Sherman Keller

April 8, 2003
Mr. Sherman F. Keller, age 69, of 153 McMonagal Lane, Port Matilda, died at 6:45 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2003 at his residence.
Friends will be received at the Derman Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and on Thursday from 1-2 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Church, RD, Port Matilda.

Edwin Gill

April 8, 2003
Edwin L. Gill, 67, of 508 Fourth Street, Tyrone, died at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 203 at the Altoona Hospital.
He was born Septemebr 17, 1935 in Tyrone, the son of George F. Gill and Gladys Elizabeth (Bickel) Forcey.
He is survived by his wife Patricia D. Gill and five sons and one daughter: Steven J. Gill of Virginia, Michael S. Gill of Tyrone, Jody P. Gill of Hollidaysburg, Craig T. Gill of State College, Barry D. Gill of Tyrone and Christina Gill-Roseman of Livonia, Mi.
He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, two sisters, Sondra Hasenstab and Ruth Ann McKinney and one brother Thomas Gill, all of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Edwin L. Gill Jr.
He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Tyrone and a 1954 graduate of the Tyrone High School.
He retired in 1992 as a Quality Control Lab Technician from Westvaco Corp., Tyrone mill, after 37 years of service.
For many years he was a free-lance news photographer for WTAJ-TV and other TV stations.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 11, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Tyrone with Rev. Dr. Dennis Reedy officiating. Entoumbment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
Friends will be received at the Derman Funeral Home on Friday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Greta Walk

April 8, 2003
Mrs. Greta Walk, age 67, of 3621 Pine Avenue, Erie, died Monday, April 7, 2003 at 7:20 p.m. at Hamot Hospital, Erie.
She was born January 17, 1936 in Warren, the daughter of Elmer and Charlotte Kephart Lindquist and in 1957 was married to Blair A. Walk who survives.
Also surviving is one son, Gordon Walk and wife Martha of Erie, three grandchildren, Sara, Margaret and Wade, all of Erie and a brother Steven Lindquist and wife Ellen of Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Walk was a graduate of Warren High School and had been employed as a hairdresser, food preparer and was serving as a wedding consultant before her passing.
Funeral service for Mrs. Walk will be held Thursday, April 10, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home with Pastor Jay Jones officiating. Interment will be made in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Friends may call the funeral home from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday.

Annabelle Gummo

April 7, 2003

Mrs. Annabelle Gummo, age 70, of 146 Spruce Street, Tipton, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003 at her residence after a brief illness.
She was born April 22, 1932 in Tyrone, a daughter of Harry H. and Maude I. (Tennis) Sprankle.
She was married May 14, 1951 at Winchester, Va. to Charles E. Gummo Sr.
She is survived by her husband and six children: Bonny L. Gummo at home, Dennis L. (Denise) Gummo of Warriors Mark, David B. (Julie) Gummo of Warriors Mark, Albert (Helen) Gummo of Bellwood, Charles E. (Becky) Gummo, Jr. of Tyrone, and Ida M. (Karl) Price of Tyrone.
She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was the last in her immediate family, being preceded in death by sisters Mabel Wertz, Lucy M. Sprankle, Agnes Riling and a brother Jesse M. Sprankle.
She was a member of the Wesleyan Bible Holiness, Tyrone Mission.
She was a dedicated homemaker.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Derman Funeral Home with Rev. Peggy Bonsell and Donald Roher officiating. Interment will be at Eastlawn Cemetery, Snyder Township.
Friends will be received at the Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m.

Bradley Gross

April 7, 2003
Bradley W. Gross, 34, of Huntingdon Furnace Road, Tyrone, died Saturday, April 5, 2003 at 7:30 a.m. as a result of injuries received in an accident at M&B; Lumber, RD #1 Tyrone.
He was born March 23, 1969 in Altona, a son of Alfred Gross of Baree and Beverly (Golden) Gross of Tyrone who both survive.
Also surviving is a son Brandon of Tyrone, two sisters, Hollie Langford of Shrewsbury, Danielle Harris of Tyrone and his fiancee Joey Ieraci of Tyrone.
Brad was a truck driver and worked at the sawmill for M & B Lumber, RD #1 Tyrone. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church, Tyrone and was a 1987 graduate of Tyrone Area High School. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed racing cars and spending time with his son.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Feller Memorial Home. Interment will be at Burket Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m.

Edward Gensimore

April 4, 2003
Edward R. Gensimore, 78, of Centre Hall died Thursday, April 3, 2003 at Centre Community Hospital.
Friends will be received Sunday April 6, 2003 from 1-3 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Service, 226 Pennsylvania Avenue, Centre Hall.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 7, 2003 at Grace United Methodist Church, 127 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, Centre Hall.

Clair Francis Merryman

June 16, 2003

Mr. Clair Francis Merryman, age 83, formerly of 443 West 15th Street, Tyrone, and a guest at Epworth Manor since November 2002 died Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 1:15 p.m. at the Manor.
He was born on May 23, 1920 in Tyrone, the eldest child of Toner and Olive Goss Merryman. On May 27, 1949 at the United Brethren Parsonage in Tyrone he was married by Reverend Budd Smith to Maryann Leeper who survives. Also surviving are three children- Richard of Tyrone; Nancy Bolinda of Fowler Hollow, Port Matilda and Lynne Merryman and wife Teresa of Fowler Hollow, Port Matilda. Also surviving are four grandchildren- Tracy Bolinda, Shelly Bolinda, Michael Merryman and Alicia Merryman. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters- Lois Cowher, Vivian Miller and Margaret Vonada; a beloved cousin Viola Whittle and an infant brother Lawrence.
Mr. Merryman worked as a custodian and food vendor at Penn State University from 1967 to 1982. Prior to working at Penn State, he worked as a crane and heavy equipment operator for Westvaco of Tyrone from 1946 to 1967. During World War II he served as a heavy equipment operator with the Navy Seabees from 1943 until 1946. He served on Iwo Jima with the Navy Seabees. Prior to World War II he worked in an aircraft plant in Buffalo, NY.
He was a 1937 graduate of Port Matilda High School. He was baptized in the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in 1924 and became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tyrone in 1949. He was also a member of the Jaffa Temple, Altoona and the Tyrone Shrine Club.
His hobbies included farming his 98 acre farm in Fowler Hollow, running heavy equipment, reading World War II history, watching car races and teaching his grandchildren to drive.
At the request of the family there will be no viewing or visitation. A private Memorial Service for Mr. Merryman will be held at the convenience of the family with his pastor Robert Dunkelberger officiating. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Church Cemetery near Fowler Hollow. Contributions in his memory are requested to the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church, c/o Lois E. Bailey, 461 Douglas Drive State College, PA 16801 or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, Bethesda, MD 20814.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., 115 W. 10th St., Tyrone, PA 16686.

Leo K. Nearhoof

June 16, 2003

Leo K. Nearhoof, 85, of 107 Prospect St., Port Matilda, died Sunday, June 14, 2003 at Centre Community Hospital.
Born Jan. 31, 1918 in Taylor Township, he was the son of the late Elmer and Willa Wilson Nearhoof.
On Nov. 13, 1943 he married Verna M. Dillen, who preceded him on April 22, 1999.
He was of the Baptist Faith and had been employed at Penn State University in the Maintenance Department as a painter. He retired in 1980.
He was a life time resident of The Port Matilda Company where he did maintenance work for the people in the community. He was an avid Penn State fan, an avid hunter and loved the outdoors. He was a devoted husband and father who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He was a graduate of Port Matilda High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he participated in the Normandy Invasion.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Goss; a granddaughter, Cherie Goss; and a brother, Kyle Nearhoof.
He is survived by two daughters, Sharon J. Ripka of Bellefonte and Janice M. Wyland of State College; a son, James L. Nearhoof; eight grandchildren and five grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 10-11 a.m. at the Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home in Milesburg on Saturday, June 28.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2003 at the funeral home with Rev. David J. Spaugh officiating. Interment will be in Port Matilda Cemetery, Worth Township.
