Gladys Weller, 73, Denver, was Harting’s Bakery worker

Gladys H. Weller, 73, of Denver, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mt. Joy.

Born in West Reading, a daughter of the late Edith (Fenstermacher) Lash and Elmer E. McCoy, she was the husband of Harlan Weller, who died December 2007.

She last worked at the Harting’s Bakery Outlet Store, Bowmansville, and worked many years for Griffith & Bixler, Knauers.

Surviving are a daughter: Shelly J., wife of Paul E., Hassler Jr., of Denver; grandchildren: Tom and Daniel; step-children: Shelie Ann Cake, of Reading; and Kelie Weller and Leselie Holder, both Florida; five step-grandchildren; two step-great-granddaughters; a sister: Dorothy McCarty, of Reading; and brother: Ronald McCoy, of Exeter.

Gladys was predeceased by sisters: June Randazzo and Lillian Steinmetz.

Funeral services were held on May 15 from Good Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, Reamstown, with Chaplain Glenn A. Beard Jr. officiating. Graveside services were held at Berks County Memorial Gardens, Fleetwood.

Emma Weik, 80, enjoyed cooking, was Red Wings fan

Emma M. Weik, 80, of Denver, went to be with her Lord Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Denver Nursing Home.

She was born in Mohnton to the late Antonio and Sally (Strunk) Nocera and was the wife of the late Jay M. Weik, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.

Emma was a member of Weist Memorial United Methodist Church, Schoeneck. She enjoyed going to the mountains, cooking, reading and watching the Detroit Red Wings.

Emma is survived by three sons: David M., husband of Linda L. (Fasnacht) Weik, of Denver; Gary L. Weik, of Kleinfeltersville; and Jeffrey, husband of Amy S. (Townsley) Weik, of Ephrata; two daughters: I. Jayne, wife of Richard L. Merkey Sr., of Stevens; and Holly S., wife of Ronald E. Sweigart, of Denver; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Sarah Marabello, of Shillington, Louise Cataldi, of Denver; and three brothers: John, husband of Sandy Nocera, of Mohnton; Frank, husband of Carol Nocera, of Mohnton; and Tom Nocera, of Reading.

Her funeral service was held on May 16 at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Robert Stippich officiating. Interment followed in the Fairview cemetery.

Elwood Walbert, 92, blacksmith

Elwood C. "Chief" Walbert, 92, of New Holland, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mount Joy.

He was born in Allentown to the late Harrison David and Kathryn (Mumbauer) Walbert and was the husband of Linda L. (Getz) Walbert, with whom he shared 41 years of marriage.

Chief was a member of the Society for Pennsylvania Archeology since 1954. He collected Indian artifacts, lighthouses and stamps. During his working years, he was a blacksmith for Armstrong.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son: Matthew Walbert, of New Holland.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Harrison David Walbert; and three sisters: Mildred Cunningham, Lillian Laubach and Ellen Painter.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Esther Sweigart, 89, homemaker

Esther M. Sweigart, 89, of Stevens, formerly of New Holland, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Denver Nursing Home.

Her husband, Curtis E. Sweigart, died on Feb. 17, 2011. Born in Oregon, she was the daughter of the late Aaron and Susan Roland.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and cooking.

Surviving are four children: Gloria Allgyer, of Kinzers; Curtis E. Jr., husband of Geraldine F. Sweigart Jr., of New Holland; Ann, wife of Larry Englerth, of New Holland; and Larry, husband of Paula Sweigart, of New Holland; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter: Kathy Dienner; a son-in-law: Elmer Allgyer; and 11 siblings: Elsie Brown, John Roland, Paul Roland, Ambrose Roland, Walter Roland, Alvin Roland, Lester Roland, Henry Roland, Caroline Boley, Anna Ressler and Mary Diem.

Her funeral was held on May 14 at Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland, with Rev. Kevin Readman officiating. Interment took place in Ranck’s United Methodist cemetery.

Bernetha Stuber, 95, Ephrata, retired from Science Press

Bernetha M. Stuber, 95, of Ephrata and formerly of Denver, passed away Monday, May 7, 2012 at Ephrata Manor.

Born in Akron, Bernetha was the daughter of the late Joshua and Sadie (Ecenroad) Hiester. Her husband, the late Ralph S. Stuber, passed away in 1976.

Bernetha was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Congregational (EC) Church in Reamstown, where she taught Sunday school. She worked at the former Science Press in Ephrata for 10 years until her retirement in 1977. She enjoyed cooking and was a loving mother and devoted grandmother.

She is survived by a son: Terry L. Stuber, husband of Theresa J. (Nutter) Stuber of Ephrata; five grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and a sister: Virginia Marks of Ephrata.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter: Shirley D. Materazzi; a grandson: Steven Smith; a sister: Arlene Young; and a brother: Howard Hiester.

Funeral services were held on May 12 at St. Paul’s E.C. Church with the Rev. Kirk Marks officiating. Place of interment will be Mt. Zion Evangelical cemetery, Akron.

Lois Sirianni, 86, seamstress, was Denver Meats treasurer

Lois Sirianni, 86, of Ephrata, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Landis Homes.

Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Marie Shimp Fox. Lois was the wife of the late George Sirianni, with whom she celebrated 65 years of marriage.

She was the former treasurer of Denver Meats Inc., a member of Hope United Methodist Church and enjoyed sewing and making crafts.

She is survived by her daughters: Linda, wife of John Forney, of Ephrata; and Patti, wife of Mark Kessler, of Lancaster, four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

A memorial service was held on May 15 at the East Bethany Chapel, Landis Homes, Lititz. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Robert McQuate, 59, Ephrata, long-distance truck driver

Robert G. McQuate, 59, of Ephrata, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012 at his residence.

He was born in Lancaster to Lorraine (Brandt) wife of George Lineaweaver and the late I. Galen McQuate.

Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting and walking. He attended Grace Church, Ephrata. Robert worked as a long distance truck driver

In addition to his mother, Robert is survived by his companion: Marian Jane Murry; and a sister: Sandra, wife of Dwayne Ebersole, of Lancaster.

His funeral service was held on May 15 at the Grace Church, Ephrata, with Pastor Kim Robertson officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Naomi Lehman, 89, Ephrata, missionary, enjoyed singing

Naomi Krady Lehman, 89, of Ephrata, died Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Ephrata Manor Nursing Home of congestive heart failure while sleeping next to her husband of 71 years, Paul.

Naomi was born on November 14, 1922 in Harrisonburg, Va. and was the daughter of Daniel Stoner Krady and Francis Miller Krady of Lancaster.

As a child, Naomi’s life was shaped by living at the Vine Street Mennonite Mission, where her father was the superintendent and she often recalled assisting in the distribution of clothing to needy families and helping serve food to the homeless. Naomi and Paul spent many happy years creating and singing music while engaged in mission work in Italy, Germany and Switzerland. To her family and extensive friends, Naomi was known as a loving, gentle and caring person who treated others with kindness, consideration and compassion. She enjoyed reading, singing, sewing and gardening and was a member of Pilgrims Mennonite Church of Akron.

Shirley Hirneisen, 75, Denver, loved gardening, NASCAR

Shirley M. Hirneisen, 75, of Denver, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at her home, surrounded by family and friends.

Born on January 12, 1937 in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Lester Bauder and Margaret (Sweitzer) Bauder who resides in Ephrata. Shirley was married to the late Kenneth D. Hirneisen.

Besides being a loving mother and grandmother, she loved her gardening and beautiful flowers. She also watched NASCAR racing and was a big fan of WWE Wrestling. She will be deeply missed.

Shirley is survived by her mother: Margaret Bauder; a sister: Linda, wife of John Bartsch, of Bethel; and six children: Debra A., wife of Carol E. Sensenig, of Denver; Gerald E., husband of Debra Bollinger, of Florida; Jeffrey L., husband of Cindy Bollinger, of Reinholds; Kenneth L. Bollinger, partner of Lucy Walmer, of Ephrata; John F., husband of Donna Hirneisen, of Adamstown; and Melissa M. Hirneisen, partner of Chris McBride, of Ephrata; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, husband and a grandchild.

Laura Zerbe, 87, bank employee

Laura Zerbe, 87, Claymont, Del., formerly of Reading; New Castle, Del.; and Naples, Fla., died Tuesday, June 12, 2012 in Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Francis Hospital, Wilmington, Del.

Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Clyde L. and Vera M. (Fischer) James. Her husband, Alvin R. Zerbe, died Jan. 23, 1993.

A Reading High School graduate, she worked at several banks.

Surviving are daughters: Eileen D. Zerbe, of Claymont, Del.; and Nancy L. Zerbe, wife of Peter Materna, of Metuchen, N.J.; a son: and Robert C., husband of Barbara Zerbe, of New Castle, Del.; seven grandchildren; and sisters: Alberta Schock, of Naples, Fla.; and Ann Konnick, of Reading.

A sister: Vera Eckelman, predeceased her.

Funeral services were held on June 16 from Good Funeral Home, Reamstown, with Pastor Tim Garman officiating. Burial took place in Muddy Creek Cemtery, Swartzville. Contributions to Alzheimer’s Association, Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.

Gerald White, WWII vet, Pepperidge Farms worker

Gerald R. White, 90, of Bowmansville, died Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born in Saxons River, Vt., he was the son of the late Eugene F. and Lois (Parker) White. He was married 68 years on Feb. 19 to Glendine H. (White) White.

Gerald worked in maintenance at Pepperidge Farms and later washed dishes at Clair’s Family Restaurant in Morgantown until age 80.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and is a member of the American Legion Colonel Jacob Morgan Post 537 in Morgantown.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Lawrence E., married to Judy White, of Winchester, N.H.; Francis G. White, of Birdsboro; and Eugene B., husband of Sondra White, of Denver; two daughters: Monica L. Pike and Holly H. Miller, both of Bowmansville; 12 grandchildren; 16 great- grandchildren; one great-great grandson; a brother: Warren White, of Peterborough, N.H.; and a sister: Esther Lent, of Keene, N.H.

A memorial service was held on June 16 at The Bridge, Shillington, with the Rev. Johnny Hughes officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603.
