Joseph Peter Harrison
Joseph Peter Harrison, 88, of Knightsville, Ind. and Summerton died at Saturday, January 19, 2002, at his home following an extended illness. He moved to Summerton 18 years ago and was a commercial fisherman, selling to many restaurants. He is included in a short story in the book "Fishing Stories I Like to Tell" by local author Charlie Sanders. He was known to his friends as "Indiana Joe" or "Catfish Joe" as he frequently caught 60-70 pound catfish and often had a boat full of fish.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years Dorothy, also known as Mrs. Dot, and nine children.

Services were held Thursday, in Brazil, Ind.

Dorris A. Watts Welch
Sumter - Dorris Aletha Watts Welch, 86, of 374 Timmons Street and widow of Jessie J. Welch, died Saturday, January 25, 2003, in Tuomey Hospital.

Born Nov. 19, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Julius and Rulius Dukes Watts. She was a member of Pine Grove Methodist Church in Turbeville.

Survivors include two daughters, Emmie Lou Singletary of Sumter and Mary Lee Morris of Bishopville; three sons, James L. “Jimmy” Welch of Manning, Jessie James Welch Jr. and Lloyd Welch of Sumter; five sisters, Julia Warren of Sumter, Evelyn Wilkerson of Georgia, Virginia Coker of Turbeville, Christine Kirkman of Walterboro and Margaret Spigner of Alcolu; a brother, J.C. Watts of Turbeville; 12 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Don Welch; two sisters, Ollie Mae Jones and Louise Watts; two brothers, Wofford and Richard Watts; and stepmother, Mary Harrington Watts.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Pine Dale Cemetery in Turbeville with the Rev. Pressley Morris officiating. Pallbearers were Phillip Rogers, Charles Edward Morris Jr., Mark Brown, Johnny Brown, Billy Morris and Will Morris.

Isaac Levy Jr.
Isaac “Ike” Levy Jr., 83, widower of Inez Pearson Levy, died Saturday, January 18, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 23, 1919, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Edmond Levy and Hattie Frazier Levy. He received his formal education at Society Hill Community School, Santee-Rosenwald School and graduated from Manning Training School, receiving a certificate in carpentry and brick masonry. At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined Society Hill AME Church. After reaching manhood, he transferred his membership to Mt. Zion AME Church. He served on the trustee board. He was a professional carpenter and brick mason.

Survivors include three sons, Johnny (Barbara) Levy, Charles (Yolanda) Levy and Edmond (Bert Williams) Levy of Manning; three daughters, Hattie (John Allen) Stukes of Sumter, Barbara Jean (David) Miller of Hillside, N.J., and Jacqueline (Kevin) Johnson of Athens, Ga.; three brothers, Collin Mack of Buffalo, N.Y., Alvin (Ruby) Mack of Tampa, Fla., and George Mack of Buffalo, N.Y.; four sisters, Roberta (Jonathan) Prince of Manning, Vernell (Charles) Ross, Evelyn (Charles) Johnson and Nadine Waiters of Buffalo, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two children.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Historical Mt. Zion AME Church, H.W. Rickenbaker Rd., Summerton, with the Rev. Manuel Fogle, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Sam Miller, Larry Weston, Ricky Simmons and O’Donald Dingle.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Sadie C. King
Sadie Dupree Conyers King, 87, widow of Frank Conyers Jr. and Russell King, died Monday, January 20, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born July 28, 1915, in the Biggers section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late George Dupree and Annie Brogdon Dupree and stepdaughter of the late Amerintha McFadden Dupree. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She joined Biggers AME Church at an early age. She moved to New York, where she served at Victory Baptist Church.

After retiring she returned home and rejoined Biggers AME Church, where she served on the missionary and stewardess boards. She was a retired employee at Albert Einstein Baptist Hospital, Bronx, N.Y.

Survivors include a son, Frank Conyers Jr. of Hackensack, N.J.; a grandson she reared as her own, Curtis Davis of Hartsville; a sister, Cora Williams of Gloversville, N.Y,; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Weldon, Maceo, David and James Dupree; and a sister, Easter Mae Rodgers.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Biggers AME Church, Kingstree Hwy. 261, with the Rev. Andrew Jordan officiating.

Burial followed in Muldrow Cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Nieces served as floral bearers.

Mary Elizabeth H. Johnson
Mary Elizabeth Hightower Johnson, 75, widow of Kermit Johnson, died Tuesday, January 21, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 9, 1927, in Denmark, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Corie Collins Hightower. She was retired from Sky City in Denmark, and was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Ken Johnson of Manning; a sister, Eloise Hightower of Manning; and a grandson, Ken Johnson Jr.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Manning First Baptist Church with the Revs. Sim Smith and Danny Bridges officiating.

Burial followed at Ghents Branch Baptist Church Cemetery near Denmark.

Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church Music Fund, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, S.C. 29102.

Norma G. Green
Sumter - Norma “Billie” H. Green, 82, died January 26, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late James Henry Hodge and Maggie Barwick Hodge. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church since 1939 and was membership secretary for many years. She was very creative, loved to paint and enjoyed flowers and nature.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Francis Dennis of Florence; three sons, Donnie “Don” and Carolyn Green of Sumter, Wayne and Brenda Green of Lynchburg, and Jack and Mic Green of Turbeville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alvin “Bo” V. Green; and a son-in-law, Freddy Dennis.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta.

Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 308, Lynchburg, S.C. 29080.

Hayward W. Rhodes
Hayward W. Rhodes, 83, husband of Leola Johnson Rhodes, died Friday, February 6, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Medical Center in Columbia.

Born July 1, 1919, in the Gable section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Martin Rhodes and Amy Bines Rhodes. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He joined Melina Presbyterian Church, USA, and served as an elder for many years. A member of the NAACP Manning branch, he was self-employed as a farmer his whole life, retiring in 1987.

Survivors other than his wife include a son, Hayward E. (Patricia Eady) Rhodes Sr. of the home; a daughter, Haretha L. (Rev. Dr. Johnny L.) Ceasar of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Martha McFadden of Miami, Elizabeth Johnson of Bronx, N.Y., and Rosa Lee Cratch of Rembert; and four grandchildren, Lakeisha D. Rhodes, Hayward E. Rhodes Jr. and Cassandra Rhodes of the home, and Trevor T. Ceasar of Brooklyn.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Elex, Johnny and Sidney Rhodes; and two sisters, Emma Boyd and Rebecca Jenkins.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Melina Presbyterian Church, USA, in Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Johnny L. Ceasar.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mary C. Frazier
Mary Cooper Frazier, 85, widow of Peter Frazier Sr., died February 4, 2003, at her residence.

Born Oct. 8, 1917, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Pearlie Cooper and Wanna Bradshaw Cooper. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Philadelphia, Pa., and Camden, N.J. She was a member of Society Hill AME Church and served as a member of the stewardess board, missionary society and Sunday school.

Survivors include a son, Leo Waudell (Brenda) Frazier of Warner Robins, Ga.; five stepsons, Richard Frazier, Leroy (Helen) Frazier and Mack Frazier of Buffalo, N.Y., Theodore Frazier of Manning and Eddie (Ruby) Frazier of Capital Heights, Md,; five daughters, Maudie L. (Curtis) Brooks, Shirley (Freddie) Kenner, Louisa (Charles) Merritt of Buffalo, N.Y., Mable (Andrew) Dukes of Philadelphia, Pa., and Juanita (Jonathan) Scott of Alcolu; a sister, Annie C. Levy of Buffalo, N.Y.; 40 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Peter Frazier Jr.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Society Hill AME Church, Jordan community, with the Revs. Leon Terry, Darrell Frazier, O’Donald Dingle, Leroy Green and Minister Shirley Waiters officiating.

Burial followed in Society Hill AME Church cemetery.

Eliza Williams
COLUMBIA -- Eliza Williams, 90, widow of Ernest A. Williams, died Tuesday, January 22, 2002, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.

Born June 6, 1911, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Harriet Bethune Gardner. She attended Bracey School in Privateer and was a faithful member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church for more than 60 years. She retired from Sumter School District 17.

Survivors include three sons, Johnny Williams of Columbia and Curtis and Leroy Williams of Charleston; two daughters, Earnestine Sims of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mary Williams of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Bertha Bynum of Sumter; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers, Walter, Willis, Stephen, David, Joe, James, Sydney and Charlie; and three sisters, Lizzie, Sally and Hattie.

Services were 3:30 p.m. at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Marion H. Newton, pastor, Clyde J. Corbin and Larry Weston officiating.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Mary B. Poole
Mary Elizabeth Bryant Poole, 75, widow of Charles Travis Poole, died Monday, January 28, 2002, at Summerville Medical Center.

Born June 21, 1926, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late George and Beulah Carraway Bryant. She was a lifelong member of Home Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, George T. Poole of Summerville; a daughter, Annette Gish of Shelbyville, Ky.; a sister, Dorothy Jauncey of San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Beulah Aline Geddings.

Services were 10 a.m. Wednesday at Home Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hall officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Midstate S.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202-7044.
