William Hayden

William Hayden, of 24th and Alter streets, Hazleton, died Tuesday evening at the emergency room of the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance, Church Street Campus after a long illness.

Born in Sybertsville, he was the son of the late Joseph and Rose (Marchetti) Hayden, and was a lifetime resident of the area.

Prior to retiring, he was a tractor trailer operator for various trucking firms and also was employed at Bethlehem Steel.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were brothers, John and Paul Hayden.

Surviving are one son and one daughter; brothers and sisters, Joseph Hayden, Hazleton; Jean Reteneller, Sybertsville, and Lawrence Hayden, Pittman, N.J.; and one grandchild.

A private funeral service will be held at the family’s convenience.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph B. Conahan Funeral Home Inc., 532 N. Vine St., Hazleton.

Margaret ‘Eby’ Hartz

Margaret “Eby” Hartz, East Main Street, Weatherly, a guest at Carbon Crest, Hudsondale, died Wednesday evening at the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance’s Church Street Campus.

She was the widow of the late Calvin G. Hartz.

Arrangements will be announced by the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, Weatherly.

Margaret Simasek

Margaret Simasek, 93, 310 E. Grant St., McAdoo, died Thursday afternoon at the Hometown Nursing Home, where she had been a guest.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, McAdoo, and is survived by her husband, Anthony Simasek; daughters, Margaret Fudge, Dorothy Rubasky and Jean Kohler; and a son, Ronald Simasek.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Damiano Funeral Home, McAdoo.

George A. Perhonitch Jr.

George A. Perhonitch Jr., 53, 435 E. Chestnut St., Hazleton, formerly of Quakake, died suddenly Thursday at the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance’s Broad Street Campus.

The son of George A. Perhonitch Sr. and Verna (Sube) Perhonitch, Quakake, he had been employed at Hershey Chocolate.

He is survived, in addition to his parents, by his wife, the former Barbara Gueiss; several stepchildren; one brother and one sister.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Damiano Funeral Home, McAdoo.

Charles S. Schadder

Charles S. Schadder, 87, died Thursday afternoon at the Mountain City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Hazleton, were he had been a guest.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Frank J. Bonin Funeral Home Inc., and will be announced at a later time.

Josephine Arruzzo

Josephine Arruzzo, of 1493 North Church St., Hazleton, died Tuesday morning at her residence. Born in Pardeesville, she was the daughter of the late John and Rose (Gorga) DeFluri.

Mrs. Arruzzo resided in the area all of her life and was a member of St. Nazarius Roman Catholic Church, Pardeesville.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents were brothers, Joseph, Ned, John Jr. and Neal DeFluri; and a sister, Frances Sweeney.

Surviving are her husband, Rex; sisters, Madeline Consoli, Landsdale, and Antionette DeFluri, Hazleton; brothers, Nicholas, Lehighton, George, Mauro, and Dominic DeFluri, all of Hazleton.

Many neices and nephews also survive.

Private funeral services were held Thursday morning from the Fierro Funeral Home, Inc., 26 West Second St., Hazleton.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Nazarius R.C. Church.

Interment followed in Calvary cemetery, Drums.

Pallbearers were, Mauro DeFluri, Doug Krissinger, Joesph DeLash, Rocco Mussoline, Louis and Vince Consoli, and honorary pallbearer, Nicholas DeFluri.

Herman T. Craigle

Herman T. Craigle, 72, of Levittown, died Thursday at the Lower Bucks Hospital.

He was born in Hazleton and lived in Levittown for 48 years.

Before retiring, Mr. Craigle worked for the Trenton Times for 28 years.

He is an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Margaret; children Barbara, Michael, Herman, Douglas, and Curtis; a brother, Cletus; a sister, Joanne Magula; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the James O. Bradley Funeral Home Inc., 260 Bellevue Ave., Pendell, Pa.

Burial will be in Rosedale Memorial Park.

Friends may call Saturday at the funeral home from 9:30 to time of service.

Claire H. Martini

Claire H. Martini, 97, a resident of Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre died Wednesday.

Born February 20, 1905 in White Haven, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Auer) Martini and a member of St. Ignatius Church, Kingston and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church.

Ms. Martini was past president of the Ladies of Charity and Valley Chest Auxiliary and was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University, and Newark State College, Newark, N.J.

She taught in several one-room school houses in the White Haven area and also taught in East Side Borough for a number of years.

Prior to retirement she was employed as a teacher in Succasunna, N.J.

A veteran of the Woman’s Army Corps, she served in World War II.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents were brothers, Victor, Joseph, John, James, Edward, Frank and Albert Martini; sisters, Barbara Lavis, Mary Deal, Kathryn Albertine and Anne Loftus.

Surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, White Haven. The Rev. Gerard Safko of Good Shepherd Church, Drums will officiate.

Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s cemetery, White Haven.

Friends may call at the church Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of mass.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph E. Lehman Funeral Home, Inc., White Haven.

Sally Lou Atkinson

Sally Lou (Newell) Atkinson, 72, of Tarpon Springs, Fla. died Sept. 26.

Born and raised in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late Ruth and William L. Newell.

Mrs. Atkinson attended Hazleton area schools and was a 1947 graduate of Hazleton High School.

Preceding her in death, in additon to her parents, were sisters, Betty Jane Evans, Mary Alice Vowler, and a brother, John.

Surviving are her husband, Don; daughter, Donna; brother, William; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held in Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Dolores Connelly

Dolores Connelly, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, died Sept. 10.

She was born September 27, 1923

Surviving are sons, John, Richard, Owen, and Robert; daughters, Dolores, Norine (a Theology teacher at Bishop Hafey Junior/Senior High School), Kathleen, Deirdre, and Bridget; and 12 grandchildren.

A Memorial Liturgy will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Church on Poplar Street, Hazleton at 7 p.m. on Monday. All members of the
Bishop Hafey community are invited to attend.

Audrey Knyrim Mattern

Audrey Knyrim Mattern, 82, of Jacksonville, N.C., formerly of Hazleton, died Sept. 26 at Onslow Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville, N.C.

Mrs. Mattern was a graduate of the Hazleton High School Class of 1937.

She joined the Marine Corps during World War II and was a lifetime member of the Women’s Marine Association.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Christian and Hilda (Ehmer) Knyrim; her husband, Jay Richard Mattern; a sister, Evelyn K. Kegel and a brother, Frederick Knyrim.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Hiram (Pamela C.) Bell, Jacksonville; sons, J. Richard Mattern II, Clearfield; Charles C. Mattern, Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Emerson Knyrim, Montoursville; sisters, Grace Foti, Danville; Hilda Smith, Wapwallopen, and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Christ Evangelical Church, Conyngham. The Rev. William Fairchild will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home of Jacksonville, N.C. and the Mark S. Harman Funeral Home, (East), 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums.

Contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, Penn State University, Highacres, or a charity of one’s choice.
