He was born Anthony SPACONICH on March 12, 1916 in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, changing his surname to Harrison at age 20. His father, Wassil, died as a result of injuries from a coal mining accident when Tony was five, which had a profound effect on him. Tony received a B.A. from Columbia University and a master's degree from Yeshiva University. He always encouraged his children and grandchildren to excel in school, because, "education is something no one can ever take away from you." Tony served in the US Air Force, achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and piloted cargo planes around the globe during both World War II and the Vietnam War. Throughout his life, he played the clarinet, flute and saxophone, for the pure joy it gave him and others. When not reading, learning or practicing his instruments, Tony was often playing tennis. He was especially proud of the musical and athletic achievements of his children and grandchildren. Tony was predeceased by his parents, Wassil and Anna (PETRICK) Spaconich.
