Marvin C. Bender
Marvin C. Bender, 78, of Lykens, died Sunday, August 23, 2003, at Harrisburg Hospital.

He was a retired coal miner.

He was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, the Alice G. McNoldy Bender; three sons, Charles L. of Carlisle, Bryon K. of Williamstown, and David C. of Lykens; two sisters, Rhea Ledebohm of New Cumberland, and Katheryn Sullivan of Massachusetts; three brothers, Robert Bender of New York, Wilmer Bender of Ohio, and Donald Smith of California; and six grandchildren.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Tower City, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary M. Bettinger
Mary Margaret Bettinger, 86, of Williamstown, died Thursday, August 21, 2003, at Schuylkill Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Pottsville.

Born in Minersville, August 31, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Rose Kavanaugh McNamara.

She was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Williamstown, member of National Council of Catholic Women, Sacred Heart Parish Rosary Sodality and a perpetual life member of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph L. Sr., in August 1991; a son, Joseph Jr., in December 1996; three sisters, Kathryn Tallon, Rosalie Lenker and Patricia Kelley.

Surviving are four daughters, Mary Ellen Pastorkovich of Mechanicsburg, Beth Slagdon of Fairbanks, Alaska, Roseann Walters of Carlisle, and Peg Lucas of Williamstown; three sons, Pat of Williamstown, Thomas of Harrisburg, and Leo of North Pole, Alaska; two brothers, Vincent McNamara of Williamstown, and Thomas McNamara of Exeter; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, August 25, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert Panza officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Williamstown, was in charge of arrangements.

George W. Clemens
George W. Clemens, 84, of Williamstown, died Monday, August 18, 2003, at the Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.
Born in Catawissa on October 19, 1918, he was a son of the late Elmer and Hilda Matter Clemens.

He was a graduate of Girard College in Philadelphia and was an Army Veteran having served during World War II. He was a retired Administrative Assistant from the Department of Military Affairs at Ft. Indiantown Gap.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamstown, where he was a past council president and formerly served as the financial secretary for over 20 years. He was a member of the Williamstown American Legion; Williamstown V.F.W.; Williamstown Senior Citizens, where he formerly served as president; and he was past president of the Williamstown Youth Athletic Association. He was a former little league coach in Williamstown for many years and volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels for over 20 years. He had also been active in the Boy Scouts.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Darrell Moss who died on June 17, 1999.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, June Davis Clemens; a son, Ronald G. and of Millersburg; four daughters, Wilma J. Kafora of Arizona, Patricia A. Ciesnolevicz of Wiconisco, Anita J. Cox of Williamstown and Lorna C. Kolva of Williamstown; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 22, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Marleen Griffith-Stull officiating. Interment was in the Fairview cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to his church, East and Vine Streets, Williamstown, 17098. Dimon Funeral Homes, Inc., Williamstown, was in charge of arrangements.

Ada K. Evans
Ada K. Evans, 93, of Camden County Medical Center, Blackwood, N.J., formerly of the Ashland, Lavelle and Mowry areas, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Kennedy Health System, Seawell, N.J.

Born in Helfenstein, November 22, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Sevilla Reinoehl Weikel. She attended the Ashland area schools.
She was a retired factory worker and was last employed as a kitchen worker at the former Ashland State General Hospital.

She was of the Protestant faith and a long-time member of the Ashland Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in May 1956; a son, Arthur, in 1939; a sister, Anna Bocchicchio; two brothers, Elwood and Harold Weikel.

Surviving are a daughter, Arlene Swartz of Deptford, N.J.; two sisters, Jennie LaMonica of Wernersville, and Dezna Heffner of Locustdale; five brothers, John Weikel of West Berlin, N.J., Samuel Weikel of Reading, and Daniel, Lester and Edward Weikel, all of Ashland; three granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday, August 9, from Kull-Heizenroth Funeral Home, Ashland, with Wesley Dilks officiating. Interment was in Citizens cemetery, Lavelle. Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, RR1 Klingerstown, was in charge of arrangements.

Jennie M. Feagley
Jennie M. Feagley, 83, of Duncannon, formerly of Berrysburg Retirement Home and Paxton, died Friday, August 22, 2003, at Holy Spirit Hospital.
Born August 19, 1920 in Lower Mahanoy, she was a daughter of the late Franklin G. and Ida M. Zeiders Shipman.

She was employed at Muskin Shoe in Millersburg, as an examiner, retiring in 1980; and was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church, Millersburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry A. Feagley, who died on January 13, 1976.

Surviving are a son, Gerald H. Feagley of Berrysburg; two daughters, Dharlys E. Brady of Harrisburg and Joyce D. Furman of Cherry Hill, NJ; a brother, Charles Shipman of Massachusetts; two sisters, Grace Geist of Northumberland and Lena Dintaman of Egg Harbor Twp., NJ; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Religious services will be held on Wednesday, August 27, at 12 noon, from Reinhard Funeral Home, Millersburg, with Rev. AlisonW. Grove and Rev. Jeffrey Wagner officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Millersburg. Friends may call for a visitation on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 1122 Green Street, Harrisburg, 17105.

John Haldeman Jr.
John Haldeman Jr., 73, of Pine Grove, died Sunday, August 24, 2003, at Pottsville Hospital.

Born in Pine Grove, May 31, 1930, he was a son of the late John and Elizabeth Hommes Haldeman.

He was an Army veteran during the Korean War with the 121st Transportation Trucking Company in Korea. He received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and United Nations Service Medal.

He had been employed as a truck driver for Harold Felty Trucking, Pine Grove.

He was a member of the Paradise Valley Hunting Club.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert in 1976; his step-mother, Dorothy Haldeman.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Betty Schaeffer Haldeman; a son, Joseph of Minersville; four sisters, Mary Reed, Georgia Emerick and Barbara Fritz, all of the Pine Grove area, and Sallie Sommers of Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 28, from H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove. Interment will be in Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph C. Hardy Jr.
Joseph C. Hardy Jr., 72, of Tower City, died Friday, August 22, 2003, at Pottsville Hospital.

Born in Pottsville, October 4, 1930, he was a son of the late Joseph C. Sr. and Mary Gronginis Hardy.

He was a Korean Conflict veteran having served with the 8108th AU in Okinawa and received the Occupational Medal for Japan, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed in maintenance at Fort Indiantown Gap Military Reservation, Annville, and later as a construction worker.

Surviving is a daughter, Joann Schneck of Pine Grove.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, at Indiantown Gap National cemetery, Annville. There will not be any calling times. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth M. Kimmel
Elizabeth "Liz" M. Kimmel, 76, of Williamstown, died recently at home.

Born in Williamstown, October 29, 1926, she was a daughter of the late William L. and Hattie Williard Hoffman. She was a graduate of the former Williamstown High School and Thompson Business Institute, Harrisburg.

She retired as a secretary from the treasury department of AMP Inc., Harrisburg, after 24 years of service.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamstown.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Willard R. Hoffman.

Surviving are a son, John W. Conroy of Riverton, Utah; a sister, Catherine M. Rautzhan of Laureldale; a brother, John G. Hoffman of Mount Holly Springs; and a longtime friend, James C. Buck of Hershey.

Private memorial services were held at the convenience of the family from John R. Shultz Funeral Home, Lykens.

Isabel S. Miller
Isabel S. Miller, 79, of Millersburg, died Thursday, August 21, 2003, at the Susquehanna Lutheran Village, Millersburg.
Born November 12, 1923 in Wiconisco, he was a son of the late Jerome and Anne Schadle Matter.

She graduated from the former Wiconisco High School. She was retired from Puritan Fashions, Millersburg, as a Factory Worker for several years. She was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church, Millersburg and a member of Glen Chapter No. 325, Order of the Eastern Star, Lykens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert C. Miller, who died on December 1, 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Durward Miller of Halifax, Lance V. Miller of Trevorton; and five grandchildren.

Private services were held at the convenience of the family, at Reinhard Funeral Home, with Rev. Alison W. Grove officiating. Interment was at Riverview Memorial Gardens, Halifax.

Memorial donations may be made to Susquehanna Lutheran Village, Home Team, 990 Medical Road, Millersburg, 17061. Reinhard Funeral Home, was in charge of arrangements.

Walter C. Morgan
Walter Clayton Morgan, 89, of Hegins, died Saturday, August 23, 2003, at Pottsville Hospital.

Born in Barry Twp., December 13, 1913, he was a son of the late Joseph and Charlotte Houser Morgan.

He was a retired self-employed farmer. For 13 years during the 1940's to 1960's he served as an agent for the Pennsylvania Dairy Cooperative.
He served as a troop leader for the Boy Scouts in the 1930's.

He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Weishample, where he served as superintendent of Sunday schools for 19 years, a lay leader for 40 years, a steward for 43 years, a trustee for 47 years, and a Sunday school teacher for 52 years. He also served as an usher, and on the picnic committee. He accumulated more than 50 years of perfect attendance in Sunday school.

He served on the Tri-Valley School Board for 38 years where he was a former president and earned the distinction of being the second-longest school board member in Pennsylvania's history. He was a key figure in the establishment of the former Barry Township Elementary School, both of the county's vocational-technical schools, and the county's school for special education students.

He earned a commendation from Governor Tom Ridge for his induction into the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame for having voted consecutively at every November election for the past 50 years.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lloyd, Ario, and Irvin Morgan; five sisters, Florence Morgan, Loretta Miller, Erma Ludwig Maurer, Arlene Schwalm, and Altheda Hacker.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Blanche A. Green Morgan; a son, Harold Morgan of Salzburg, Australia; a daughter, Elaine Cave of Barry Township; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 27, at the Salem United Methodist Church, Weishample, with the Rev. John Wallace officiating. Interment will be at Salem United Methodist Church cemetery, Weishample. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, Deep Creek Road, Ashland, 17921. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View is handling arrangements.

Mae M. Schreffler
Mae M. Schreffler, 84, of Susquehanna Lutheran Village, Millersburg, died Monday, August 18, 2003, at Harrisburg Hospital.
Born in Erdman, she was a daughter of the late George and Annie Martz Kessler.

She was a member of the Millersburg Senior Center.

She was preceded in death y her husband, Ray E. Schreffler.

Surviving are a son, Ray E. of Millersburg; two brothers, William Kessler of Millersburg and Robert Kessler of Spring Glen; a sister, Eleanor Latsha of Millersburg; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Friday, August 22, at the Hoover Funeral Home, Inc., Elizabethville. Interment was in Zion Lutheran cemetery, Erdman. Hoover Funeral Home, Inc., Elizabethville, was in charge of arrangements.
