in charge of the arrangements.

Ernest E. Smith

Ernest E. Smith, 82, formerly of West Catasauqua, died Thursday in Cedarbrook, South Whitehall Township. He was the husband of the late Hilda M. (Gimbel) Smith.

He was an assembler for the former Dent Hardware Company, Fullerton, for more than 30 years before retiring in 1970.

Born in West Catasauqua, he was a son of the late Edward B. and Anna S. (Dobler) Smith.

He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Whitehall Township.

Smith was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post 367, Hellertown.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Ann, wife of Dale Stumpp of Whitehall; and two brothers, Harry F. of Christmans, Penn Forest Township, and Raymond G. of Hockessen, Del.

Michael Potash

Michael Potash, 92, of 27-1/2 Main St., Coxeville, Beaver Meadows, died Wednesday in Hazleton General Hospital. He was the husband of Victoria (Piasecki) Potash.

He was employed by York Avenue Foods, Philadelphia, until retiring in 1969.

Born in Hazleton, he was a son of the late Andrew and Ann (Fortuna) Potash.

He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Hazleton.

Potash served in the Army during World War II.

Surviving in addition to his widow are nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Welky and Mary Tomasick; and a brother.

Mrs. Jean A. Gerhart

Mrs. Jean A. Gerhart, 76, formerly of 219 Fourth St., Weatherly, a guest at Weatherwood, Weatherly, died Wednesday in the nursing home.

Born in Delano, Schuylkill County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Dora (Wetzel) Gasser.

She graduated from the former Delano High School in 1939 and was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Weatherly.

She was a private first class in the Women's Army Corps during World War II, having been stationed at the Army Ground Forces Replacement Depot, Camp Adair, Ore. She received the Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Campaign Medal.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Garber of Weatherly; two grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Fern Zapotocky; and two brothers, Russell and Harry.

Pocalyko services

A private memorial service for Peter N. Pocalyko, 77, of 730 Center Ave., Jim Thorpe, who died Thursday in Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale, will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, in St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 21 Race St., Jim Thorpe., with the Rev. Kenneth S. Umbehocker officiating. A private interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Jim Thorpe.

The Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Margaret A. Allesch

Mrs. Margaret A. Allesch, 71, of 45 W. Howard Ave., Coaldale, died Thursday in the Hometown Nursing Center, Tamaqua R.2. She was the wife of the late John Allesch.

Born in Mahoning Township, she was a daughter of the late John and Bertha (Murphy) Ambrek.

Mrs. Allesch was a member of St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, Tamaqua, and a 1943 graduate of Tamaqua High School.

She is survived by seven sons, John of White Bear, Edward E. of Stroudsburg, James of Lehighton, Thomas of Bakersfield, Cal., Matthew and Christopher, both of Coaldale, and Frank of Tamaqua; six daughters, Mrs. Kathy Woodward and Antoinette Allesch, both of Coaldale, Mrs. Jacqueline Fredericks of Barnesville, Mrs. Melinda Tuckey and Mrs. Margaret Barcasky, both of Hazleton, and Mrs. Dorothy Weicker of Tamaqua; a brother, Matthew Ambrek of New Ringgold; 28 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Allesch; a brother, John Ambrek; and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Sporch.

The E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Norman Rimbey

Mrs. Grace Rimbey, of 224 Creekside Manor Drive, Lehighton, died early this morning in her home. She was the wife of Norman Rimbey.

The Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Fourth and Iron sts., Lehighton, is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Smith

Virginia L. Smith, 69, of Blythewood, SC., Formerly of Port Allegany, died Tuesday (May, 16, 2006) in the Providence Hospital, North East, Columbia, SC.

Born June 10, 1936, in Aiken, she was a daughter of Vernon L. and Margaret A. Greeley Bells. On April 4, 1958, in Farmers Valley, she married Roy Smith Sr., who survives.

Mrs. Smith was a longtime resident of the area, moving to South Carolina in 1999 with her husband.

She was employed by Sylvania Co. (now GTE), formerly of Emporium, and later with Viko Co. (now Ethan Allen Co.) of Eldred.

She was a former member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post #6391, Port Allegany.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Roy Smith Jr, of Port Allegany and Michael A. Smith of Emporium; three daughters, Darla D. Bailey of Portville, N.Y., Ramona L. Follett of Olean, N.Y., and Karen D. Baker of Blythewood, SC; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Thomas L. Bells of Kent, N.Y.; one sister, Nancy Lyons of Milton; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held Saturday (May 20) at 2 p.m. in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where the Rev. Michael Cluver, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Port Allegany, officiated.

Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.
