Anthony Sacuskie
COAL TOWNSHIP - Anthony Sacuskie, 78, of 848 W. Pine St., Coal Township, died at 12:43 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at his residence. He had been in ill health for the past nine months.

Born Feb. 21, 1925, in Atlas, he was a son of the late Rose Broniskovna. His wife, Josephine Summergill, whom he married May 15, 1971 in Berwyn, survives.

Also surviving are: a son, Donald Sacuskie, Modesto, CA; a step-son, Harry Fornwalt and a step-daughter, Karen (Fornwalt) Wert, both of Port Royal; eight grandchildren; a sister, Mary lou Malukas, Phoenixville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a truck driver, retired.

He is a member of Our Lady Hope Church, the VFW, the DAV and the American Legion.

He served in the U.S. Army with Co. 1 101st Infantry Regiment 26th Infantry Division, having entered active service on June 1, 1943, serving in Rhineland, Northern France, Central Europe, and Ardennes-Alsace, and he received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Luxembourg on Jan. 2, 1945. He was honorably discharged Jan. 8, 1946.

His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Karwacki officiating. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

A viewing will be held from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the Christian Vigil Service at 8:15 p.m. and also from 9a.m. until the service time Friday at the funeral home.

The Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin, is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph E. 'Pap' Saner
MIFFLINTOWN - Ralph E. "Pap" Saner, 91, of Mifflintown RR 2 died at 4:52 am Sunday, March 9, 2003 at Lewistown Hospital.

Born April 30, 1911 in Walker Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late John and Phoebe (Wert) Saner. His wife, Olive (Ferster) Saner, whom he married April 21, 1935 survives.

Also surviving are 4 sons and one daughter: Elroy Saner and his wife, Mary, Thompsontown RR 2, Donald Saner and his wife, Loma, Mifflintown RR 4, Charles Saner and his wife, Shirley, Thompsontown RR 2, Frank Saner and his wife, Linda, 52 Meetinghouse Lane, Lewisburg, Lois King and her husband, Mark, Port Royal RR 1; one brother, Roy Saner, Lansdale; one sister, Mary Ella Saner, Belleville; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Fae Saner, three brothers , John, Henry, and Clair, and two sisters , Ruth Wortman and Anna Saner.

He was a farmer his entire life and continued farming as a hobby after he retired in 1973. He was a member of Lost Creek Mennonite Church for many years and recently a member of Living Water Christian Fellowship. He enjoyed attending antique tractor shows, eating at Stop 35 and Family House, and visiting with friends and family.

His service will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday at Lost Creek Mennonite Church with Rev. Gary Krabill and Rev. Roy Brubaker officiating. Interment will be in Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery.

There will be a viewing Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown and from 10:00 am until the time of the services Wednesday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to TLC Home Care, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Kenneth R. Sausman Jr.
BURKE, VA - Kenneth R. Sausman Jr., 57, of Burke, VA, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax, VA.

Born Jan. 13, 1946, in Lewistown, he was the son of Sarah (Frey) Sausman of Mifflintown and the late Kenneth R. Sausman Sr.

Also surviving are a sister, Linda Sausman Titzell and her husband, Lynn, of Mechanicsburg; a niece, Melissa Fritsch and her husband, Rick, of Oak Harbor, WA; and twin grandnieces, Meredith and Katherine Fritsch.

He was a graduate of East Juniata High School, Susquehanna University, Miami University and Penn State University.

He was employed by the U.S. Census Bureau as a supervisory mathematical statistician since May 1976.

He was a member of Messiah United Methodist Church, Springfield, VA.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown. Burial will follow in Goodwill Cemetery, Bunkertown.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at his church in Springfield, VA.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044, or to Messiah United Methodist Church, 6215 Rolling Road, Springfield, VA 22152.

B. Irene Saxton
ALTOONA - B. Irene Saxton, 73, of 2301 Broad Ave., Altoona, died at 4:20 a.m. Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare William Penn.

Born March 25, 1930, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Donald Kimball and Stella Beatrice (Shotsberger) Saxton.

Surviving are: eleven nieces and nephews, Cheryl Peterson, Saratoga Springs, NY, Richard Donald Saxton, Jr., Shamokin Dam, Dwight Saxton, Selinsgrove, Matthew Saxton, Alstead, NH, Jennifer Saxton, Ashfield, Mass., Cathy Sylvester, Poway, CA, Cathi Jo Durr, Schenectady, NY, Richard Dunn, Jr., Loudonville, NY, P. Allen Peoples, Los Angeles, CA, Kimbra Ferguson, Reedsville, and Billie Jo Jones, Belleville; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews; a brother, Richard Donald Saxton, Shamokin Dam; and a sister, P. Joann Dunn, Schenectady, NY.

She was preceded in death by a brother, T. Dale Saxton, a sister, Sharon Peoples, and a great-nephew, Dustin Saxton.

She was an operator supervisor for Bell Telephone for more than 30 years.

She was a Lutheran by Faith and a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with Rev. Wayne Nuthler and Rev. Bernard Carpenter officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Anna J. Schlegel
MIFFLINTOWN - Anna J. Schlegel, 96, of 105 North St., Mifflintown, died at 2:25 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Carlisle Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 16, 1907, in Port Royal, she was a daughter of the late George and Etta Dunn. Her husband, Ralph W. Schlegel, preceded her in death March 22, 1983.

Surviving are: two sons , Robert M. Schlegel, Mifflintown, and Gerald E. Schlegel, Mexico, PA; three daughters , Doris Stoner, Dillsburg, Mona Jury, RD5 Mifflintown, and Donna Fogleman, Mechanicsburg; a sister, Lenore Nearhood, Middletown; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by 5 sisters , 3 brothers and a son, Carl L. Schlegel, Sr.

She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown.

She was a homemaker, earlier in life she was employed at Milliken's Restaurant, Mifflintown.

Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Mifflintown Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., with Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery.

A viewing will held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent to her church: Messiah Lutheran Church, 3 S. Third St., Mifflintown, PA 17059.

Oschell J. Scott
BLAIRS MILLS - Oschell J. Scott, 83, of Blairs Mills, died at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the home of his daughter, Leona Coons in Concord.

Born Sept. 18, 1919, in Blairs Mills, he was a son of the late Howard A. and Frances (Nelson) Scott. His wife, Dorothy Lee Scott died Oct. 4, 1996.

Surviving are: three daughters , Leona Coons, Concord, Beverly Scott, St. Petersburg, FL, and Ginger wife of Daryl Best, Honey Grove; two sons , Oschell F. and Benny Scott, both of Blairs Mills; two sisters , Dolly Burdge and Betty Fegan, both of Blairs Mills; and 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry L. Scott and four brothers and three sisters .

He was an electrician for Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg retiring after over 30 years employment.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a member of Blairs Mills Brethren in Christ, Blairs Mills. He was also a member of Mount Union VFW Post 5754.

His funeral service will be private at Blairs Mills Brethren in Christ with Revs. Harold E. Bowers and Judy Rowles officiating. Interment will be in Shade Valley Cemetery, Richvale. military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Post 24 Color Guard and the VFW Post 1754 Firing Squad, both of Huntingdon.

A viewing will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday at John L. Agett Funeral Home, Dry Run.

Darwin L. Scratchard
SOUTHLAKE, TX - Darwin L. Scratchard, 67, a retired manager of corporate real estate, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, in Grapevine.

Surviving are: his wife of 28 years, Bethann Scratchard; three sons , Matthew Scratchard, Tracy Scratchard, and Brian Scratchard; a daughter, Kim Walters; two sisters , Beverly Spinelli and Roxine Fish; a brother, James Fish; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Catherine Scratchard, and his foster parents, Jim and Ruth Fish.

He retired from Southwestern Bell and worked for eight years driving bus #46 for the Carroll Independent School District.

His memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Chapel, 5725 Colleyville Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Carroll Education Foundation in Southlake or to American Cancer Society.

Barbara Brace Seeley
BELLEFONTE - Barbara Brace Seeley, 69, of 219 Yorkshire Lane, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania , and of Deer Isle, Maine, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at 10:05 p.m. in the Centre Community Hospital, State College, Pennsylvania . Her death was sudden and unexpected.

She was born in Hanover, Grafton County, New Hampshire, a daughter of the late Gerald Warner and Huldah Potter Laird Brace. Twice married, her first husband was Richard Allan Gotshalk, who survives. On May 21, 1967, she was married to Ralph M. Seeley, who survives. They combined two families and raised six children, all 8 to 13 years old at the start. During that period, they lived in Stormstown, where they lived until October 2002, when they moved to Spring Township, Centre County.

In 1967 she received a Bachelor's Degree in English "Cum Laude" from Penn State University, obtained while acting as a single mother of 3 children. Barbara was a birthright Unitarian, and an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County since 1967. She was a committed volunteer. Among her commitments were driving for the Park Forest Day Nursery; telephone answering for the Latchkey Children's Program PhoneFriend; member of the task forces to establish the Food Bank; and to establish a shelter for the homeless (Centre House); member of the Temporary Housing Board; served 6 years on the board of children and Youth Services and one year as President; Hospice volunteer for several years; tutor for Mid-State Literacy Council; including 1.5 years at Rockview State Correctional Institution; board member of the Memorial Society of Central Pennsylvania , and the Hemlock Society. She was a board member, secretary, and a meter reader for the Upper Half Moon Water Association for ten years. She initiated the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program in Centre County, and coordinated that for 13 years. For some years she opened her home to abused women, before the Women's Resource Center has a shelter.

In recognition of her volunteer work, Barbara was accorded the Benjamin Rush Award by the Centre County Medical Society in 1984. Among her memberships were the Half Moon Garden Club; American Association of University Women; Nittany NOW (and newsletter editor); charter member of the Pennsylvania Association for volunteerism; University Women's Hiking Group; Keystone Trails Association; Mid State Trail Association; Quehanna Area Trails Club; the Centre County Historical Society; and president for 6 years of the Potters Guild. She was membership chair and newsletter editor for the Ridge and Valley Outings Club.

Barbara first arrived at the Brace family property at Deer Isle, Maine in 1936, and later administered the property after her parents died. Her cremains will be scattered on Penobscot Bay at Deer Isle, by her family in July. At Deer Isle she was a member of the Walking Trails Group and the Island Heritage Trust.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph M. Seeley and by two children, Lincoln A. Gotshalk and his wife Paula T., of Hilo, HI., and their sons Brace A. and Drew R.; by R. Walter Gotshalk of Lewistown, PA and his daughter Megan M.; by three step-children, Ralph M. Seeley III of Washington , DC; Leanna M. Allen and her husband Jim, of Goshen, New Jersey; and their children; Alyssa Leah and Nathan James; and Linnea Riedel and her husband Oskar, of Duvall and Loomis, Washington ; and by her brother, C. Loring Brace and his wife, Mimi, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and their children, Charles, Roger, and Hudson.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Diane Gotshalk of Seattle, Washington , and by her brother, Gerald Warner Brace, Jr., of Paris, France.

There will be no funeral ceremony. A Memorial Service to celebrate Barbara's life will be held in October at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County, 780 Waupelani Drive Extension, State College.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Barbara's name may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County, 780 Waupelani Drive Extension, State College, PA 16801 or to the Women's Resource Center of Centre County, 140 West Nittany Avenue, State College, PA 16801.

The family is being served by the James L. Schwartz Home for Funerals, 247 Chestnut Street, Mifflinburg, PA.

Laura E. Seigler
THOMPSONTOWN - Laura E. Seigler, 92, formerly of Thompsontown, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, in Brookline Manor, Mifflintown.

Born Nov. 5, 1910, in McAlisterville. She was the widow of Walter P. "Boots" Seigler who passed away in 1990.

Surviving are: a son, Richard W. Seigler, Elkhart, IN; two daughters , Lenora M. Yohn, Millerstown and G. Arlene Little, Newport; 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: two sons , Walter P. Seigler, Jr., in 1972, and E. Leon Seigler in 1984; and a daughter, Anna E. Felty in 1995.

She had worked for Viscoe in Lewistown and the Millerstown and Thompsontown Garment Factories. She retired in 1976 from Rae-sel Factory, Port Royal.

She was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church, McAlisterville, the Newport VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Millerstown Moose-50 year member of the Ladies Auxiliary, and ILGWU Garment Union.

She enjoyed bingo, dancing, flowers, and sitting on her front porch.

Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport. Interment will be in Lost Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, McAlisterville.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service time Friday at the funeral home.

Marvin C. 'Marv' Shadel
SELINSGROVE - Marvin C. "Marv" Shadel, 78, of RR5 Selinsgrove and Sebastian, FL, entered into eternal rest at 7:15 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2003, at his residence in Selinsgrove following a brief illness.

Born Aug. 21, 1924, in Hummels Wharf, Snyder County, he was the son of the late William and Minnie (Boardman) Shadel. On April 16, 1949, he was married to Loretta E. Kuhns, who preceded him on Nov. 6, 1995.

Surviving are: a loving companion of many years, Norma Mark, Orlando, FL; a sister, Lorene Inch, Selinsgrove; a nephew, Stanley Inch, Freeburg; three nieces, June Shirk, RR2 Mount Pleasant Mills, Janet Sigfried, Selinsgrove and Patricia Hassinger, Camp Hill; a very close grand-nephew, Danny W. Shadel and his wife, Christine D., McAlisterville; several other grand nieces and grand nephews; great-grand nephews and great-grand nieces, notably Cody M. Shadel, whom Marv and Loretta lovingly adopted as their grandson.

Mr. Shadel was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence William Shadel, and a nephew, Clarence William Shadel, on July 6, 1986.

Mr. Shadel graduated in 1942 from Sunbury High School. After high school, he was employed at the Middletown Air Depot. In 1943, Mr. Shadel was inducted in the U.S. Army, serving with the Third Infantry Division in Casablanca, then French Morocco, and later in Oran, Algeria, and Southern Italy and from there to Anzio beach head for five months, ending in Rome. The campaign then focused in southern France until the war ended with the last objective being Beaches Garden at Hitler's retreat. Mr. Shadel had 495 days of combat with his division and was honorably discharged from his service duties in December 1945.

He was then employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a fireman and was promoted to locomotive engineer in 1955. After his employment for Penn Central and Conrail, Mr. Shadel retired in 1984. He and his late wife then purchased a home in Sebastian, FL, and spent the winters in Florida at their home.

He was a member of Christ Community United Methodist Church, RR5 Selinsgrove American Legion, Post 597, New Berlin.

Additionally, Mr. Shadel was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 24, PA. He was a member of the Shade Mountain Golf Club, Middleburg, and a former member of the Susquehanna Valley Country Club, Selinsgrove.

Mr. Shadel was a competitive and accomplished golfer and well-liked by his many friends.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003, from Christ Community United Methodist Church, RR5 Selinsgrove with Rev. Barry C. Robison officiating.

Burial with full military honors accorded by the American Legion Post 25, Selinsgrove, will be made in Orchard Hills Cemetery and Memorial Park, Shamokin Dam.

Family and friends will gather for the viewing 7-9 p.m. Monday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in loving memory of Mr. Shadel to: SUN Home Health Hospice, 61 Duke St., Northumberland, PA 17857.
