Clyde S. Polhemus Jr.

Resident of Carmichaels

Clyde S. Polhemus Jr., 78, of Carmichaels, died at 7:55 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, in his home.

He was born October 5, 1925, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., a son of Clyde S. and Dora A. Rogers Polhemus.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Mason Polhemus; a son, Christopher Polhemus of Carmichaels; a daughter, Pamela K. Houtz of Lexington, Ky.; and four grandchildren, Christopher and Emily Polhemus and Jessica and Philip Houtz.

There was no public viewing. Private interment took place Saturday, April 10, in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, was in charge of arrangements. To sign the online guestbook, please visit www.legacy.com.

Lorna Kay Gaines

Member of New Freeport Baptist Church

Lorna Kay Leek Gaines, 57, of New Freeport, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, as a result of injuries received in a fire at her home.

She was born March 1, 1947, in Glen Dale, W.Va., a daughter of the late Samuel Grant “Babe” Leek and Betty Lee Coss Leek.

Mrs. Gaines had lived most of her married life in the New Freeport area.

She previously had attended Bethany United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir. At the time of her death, she attended New Freeport Baptist Church.

Mrs. Gaines previously had been employed by Little Forest Nursing Home in Akron, Ohio, Jane Frances Nursing Home in Ravenna, Ohio, and was most recently employed as a van driver for handicapped students in Ravenna School District.

She enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, crocheting and playing with a Gameboy. She was a homemaker.

On December 23, 1962, she married James Albert Gaines, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Sherri Nulph of Aliquippa and Connie L. Gaines and Alice Hewitt, both of Waynesburg; three sons, Mark A. and Michael P. Gaines, both of Core, W.Va., and Matthew “Newt” Gaines of Pittsburgh; three sisters, Sana Rose Sells of New Freeport, Brenda Sue Leek of Orlando, Fla., and her twin sister, Sharon Childers of Youngstown, Ohio; a brother, Larry R. Leek of Lancaster, Texas; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are two grandchildren, Samantha Lee Sloan and Christopher Elihu Hoag; and a brother, Dale Eugene Leek.

Wilma Scott Paul

Second-grade teacher at East Franklin School

Wilma Scott Paul, 82, of Waynesburg, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, in Beverly Health Care, Waynesburg.

She was born January 19, 1922, in Franklin Township, a daughter of James Fremont and Euphen Smith Scott.

Mrs. Paul was a 1942 graduate of Waynesburg College and a lifelong resident of Franklin Township.

She retired as a second-grade teacher at East Franklin School in Central Greene School District.

Mrs. Paul was a member of First United Methodist Church in Waynesburg.

On August 10, 1942, she married Benjamin F. Paul, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Sharon Huggett of Orlando, Fla.; three sons, Randall S. Paul of New Freeport, Kevin S. Paul of Waynesburg and Craig F. Paul of Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Eloise Fuller of Surfside Beach, S.C.; and six grandchildren, Zachary, Amity, Callie and Morgan Paul, Courtney Schroyer and Jenny Ackman.

Adam P. Jablonski

Carmichaels resident

Adam P. Jablonski, 45, of Carmichaels, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, in Canonsburg General Hospital.

He was born September 15, 1958, in Homestead.

Mr. Jablonski was a special friend to all he knew.

Surviving are his mother, Janine Wiley of Carmichaels, and his father, Mark Walters of Clarksville; maternal grandparents, Herb and Mary Baughman of Langeloth; and paternal grandmother, Nell Walters of Clarksville; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ursula Hanko

Rices Landing resident

Ursula (Shirley) Hanko, 86, of Rices Landing, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.

She was born May 26, 1917, in Rices Landing, a daughter of Leonard and Alexandria Rimkus Drockton.

Mrs. Hanko was Catholic and a homemaker.

On March 1, 1939, she married Stephen A. “Sharkey” Hanko, who died January 31, 1989.

Surviving are six children, Ursula Rozsa of Woodbridge, Va., Stephen (Dan) Hanko of Rices Landing, Stanley (Don) Hanko of Rogersville, Paul Hanko of Morgantown, W.Va., Candace Frazier of New Castle and Debra Burr of Portersville; a sister, Catherine Chuey of Fairfax, Va.; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Deceased are a son who died at birth; three brothers, Leonard Drockton, Anthony Drockton and Peter Drockton; and two sisters, Stella Orban and Josephine Foster.

Donald Harvey Heckerman

U.S. Navy vet was retired truck driver

Donald Harvey Heckerman, 69, of Greensboro, died Saturday, April 10, 2004, in Greene County Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 26, 1935, in Dover, Ohio, a son of Wilbur John Henry and Bertha Alice Reed Heckerman.

Mr. Heckerman was a retired truck driver and had driven across the United States for several companies.

He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Heckerman was a former resident of Oklahoma and Texas. He had resided in Greensboro since 1990.

On February 14, 1982, he married Beverly J. Eckert Wesley, who died March 9, 2002.

Surviving are a stepdaughter, Anna Marie Wesley of Tampa, Fla.; two stepsons, Clyde Daniel Wesley of Lebanon, Ohio, and George Scott Wesley of Clarksville; four stepgrandchildren, Clyde Daniel Wesley Jr., Arthur Brian Freel Jr., Christie Nicole Freel and Jimmy Lee Dickens Jr.; and a sister, Mildred R. Lowther of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Andrew J. “Jack” Morris

Raised in Waynesburg

Andrew J. “Jack” Morris, 88, of Lancaster, died Wednesday afternoon, April 14, at Willow Valley Glenn following a brief illness.

Born in Alabama, he was raised in Waynesburg, the son of the late Thomas Henry and Laura Elms Morris.

He was married to the late Rita Mae Rottmund Morris, who died in September of 1994.

He had also lived in Baltimore, Houston and Caracas, Venezuela. He also traveled throughout the world.

He retired in 1980 as president of Crown Central Petroleum, where he had worked for over 30 years.

Mr. Morris was a 1937 graduate of Waynesburg College and he attended the University of Pittsburgh.

In 1999, Waynesburg College dedicated the A. J. and Rita Morris International Center housed in the Stover Campus Center, in honor of the establishment by Mr. Morris of the Morris Scholarship program.

He is survived by six nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister Ruth Lunette Scherrer.

Saundra E. Buttermore

Saundra E. Buttermore, 66, of Carmichaels, died Saturday, November 20, 2010, in her home, after a one-year illness.

Mrs. Buttermore was born September 12, 1944, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Pauline Sasko Engott of Waynesburg and the late Joseph Raymond Engott.

On June 21, 1979, she married Robert Buttermore, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Kelley Foreman and husband Troy of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Laurel Amelia and Ava Noel Foreman; a stepson, Jonathan Buttermore and wife Amie of Carmichaels; two stepgrandsons, Robbie and Jacob Buttermore; and a brother, Joseph Raymond Engott Jr. and wife Sandy of Richmond, Va.

Mrs. Buttermore was a graduate of West Virginia University. She was a member of the synchronized swimming team at WVU.

She taught physical education in Central Greene School District, Waynesburg, for 30 years. Mrs. Buttermore coached girls basketball at Central Greene and won a WPIAL Championship.

She played on several World Tournament softball teams and was an avid golfer.

Thomas W. Mering

Thomas W. Mering, M.D., 92, of Waynesburg, died Sunday, November 21, 2010, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

He was born September 19, 1918, in Spokane, Wash., a son of the late Ralph Hartley Mering and Mary Elizabeth Watkin Mering.

On November 13, 1943, he married Beatrice Elizabeth Trump, who died May 1, 2007.

He was a 1939 graduate of Gonzaga University. In 1943, he graduated from Marquette University School of Medicine. He completed his medical internship in Pittsburgh.

During World War II, he served as a battalion surgeon in the U.S. Army in France, Germany and Belgium. Following the war, he completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Mering came to Waynesburg in 1950 to practice medicine with Dr. Bruce Austin. In 1952, he began his private practice in obstetrics and gynecology, which he operated in Waynesburg until his retirement in 1995. He was a former chief of staff at Greene County Memorial Hospital.

He was a past president of Waynesburg Little League Baseball, Football and Wrestling Boosters. He also was a member of the Waynesburg Optimist Club, Waynesburg Lions Club, American Legion Post 330 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 4793.

Surviving are six children, Karen Nopwaskey of Waynesburg, Ann Celio of Houston, Thomas W. Mering Jr. of Waynesburg, Scott Alan Mering of Cypress, Calif., Michelle Simpson of Waynesburg and Brian Paul Mering of Irwin; 9 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Theresa Shriver

Theresa Shriver, 82, of Holbrook, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, November 20, 2010, in Monongalia General Hospital, W.Va.

She was born December 7, 1927, in Moween, a daughter of the late Vincenzo James and Mary Ferrante Tenaglio.

She loved to attend Rock Family Church, where her son, Rick, is pastor in Morgantown, W.Va. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards and was an avid WVU football fan.

She leaves behind her beloved cat, Molly.

Surviving are two sons and their spouses, Jack and Mary Ellen Shriver of Schnecksville and the Rev. Rick and Lydia Shriver of Morgantown; two daughters and their spouses, Cynthia and Jim Lyle of Holbrook and Lynda Ann Shriver and companion Steve Swaim of Sedona, Ariz.; a sister and husband, Jenny and Tony Coppa of Newport News, Va.; a sister-in-law, Betty Tenaglio of Weirton, W.Va.; and 11 grandchildren and their spouses.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are five brothers, Charles, Paul, Dan, Jimmy and Joe Tenaglio.

The family requests memorial donations be made in her memory to American Kidney Foundation, 6110 Executive Boulevard, Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852, or Rock Family Church, 1202 South Pierpont Road, Morgantown, WV 26508.
