Garnet Ann Throckmorton

Garnet Ann Throckmorton, 74, of Waynesburg, went to be with the Lord at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 13, 2010, in Donnell House, Washington.

She was born Sunday, November 17, 1935, in Mather, a daughter of the late John B. and Elizabeth Twyford Dennis.

Mrs. Throckmorton spent her entire life in Greene County and was a graduate of Jefferson High School Class of 1953.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Waynesburg for several years and had attended First Church of the Nazarene in Waynesburg since 2005. While at First Baptist Church, she had served on various boards and committees, had been the youth choir director for 10 years and had sung in the adult choir from 1963 to 2001. She also initiated the organ concert that showcased local organists.

She enjoyed singing and had sung at various functions, including singing for Gov. Scranton. Mrs. Throckmorton had served as the minority inspector for the East Franklin Township Election Board for 14 years. She was a volunteer at Southwest Regional Medical Center Auxiliary and was known for her support of our troops and country and was tagged the Flag Lady by Miles Davin.

One of her favorite things was having family parties around her pool and spending time with her entire family.

She worked for First Federal Savings and Loan as a clerk for 11 years and as online coordinator of the bank for 19 years, retiring in 2001.

Her husband, James Daryl Throckmorton, whom she married August 7, 1954, died October 17, 2005.

Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Denise and Rick DeMeo of Washington and Cristy and Lee Wise of Waynesburg; three sons and their wives, Daryl L. and Robin B. Throckmorton of Waynesburg, Ernest J. and Lynne Throckmorton of Baden and Randy Lee and Athena Throckmorton of Clifton, N.J.; a sister, Rosalie Dennis of Stow, Ohio; a brother and his wife, Ronald M. "Chick" and DJ Dennis of Lima, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Joy Dennis of Lima, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a sister, Dorcas Dennis, and a brother, John T. Dennis.

The family asks that memorials be made to Donnell House, 10 Leet Street, Washington, PA 15301, or First Church of the Nazarene, 115 Deerfield Lane, Waynesburg, PA 15370.

Helen M. Ford

Helen M. Ford, 85, of Waynesburg, died at 5 p.m. Wednesday, October 13, 2010, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home in Waynesburg.

She was born Saturday, June 27, 1925, in Washington, a daughter of the late Robert S. and Elizabeth Beacroft Mounts.

Mrs. Ford was affiliated with First United Methodist Church in Waynesburg.

She was a member of Waynesburg Senior Citizens and was on the site committee. She recently was awarded the Presidential Service Award for her work at Senior Citizens.

Mrs. Ford also was a member and past president of Business and Professional Women in Washington. For 43 years, she was a member of Claysville American Legion Auxiliary.

She enjoyed gambling, gardening, reading, making sock monkeys, going to flea markets and auctions.

Mrs. Ford worked in administration both for the Observer-Reporter and Washington Agricultural Stabilization Office. She was personnel director for JC Penney in Washington. She then sold real estate for Century 21 Giant Oaks. She retired in 1980.

Her husband, Alvin E. Ford, died August 18, 2004.

Surviving are two sons and their wives, Randy and Mary Jo Ford of Lone Pine and Gary L. and Kathy Ford of Lone Pine; five grandchildren, Tom Ford, Lorie Pentland, Andy Ford, Ginger Ford and Troy Smith; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Sutherland of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a son, Carl Ford; a sister, Leona Gray; and two brothers, Robert L. Mounts and Ray Mounts.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to James W. Hanna Education Scholarship Fund at Washington & Jefferson College. Please make checks payable to Washington & Jefferson College, Attn: Education Department, 60 South Lincoln Street, Washington, PA 15301. On the memo line, please indicate "Hanna Scholarship Fund."

John E. Hougland

John E. Hougland, 80, of Waynesburg, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., following a brief illness.

He was born May 21, 1930, in Rutan, a son of the late Allison and Sallie Iams Hougland.

Mr. Hougland spent his entire life in Greene County.

He was a graduate of Center Township High School.

Mr. Hougland was a deacon in First Christian Church of Waynesburg for many years.

He worked for Columbia Gas Transmission for 47 years, retired for two weeks and returned to work as a consultant. He had just completed a job for Otis Eastern of New York, acting as a liaison between Otis Eastern and Columbia Gas.

Mr. Hougland served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing baseball and softball, bowling and playing bingo. Most of all, he enjoyed working in his wood shop.

Surviving are his wife, Pat; daughters Cynthia (Bill) Triboletti of Voorhees, N.J., Melissa (James) Walker and Beth (Chad) Moore, all of Waynesburg; stepchildren Michelle (Greg) Blosser of Jefferson, Christine (Kirby) Owens and Chuck (Julie) Booth, all of Waynesburg; ten grandchildren; two great-grandsons; sisters-in-law Sandy (Mike) Morris, Sharon (Dave) Knisely, Karen (Dave) Bosworth and Robin (Ron) Rose; and brothers-in-law Sam (Michelle) Simpson and Bobbie (Joyce) Simpson.

Two brothers died in infancy.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.

Jennie E. Mercer

Jennie E. Mercer, 80, of Waynesburg, died Friday, October 15, 2010, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

She was born September 22, 1930, in Acosta, Somerset County, a daughter of the late Russell and Ivy Kerr Deems.

Mrs. Mercer was a graduate of Jefferson High School.

She was a licensed practical nurse at Rhea's Rest Home in Waynesburg as well as doing private duty for Miss Anna Meighen. She had been a waitress at Union Restaurant, Chicken House and Southern Pancake House. She also had worked at Foodland in Waynesburg.

Mrs. Mercer was a member of Eagles Club 598 and Moose Lodge

Saundra E. Buttermore

Saundra E. Buttermore, 66, of Carmichaels, died Saturday, November 20, 2010, in her home, after a one-year illness.

Mrs. Buttermore was born September 12, 1944, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Pauline Sasko Engott of Waynesburg and the late Joseph Raymond Engott.

On June 21, 1979, she married Robert Buttermore, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Kelley Foreman and husband Troy of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Laurel Amelia and Ava Noel Foreman; a stepson, Jonathan Buttermore and wife Amie of Carmichaels; two stepgrandsons, Robbie and Jacob Buttermore; and a brother, Joseph Raymond Engott Jr. and wife Sandy of Richmond, Va.

Mrs. Buttermore was a graduate of West Virginia University. She was a member of the synchronized swimming team at WVU.

She taught physical education in Central Greene School District, Waynesburg, for 30 years. Mrs. Buttermore coached girls basketball at Central Greene and won a WPIAL Championship.

She played on several World Tournament softball teams and was an avid golfer.

Thomas W. Mering

Thomas W. Mering, M.D., 92, of Waynesburg, died Sunday, November 21, 2010, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

He was born September 19, 1918, in Spokane, Wash., a son of the late Ralph Hartley Mering and Mary Elizabeth Watkin Mering.

On November 13, 1943, he married Beatrice Elizabeth Trump, who died May 1, 2007.

He was a 1939 graduate of Gonzaga University. In 1943, he graduated from Marquette University School of Medicine. He completed his medical internship in Pittsburgh.

During World War II, he served as a battalion surgeon in the U.S. Army in France, Germany and Belgium. Following the war, he completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Mering came to Waynesburg in 1950 to practice medicine with Dr. Bruce Austin. In 1952, he began his private practice in obstetrics and gynecology, which he operated in Waynesburg until his retirement in 1995. He was a former chief of staff at Greene County Memorial Hospital.

He was a past president of Waynesburg Little League Baseball, Football and Wrestling Boosters. He also was a member of the Waynesburg Optimist Club, Waynesburg Lions Club, American Legion Post 330 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 4793.

Surviving are six children, Karen Nopwaskey of Waynesburg, Ann Celio of Houston, Thomas W. Mering Jr. of Waynesburg, Scott Alan Mering of Cypress, Calif., Michelle Simpson of Waynesburg and Brian Paul Mering of Irwin; 9 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Theresa Shriver

Theresa Shriver, 82, of Holbrook, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, November 20, 2010, in Monongalia General Hospital, W.Va.

She was born December 7, 1927, in Moween, a daughter of the late Vincenzo James and Mary Ferrante Tenaglio.

She loved to attend Rock Family Church, where her son, Rick, is pastor in Morgantown, W.Va. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards and was an avid WVU football fan.

She leaves behind her beloved cat, Molly.

Surviving are two sons and their spouses, Jack and Mary Ellen Shriver of Schnecksville and the Rev. Rick and Lydia Shriver of Morgantown; two daughters and their spouses, Cynthia and Jim Lyle of Holbrook and Lynda Ann Shriver and companion Steve Swaim of Sedona, Ariz.; a sister and husband, Jenny and Tony Coppa of Newport News, Va.; a sister-in-law, Betty Tenaglio of Weirton, W.Va.; and 11 grandchildren and their spouses.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are five brothers, Charles, Paul, Dan, Jimmy and Joe Tenaglio.

The family requests memorial donations be made in her memory to American Kidney Foundation, 6110 Executive Boulevard, Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852, or Rock Family Church, 1202 South Pierpont Road, Morgantown, WV 26508.

Curtis E. Johnson

Curtis E. Johnson, 92, of Spraggs, formerly of Garards Fort, died at 3:40 a.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010, in Golden Living Center, Waynesburg.

He was born April 27, 1918, in German Township, Fayette County, a son of the late Lindsey and Addie Pearl McCann Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a 1936 graduate of Mapletown High School and resided in Greene County most of his life. He was raised in Greensboro and resided in Garards Fort from 1975 until 1999, when he moved to Spraggs to live with his son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Patty Johnson.

Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater and received five Battle Stars.

He attended Greensboro Baptist Church, Mapletown Methodist Church and Mount Calvary Methodist Church in Garards Fort.

Mr. Johnson was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6303, Greensboro, and worked as a carpenter. He was a member of United Carpenters of America Local 541 of Washington since 1952.

On September 20, 1941, he married Elinor Black, who died May 20, 2000.

Surviving are a son, Roger C. Johnson and wife Patty of Spraggs; two daughters, Sandra K. Johnson and Susan J. Work, both of Greensburg; a stepson, Douglas Black and wife Joann of Carmichaels; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are four brothers, Chester Johnson, Myers Johnson, Clifford Johnson and Cliffton Johnson; and a sister, Elsie P. Masters.

Joseph E. Hughes

Joseph E. Hughes, 85, of Carmichaels, died at 2:31 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010, in the home of his nephew and niece, Jeffrey and Terri Donaldson in Carmichaels, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born May 27, 1925, in Redstone Township, Fayette County, a son of the late William and Mary Ann Dornack Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was a graduate of Brownsville High School and resided in Carmichaels for the past 34 years.

He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-17 bombardier in Europe with the 8th Air Force stationed in Mendlesham, England.

Mr. Hughes was Roman Catholic.

He worked as an accountant for Greer Industries Inc., Morgantown, W.Va.

Mr. Hughes enjoyed attending auctions, farming and flower gardening.

He was a life member of Knights of Columbus Court 2954 and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 548 and American Legion Post 295 in Brownsville.

Mr. Hughes was a sweetheart to his family and to those that knew him.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including his caregivers, David Donaldson and Jeffrey and Terri Donaldson, all of Carmichaels, and Wendi Jo Kinross of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Deceased are three brothers, John Hughes, Robert Hughes and Jerry Hughes; and three sisters, Margaret Freel, Mary Jane Newcomb and Anna Jean Donaldson.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Amedisys Hospice, 2183 McCellandtown Road, Masontown, PA 15461.
