HELEN VIRGINIA RICE
SOMERSET, Pa. - Helen Virginia Rice, 85, of Somerset, formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Somerset Hospital, Somerset.
She was born on Sept. 4, 1912, in Black Township, a daughter of the late Edward E. Humbert and Agnes Emma (Rohrbaugh) Humbert.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Dora (Miller) Humbert; husband, James Robert Rice Jr., who died in 1981; an infant son; brothers, Virgil, Glenn, Robert and Gene Humbert; and a sister, Catherine H. Walter.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Leona) Long, Johnstown; half-sisters, Mrs. Frances "Peggy" Dunmyer, Mrs. James "Red" (Mildred) Ferrell, both of Somerset, Mrs. Zola Clark, Norfolk, Va.; half-brother, James Humbert, Somerset; and step-sister, Mrs. Alice Critchfield, Cleveland, Ohio.

She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church of Cumberland and attended St. Peter's Catholic Church of Somerset. She was a retired Registered Nurse from Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where Rite of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m., Friday, June 12, 1998, with the Monsignor Samuel J. Tomaselli officiating.

Interment will be in the SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church cemetery, Cumberland.

WILLIAM L. SPANIEL
PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. - William Lawrence Spaniel, 63, of Retreat Beach Loop, died Friday, July 31, 1998, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Spaniel was born April 13, 1935, in Sutersville, Pa., the son of the late William John and Catherine Ihli Spaniel.

He retired from Celanese after 37 years in production and planning and customer service in Rock Hill, S.C., Cumberland, Md., Charlotte, N.C., and New York City. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the 3rd Army at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Ga. He was a graduate of Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa.; a past exalted ruler of the Rock Hill Elks Club; and active in community programs in Rock Hill and Cumberland.

Survivors include his wife, Rosalie Swanson Spaniel; two sons, William George Spaniel of Washington, D.C., and Paul Maurice Spaniel of Charlotte.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at the Harry and Bryant Funeral Home in Charlotte.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Society of St. Mary, P.O. Box 4064, Greenville, NC 27836 or the American Heart Association, 1927 Candy Lane, Surfside Beach, SC 29575.

The Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel, is in charge of local arrangements.

HAROLD R. STAIR
HYNDMAN, Pa. - Harold Richard Stair, 66, of Hyndman Road, died Friday at his home.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

MARLIN STUMP
YORK, Pa. - Marlin Stump, 60, of York, formerly of Landes, W.Va., died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at his residence.
Born April 15, 1937, at Landes, he was the son of the late Vinceon and Phoebe Jane (Kile) Stump. He also was preceded in death by one sister, Glenna Stump; an infant brother; and two brothers, Raymond and Rubert Stump.

Mr. Stump had been a foreman at Bethlehem Steel, Baltimore, for 29 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, York.

Surviving are his wife, Emily L. (Clark) Stump, whom he married on June 6, 1964; one son, Marlin "Marty" V. Stump, York; one daughter, Theresa J. Stump, St. Louis, Mo.; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one brother, Mervin Stump, Dorcas, W.Va.; and three sisters, Dallie Stump and Neva Kesner, Petersburg, and Marie Kimble, Franklin, W.Va.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Greg Rotruck officiating.

Burial will be in the Stump Family cemetery, Landes.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from noon until the time of services.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

JOHN WILLIAM "BILL" SHUCK SR.
MEYERSDALE, Pa. - John William "Bill" Shuck Sr., 84, of Meyersdale, died Sept. 21, 1998, at his home.
Born April 25, 1914, in Meyersdale, he was a son of the late Asa and Elva (Handwerk) Shuck.

He is survived by his wife, the former Agnes M. "Tillie" Housel; and children, Ruth E. Minick and Marie A. Logue, both of Meyersdale, John W. Shuck Jr., Centerville, Pa., Charles R. Shuck, Sterling, Va., Susan E. Ellington, Centerville, Va., and Rebecca L. Brown, Salisbury; nine grandchildren, B. Scott Logue, Yolonda Arnold, Rachel Shuck, Charlotte Orner, Ashley Ellington, Nicholas Brown, Daniel Brown, Noah Brown and Michael Macrie-Shuck; four great grandchildren, Eric Arnold, John Arnold, Samantha Orner and Matthew Orner; a brother of Dalton Shuck, Mary Jane Reese, Elizabeth Fisher and Evelyn Knieriem, all of Meyersdale.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II. He was retired from Miller Machine Works.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Main Street Brethren Church, Meyersdale, with Pastor Robert Stahl officiating.

Interment will be in Union cemetery, Meyersdale.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale.

JOSEPH S. SHUMAN
THURMONT - Joseph Small Shuman, 81, of 4 Goodwill Circle, Thurmont, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 17, 1916, in Mont Alto, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert Pattison and Lizzie Burnside (Small) Shuman.

Mr. Shuman was employed with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. of Maryland, retiring March 21, 1979. He was a member of the Thurmont United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and was Past Master of Acacia Lodge 155 of Thurmont, AF & AM.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Mae (Carbaugh) Shuman; one daughter, Nancy Jo Shuman, Thurmont; one son, Robert E. Shuman, New Orleans, La.; two grandsons, Robert Michael Shuman, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gregory Scott Shuman, Denver, Colo.; and one great-granddaughter, Madison Alyse Shuman, Colorado Springs.

Graveside services will be held at the Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown, Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Matthew Poole officiating.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers and that memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

The Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, is in charge of arrangements.

MICHAEL P. SISK
HYNDMAN, Pa. - Michael Paul Sisk, 22, of Frederick, Md., formerly of Hyndman, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, at Londonderry Township, Bedford County.
Born March 5, 1976, in Cumberland, Md., he was a son of Paul R. and Karen (Clites) Sisk of Hyndman.

Mr. Sisk is also survived by a brother, Jeff Sisk, currently of Penn College, Williamsport.

Mr. Sisk was a 1994 graduate of Hyndman High School and a graduate of Allegany College, Cumberland, from which he received a degree in Forestry Management. He was employed as a technician by The Davey Tree Expert Company, Gaithersburg, Md. Mr. Sisk attended Cooks Mills Methodist Church, Hyndman, R.D.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. David A. Klink officiating.

Interment will be in Hyndman cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Arbor Foundation, P.O. Box 231, Berea, KY 40403.
