Willie N. Campbell
Willie Alverna Nelson Campbell, 90, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at home, 108 Council St., Sumter.

Born in Clarendon County on Oct. 5, 1912, she was the younger daughter of the late William Canty Nelson and Maggie Slater Nelson.

Educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and Sumter, she was a graduate of Morris College and Benedict College. She received a Master’s of Education degree from New York University of Iowa and Southern Illinois University. Campbell began her career as an educator in Darlington and Marion, later returning to Sumter School District 17, where she remained for more than 30 years.

While working in Darlington she met and married the late Lee Roy Campbell Sr., and they reared seven children, which included theirs and others’.

She was an active member of First Baptist Missionary Church for more than 50 years and worked diligently as a trustee, a member of the missionary society and the finance committee.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Vashti N. Miller; two brothers, Jarrot Earl Nelson Sr. and David Othello Nelson Sr.; and a special nephew, William Canty (W.C.) Nelson.

Survivors include; “The Children” Maggie Nelson Collins (Roger), Patricia Nelson Daniels (Freeman), Lee Roy Campbell Jr. (Beverly), Sarah Nelson Redmond (Charles), Jarrot E. Nelson Jr., Ramona B. Lawson and George W. Lawson Jr.; grandchildren, Craig Collins, Kristen Minton, Kia Daniels, Cicely Collins, Carla Daniels, Reneka Redmond, Brodric Scott, Brandon Campbell, Charles Redmond Jr., Lisa Young, Elise Campbell and Lee Roy Campbell III; great-grandchildren, Jazmine Collins, Madison Minton and Janovia Collins; special nephews, David O. Nelson Jr., Michael and Andre Nelson; nieces, Lottice Johnson, Rosalyn Turner (Roger) and Sheila Perrin (Sidney); loving cousins, Dr. Carriemae G. Marquess and family, and Dr. Gloria Blackwell and family; and a host of sorrowing friends and relatives.

Funeral services were Tuesday at First Baptist Missionary Church with the Rev. W.S. Randolph officiating. Interment was in Walker Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 7163, Sumter, SC 29150. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Charles S. Young
Charles Stanley Young Sr., 47, husband of Oletha Evans Young, died Sunday, December 15, 2002, at 1099 Travis Lane.

Born March 28, 1955, in Budds Creek, Md.; he was the son of Mary Louvenia Smith Young and the late Joseph E. Young Sr. He was a graduate of Chopticon High School in Moranza, Md., and the Tailoring School of Baltimore. In his youth he was baptized at Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church in Chopticon, Md.

Survivors besides his wife of the home and mother of Baltimore include five sons, Charles S. Young Jr., Thomas A. Young, Nishon Omar Young, Gaudhi D. Evans and Bryant O. Evans of the home; two daughters, Tricia Young of Glenn Burnie, Md., and Tameika Young of Bladenburg, Md.; two brothers, the Rev. Joseph E. Young Jr. and his wife, Marilyn, of Fort Washington, Md., and James W. Young of Jessup, Md.; and four sisters, Mary E. Young of Greenbelt, Md., Gloria A. Young of Leonardtown, Md., Barbara S. Young of Forestville, Md., and Theresa Lowe and her husband, Barto, of Capital Heights, Md.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clement Alexander Young.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu, with the Rev. Dennis Brock, pastor officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Men of the church served as pallbearers.

Ladies of the church served as floral bearers.

Minnie W. Sheirod
Sumter - Minnie Wright Sheirod, 88, widow of Malachi Sheirod, died Monday, December 16, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 14, 1914, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Johnny and Lizzie Wright. She attended Kendall School. In her youth she attended Reeseville AME Church and later joined Union Station AME Church. She later moved to New York, where she lived until her retirement in the 1970s. After relocating back to South Carolina she rejoined Union Station AME Church, where she was a member of the Sunday school, senior choir, Stewardess Board No. 2, trustee board and the missionary society. In the community, she was a member of the United Order of Tents Lodge and volunteered at Emmanuel United Methodist Church’s Soup Kitchen.

Survivors include a stepson, James Brunson and his wife, Lillian, of Florida; a special friend, Rachel Ruth Davis; and a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son and a number of siblings.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at Union Station AME Church with the Rev. Friendly J. Gadson officiating, assisted by the Revs. William Frierson, Marie Harvin and Sam Spain.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery.

General Ragin
General Ragin Sr., 82, widower of Mittie Bethune Ragin, died Friday, December 13, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 15, 1920, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late John and Minnie Ida Watson Ragin. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth he joined Historical Liberty Hill AME Church. He was a World War II U.S. veteran and employed with Greg’s Gulf Station of Summerton for a number of years.

Survivors include five sons, Ricky Ragin of the home, General Ragin Jr. of Summerton, Hercules Ragin of New York City, Author Lee and Timothy Ragin of Pinewood; seven daughters, Bablee Briggs of the home, Janette Chandler and Joyce Ragin of Summerton, Shebia Hatcher and Linda Ragin of Pinewood, Carolyn Dow of Panola and Ishia Butler of Baltimore; three sisters, Theola Horton of Summerton, Williebell Frierson and Ruby Martin of New York City; 35 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by three children, Ethelee, Ozzie and Thomesina.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Historical Liberty AME Church with the Rev. Malachi Duncan, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Ruth M. Evans
Sumter - Ruth Jeanette “Jean” Morris Evans, 82, widow of David Chandler Evans, died Wednesday, December 18, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Elias Morris and Martha “Mattie” Olive Hodge Morris. She was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church, where she had been active in Golden Moments and the Young-At-Heart as well as chairwoman of the ladies circles. She was a retired ward clerk with Tuomey Regional Medical Center and was later employed by Sumter Developmental Learning Center. She was a former resident of the Presbyterian Home in Florence.

Survivors include a son, DeLeon C. Evans and his wife, Virginia, of Sumter; three brothers, Douglas Morris of Sumter, Ervin Morris of Vance and Cecil Morris of Portland, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta Evans Elliott; a brother, Horace L. Morris Sr.; and a sister, Julia Griffin.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. William Albert officiating.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Concord Presbyterian Church, 3350 E. Brewington Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153 or the Presbyterian Home, 2350 Lucas St., Florence, S.C. 29501.

Guy B. Coker Sr.
Columbia - A homegoing celebration for Mr. Guy Blair Coker Sr., 81, of Columbia, S.C. was held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2003 in East Columbia Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1213 Hazelwood Road, Columbia. Interment followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

The Rev’s Robert G. Ward Sr., J.D. Simmons Sr., and Terry Fowler officiated. Active Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews. Honorary Pallbearers were the Men’s Fellowship of East Columbia Pentecostal Church. The family requests those wishing may make memorial contributions to East Columbia Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1213 Hazelwood Road, Columbia, S.C. 29209.

Mr. Coker entered into eternal rest Monday, December 30, 2002. Born on Sept. 8, 1921, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Samuel D. Coker and Lutitia Morris Coker. Mr. Coker was retired from Ft. Jackson Civil Service as Supervisor of roads and grounds, with 27 years of service. He had worked with the Military Police and then retired from the U.S. National Guard, having served during WWII. He was a member of East Columbia Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served as an Elder, and active in the Men’s Fellowship of the church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rev. Leona R. Coker of Columbia; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Sylvia Coker Dandridge and James Dandridge and Barbara Coker Hinton and Charles Hinton of Hopkins; a son and daughter-in-law, Derrel and Diane Coker of West Columbia; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Jerry Ham of West Columbia and Bobbie and Ronald Goodson of Manning; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Guy Blair Coker Jr., and brothers, Odell Coker, Gene Coker, Carl Coker and Gordon Coker.

Everette Geddings
Sumter - Everette Geddings, 69, husband of Betty Williams Geddings, died Wednesday evening January 1, 2003, at Tuomey Healthcare Systems.

Born December 18, 1933 in Sumter, he was the son on the late Myer and Annie Mae McLeod Geddings. He was retired from the USAF and the State Forestry Commission. He was a member of Sumter Blue Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. He was a member and deacon of Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of Sumter; two sons, E. Ray Geddings and his wife, Cindy, of Alcolu, Bryan L. Geddings and his fiancé, Amy M. Wright, of Portsmouth, Va.; three daughters, Sandra G. Purvis of Sumter, Gail West and her husband, Tommy, of Sumter, and Kathy G. Brewer and her husband, Stanley, of Sumter; two brothers, Ashley Geddings and Myer Geddings of Sumter; nine grandchildren, Heather Baker, Kimberly West, Erica Charles, Anthony R. Geddings, Shawn Geddings, Samantha Brewer, Ryan Brewer, Erin Brewer, Reed Brewer; and three great-grandchildren, Jordan Baker, Payton Charles and Brice Charles.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Annette Geddings and a son, Gary Eugene Geddings, and 10 brothers and sisters.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Dennis Welch and G.W. Harrell officiating.

Burial with full military honors followed in the church cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of Bethel Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Family Life Center Fund, 2401 Bethel Church Road, Sumter, S.C. 29154.

Mary W. Hill
Mary Windham Hill, 86, died Friday, December 20, 2002, in Clarendon Nursing and Rehab in Mt. Pleasant.

Born Dec. 30, 1915, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Mamie Kelly Windham. She was retired bookkeeper for Dr. Clarence E. Coker Jr., and was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Carroll Hill of Fresno, Ca., Edwin C. Hill of Visalia, Ca., Charlie Hill and Johnny Hill of Manning; a daughter, Ann H. Ebert of Charleston; two brothers, Everett Windham of Manning and Harold Windham of Davis Station; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Stephen Bowe officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Alton Holliday
Alton Holliday, 49, husband of Catherine Holliday, died Wednesday, January 1, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 8, 1953, in Manning, he was the son of Sallie Goodman Holliday and the late James Allen Holliday. He was a graduate of Manning Training High School and served in the U.S. Army before receiving an honorable discharge. He was employed with Star-Flo Corp. in Manning.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Lamont Holliday and his wife, Crystal, of Silver Springs, Colo., and Whitney Holliday of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Harmony Salebe and her husband, Paul, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, James Holliday and his wife, Cheryl, of Boston, Mass.; five sisters, Pauline Dunson, Shirley Lloyd, Bobbie Holliday, Lynette Holliday, and Catherine Mack of Boston, Mass.; and six grandchildren.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fleming and Delaine Chapel, Boyce Street, Manning with the Rev. George P. Windley and Minister Leroy McElveen officiating.

Burial followed at Fourth Crossroads Baptist Cemetery.
