Douglas E. Getz, 59, Waste Management employee

Douglas E. Getz, 59, of New Holland, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at his residence.

Born in Ephrata, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Shirley Ann Gibson Getz.

He was a graduate of Milton Hershey School.

Douglas was employed for 38 years with Waste Management Company in Lancaster. He previously worked at Alsam Shoe Factory in Lititz.

Among his interests were watching the Philadelphia Eagles, working on cars, going to drag races, playing softball, being in the outdoors, cookouts and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving is a sister: Beverly Getz, of Lititz, close friend Kathy Getz and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Preceding Douglas in death were sisters: Roberta Jackson and Eugenia Getz and a brother: William L. Getz.

Dorothy Foltz, formerly of Ephrata, seamstress

Dorothy Evans Foltz, 88, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at Lancaster General Hospital.

She was born in Warwick Township to the late Monroe and Sallie Evans and was the wife of the late Roland W. Foltz.

Dorothy attended Carpenter Community Church, Talmage. During her working years, she worked as a seamstress at various factories in the area. She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. She enjoyed reading and crocheting.

She is survived by a son: Arnold G., husband of Duang Foltz of Mary Esther, Fla. and a grandson, Ronald W. Foltz III of Harrisburg.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Roland W. Foltz Jr.

A funeral service was held Nov. 23 at Stradling Funeral Home, Akron, with Rev. Glen Hoover officiating. Interment took place in the Zion Lutheran Church cemetery, Akron.

Deaths of local interest

Michael P. Farbo, 84, of Lancaster, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013 at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy. His son, James P. Farbo, husband of Patty, lives in Ephrata.

Jeanette Mae Frymyer, 85, of Lititz, died peacefully at the United Zion Retirement Community Friday, Nov. 22, 2013. Jeanette was self employed with a cleaning business and formerly worked for Dutch Maid in Ephrata as an inspector. Local survivors include Jeanette’s sons: Larry L. Frymyer, Lititz, and Jeffrey L., husband of Donna L. Frymyer, Ephrata and two sisters: Barbara Byers, Lancaster, and Joyce, wife of Donald LaVigne, Lititz.

Rebecca S. Huyett, 93, of Narvon, formerly of Mohnton, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 at Zerbe Sisters Nursing Centre. Born in Brecknock Twp., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Rebecca (Styer) Fox. Her husband, Lloyd Huyett, died in 1990. Her daughter, Betty Jane, widow of Ronald E. Johnson, lives in Stevens.

Anna Ruth (Zeiset) Rohrer, 87, of East Berlin, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at Hanover Hospital. Ruth was born July 14, 1926 in Brownstown, the daughter of the late George M. and Anna Mary (Stauffer) Zeiset. Her brother, Paul Zeiset, lives in Ephrata.

Roberta Smaltz, 46, EARS supervisor, active with Denver Boro rec council

Roberta Lynn Smaltz, 46, of Denver, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was born in Ephrata, daughter to the late Galen Hibshman and Robert and Sylvia (Hartloft) Showalter.

She was a member of Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ in Ephrata.

Roberta was a 1985 graduate of Ephrata High School. She worked as a production supervisor for E.A.R.S. until 2011. Recently she was a sales representative for Avon and earlier ran a personal ceramic business. Roberta was active with the Recreation Council through Denver Borough. She was an avid reader and enjoyed making crafts. Very important to her, was her advocacy for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Roberta is survived by her husband of 17 years, Jay Allen Smaltz; a son: Joshua Allen Smaltz and a daughter: Abigail Rae Smaltz, both at home; seven brothers: Scott Showalter of Ephrata, Galen Hibshman of Lancaster, Rick Hibshman of Carlisle, Mark Hibshman of Greensburg, Travis Hibshman of Ephrata, David Hibshman of Coatesville and Lynn Hibshman of Ephrata and two sisters: Wendy Kwalik of West Virginia and Crystal Farling of Strasburg.

A funeral service was held Nov. 16 at the Zion’s Reformed UCC Church, Ephrata, with Rev. John Miller officiating. Interment took place in the Lincoln cemetery.

Richard E. Queeney

Richard E. Queeney, 80, of Ephrata, PA, formerly of Bay Shore, NY, died at home on Thursday, August 23, 2007. He was born in Boston, MA to the late Donald H. and Elisabeth B. (Ellett) Queeney and was the husband of Joan M. Queeney.

Richard was a World War II Veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman First Class. He worshipped in the Episcopal Faith and was a retired butcher having worked for various super market chains in New York. Richard was a member of Post 94 American Legion, Babalon, NY and Cloister Post 429 American Legion, Ephrata, PA.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Douglas A. Queeney of Nebraska, a daughter, Dale E. Queeney of NY and a son, Kevin R. Queeney of NJ and 4 grandchildren.

Friend may call at Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata from 7-9 pm on Monday, August 27, 2007 and from 9-10 am on Tuesday, August 28, 2007. Funeral services will begin at 10 am on Tuesday at Gravenor's with the Reverend Glenn Beard, Jr. officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be directed to Hospice of Lancaster County, 685 Good Dr., Lancaster, PA 17604.

Walter G. Wigley

Walter G. Wigley, 92, of Ephrata, PA, formerly of Queens Village, NY, died on Thursday, August 23, 2007 after a brief illness. Walter was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late George H. and Anna (Gregory) Wigley. He was married to Ruth E. (Fuller Mace) Wigley for fifty years last November.

Walter was Veteran of World War II, serving as a Staff Sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Force. He served in Europe and earned two Bronze Battle Stars. While a resident of New York, Walter was a member of the 106th Air Rescue Wing-New York National Guard, the Hollis-Queens Ambulance Corps and was a Boy Scout Leader.

In 1974, Walter and his family moved to Ephrata. He was employed as a Building Administrator at F. W. Woolworth Company before retiring in 1980. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ephrata. Walter also belonged to the Golden Years Club, Ephrata Area Historical Preservation Trust: he was instrumental in securing the caboose car currently on display at the Ephrata Railroad Station and the Ephrata Lions Club: where he was Assistant Secretary for many years.

In addition to his wife, Ruth, he is survived by children: Elizabeth A. Gephart, June E. Armstrong, wife of Ronald, Raymond E. Mace, husband of Jennie, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA from 7-9 pm on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 and from 8:30-9:30 am on Wednesday, August 29, 2007. Funeral services will begin at 9:30 am on Wednesday at Gravenors. Interment with Full Military Honors will be at Indiantown Gap National cemetery, East Hanover Twp., Lebanon Co., PA. Beverley J. Badorf

Beverley Joan Badorf, 69, of Ephrata, PA entered into her eternal rest at the Casey House of the Montgomery County Hospice of Maryland on Saturday, September 8, 2007 after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Montreal, Quebec on January 18, 1938 to the late James and Dorothy (Livick) Osler. Beverley was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She was the wife of the late Rodney K. Badorf. She is survived by four sisters, four brothers, three children, and eight grandchildren, and friends too numerous to count.

After completing the 8th grade, Beverley began working full time as a page girl for the Royal Bank of Canada at the tender age of 14. Over the next 8 years of her life she served in various capacities and in various branches of the Royal Bank of Canada. After getting married , Beverley stayed at home and raised her children until moving to Ephrata in 1975, when Beverley began working at the Fleet Air Shoe Factory Outlet store. After several years in the shoe store, Fleet Air employed her in accounts payable and receiving until the company closed in 1985. Then she began working for the Ephrata Area School District Office serving in accounts payable and receiving until her retirement in 2000 AD.

Beverley earned her G.E.D in 1986 and became a U.S. Citizen in 1991. She regularly attended church, and she loved the gospel music of Bill & Gloria Gaither, Ernie Haas and several other similar musicians. She was a former Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 73, Ephrata, and a former volunteer at the Ephrata Community Hospital. She also regularly attended the Ephrata Christian Womens Club, 60 plus and Golden Years. She loved to knit, bake, read, travel especially on cruises and see shows.

Beverley is survived by a daughter, Pamela J., wife of Keith W. Rutter of Silver Spring, MD, two sons, Steven K., husband of Elizabeth (Lake), of Baltimore, MD, and Wayne S., husband of Audrey (Armstrong) of Concord, CA, and eight grandchildren, Jordan, Erin, Benjamin, Matthew, Colin, Jonathan, Will, and Karley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rodney, her late fianc Earl Witmer, and her granddaughter, Abigail Badorf.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 13, 2007 at the Akron United Zion Church, 31 South Tenth Street, Akron. Interment will follow at the Cedar Hill cemetery, Ephrata, Lancaster County. A viewing will be held Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and also one hour prior to services at the Akron United Zion Church. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral or viewing.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Beverley's memory be sent to the Montgomery Hospice at www.montgomeryhospice.org or Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research www.ibcresearch.org .

Christian Lee Zinn

Christian Lee Zinn, 78, of Ephrata, PA, passed away at home on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Cambridge, PA to the late Christian G. and Margaret (Ford) Zinn and was married to Pearl (Gockley) Zinn. His first wife, Kathryn C. (Hutchinson) Zinn passed away in 2004.

Lee graduated from Coatsville High School in 1947. He was a member of the football team and participated in track at the Penn Relays. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1947-50 and in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1950-53. From 1950 to 1996, Lee owned and operated the former Zinns Diner and Park in Denver, PA.

Lee was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ephrata. He was also a sports car enthusiast. Lee sponsored many athletic teams through the years and in 1973 the Zinns Diner softball team won a League Championship.

Lee held memberships at the Lancaster Recreation and Park Association, AMVETS Post 136 in Ephrata, Ephrata and Adamstown VFWs, American Legion of Ephrata, Ephrata Elks, Ephrata Blue Lodge #665 Free and Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite Lodge Bodies of the Valley of Lancaster, Lancaster County Shrine, Rajah Shrine of Reading and the Council Chapter Consistory of the Valley of Reading.

Lee served on the Ephrata Hospital Board and from 1965-1980 on the Ephrata Recreation Center Board (president from 1970-72). He also volunteered his time as a lifeguard at the YMCA, a Counselor at Chesapeake Boy Scout Camp, a bingo caller at Maple Farm Nursing Home and a deliverer for Meals on Wheels.

For all of Lees work and volunteerism he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Cocalico Jaycees, the Lay Honor Award from the Recreation and Park Society for contributing to the Pa. Recreation and Park Society, 15 Year Award from the Ephrata Rec. Center, VFW Award for Contribution to Furtherance of Sports and Recreation in 1977 and an award in Appreciation and Recognition of Athletic and Recreation Programs of Eastern Lancaster County by the East Cocalico Lions Club in 1976.

In addition to his wife Pearl, Lee is survived by two daughters, Kitty L., wife of Thomas Dickersheid of Ephrata and Vicky L., wife of Bruce Rettew of Ephrata, a son, Chris Zinn, a step daughter, Susan, wife of Christopher DiGiacomo of Lancaster, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a sister, Anna Zinn of Narvon, PA. Lee was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Parker.

Friends may call at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., in Ephrata from 11 am to 2 pm on Friday, September 14, 2007. Funeral services will begin at 2 pm at the church with the Reverend Henry E. Herbener officiating. Interment will be private in Lincoln cemetery, Ephrata-Lincoln, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Ephrata at the above address.

Alice L. Bowman

Alice Bowman, 91, formerly of Reinholds, entered into rest on Sunday, September 16 at the Denver Nursing Home.

She was born June 14, 1916, in Clay Township, a daughter of the late Harry R. and Ella G. Landis Miller. She was the wife of the late Lloyd K. Bowman who passed away August 1, 1997.

Surviving are two daughters: Shirley (Roger) Sweigart, Stevens; and Darlene (Jacob) Adams, Leesport; a son, Clyde (Brenda Weber), Temple; grandchildren: Lori (Alvin) Oberholtzer, Tracy (Jeff) Schmeck, Sherri (Mike) Hershberger, Renee (Steve) Adams-Moser, Michelle (Mark) Hostetter, Susan (Paul) Bushold, and Thomas; great-grandchildren: Danica, Alyssa Schmeck; Alexa, Faith, Aaron Hershberger; Danielle, Andrew Oberholtzer; Zachary, Kirstie Unger; and Step great-granddaughters: Stephanie, Ashley Hostetter. Also a sister Helen (Lester) Lutz; and a brother, Lester Miller, survive. She was preceded in death by half sisters: Mary Lausch, Edna and Gertie Miller, and Mary Ream and half brother Elam Miller.

Reba Richwine

Reba Richwine, 89, of Brethren Village, formerly of New Holland and Lebanon, passed away at Ephrata Community Hospital on Friday, September 21, 2007 after a short illness.

Born in Salisbury Township, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Amanda (Landis) Hershey.

Reba was a member of Trinity E. C. Church in New Holland. She worked for the former Victor Weaver Poultry Company. For twenty years she lived in Lebanon where she worked in the food service division of Philhaven Hospital. Mrs. Richwine retired and moved to Brethren Village in 2002.

Surviving are two sons: Lee A. Richwine, husband of Joan L. (Snader) Richwine of Locust Grove, VA and Herbert R. Richwine, husband of Alice M. (Eshleman) Richwine, of Stevens. Four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and eight brothers and sisters also survive.

Friends may call at the Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 from 7-9 pm and again at Brethren Village, 3001 Lititz Pike, on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 from 9-10am. Funeral services will begin at 10 am with the Rev. Calvin T. Reed officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn cemetery.

George E. Weidler

George E. Weidler, 92, a lifetime resident of Ephrata, PA, died on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at Conestoga View in Lancaster, PA after a short illness. He was born in Rothsville, PA to the late Monroe and Alice (Ernst) Weidler and was married to Antoinette (Rinella) Weidler for 67 years.

George was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ephrata and was a retired foundry worker.

In addition to his wife, George is survived by two daughters: Sheila, wife of Robert W. Criss of New Holland, PA and Paulette, wife of Steve Smeltzer of Missouri, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three brothers: Roy, husband of Esther Weidler of Ephrata, Richard, husband of Barbara Weidler of Ephrata and Russell husband of Betty Weidler of Lititz, PA.

Friends may call at Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata from 7-9 pm on Mon., October 1, 2007. A Christian Prayer Service will be held at 8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tues., October 2 at O.M.P.H. Church, 320 Church Ave., Ephrata, PA. Final Commendation and Farewell will be in Cedar Hill cemetery, Ephrata.

Katherine M. Jobes

Katherine M. Jobes, 84, of Ephrata, PA, formerly of Plains and West Hempfield Twp., PA, died on Friday, September 28, 2007 at Ephrata Community Hospital. She was born in Elmira, NY a daughter of the late Lester and Edith (Tomczak) Tome and step-father Peter Slabinski. She was married for 62 years to the late Earl G. Jobes who passed away on Sept., 2, 2006.

Katherine graduated from Plains High School and Wilkes-Barre Business College. During World War II she entered the U.S. Navy (WAVES) and received her training at Hunter College in Bronx, NY and also at Oklahoma A&M; College (now Oklahoma State University), Stillwater, OK. She was assigned to the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps in Washington D.C., where she and two other Navy personnel performed secretarial duties on a joint Army-Navy project on the development of protective body armor.

She was a resident of Ephrata since 1952 and was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ephrata. She was the O.M.P.H. school secretary for 13 years, retiring in 1987.

Katherine is survived by four sons: William, husband of Nancy (VanMeter) Jobes of Newtown, PA, Mark E., husband of Karen (Charles) Jobes of Ephrata, Michael Jobes of Florida, and Richard P., husband of Mei (Hng) Jobes of Wrightsville, PA. Six grandchildren also survive, including Valarie, Mark P., Michelle, Jason, Christopher and Kaitlin. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Rayna, Nolan, Hayley, Pamela, Katherine, Emily and Jackson; a brother, William, husband of Lee (Grillini) Tome of Plains, PA and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata from 6-8 pm on Tues., October 2, 2007. A Christian Prayer Service will be held at 8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wed., October 3 at O.M.P.H. Church, 320 Church Ave., Ephrata, PA. Final Commendation and Farewell will be in Cedar Hill cemetery, Ephrata.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Ephrata Area Social Services, 227 N. State St., Ephrata, PA 17522.
