Jewell M. Ellerby
Jewell Mallett Ellerby, widow of Mitchell Ellerby, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born January 10, 1923, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Ambrose Tucker and Gracie Lucas Mallett. She was a graduate of S.C. State College. She was an active member of Providence AME Church. She taught in the public schools of Williamsburg and Clarendon counties prior to her retirement. She was past worthy matron of New Light Chapter NO. 254 OES, a member of National Council of Negro Women Inc., Clarendon County Registration Board, Clarendon County Democratic Party and Manning branch of the NAACP.

Survivors include a son, Mitchell Ellerby of Manning and his wife Sarah Ellerby of Moss Point, Miss.; a daughter-in-law, Sallie Ellerby of Hartsville; a brother, Ulysees Mallett and his wife, Anne S. Mallett, of Dillon; a sister, Willie Elizabeth Conyers of Manning; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, the Rev. Walter Ellerby; a grandson; six brothers; and five sisters.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Providence AME Church in Manning with Dr. Bernice Colclough and the Rev. Rufus Gaymon officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Moses Dukes
Sumter - Moses Dukes Sr., 89, widow of Laura Gilliard Dukes, died Thursday, August 22, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 3, 1913, in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Bungalo Dukes Sr. and Roxzina Bradshaw Dukes.

Survivors include four sons, Moses Dukes Jr., Burnie Dukes and Edward Dukes of Sumter, and Albert Dukes of Elizabeth, N.J.; five daughters, Ella Robinson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Naomi Sterling and Laura Dominique, of Spring Valley, N.Y., Dr. Maxine Addison of Columbia and Beverly Dukes of Sumter; a brother, Julius Dukes of Manning; a sister, Cynthia Dukes; 39 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, James Dukes and Melvin Dukes; a granddaughter, Kamiko L. Dukes; two sisters, Reatha D. Robinson and Carrie Daniels; and two brothers, Bungalo Dukes Jr. and Wallace Dukes.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty officiating, assisted by the Revs. Dr. H.B. Shaw and Kenneth Geathers.

Bessie Carter
Florence - Bessie Carter, 92, died Wednesday, August 21, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born October 21, 1910, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Maggie Wilson Carter. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ in her life and became a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton. She moved to Florence in the early 1950s and became a member of Majority Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Carter and his wife, Neomia, Hazel Carter, William Carter and his wife, Olivia, of Baltimore, Md., and Reginald Carter and his wife, Ollie, of Florence; a daughter, Maggie Briscoe of the home; a brother, Deacon John E. Carter of Summerton; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, four brothers and four sisters.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Majority Baptist Church, 414 N. Coit St., Florence.

Burial followed at 11 a.m. Monday in Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Summerton.

Marjorie Michael O. Burke
Marjorie Michael O’Hara Burke, 77, widow of William Lewis Burke, died Friday, August 23, 2002, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born January 14, 1925, in Winston-Salem, N.C. she was the daughter of the late Michael and Hessie Frierson O’Hara. She was a graduate of North Greenville Junior College, and a former schoolteacher, owner and property manager. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and Palmetto Singles Dance Club of Sumter; Pee Dee Singles Dance Club in Florence and a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu.

Survivors include a son, Reid Burke and wife, Sophie, of Sumter; a daughter, Wilma Burke Mitchum of Barnwell; and three granddaughters, Ashleigh Michael Burke, Bonnie Burke Goldsmith and Anne Marie Goldsmith.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Edmond Burke.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu, with the Rev. Dan Helvey officiating.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church, P.O. Box 307, Alcolu, S.C. 29001.

Heyward Baker
Sumter - Heyward Baker, 80, widower of Blanche Rogers Baker, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at a local nursing center. Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Charles Hamilton Baker and Cora Lee Hamilton Baker. He was a member of the First Church of God on Wise Drive and retired from Williams Furniture Co.

Survivors include a daughter, Loretta Puglia of Sumter; two sisters, Virginia Truett and Myrtle Holladay, of Sumter; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert Baker, Gene Baker, Neal Baker, and Charles Baker; and a sister Minnie Baker.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Church of God on Wise Drive with the Rev. Ron Bower officiating.

Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.

C.W. Truett, Jody Truett, Charles Holladay, Danny Holladay, Jerry Holladay and Marty Horne served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the First Chruch of God, 318 N. Wise Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

David W. Jenkinson
David Wayne Jenkinson, 38, died Monday, August 13, 2001, in Johns Island.

Born May 16, 1963, he was the son of John William and Vonise “Teenie” Floyd Jenkinson. He was employed with the City of Charleston Water Department, attended Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church in Pinewood and was a former member of the Marine Corp Reserves.

Survivors besides his parents of Pinewood include a special friend, Cindy Smith of North Charleston; a son, Lance Jenkinson of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Laura Jenkinson of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers, Bill Jenkinson and Eddie Jenkinson of Pinewood; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Ray Barfield and Bennie Barwick officiating.

Burial followed in Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Alcolu Church of God of Prophecy.

Annie L. Moore Webster
Sumter - Annie Lillian Moore Webster, 70, widow of Richard Guy Webster Sr., died Thursday, August 15, 2002, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, N.C.

Born February 23, 1932, in Sumter she was the daughter of the late Thomas Arthur Moore and the late Carrie Elizabeth Riles Moore. She was a Bingo Promoter in Sumter, and a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church.

Surviving are three sons, Dicky Webster and Ricky Webster of Manning, and Jerry Webster of Sacramento, Calif.; two daughters, Candy Duke of Manning and Marie Lloyd of Sumter; two sisters, Betty Young of Sumter and Barbara Brady of Goldsboro, N.C.; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home. The Rev. Mike Murdoch officiated.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Grace Christian Fellowship Church, P.O. Box 95, Manning.

Herman Lindon Rainey Sr.
Herman Lindon Rainey Sr., 64, husband of Mary Ann Bradham Rainey, died Tuesday, August 13 2002, at his home in Manning.

Born October 7, 1937, in Winder, Ga., he was the son of the late Roy and Iva Belle Little Rainey. He was a landscaper, an Air Force veteran, a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, and attended Grace Christian Fellowship Church.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are two sons, Herman Lindon “Lin” Rainey Jr. and Paul “P.J.” Ward Jr. of Manning; three daughters, Donna Jackson of Greenwood, Ramona Burrows of Kingstree, and Paula Barwick of Manning; a brother, Clifford Rainey of Warner Robbins, Ga.; a sister, Mary Moulder of Hoschton, Ga.; and 11 grandchildren.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Friday in Grace Christian Fellowship Church with the Revs. Mike Murdoch and Allen McWhite officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Martha F. Pompey
Columbia - Martha Fowler Pompey, 89, widow of Chester L. Pompey Sr., died Friday, August 9, 2002, at Heartland Rehabilitation Medical Center in West Columbia.

Born December 20, 1912, in Johnson County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Fowler and Alva Stewart Fowler. She attended Johnson County public schools and joined Green Hill AME Church. She later joined Shiloh AME Church, where she served on the Missionary Society and as mother of the church.

Survivors include as son, Wilbert Pompey of Benson, N.C.; three daughters, Julius Pierce and her husband, Audus, of Doversplane, N.Y., Dorothy Pompey and her husband, David, of Columbia and Venessa Neely and her husband, Mike, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four sisters, Pauline Vinson of Clayton, N.C., Swansey Saunders of Smithfield, Va., Lizzie Gilley of Raleigh, N.C., and Mae Grove of Florida; 38 grandchildren; 80 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Chester L. Pompey Jr.; and three daughters, Leola Turner, Cleola Ford and Alma Moore.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. R.L. Brown officiating, assisted by Bishop S.T. Greene, Elder Tommie Wright and the Rev. Derrick D. Kelly.

Burial followed in Junkie Yard Cemetery, Foreston, Manning.

Ola Jamison-Minter
Ola Jean Jamison-Minter, 54, wife of James Minter, died Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Oct. 7, 1947, in Manning, she was the daughter of James Plowden Sr. and Easter Mae Servance Plowden. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Wings of Praise Church in Sumter.

Survivors besides her husband include a son, Michael Jamison of Bronx, N.Y.; a daughter, Doris Jamison-DeMunn and her husband, Vincent, of Sumter; three brothers, Leon McDuffie and his wife, Kate of Sumter, James Plowden Jr. and his wife, Rosa Mae, and Enozie “Vic” Plowden and his wife, Sandra of Sumter; two sisters, Odessa Dennison and her husband, Willie, of Queens, N.Y., and Easter Mae Bell and her husband, Albert, of Stratford; and a grandchild.

Services were held on Monday, August 19, 2002, at Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home, Manning, with the Robert Cribb, pastor, Julius Ragin, pastor, and H. Albert Sims, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in St. Matthews Cemetery.
