Smith, Albert

February 27, 2000

Albert F. Smith, of Schooley Street, Exeter, died Sunday at the Hospice Care, Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.

Funeral arrangements are pending from the Metcalfe & Shaver Funeral Home Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming.

Robert Smith

May 22, 1998

Robert E. Smith, 75, of Laporte, died Friday at his home.

Born in Philadelphia, May 3, 1923, he was the son of the late William P. and Laura Fiedler Smith.

He graduated from the Trevorton High School in 1941.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served in the Pacific Theater.

After the war, he graduated from East Stroudsburg State Teacher's College and later received his master's degree from Bucknell University.

He taught school for several years and then began working for the Pennsylvania National Mutual Casualty Insurance Co., Harrisburg, retiring in 1988 after more than 35 years of service.

He was a member of the Zion Chapel, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Dushore.

He was also a member of Sonestown Post 601 American Legion and a member of the Eagles Mere-Laporte Lions Club and the Eagles Mere Country Club.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanne L. Boughner Smith, in 1989.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy, at home; son, Col. Robert E. Smith Jr., U.S. Army, Fort Campbell, Ky.; daughter, Shelly J. Smith Girardeau, New York, N.Y.; one grandson.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Laporte, with the Rev. Eddie A. Nilsen officiating.

Interment will be in the Mountain Ash Cemetery, Laporte.

Friends may call at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Memorials donations may be made to the Sullivan County Unit of the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 243, Dushore, 18614.

Arrangements are by the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore.

SMUTKO, ANNA

October 28, 1999

Anna (Danko) Elko Smutko, 90, formerly of Wyoming Avenue in Exeter, died Wednesday at Manor Care Health Care Services in Kingston.

Born Sept. 11, 1909, in Exeter, she was a daughter of the late John Sr. and Elizabeth (Chintala) Danko.

She was employed as a cook at Grico's Restaurant in Exeter, for 25 years before her retirement

She was a member of St. Anthony's Church in Exeter.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Michael Elko; second husband, Joseph Smutko; daughter, Nancy Kubasti; sisters , Margaret Fenner and Mary Voda; and brothers , John, Michael and Thomas Danko.

Surviving are her son, Bernard Elko, Exeter; sister, Agnes Volanski, Allentown; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Frank A. Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church.

Interment will be in St. John's Slovak Cemetery in Exeter.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday

Snipas, Robert D.

January 19, 2000

Robert D. Snipas, 19, of Dorrance Township, died Wednesday.

Born Feb. 4, 1980, in Kingston, he was the son of Robert and Evelyn (Intelicato) Snipas. A 1998 graduate of Crestwood High School, he was formerly employed by the A&B Door Co. He was a member of St. Jude's Roman Catholic Church, Mountaintop, and attended Luzerne County Community College.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Joseph Intelicato; and grandmother, Frances Snipas.

Surviving, in addition to are his parents, are his sister, Christina; brother, Matthew; grandmother, Teresa Intelicato; grandfather, Anthony Snipas; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Desiderio Funeral Home, Mountaintop, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Jude's Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Byzantine Cemetery, Dallas. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Snyder, Blodwen

March 3, 2000

Blodwen Morgan Snyder, 103, of Midlothian, Va., and formerly of Kingston and Scranton, died Friday at the Brandermill Woods Nursing Home, Midlothian.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth Ann (Morgan) Morgan. She was educated in the Scranton area schools and resided in Scranton until 1925 when she moved to Kingston. She moved to Virginia in 1992.

Before retiring, she was employed as a floor lady at Lackawanna Laundry. She was a former member of the Concord United Church of Christ, Scranton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Henry Snyder.

Surviving are her son, Charles, Boonton, N.J.; daughters , Lois Atkins, Midlothian; Joan Struthers, Homosassa, Fla.; sister, Margaret Reid, Dickson City; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday from the Bomberger-Lesko Funeral Home, Inc., 1660 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with the Rev. Richard Bayles officiating. Interment will be in Abington Hills Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Marie Snyder

April 21, 1998

Marie T. Snyder, 78, formerly of Madison Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Nov. 6, 1919, in Wilkes-Barre, she was daughter of the late Patrick J. and Bessie Berger Mulreany.

A lifelong resident of the area, she attended the Wilkes-Barre schools and was employed in the garment industry for many years. She later was employed at Kinder Manufacturing, Wilkes-Barre.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Wilkes-Barre.

She was also a member of the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union and the NEAA Ladies Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank R. Snyder; a grandson, Scott E. Snyder; sisters , Nan Sanford and Margaret McVeigh; brothers , John and Edward Mulreany.

Surviving are a daughter, Debra Albert, Wilkes-Barre; a son, Edward F. Snyder, Wilkes-Barre; seven grandchildren; two great-grandsons; a sister, Betty Blais, Jupiter, Fla.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday from the E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Scott E. Snyder Scholarship Fund, Bishop Hoban High School, 159 S. Pennsylvania Blvd., Wilkes-Barre, 18702.

SODROSKY, HELEN

October 31, 1999

Helen Irene Sodrosky of 14 West Chestnut Street, Wilkes-Barre, passed away Sunday afternoon at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

She was born March 25, 1916, in Nanticoke, Pa.

She was the daughter of the late Peter and Anna Gregga Malshefski.

Irene married Michael Sodrosky in September of 1940.

She is preceded in death her husband, Michael, who died in 1996. She is also preceded in death by sisters , Anna and Mary, and brothers , John and Leonard.

She is survived by two daughters and their spouses, attorney Frank and Marlene Niemiec of Towanda, Pa.; Dr. Thomas and Michalene Mangan of Rochester, Minn.

She has four grandchildren, Michael Niemiec, of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; and Sarah, Maggie, and Zachary Mangan of Rochester, Minn.

She is also survived by three sisters , Marge Lushefski, of Patterson Grove, Pa.; Verna Shipkowski, of Middletown, Pa.; and Magdaline Baran, of Orlando, Fla.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Michael J. Mikelski Funeral Home, 293 S. River St., Plains. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church, N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Interment will at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Nanticoke, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Main St., Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Sokolnicki, Stasia

February 24, 2000

Stasia D. Sokolnicki, 86, of Southington, Conn.; formerly of Glen Lyon, Newport Township, died Feb. 24 at Southington Care Center.

Born April 17, 1913, in Nanticoke, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Mary (Kanyuck) Beldowicz. She graduated in 1934 from Wilkes-Barre General Hospital as a registered nurse. She worked as a visiting nurse. She and her husband owned and operated a pharmacy in Glen Lyon.

Surviving are her sons , John, Madison, Conn.; and Leo Paul, Southington, Conn.; brothers , Dr. Allen Scott, Shickshinny; and Eugene Scott, Somerville; N.J.; three sisters , Adeline Penders, Glendora, N.J.; Dorothy Wrona, Midlothian, Va.; and Betty Johnson, Jamestown, N.Y.; two grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were from the Della Vecchia Funeral Home. Interment was in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery.

Sokoloski, Geraldine

April 7, 2000

Geri Sokoloski, of Mountain View Drive, Nanticoke, died Friday in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Dec. 30, 1939, in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late John and Johanna Iwanicki Ulewicz. She was a 1957 graduate of GAR Memorial High School and attended the Empire Beauty School, both in Wilkes-Barre.

She worked at Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania , Wilkes-Barre, for a few years and at Robbins Door & Sash, Wilkes-Barre, for 18 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of St. Mary's Church of the Maternity, Wilkes-Barre.

Surviving are her husband, John; daughter, Darlene Modla, Hanover Township; sister, Barbara Petroski, Bear Creek; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church of the Maternity. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, West Wyoming. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the SPCA of Luzerne County.

SPEICHER, ALFRED

October 31, 1999

Alfred J. Speicher, 58, of Pittston Boulevard, Bear Creek Township, died Sunday at Hospice Community Care Inpatient Unit at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born July 25, 1941, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Ellsworth and Kathryn (Tierney) Speicher.

He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Wilkes-Barre, class of 1959, and King's College, class of 1975.

He was employed as an assessor for Luzerne County and served as a supervisor for Bear Creek Township.

He was a member of the Parish Community of Blessed Sacrament, St. Francis of Assisi and St. John the Baptist Churches, Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre.

He also was a member of the Stanley Cooper Sr. Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Sugar Bush Hunting Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, the former Anne Zaledonis; sons , Alfred John "A.J." Speicher, Lansdale; Eric J. Speicher, at home; brother, Joseph A. Speicher, Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre; and one grandson.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church.

Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Bear Creek.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Community Care.
