Eldred Dale Bodzer

Lifelong member of California Church of Nazarene

Eldred Dale Bodzer, 82, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003.

She was born April 21, 1921, in West Pike Run Township, a daughter of Daniel and Ida Caton Staley.

Mrs. Bodzer was a lifelong member of California Church of the Nazarene.

Her husband, Frank Bodzer Sr. died in 1977.

Surviving are four daughters, Charlotte Yonash of Jacksonville, Fla., Marjorie Quail and Donna Philips, both of Daisytown, and Barbara Lechene of Patton; a son, Frank Bodzer Jr. of Jefferson; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Deceased are seven brothers and sisters.

Alfred R. Finlay

Former Houston resident was member of Independent Club

Alfred R. Finlay, 71, of Waynesburg, formerly of Houston, died at 9 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2003, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, following a long illness.

He was born January 14, 1932, in Pittsburgh, a son of Susanna Finlay.

Mr. Finlay worked for a number of years as a deliveryman for Resnik Cleaners in Crafton.

He was Presbyterian and a member of Independent Club of Houston.

His wife, Edna Remaley Finlay, died June 24, 2001.

Mr. Finlay was the last of his immediate family.

Billie B. Kelley

Mrs. Billie B. Kelley, 86, of Lake Placid, Fla., died Monday, December 15, 2003.

She was born December 4, 1917 in Fairmont, W. Va. and had been a resident of Florida since 1978, coming from Ambridge.

Mrs. Kelley is survived by four daughters, Barbara J. Habedank of Monaca; Patricia Ann Dougal of Denver, Colo.; Lois J. Weaver of California; and Jay V. Osborne of Lake Placid, Fla.; tehn grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Bradenton, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

George Kuharcik

Gateway Coal Co. retiree from Mather

George Kuharcik, 78, of Mather, died Monday, December 15, 2003, in his home.

He was born October 2, 1925, in Dry Tavern, a son of John and Mary Hrin Kuharcik.

Mr. Kuharcik served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

He retired as a coal miner in 1987 from Gateway Coal Co. and was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 6330.

Mr. Kuharcik was a member of American Legion Post 954 of Jefferson.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

On July 4, 1948, he married Bernice McMannes, who died May 18, 1995.

Surviving are a daughter, Georgeann Gardner of Mather; two sons, Larry Kuharcik of Mather and Kevin Kuharcik of Rices Landing; three grandchildren, Krista Bedilion, Michelle Sheets and Jeremy Kuharcik; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth Russian of Inkster, Mich.

Deceased are two brothers, John and Mike Kuharcik; and two sisters, Mary Pribula and Anna Karpinecz.

Reed B. Lewis

World War II vet was Holbrook native

Reed B. Lewis, 79, of 44 Cyland Ave. East Palestine, Ohio died at 9:05 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2003 at The Medical Center in Beaver.

Mr. Lewis was born June 25, 1924 in Holbrook, a son of John E. and Claudia Scott Lewis and had lived in East Palestine since 1988, coming from Beaver Falls.

He graduated from Center Township High School, Rogersville, in 1942 and then from the Garfield Business Institute in Beaver Falls.

He worked many years in the payroll department of the former James and Laughlin Steel Corporation in Aliquippa and retired from LTV Steel Company in June 1984. He was a member and elder of the First United Presbyterian Church of East Palestine. He was a member of Union Lodge #259 F & AM, New Brighton, PA. Mr. Lewis also served ‘in the US Army during World War II in the Asiatic Theater.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Martha Jane Ealy, whom he married February 23, 1948; two sons, William R. (Debbie) Lewis of Petersburg, Ohio and Kevin B. (Diane) Lewis of London, Ontario, Canada; a sister, Mrs. Marilyn Alfieri of St. Mary’s; three granddaughters, Jennifer Kalcevic, Amanda Lewis and Emily Lewis; two step grandsons, Brian and Kevin Patrone; two step great grandsons, Austin and Chase; and seven nieces and nephews.

Frances “Cricket” Kendall Abraham
Masontown native
Frances “Cricket” Kendall Abraham, 90, of Fairchance, Pa., died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at home with her family by her bedside.

She was born July 1, 1913, in Masontown, Pa., daughter of Morris Christopher Kendall and Margery Gribble Kendall.

“Cricket” was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fairchance where she attended the Mixed Adult Sunday School Class, Presbyterian Woman’s Association, was a Choir Member for many years, and handled the Church Flower Fund.

She was a member of the Uniontown Hospital Ladies Auxiliary Fairchance Branch, Order of the Eastern Star where she was a recipient of The Miriam Award Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem and also a member of Margaret E. Caven Shrine 42A.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Robert Abraham on March 20, 1971, a son, Richard D. Abraham on March 2, 1999, two sisters, Agnes Christy Gans and Mary Loretta Brooks, three brothers, James Treasurer Kendall, Edgar Thompson Kendall and Otto Lloyd Kendall, and her parents.

Surviving are two children: Robert Abraham and his wife, Joan, and Randy Abraham and his wife, Susan, all of Fairchance; a daughter-in-law, Judy Abraham of Fairchance; six grandchildren: Michelle Dulik of Morgantown, W.Va., Scott Abraham and his wife, Lori, and Jennifer Howell and her husband, Ron, all of Fairchance, Bobbi Jo Sisler and her husband, David, of Uniontown, Edward Abraham and his wife, Cathy, of Deer Lake, Leah Abraham of Fairchance; and 12 great grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Laura L. Berdine

Helped build “Communities of Caring”

Laura L. Berdine, 83, of Washington, formerly of Greene County, died at 6:45 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2004, in Washington County Health Center, Washington, following a lengthy illness.

She was born March 14, 1921, in Aleppo, a daughter of William G. and Odella Ashbrook Hewitt.

Mrs. Berdine was a homemaker who worked for several years at G.C. Murphy & Co. in Washington and Waynesburg.

While residing at Thomas Campbell Christian Center in Washington, she was involved with building “Communities of Caring” through Third Presbyterian Church adult day care group.

Mrs. Berdine attended Church of Christ in New Freeport.

On September 3, 1937, she married Paul R. Berdine, who died November 8, 1978.

Surviving are a son, Garrett E. Berdine of Washington; two grandchildren, Gary Berdine and Darla Grabiak; and a great-grandson.

Deceased are three sisters, Evelyn Clutter, Elaine Slider and a sister who died in infancy.

Cecelia Bohan

Lifelong Greene County resident

Cecelia (Tillie) Bohan, 76, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, in Shelbyville, Ky.

She was born December 16, 1927, in Crucible, a daughter of Joseph and Anna Vignovitch.

Mrs. Bohan was a lifelong resident of Greene County.

Her husband, John Bohan, is deceased.

Surviving are three sons, a daughter, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Deceased are four sisters.

A memorial fund in her name is being established for purchase of a memorial token for James Graham Brown Cancer Center, Department of Radiation Oncology in Louisville, Ky. Expressions of sympathy can be sent in care of Hall-Taylor Funeral Home, 1185 Main Street, Shelbyville, KY 40065.

Mary Frances Cassidy

Clarksville resident

Mary Frances Cassidy, 79, of Clarksville, died Friday, April 9, 2004, in Brownsville General Hospital.

She was born May 4, 1924, in Lampasas, Texas, a daughter of Thomas Robertson and Cora Frances Webb Robertson McCleskey.

Surviving are four children, Mary Jane Cassidy of Uniontown, Jerome Cassidy of Baltimore, Md., Margaret Ann Cooper of Fairchance and James Edward Cassidy of South Carolina; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold McCleskey of Texas; and a sister, Lela Mae Clark of Uniontown.

Deceased are her stepfather, Thomas McCleskey; her husband, Robert Jessie Cassidy; a brother; and a sister.

Ivy B. Crouse

Active nonagenarian from Waynesburg

Ivy B. Crouse, 97, of Waynesburg, formerly of Graysville, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2004, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, after being in failing health for the past year and a half.

She was born May 9, 1906, in Center Township, Greene County, a daughter of James Franklin and Catherine Jane (Jennie) Throckmorton Breese.

Mrs. Crouse resided in the Graysville area from 1945 until moving to Waynesburg in 1982.

She was a member of Allegheny Wesleyan Church in Waynesburg, where she served as treasurer until the age of 93.

Mrs. Crouse enjoyed volunteering and was a volunteer at Greene County Memorial Hospital until the age of 90.

She enjoyed baking salt-rising bread and raising a vegetable garden, which she did until the age of 95, and quilting as long as her health permitted.

On May 11, 1927, she married Layton Crouse, who died March 18, 1976.

Surviving are two sons, Howard Crouse of Graysville and Roy Albert Crouse of Waynesburg; a brother, James Franklin Breese of Waynesburg; six grandchildren, Ellen Carlson, Stephen, Allan, Lewis and Glenn Crouse and Teresa Roberts; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Deceased are a son, Ernest D. Crouse; a brother, Wesley Breese; and eight sisters, Catherine Lucy Breese, Anna M. Tharp, Mary Johnston, Fannie Conklin, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Crouse and triplet sisters, Ruby Breese, who died in infancy, Ruth Bartolovich and Pearl Conkey.

Margaret S. Wilson

Margaret S. Wilson, 84, of Winter Haven, Fla., and formerly of the Fairchance area, died Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004, at the Health Center of Haines City, Fla.

Born Dec. 12, 1919, in Lafayette, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Michael Fell and Mary Shanaberger Wagner.

She attended Fairchance High School, had worked for a time as a clerk at Metzlers Department Store, and for the past 20 years, Margaret lived her life-long dream of spending her retirement in Florida, enjoying a number of cruises and other travels to visit family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Mervyn S. Wilson; daughter, Nancy Lee McElroy; brother, Patrick Smith; and sisters, Betty Hudock, Geraldine Petrucci, Ruth Beull, and Patty Morris.

She is survived by children, Robert McElroy of Springfield, Mo., Peggy Delong of Detroit, Mich., and Pat Clark of Evansville, Ind.; the following brothers and sisters, Bill Smith of Ruffs Dale, Tom Smith of Finleyville, Bill Fell of Florida, Art Fell and Robert Fell, both of Michigan, Shirley Capicotto of Elrama, Elli Horgos of Sharpsville, Linda Stiteler of Florida., Margaret Ungurean of Illinois, and Florence Wade of Indiana; five stepchildren, Linda Wilson Tingler of Ohio, Mervyn A. Wilson of Carmichaels, Barbara Wilson Tamburello of Springboro, Pa., James Wilson of Princeton, W.Va., and Patricia Wilson Adams of Mapletown; and by many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
