C. Loren Hendershot
C. Loren Hendershot, 88 of Selinsgrove, formerly of Elizabethville, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2004, at the Penn Lutheran Village.
Born on June 5, 1915, in Rockland Twp., Venango County he was a son of the late Charles William and Julia May Sutley Hendershot.

He was the former proprietor of the Kepler Home in Elizabethville for 22 years. He was a member of Gideons International, the Christian Businessmans Association. He was the former supply pastor for the United Methodist Church in the Erie Conference. He also served as pastor in Western Pennsylvania for the Lower Hillville Church, Hill City Church and the Robinson Chapel in Parker.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel T. Hendershot, who died January 8, 2004; a brother Robert; and Sister Phyllis Kinnear.

Surviving are a son Charles J., Hendershot of Millersburg; and a daughter Kathryn F. Hendershot of Halifax.

Services were held at Reigles Bible Fellowship Church, Millersburg on Friday, Feb. 27. Interment was in Maple Grove cemetery, Elizabethville. Hoover Funeral Homes Inc., Elizabethville, was in charge of arrangements.

Robert F. S. Hain
Robert Francis Simon Hain, 81, formerly of Elizabethville, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at the Susquehanna Lutheran Village, Millersburg.
Born in Elizabethville, January 5, 1923, he was a son of the late Francis and Carrie Stepp Hain.

He was a retired self-employed upholsterer, mechanic, and excavator. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Elizabethville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye E. Hoffman Hain, who died in 1997; a brother, Charles Hain; and a sister, Ruth Williams.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra A. Deibert of Hegins, and Beverly K. Shaffer of Hershey; and three grandchildren.

Religious services were held Saturday, Feb. 28, from the James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow, with the Rev. Nancy Weiss and the Rev. Charles Oldland III, officiating. Interment was in Maple Grove cemetery, Elizabethville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Suite 202, Harrisburg PA 17110, or to the American Heart Association, 1019 Mumma Rd. Suite 200, Harrisburg, PA 17110. James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow, was in charge of arrangements.

Clair M. 'Pal' Freeman
Clair M. "Pal" Freeman, 74, of Pine Grove, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon.
Born in Donaldson, October 19, 1929, he was a son of Bessie L. Long Freeman, Tremont, and the late Harry M. Freeman. He was a graduate of Tremont High School, Penn State University and Dickinson Law School.

He was an Army veteran.

He owned and operated Freeman Insurance Agency, Pine Grove, for 49 years.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Donaldson, a former advocate of Blue Mountain Boy Scout Camp, Pine Grove Rotary Club, Pine Grove Masonic Lodge 409, was a 32nd degree Mason and member of several insurance associations.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 48 years, the former Geraldine M. Grace; a son, Clair M. of Pine Grove; a sister, Betty L. Fomon of Iowa City, Iowa; five nieces and nephews; eight grandnieces and nephews.

Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25, from Lord Funeral Home Inc., Pottsville. Interment was in Our Lady of Calvary cemetery, Hillside, Pottsville.

William H. Etsweiler
William Howard Etsweiler, Jr., ED.D., 84, of Carlisle, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, in the Hershey Medical Center.
Born in Millersburg on June 14, 1919, he was a son of William Howard Etsweiler, Sr. and Prudence Wingard Etsweiler.

He was a graduate of Millersburg High School and received his Bachelor's degree from California State Teachers' College in 1942. He earned Master's and Doctor's degrees from Penn State University in 1949 and 1956, respectively.

During his career, Dr. Etsweiler taught Industrial Arts, and was a guidance counselor and high school principal in several Pennsylvania school districts, including Huntingdon School District, Susquehanna Township School District, Conemaugh Township School District and Lansdowne-Aldan School District. He also served as Dean of Academic Affairs at Spring Garden College, Philadelphia, prior to moving to the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, from which he retired as Executive Director in 1981. He served as Vice Chairman of the Council on Regional School Accrediting Commissions, and as a member of the National Study of School Evaluation and other school evaluation-related organizations.

Beyond the academic field, Dr. Etsweiler worked in industry as a compliance inspector, management consultant, tooling engineer, and as a curriculum consultant for the Curriculum Branch, Bureau of Naval Personnel. Dr. Etsweiler's military career included service in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander in 1971.

He was a Past President of the Union Athletic Association in Lansdowne; a member of the Horizon Center Orchestra, Reading; and a member of the former Millersburg Boys Band.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Sophia M. Powell Etsweiler; two daughters, Joan Elaine Logan of Hampden, CT and Victoria Ann Gabis of St. Clairsville, OH; a son, William Andrew Etsweiler of Carlisle; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 27, in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hummelstown, with the Rev. Richard A. Ruff officiating. Interment with military honors was in the Indiantown Gap National cemetery.

The Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., Hummelstown, was in charge of arrangements.

James R.Crossley III
James R. Crossley III, 40, of Wiconisco Twp., died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at home.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran for 12 years and served in Ernest Will and Desert Shield/Desert Storm campaigns. He was awarded the Kuwait Liberation Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, 2 National Defense Service Medals, 2 Navy Good Conduct Medals, 2 Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, 2 Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. He was a current member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, serving with HSC 628th DASB and employed as a federal technician for the Pennsylvania Army National Guard at Ft. Indiantown Gap. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Diane A. Crossley and his children, Derek, Jason, Billie, Johnathan and Emily.

Funeral services with full military honors were held on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Indiantown Gap National cemetery, with Chaplain John Trout officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1517 Cedar Cliff Drive, Camp Hill, PA 17011. John R. Shultz Funeral Home, Lykens, was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas L. Blankenhorn
Thomas L. Blankenhorn, 68, of Pine Grove, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at Schoolyard Square, Pine Grove.
Born in Wadesville, August 31, 1953, he was a son of the late Edward and Edith Matthews Blankenhorn. He was a 1953 graduate of Cressona High School.

He was a press operator at the former Alcoa, Cressona. He was a former member of Pine Grove borough council.

He was a member of Suedberg Church of God, former member of Goodwill Hunting Club, Cressona, former PIAA high school baseball umpire and former ASA softball umpire for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Janet M. Behney, who died on February 9, 1996; a brother, Edward; a sister, Louise Blankenhorn.

Surviving are three sons, Keith and Jeffrey, both of Pine Grove, and Gary of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Brenda Clapper of Hollidaysburg; four brothers, Robert, Kenneth and Glenn, all of Cressona, and Wayne of Reedsville; six grandchildren.

Services were held Thursday, Feb. 26, from H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, with the Rev. Roy Luckenbill officiating. Interment was in Church of God cemetery, Pine Grove. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, was in charge of arrangements.

Dean L. Bettinger
Dean L. Bettinger, 74, of Orwin, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Harrisburg Hospital.
Born in Orwin, March 9, 1929, he was a son of the late William and Emma Miller Bettinger.

He was a Navy veteran.

He was a retired heavy equipment mechanic at Fort Indiantown Gap, Annville.

He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Reinerton, Muir Fire Company, Swatara Lodge 267 F&AM; , Tremont, and Orwin Fire Company, where he was past president and fire chief.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Dorothy A. Hand; a son, Randall C. of Orwin; three daughters, Deanna M. Engle of Williamstown, Kathy M. Lang of Bressler, and Nancy L. Matter of Hummelstown; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday, Feb. 28, from the Chapel of Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Tower City, with the Rev. Arthur Sonnenberg officiating. Interment was in St. Peter's cemetery, Orwin. Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Tower City, was in charge of arrangements.

Pauline S. Behney
Pauline S. Behney, 91, of Maple Street, Lebanon, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, in Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon.

Born in Pine Grove, April 15, 1912, she was a daughter of the late George and Bessie Behney Felty.

She had been employed as a factory worker at the former Fox-Knapp Manufacturing, Pine Grove.

She was a member of Jacob's Lutheran Church, Pine Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton E., on July 29, 1990; two brothers, Leroy and Slater Felty; a sister, Helen Douglas.

Surviving are a daughter, Philma Blessing of Fredericksburg; a son, Thomas Behney of Mississippi; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside memorial services and interment were held Sunday, Feb. 15, at Jacob's cemetery, Pine Grove, with the Rev. Debra Ernst officiating. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, was in charge of arrangements.

Helen E. Boyer
Helen E. Boyer, 90, of Ravine, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at ECC Retirement Home, Myerstown.

Born in Ravine, June 22, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Mary E. Leininger Brown.

She was employed in the garment industry for 38 years, having worked for the former Fox-Knapp Manufacturing and the former Pine Valley Manufacturing, both in Pine Grove.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Ravine, its Ladies Aid Society, Ravine Fire Company Auxiliary, where she was awarded a plaque for outstanding service, and was formerly active in Boy Scouts.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Harry A. "Gleppy, " who died January 4, 2000; a son, Glenn, on October 6, 1992; three sisters, Myrtle Troutman, Betty Brown and Beatrice Morgan; a brother, Robert Brown.
Surviving are a daughter, Betty Wilhelm of Ravine; a son, Walter of Pine Grove; two sisters, Lillian Boyer of Ravine, and Elsie Fritz of Lebanon; a brother, Frank Brown of Molleystown; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; a step-great-great-grandchild.

Services were held Friday, Feb. 20, from H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, with the Rev. James Leitzel and the Rev. Mary Lou Eckels officiating. Interment was in St. Paul's Reformed cemetery, Ravine. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, was in charge of arrangements.

Eva K. Brehm
Eva K. Brehm, 102, of Elizabethville, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at the Kepler Home.

Born in Lancaster County on May 18, 1901 she was a daughter of the late William and Alice Bletcher Aston.

She was a volunteer for the Bethany Village in Mechanicsburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse E. Brehm.

Surviving are a niece, Joann Lewis of Boiling Springs; and friends, Susan Etzweiler of Elizabethville and Rory and Yvonne Breinich of Elizabethville.

Services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Elizabethville. Interment was in Mt. Holly Springs cemetery, Mt. Holly Springs.

Memorial donations may be sent to Medic 6, 466 W. Main Street, Elizabethville, PA 17023. Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Elizabethville, was in charge of arrangements.

Vivian R. Cable
Vivian R. Cable, 83, of MIllersburg, died Thursday Feb. 19, 2004, in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.

Born February 13, 1921, she was the wife of the late Charles H. Cable.

A graduate of Elizabethtown College, she received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Education. She was a teacher in Millersburg Area School District and retired in 1983. She was a life time member of Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. She was also a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Millersburg.

Surviving are a sister, Goldie R. Jury of Millersburg; three daughters, Danette L. McCurdy of Hagerstown, MD, Diedre A. Morreale of Keedysville, MD, and Rae Elise Williard of Millersburg; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Trinity United Church of Christ, Monday, Feb. 23, with the Rev. Penny Dollar officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery, Millersburg.

Memorial donations may be made to the Vivian R. Cable Christmas Lighting Memorial Fund in care of Mid Penn Bank, 349 Union Street, Millersburg. Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Millersburg, was in charge of arrangements.
