Lloyd E. Geer

July 11, 1998

Lloyd E. Geer, 91, of Cresco, died Thursday, July 4, 1998, in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Ora B. (Braily) Geer at home.

Born in Wauseon, OH, a son of the late George and Sarah (Schwartzendruber) Geer and a resident of Monroe County since 1963.

He was a high school principal in Bryan, OH until World War II when he joined the Navy serving as a Lieutenant in Norfolk, VA until 1945. After serving for several governmental agencies until 1963, he became employed at Tobyhanna Army Depot, retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Pocono Mountain Rotary Club, Candensis United Methodist Church and served on the boards of Barrett Friendly Library and the Burnley Workshop.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons , Roger Geer of Gaithesburg, MD, Stephen Geer of St. Paul, MN, a daughter Leslie Geer of Brick, NJ, a brother, Dr. Paul Geer of Metamora, OH, two sisters , Frances Riker of Bowling Green, OH, and Bernice Doane of Wauseon, OH, four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

The family would like to welcome friends to a Memorial Service which will be held at Cook's Touch Restaurant in Mountainhome at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 1998.

Final disposition took place through the Humanity Gifts Registry, Philadelphia, PA.

Arrangements are by the Lanterman and Allen Funeral Home, .

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of One's Choice.

July 11, 1998

Charles M. Fries, of Tannersville, died there Saturday. He was 91.

Born in Lancaster, a son of the late Charles M. and Anna Mae (McAleer) Fries, Sr. He was a resident of Tannersville for the last nine years. Prior to that, he lived in the Ft. Lauderdale area.

He was a retired printer with W.T. Armstrong Co. in Philadelphia for 30 years, retiring in 1971. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Tannersville and Knights of Columbus Philadelphia Council.

He is survived by four daughters , Jean Mulholland of Tannersville, with whom he was residing, Teresa White house of Greentown, Veronica Desai of Richboro, and Catherine Bock of Mesa, AZ; three sons , Carl Fries of Germantown, MD; Joseph Fries of Sterling Junction, MA; John Fries of Long Beach, CA; fifteen grandchildren and six grandchildren.

Memorial funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, July 14 at 11 a.m. from Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Tannersville with the Rev. Father Henry E. Zatotocki as celebrant. Cremation will take place in the H. G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg. The Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 N. Ninth St., Stroudsburg is in charge of the arrangements.

Eugene L. Ferrera

July 11, 1998

Eugene L. Ferrera, 65, of Albrightsville, formerly of Midland Beach, Staten Island, New York, died Saturday at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem.

He was the husband of Carol (Rosenthal) Ferrera. They had been married for 27 years.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Louis and Lina (Panazzolo) Ferrera.

He had worked as a dispatcher for Rich Incorporated in New York City for nine and a half years.

He was a Navy Veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post #927 in Gilbert.

He was of the Catholic faith.

In addition to his wife Carol, he is survived by a son, Louis Ferrera of Staten Island, NY and a daughter, Lena Ferrera of Staten Island, NY; and three grandchildren, Ann Ferrera, Andrea Ferrera and Andrew Ferrera, all of Staten Island, NY.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc., Route 209, Gilbert, with the Rev. Father William McCrawley officiating. Entombment will follow the services at the Northampton Memorial Shrine, Inc., in Easton. Viewing will be held 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday and 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, PA 18331.

Alice P. Mackes

July 10, 1998

Alice P. Mackes, 83, of Effort, died Friday in Pleasant Valley Manor, Snydersville.

She was the wife of the late Ralph Mackes.

Born in Effort, she was a daughter of the late Austin and Abby (Kresge) Weiss.

She had worked as a nurses aid at Brokmont Health Care Center in Effort for eight years. Prior to that she had worked at Nova Sportswear in Brodheadsville for 10 years.

She was a amember of Effort United Methodist Church where she had been the organist, pianist and choir director for 45 years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Fairview Senior Citizens in Brodheadsville and the West End Republican Womens' Club.

She is survived by three sons , Ronald Mackes of Gilbert, and Eugene and Barry Mackes, both of Effort; a daughter, Marilyn Haydt of Effort; a brother, John Weiss of Effort; a sister, Esther Rotenberger of Lady Lakes, FL; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Weiss, and by two brothers , Albert Kresge and Percy Weiss.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday from the Effort United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gerald Miller and the Rev. David Felker officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Effort. A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service from the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Effort United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 545, Effort, PA 18330.

The Kresge Funeral Home, Rt. 209 Brodheadsville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Ernest D. Frantz

July 11, 1998

Ernest D. B. Frantz, 80, of RD 3 Kunkletown, died Saturday in St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill.

He was the husband of Kathryn (Buskirk) Frantz. They observed their 56th wedding anniversary in May.

Born in Kunkletown, he was a son of the late Elmer Frantz and the late Lizzie (Borger) Frantz Meckes.

He had worked at Deiters foundry in Cherryville for 40 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of St. Matthew's United Church of Christ in Kunkletown, where he had served on the church council and been the church caretaker for many years.

He was also a member of the Chestnut Ridge Senior Citizens in Kunkletown, the Kunkletown Rod and Gun Club and the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons , Maynard and Carl Frantz, both of Kunkletwon; a daughter, Sandra Grolier of Nazareth; a brother, Melvin Meckes of Kunkletown; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Ernest D. Frantz.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday from the Kresge Funeral Home, Route 29 Brodheadsville, with the Rev. Robert Harting officiating. Burial wil be in St. Matthews Cemetery, Kunkletown. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Rita Catherine Hynn

July 11, 1998

Rita Catherine Hynn, 81, of East Stroudsburg, died Saturday in the Slate Belt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Pen Argyl. Employed earlier in life at the former Woolworth Company in Easton. She also was employed at Buck Hill Falls Resort, Buck Hill Falls.

Born in Bally, November 2, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Elias S. and Mary (Mutler) Hynn. She was of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by three sons , Robert P. of Nazareth, Richard D. of Tyrone, NM and Victor Capone, Jr. of Minisink Hills; seven grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Parry.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Schmidt Home, Inc., Wind Gap with calling hours Wednesday, 10 a.m. to the time of the service at the funeral home. Internment will take place at Wind Gap Cemetery, Wind Gap.

Raymond P. Jones

July 12, 1998

Raymond P. Jones, 77, of Cresco, died Sunday in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Beatrice A. (Rembecki) Jones, to whom he had been married for 50 years.

Born on April 19, 1921, in Canadensis, he was the son of the late Samuel L. and Catherine M. (Hoke) Jones and had lived in the area all of his life. He had worked as a chef for the Barrett High School and for Buck Hill Falls; was bookkeeper for J.A. Reinhardt, Canadensis; assistant superintendent of highways for PennDOT and was the Barrett Township tax collector for 28 years, retiring in 1994.

A graduate of Barrett High School, he was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Evans-Blitz Post 922 American Legion, Canadensis, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1106, Stroudsburg.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Paul G. Jones of Cresco; Raymond T. Jones of Mesa, Ariz.; Ronald J. Jones of Long Pond; Cynthia A. Hartman of Albany, N.Y.; David J. Jones of Hop Bottom and Christine M. Jones of Williamsport; a sister, Catherine "Kit" Somers of Stroudsburg; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a viewing on Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the funeral home with the Rev. George Alt officiating. Cremation will follow in the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Barrett Township Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Box 105, Cresco, PA 18326.

Dorothy L. Johnson

July 10, 1998

Dorothy L. Johnson, 63, of 50 South Second Street, Easton, and formerly of East Bangor, died Friday, July 10, at her residence.

She was the widow of Harvey B. Johnson, who died on March 3, 1970.

Born October 13, 1934, in East Bangor, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Mary E. (Jones) Everett.

Mrs. Johnson was last employed by the Quality Box Company, Nazareth, retiring in 1996. Prior to this, she was employed as a housekeeper at the former Commodore Inn, Phillipsburg, N.J. and prior to this she was employed by the former Portland Novelty Company, Portland.

She is survived by one son, Ernest B. Everett of Coplay; one brother, George W. Everett of Pennsylvania , and two grandsons.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's Cemetery, Bangor. There will be no viewing. Contributions may be made to the family, care of the funeral home.
