Willie M. Richburg
Sumter - Willie Mae Richburg, 89, widow of Henry Richburg, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002, at Mariner Healthcare West.

Born May 8, 1913, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Hampton and Amanda Hilton Martin.

She attended schools in South Carolina. At an early age, she joined Liberty Hill AME Church, where she served as a faithful member for many years. She later joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she attended for more than 50 years until her illness. In her later years, she was a resident of Mariner Healthcare. She worked as a cook in the Day Care Center at Jehovah Baptist Church and was a co-owner of Richburg’s Grocery for more than 40 years.

Survivors include a son, Nathaniel Richburg of Decatur, Ga.; three daughters, Margaree Walker of Newark, N.J., Suester Johnson of Sumter and Mary R. Evono of Bowie, Md.; a brother, Abraham Martin of Baltimore; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, George Walker; and a daughter-in-law, Ingrid Richburg.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by Pastor Ricky S. Simmons, the Rev. E. Palmer, the Rev. Larry Weston and the Rev. Irene Anthony.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Geneva C. Simon
Greeleyville - Geveva Carter Simon, 74, widow of Lee Ernest Simon, died Monday, November 25, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Jan. 15, 1928, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Carter and Carrie Cantey Carter. She was educated at the Santee-Rosenwad School. At an early age, she joined Pine Grove AME Church, where she served on the missionary society.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry L. Simon and his wife, Judy, of Sumter, Joseph Simon and his wife, Sandra, of Greeleyville and Alexander Simon and his wife, Mary, of Foreston; three daughters, Gloria Simon of the home, Beverly Cochran and her husband, Ronald, of Greeleyville and Christine Simon of the home; a grandson she raised as her own, Tyrone Simon of the home; three nieces she raised as her own, Christine Stenson of Elmont, N.Y., Evelyn Conyers of Sumter and Rosalie Cantey of Georgia; a nephew she raised as her own, Casper Simon of Manning; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Pine Grove AME Church in Greeleyville with the Rev. Francis Gathers, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Sam Miller, Leroy Green and Geraldine Houston.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Carol S. Thames
Carol Suzanne Starnes Thames, 32, of 1088 Edisto Drive, Summerton, wife of Marion Thames, died Monday, November 25, 2002, in a Columbia hospital from injuries suffered in a horse riding accident.

Born in Lancaster County, she was a daughter of Carol Gooch Hills and the late Robert L. Starnes Jr. She attended Clarendon Hall and Santee Christian School. She was a member of Lake Marion Christian Fellowship.

Survivors besides her husband of the home and her mother of Holly Hill include two daughters, Melody McDonald of Rochester, N.Y., and Lori Elliott of Eutawville; a brother, Robert Starnes of Summerton; maternal grandmother, Hettie T. Gooch of Summerton; and paternal grandmother, Evelyn Starnes of Lancaster.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Avinger Funeral Home of Holly Hill with the Revs. Terry Poston and Harold Martin officiating.

Burial followed in the Gooch family cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Wilson’s Disease Foundation, 4 Navaho Drive, Brookfield, Ct. 06804.

Geneva H. Brock
Pinewood - Geneva Hankins Brock, 83, widow of Willie Brock, died Thursday, December 12, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 15, 1919, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Jimmy Weeks and Ethel Hankins. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth she joined Zion Hill Baptist Church. Upon moving to Philadelphia, she joined Miracle Revival Deliverance Church, where she served as a missionary and a member of the prayer band. She later joined Pentacol Deliverance Tabernacle Church, where she was a missionary and on the mother’s band. After moving back to Pinewood, she joined Macedonia FBH Church, where she served on the mother board until her health failed.

Survivors include a son, Jimmy Brock and his wife, Chris, of Levittown, Pa.; five daughters, Tiney Terry, Patricia Brock and Geneva Parnell and her husband, Johnny, of Philadelphia, Jennie Staton and her husband, Toney, of Willingboro, N.J., and Geraldine Anderson and her husband, John, of Pinewood; a sister, Lillie Mae Robinson and her husband, Eugene, of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; 36 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six children.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Macedonia FBH Church with the Rev. Annie L. Riley, pastor, officiating, assisted by Pastor Cokley Richburg, evangelist Sarah Miller, and the Rev. Toney Station.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Ann S. Baxley
Lugoff - Ann Stellato Baxley, 76, widow of Dexter F. Baxley, died Monday, December 16, 2002, in Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia.

Born March 1, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Dommonic and Minnie Nanarai Stellato. She was a restauranteur and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Health in Camden.

Survivors include two sons, Joey Baxley of Summerton and Tim Baxley of Shaw Air Force Base; a stepson, Edward Baxley of Camden; a daughter, Teheresa A. “Mindy” Barrineau of Lugoff; two sisters, Helen Altman of Burbank, Calif. and Kathy Sherrill of Camden; a brother, Tony Stellato of Columbia; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at noon Thursday in Our Lady of Perpetual Health in Camden with Father James M. Crowley officiating.

Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Camden.

Pallbearers included Sam Hight, Darrell Brannon, David Watkins, Paul Lown, Chris Robinson and Jason Baxley.

James A. Taylor Jr.
James Andrew “Drew” Taylor Jr., 28, died Saturday, December 14, 2002 in Manning.

Born June 3, 1974, in Sumter, he was the son of James Andrew Taylor Sr. and Mary King Taylor. He was a 1992 graduate of Laurence Manning Academy, a graduate of USC with a degree in Biology, and a member of the Kappa Alpha Order of S.C. He was in pharmaceutical sales and a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides his parents of Manning are a brother, Joseph Leffel “Jody” Taylor and his wife, Amanda, of Manning; and paternal grandparents, Hubert Leffel and Esther Ridgeway Taylor of Alcolu; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Dr. Joe Henry King and Ruth Jones King, and a paternal uncle, Hubert Leffel “Fet” Taylor Jr.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Debra Quilling and the Rev. Dr. James Carl Adams officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

Pallbearers included Paul Newman Jr., Badge Baker, Kerry Brewer, Ben Jordan, Jamie Hodge and Chad McClary.

Hattie C. McFadden
Hattie McCants Cooper McFadden, 94, widow of both John Fleet Cooper and Paul McFadden, died Saturday, December 7, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born April 30, 1908, in Gable, she was the daughter of the late Richard McCants and Elmer White McCants. She attended the Melina Parochial School in Sardinia. In her youth she joined Melina Presbyterian Church, where she later served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the St. Marys Chapter of the Eastern Star No. 156 and the Heroines of Jerico No. 12.

Survivors include four sons, Willie McCants of Alcolu, Otis Cooper and his wife, Betty, of Washington, D.C., Douglas Cooper of Bronx, N.Y., and Thomas Cooper and his wife, Eva, of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two daughters, Johnnie Mae Benbow and her husband, James, of Manning and Mary Lee and her husband, Wilbur, of Bronx, N.Y.; a granddaughter she raised as her own, Jana M. Murray of Wilson; a foster daughter, Margie Jones and her husband, Wayne, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters, Erie Rose and Marie McCants of Gable, and Dorothy McCants and Manning; 39 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sons, Jerimiah, Napoleon, Luther and Oliver Cooper.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Melina Presbyterian Church USA in Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Golden Gate Lodge No. 78 served as pallbearers.

St. Marys Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 156 and heroines of Jerico No. 12 will serve as floral bearers.

Kay F. Landry
Kay R. Fromey Landry, 65, wife of William Joseph Landry, died Thursday, December 12, 2002.

Born in Canastota, N.Y., she was the daughter of Violet Eckerlin Bicknell and the late Paul K. Bicknell Sr. She was formerly of East Syracuse, N.Y. After retirement, she and her husband resided in Summerton, for the past three years.

Survivors besides her husband of Summerton and mother of Easley included three sons, William J. Landry Sr. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Robert Gregory Landry and Joseph Michael Landry of Syracuse, N.Y.; a daughter, Teresa Wright of Syracuse; grandchildren, William Jay Landry Jr., Buddy Landry, Melissa Kay Wright, Emma Corrine Wright, Jennifer Clark Landry, Joseph Michael Landry Jr., Michael Thomas Landry and Brittany Landry; a brother, Paul K. Bicknell of Easley; and a sister, Carole Anderalli of East Syracuse, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, James E. Landry and mother-in-law, Corrine M. Landry.

Memorial mass will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton and at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in East Syracuse at a later date.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 1110, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Jeannie B. Guilford
Baltimore - Jeannie Mae Ballard Guilford, 59, died Monday, December 9, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore.

Born Sept. 8, 1943, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Robert Ballard and Carrie Brunson Ballard. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a former member of Mt. Zion AME Church in Summerton.

Survivors include four sons, Lorenzo Ballard of Remsen, N.Y., Moses Ballard and Michael Williams of Utica, N.Y., and Clifford Williams of Albany, N.Y.; a daughter, Melissa Williams of Asheville, N.C.; two brothers, John Ballard and his wife, Shirley, of Philadelphia and Willie Ballard and his wife, Gene, of Cerro Gordo, N.C.; three sisters, Jane Brown and her husband, Morris, of Wilmington, N.C., Bobbie Lee Gaters of Summerton and Elizabeth Ballard of Winterhaven, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Summerton Funeral Service, 23 S. Duke St., Summerton, with the Rev. Naomi Georgia officiating.

Burial followed in Mt. Zion AME Church Cemetery, Davis Station, Summerton.
