Diane Ruth Passan
Member of United Brother’s Synagogue

Diane Ruth Passan, 58, of 291 High St., died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at her residence. She was the wife of Gary Watros.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Margie (Oster) Passan. She lived in Natick, Mass. for many years before moving to Bristol one year ago.

Ms. Passan was the laboratory manager for Radiology Research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston for 28 years.

She was a member of the United Brother’s Synagogue, and the Newton, Mass. Choral Society and Interfaith Choir.

Ms. Passan is an Ohio State University graduate.

In addition to her husband, she leaves a son, Adam Staley of Bristol; a daughter, Juliane Watros, of Bristol and a brother, Richard Passan of Solon, Ohio.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family at their home, 291 High St., on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. and to attend a graveside service Monday, Oct. 21, at 10 a.m. at Juniper Hill Cemetery.

Lillian M. Mello
Resident most of life

Lillian M. (Tafe) Mello, 87, of McGregor, Texas, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at Providence Health Center in Waco, Texas. She was the wife of the late Manuel Mello.

Born in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late James and Annie (Bird) Tafe. She was a quality control inspector at American Tourister before retiring in 1976.

She was a Bristol resident for most of her life, moving to Texas in 1991 with her son Joseph and daughter-in-law Reta.

She leaves two sons, Joseph Mello of Nolanville, Texas, and James L. Mello of Bristol; two daughters, Joan A. Polson of Sandy, Utah, and Kathleen A. Mendes of Danville, Vt.; a sister, Kathleen Annarummo of Swansea; ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was also the sister of the late Fred, Joseph, James and John Tafe, Evelyn Silva and Mildred Botello.

Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, from the Wilbur Romano Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Thomas the Apostle in Warren. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery in Fall River.

Raymond J. Walsh Sr.
Sports enthusiast, Korean War veteran

Raymond J. Walsh Sr., 68, of Riverside, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. (Heywood) Walsh.

Born in Lincoln, he was a son of the late Hugh J. and Esther C. (Goodwin) Walsh.

Mr. Walsh was the supervisor of the produce department for the former Almac’s Supermarket for 27 years before retiring in 1996.

A sports enthusiast, he coached the Riverside Raiders and East Providence Mohawks football teams for 25 years.

He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. Mr. Walsh enjoyed traveling.

He leaves a daughter, Nancy A. Walsh, of Riverside; two sons, David W. Walsh of Rumford and Raymond J. Walsh Jr. of East Providence; two brothers, John "Red" Walsh of Warwick and Dennis P. Walsh of Jamestown; three sisters, Alice Ferrands of Coventry, Conn., Margaret Kent of Providence and Esther Lane of Central Falls; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 11, from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home in Riverside with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Jean the Baptist Church in Warren. Burial followed in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.

Contributions in Mr. Walsh’s memory may be made to The American Cancer Society, 400 Main Street, Pawtucket, RI, 02860.

Ruth Poses
Born in Russia

Ruth Poses, 92, of Sakonnet Bay Manor in Tiverton, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002 at the manor. She was the wife of the late Abraham L. Poses.

Born in Russia, a daughter of the late Sylvia Gimber, she had lived most of her life in Brooklyn, N.Y., before moving to Tiverton.

She was a member of B’nai B’rith, a volunteer at Planned Parenthood and a former board member of its New York chapter.

She leaves a son, Dr. Roy Poses of Barrington; a sister, Miriam Lish of Stanford, Conn.; and a grandson.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Lincoln Park Cemetery in Warwick.

Leonora H. Miniati
Leaves a son in Barrington

Leonora H. Miniati, 96, of Tampa, Fla. and formerly of Narragansett, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002 at Kindred Central in Tampa. She was the wife of the late Peter J. Miniati Sr.

Born in Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Mary (Giusti) Giusti.

Mrs. Miniati worked as a stenographer for the former Blackstone Valley Gas and Electric Co. for many years. She also worked for Atlantic Richfield.

She leaves two sons, Peter J. Miniati Jr. of Barrington and Laurence Miniati of Tampa; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Willard, Stephen and Vera Giusti, and Violet Brunelli.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 12, from the Manning-Heffern Funeral Home in Pawtucket, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Joseph Church, Pawtucket. Burial followed in Mount St. Mary Cemetery in Pawtucket.

George Kurowski
Built planes in World War II

George Kurowski, 91, of Highview Avenue, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of Roma (Mayhew) Kurowski.

Born in Warren, a son of the late Alexander and Josephine (Wisneski) Kurowski, he had lived in Barrington for 30 years, previously living in Buffalo, N.Y.

Mr. Kurowski was a construction supervisor for William Hanley Construction for over 15 years before retiring in 1976.

During World War II, he worked for Curtis-Wright building planes, including those used by the Flying Tigers.

He was an antiques collector, restorer and merchant for more than 26 years.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Kevin Kurowski of Barrington. He was the brother of the late Walter, Stanley and Thadeaus Kurowski, and Sophie Crawley.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Friday, Oct. 11, in St. Jean Baptiste Church, Main Street, Warren. Burial followd in the St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery.

Barbara Silva
Leaves brother in Warren

Barbara Silva, 60, of Homestead Street, Somerset, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at home. She was the wife of Jose Machado Silva.

A lifelong Somerset resident, she was the daughter of Mary (Arruda) Costa of Somerset and the late John Costa Sr.

Mrs. Silva was a medical-records coder at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River.

She was a parishioner of St. John of God Church in Somerset and was past president of its Women’s Guild. She was a member of the church’s Holy Rosary Sodality.

A graduate of Somerset High School, she had attended Bryant College. Mrs. Silva was active in the Somerset Friends of Music.

Besides her husband and mother, she leaves two daughters, Maria Marcucilli and Sylvia Silva, both of Somerset; a brother, John Costa of Warren; and one grandson. She was the sister of the late Matilda Costa.

Her funeral was on Monday, Oct. 14, from Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, Fall River, followed by a funeral Mass in St. John of God Church. She was buried in Nathan Slade Cemetery.

John DeCosta
Longtime foreman at Notre Dame Cemetery

John DeCosta, 61, of 3225 East Main Road, Portsmouth, formerly of Fall River, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at St. Anne’s Hospital, Fall River.

Born in Fall River, a son of the late John DeCosta and Rose (Vieira) Leduc, he had lived in Fall River most of his life.

Mr. DeCosta had been a foreman at Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River, for 28 years.

He leaves two sons, David and Mark DeCosta, both of Fall River; a daughter, Beverly DeCosta of Fall River; three brothers, Kenneth DeCosta and Richard DeCosta Pacheco, both of Fall River, and Peter J. DeCosta of London, England; two sisters, Rita Ray of Sibley, La., and Barbara DeCosta Gaboriau of Fall River; and eight grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Arlene Nunnelly.

His funeral as held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Oliveira Funeral Home, Fall River. Burial was private.

Frank R. Perry
Worked at Kaiser Aluminum, Warren resident for 20 years

Frank R. Perry, 94, of the Grace Barker Nursing Center, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at the center. He was the husband of the late Ruth Irene (Oliver) Perry.

Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Jacinto and Mary Rose (Bernardo) Perry. He lived in Warren for 20 years, previously residing in Bristol.

Mr. Perry worked for Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Company in Bristol for 35 years as a banbery operator, retiring in 1971. He was also a self-employed sign painter for many years, working in Newport, Bristol and New York.

He was a member of the Masons and the Bristol Train of Artillery.

He leaves two daughters, Diana Just of Bristol and Janet Dow of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren and a great-grandson.

His funeral was on Monday, Nov. 4, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, followed by a funeral service at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Warren. Burial was private.

Mary J. Staab
Lived in town for 24 years

Mary J. Staab, 65, of New Meadow Road, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at home. She was the wife of the late Ronald Staab.

Born in Manhattan, N.Y., a daughter of the late James and Christina (Kakoulas) Gabriel, she had lived in Barrington since 1978.

Mrs. Staab was a secretary in the fine arts department at Roger Williams University.

She leaves five sons, Ronald J. Staab of Gainsville, Fla., Paul C. and Douglas G. Staab, both of Cornelius, N.C., Michael D. Staab of Warren and Matthew G. Staab of La Costa, Calif.; two sisters, Anne McGlade of Eugene, Ore. and Alice Hollingsworth of Lancaster, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in St. Luke’s Church, Washington Road. Burial will follow in the North Burial Ground in Bristol.
