Earl J. Brown
Earl J. Brown, 85, of RR 1, Klingerstown, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Sunbury Community Hospital, Sunbury. Born at Leck Kill, September 8, 1917, he was a son of the late George E. and Sarah Kahler Brown. He was a retired farmer, and a 1936 graduate of Upper Mahanoy Township High School, Leck Kill. He was a life-long member of Salem United Church of Christ Church at RR 1, Klingerstown, where he had been a former consistory member, a long-time member of the choir, was an adult Sunday School teacher, and a member of the former Salemaires Quartet. He was a former member and had served as secretary-treasurer of the Salem Cemetery Association for many years.
He was a member of Gideon’s of Pottsville, a former Mahanoy Joint School Board Director; a former Farm Bureau Director; a member of the PA Farm Bureau; and a former Agway Committeeman. He was also a member of the Mahantongo Fire Company, Pitman, and the Klingerstown Fire Company.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lee Emory Brow, who died February 2, 1975. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Verna M. Masser Brown; two daughters, Doris Lucas of RR 1, Klingerstown, and Ferne Brown of Alpharetta, GA; a son, Allen Brown of Chambersburg; a sister, Edna Keim of Ephrata; a brother, Lester Brown of Lititz; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 28, from his church at RR 1, Klingerstown, with the Rev. Mark Rothermel officiating. Interment was in Salem Cemetery, RR 1, Klingerstown. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem United Church of Christ Church Memorial Fund, at RR 1, Klingerstown, 17941. The Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, RR1, Klingerstown, was in charge of arrangements.
Jeff B. Anspach
Jeff Barry Anspach, 57, of Pine Grove, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Lebanon Valley Medical Center, Lebanon. Born in Pottsville, August 20, 1945, he was a son of the late William and Helen Wenrich Anspach. He was preceded in death by two sons, Keith and Bryan.
Surviving are his wife, the former Brenda L. Hatfield; two sons, Steve of Pine Grove, and Ryan of Lebanon; a daughter, Sheila Anspach of Lebanon; a brother, Larry of Lebanon; a sister, Nancy Ulsh of Summit Station; and three grandchildren.
Memorial service were held Thursday, March 27, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Veterans Cremation Society, Harrisburg, was in charge of arrangements.
John S. Anderson, Jr.
John Samuel Anderson, Jr., 47, of Shamokin, died Monday, March 24, 2003, at his home. Born in Sunbury, December 1, 1955, he was a son of John S. Anderson, Sr., of Shamokin, and Lila Smeltz Anderson of Dalmatia.
He was a 1973 graduate of Line Mountain High School. He was a self-employed salesman. Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Joan Williard of Pillow, and Linda Gill of Klingerstown; three brothers, James H. of Kissemmee, FL, and Jeffrey and Jody, both of Trevoton; a companion, Kathy Reeder of Shamokin; and a number of nieces and nephews. Services were held at the convenience of the family from the James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow.
Mary I. Adams
Mary I. Adams, 82, of Elizabethville, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Harrisburg Hospital.
Born in Halifax March 8, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Samuel J. and Annie G. Lebo Bowman.
She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Halifax. She was also a member of the Halifax Garden Club; TOPS; the Red Hat Society; and the camp club of the Lykens Valley Roamers.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna L. Shughart and one sister, Sara Shadel. Surviving are her husband, Julius "Frank" Adams of Elizabethville; a daughter, Freda J. Wentz of Mechanicsburg; a son, Albert J. Lebo of Fort Plain, NY; three brothers, Walter "Ned" Bowman of Fisherville, Paul E. Bowman of Elizabethville and Fred Andrew Bowman of Mesa, AZ; sisters, two Freda Nye of Hummelstown and Theresa A. Williams of Middletown; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Wednesday, March 26, at 3 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, Fisherville. Viewing will be Wednesday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Taft T. Hoffman
Taft T. Hoffman, 35, of Halifax, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, as a result of a vehicular accident on Route 225.
Born in Harrisburg, he was a son of Dallis and LouAnn Riland Hoffman of Halifax.
He was a 1985 graduate of Halifax High School and then received an Associate Degree in Electronics from Thaddeus Stevens School of Technology. He worked at ABF Trucking and was a member of Teamsters Local No. 776. He was a member of Halifax U.M. Church; and the NRA.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran. Surviving in addition to his parents, are his wife, Anne K. Zech Hoffman; two daughters, Haley Marie and Meghan Elizabeth, both at home; paternal grandfather, Loraine Hoffman of Halifax; maternal grandmother, Emily Riland of Halifax; twin sister Heather Miller of Halifax; sister, Gretchen Gallaher of Swedesboro, NJ; his father-in law and mother-in-law, Luther and Dorothy Zech of York; and six nephews and three nieces.
Services were held on Saturday, March 22, at Halifax U.M. Church, 105 Wind Hill Drive. Interment with military honors was in the church cemetery.

Troy E. Hoffman
Troy E. Hoffman, 22, of Valley View, died as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Saturday evening, March 22, 2003, in Hegins.
Born at Good Samaritan regional medical Center, Pottsville, on May 15, 1980, he was a son and step-son of Susan M. Hoffman Reed and Steven P. Reed of Hegins.
He was employed as a screener at Metal Industries, Gratz. He was a 1999 graduate of Upper Dauphin High School, Elizabethville, where he had been a former member of the wrestling team. He was a life-member of the Erdman Gun Club.
He was of the Protestant faith. Surviving in addition to his mother and step-father are a step-brother, Scott Reed of Hegins; maternal grandparents, William and Ruby Block Hoffman of RR 1, Klingerstown; aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning, March 27, at 11 a.m. from the Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, RR 1, Klingerstown, with the Rev. Mark Rothermel officiating. Viewing will be held on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home and also on Thursday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be made in the Salem Cemetery, RR 1, Klingerstown. The Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, RR 1, Klingerstown, is in charge of arrangements.
Evelyn C. Lenker
Evelyn C. Lenker, 71, of Millersburg, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, in the Harrisburg Hospital.
Born in Millersburg, she was a daughter of the late Boyd and Florence Hoy Lenker.
She was retired from the former Muskin Shoe and Kinney Shoe Factories. She was a member of Hebron U.M. Church, Millersburg.
Surviving are three brothers, Richard of Mechanicsburg, and Frank and Robert, both of Millersburg; two sisters, Dolores Leiser of Millersburg and Shirley Lenker of Millersburg; and a niece.
Services were held Thursday, March 20, at the Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Millersburg. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg.

Jack E. Miller, 75, of Carsonville, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at his home.
He had retired as a construction foreman from Rogele Inc., Harrisburg. Surviving are a companion, Shirley L. Schell; and a brother, James Bordner of San Antonio, Texas.
Services were held Monday, March 24, from John R. Shultz Funeral Home, Lykens, with the Rev. Keith J. Schmuck officiating. Interment was in St. James Cemetery, RD Halifax.

Marian E. Miller
Marian E. Miller, 80, of Dalmatia, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at her home.
She was a daughter of the late Ray E. and Jennie M. Tschopp Phillips.
During World War II, she worked at Brubakers in Millersburg for the Department of Defense, and worked until 1955 for various shirt and shoe factories in the area.
She was a member of the Stone Valley United Church of Christ, Dalmatia; was a member of the Ladies Aid within the church. She also had memberships in the Hickory Corners Ladies Auxiliary and the Lower Northumberland County Senior Citizen's Group.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Darla Sue Miller and a brother, George Phillips.
Surviving are her husband, Cloyd J. Miller of Dalmatia; two daughters, Debbie J. Klinger and Tamie N. Scherbik, both of Dalmatia; a brother, Julius Phillips of Dalmatia; five sisters, Margaret Duttry of Sunbury, Myrtle Wright of Millersburg, Thelma Dreibelbis of Dalmatia, Betty Buss of Fleetwood and Evelyn Hommel of Dalmatia; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Wednesday, March 26, at Hoover Funeral Home, Inc., Millersburg at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Sweitzer's Memorial Cemetery, Berrysburg. Viewings will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 7-9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m.

Stella Murphy
Stella Murphy, 85, of Pine Grove, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at home.
Born in Mahanoy City, July 15, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Helen Conchis Shelumsky. A graduate of Gilberton High School, she lived in Maizeville most her life, moving to Pine Grove 10 years ago.
She was proprietor of Shelumsky's Cafe, Maizeville, for many years.
She was a member of Our Lady of Siluva Roman Catholic Church, Maizeville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James in 1975; a brother, Joseph Shelly; two sisters, Alice Mensick and Anna Bleyzgis Kline.
Surviving are a daughter, Marianne Debuski of Pine Grove; two granddaughters; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services were held Tuesday, March 25, from Louis Truskowsky Funeral Home Inc., Mahanoy City. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Siluva Church. Interment was in the parish cemetery, Frackville.
Guy H. Paul
Guy Harlen Paul, 73, of Rebuck, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at his residence.
Born in Rebuck, August 13, 1929, he was a son of the late Levi Harlen and Katie Louise Adams Paul.
He was a self-employed farmer. He was a member of Rebuck Wesleyan Church, Rebuck.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley E. Adams Paul; three sons, David of Winfield, Robbie of Millersburg, and Ty of Milton; a daughter, Diane Troup of Millersburg; a brother, Adam Paul of Dornsife; seven sisters, Marie Falck and Merle Inkrote, both of Shamokin Dam, Mahala Kahler of Millersburg, Corrine Gaul of Hamburg, Lena Mattern of Leck Kill, Florence Snyder of Elizabethville, and Marvianna Snyder of Herndon RD.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Religious serves were held Tuesday, March 11, at Rebuck Wesleyan Church, Rebuck, with the Rev. Larry Baney officiating. Interment was in Himmel’s Church Cemetery, Rebuck.

Elizabeth A. "Betsy" Phillips, 56, of Hegins, formerly of Pine Grove, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at home.
Born in Pine Grove, January 9, 1947, she was a daughter of Trena G. Fegley Schaeffer, Pine Grove, and the late Monroe R. Schaeffer. She was a graduate of Pine Grove Area High School and attended Harrisburg Business School.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are a son, Kelly Matthews, Stevens; two brothers, Lee Schaeffer of Kansas City, Mo., and Dr. Edward Schaeffer of Powderly, Texas; nieces and nephews.

Lloyd Smeltz Jr.
Lloyd Smeltz Jr., 79, of Valley View, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.
Born in Williamstown, December 3, 1923, he was a son of the late Lloyd Sr. and Elsie Warfield Smeltz.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He retired as a foreman in the ingot plant at the former Cressona Aluminum Co., Cressona.
He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Congregational Church, Pitman, a former member of its consistory and a charter member of Tower City Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Doris Warlow, who died in 1975; and his second wife, the former Ruby Harring, who died in 2000.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth of Hegins; a daughter, Judith Rodichok of Valley View; two sisters, Bette McCready of Williamstown, and Margaret Kelly of Akron; four grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, March 20, from Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, with the Rev. Ken Schira officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Tower City.
