Richard T. Imboden II
Richard Thomas “Butch” Imboden II, 53, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at his residence.

Born Aug. 3, 1948, in Camp Pendleton, Calif., he was the son of the late Richard T. Imboden I and Esther Mae Smith Imboden Kisner. He was a former policeman in Manning and was employed with Wal-Mart in Orangeburg.

Survivors include a daughter, Michelle Lynn Imboden Plowden of Alcolu; a son, Richard Thomas Imboden III of Lancaster; four brothers, Thomas Imboden of Quakerstown, Pa., Robert Imboden of Phillipsburg, N.J., Dennis Imboden of Bangor, Pa. and James Imboden of Easton, Pa.; six grandchildren, Ryan and Sarah White, Geoffrey Gurney, Samantha Plowden, and Hannah and Samuel Jackson.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Bowe officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, South Carolina Office, P.O. Box, 23128, Columbia, S.C. 29224-3128.

Joe Avant Jr.
Joe “Bug” Avant Jr., 55, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Aug. 31, 1947, in the Lanes section of Williamsburg County, he was the son of the late Joe Avant Sr. and Elizabeth Harris Avant. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County at Alcolu Elementary School, and he was a graduate of the Manning Training School Class of 1968. In his youth, he joined Greenhill Baptist Church under the pastorage of the Rev. Vandroth Baccus.

Survivors include a daughter, Jessica N. Aiken of Manning; two brothers, Lonnie (Josephine) Avant of Manning and Willie Avant of San Diego; and four sisters, Shirley (Jesse) Lewis, Carrie (David) McDonald, Sadie Williams and Alice (Jackie) Way of Manning.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Friday at Greenhill Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. James S. Hudley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. W.J. Frierson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Men of the church and friends of the family served as pallbearers.

Ladies of the church and friends of the family served as flower bearers.

Alice F. Durant
Alice Faye “Coote” Durant, 55, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Dec. 26, 1947, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Jenkins Lang and Lillie Rhames Lang. She attended Scott’s Branch High School. She was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church.

Survivors include a brother, Levi Lang of Summerton; three sisters, Carrie Lue (Ernest) James of Bronx, N.Y., and Deloris Lang and Julia Ann (Carlos) Lang of Summerton; two grandchildren; and one aunt, Malvenia Rhames of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Queen Lang.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Baptist Church, Silver community, with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were the friends of the family.

Floral bearers were the friends of the family.

Willie L. McKenzie Jr.
Florence - Willie “Mutt” Louis McKenzie Jr., 68, husband of Martha Mae Gamble McKenzie, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Carolina Hospital System in Florence.

Born Dec. 24, 1934, in the Barrineau section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Willie McKenzie Sr. and Charlotte Pearl McFadden McKenzie. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he accepted Christ and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church, attending until his health failed.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Willie Louis McKenzie III of Lake City; two daughters, Mary Ann McFadden of Olanta and Betty Jean McKenzie of Baltimore; a brother, Isaac Brayboy of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four sisters, Ida Mae Davis of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Lottie Mae Rogers of Lake City, Rebecca Shaw of Patterson, N.J., and Lero McKenzie of Baltimore; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence and John Henry McKenzie and King Davis; and three sisters, Annie L. McKenzie, Dorothy Mae Nelson and Dorothy Bell Powell.

Services were held at noon Friday at St. Mark Believers Holiness Church, Delano St., Lake City, with Presiding Elder Dr. Linwood Cooper, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop O.D. Fulton.

Burial followed in McKenzie-Brown Cemetery.

Friends of the family and men of the church served as pallbearers.

Friends of the family and ladies of the church served as flower bearers.

John E. Rhames
John Ervin Rhames, 57, died at his residence, First Street, Summerton, Tuesday, March 11, 2003.

Born in Summerton, Clarendon County, on Oct. 15, 1945, he was the son of the late Lindberg Rhames and Maybelle Merchant Rhames. He attended Scott’s Branch High School. He was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church. He was formerly employed by the town of Summerton Water Department for 26 years.

Survivors include a devoted companion, Rachel Ragin of Summerton; a son, John Ervin Rhames Jr. of Summerton; one adopted son, Devonce Ragin of Summerton; two adopted daughters, Elizabeth Solomon and Shalonda Ragin of Summerton; two brothers, Willie (Gayle) Rhames of Belle Glade, Fla., and Minister Jacob (Brenda) Rhames of Summerton; five sisters, Annie Faye (Willie) Stukes and Jacquliean (Thedore) Smythe of Summerton, Ernestine Rhames and Helen (Robert) Cage of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Minnie Ruth Rhames of Belle Glade, Fla.; two grandchildren; and one aunt, Malvenia Rhames of Summerton.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Baptist Church, Silver community, with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were the friends of the family.

Floral bearers were the friends of the family.

Elizabeth G. Robertson
Elizabeth Juanita Gause Robertson, 81, widow of John Robertson, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Brian Center in Columbia.

Born Oct. 6, 1921, in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Claude DuRant Gause and the late Valera Dean West Gause. She was first married to the late Francis Edwards, and was a retired restaurant manager, and a member of Santee Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Linda Connor of Columbia and Gladys Metzger of Bradenton, Fla.; a brother, John Gause of Bradenton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Claudine Gause Robertson.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Santee Baptist Church, c/o Rev. Jimmy Eldreth, 1057 Davis Street, Manning, SC 29102.

Helen R. Shuler
Helen Roark Shuler, 77, widow of Ira “Son” Shuler, formerly of Jamestown, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at Regency Hospital in Florence.

Born March 27, 1925, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., she was the daughter of the late George and Emma Roark. She attended Little White Church of Greeleyville.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. Rowland Shuler and wife, Linda, of Bennettsville; a daughter, Emma Ard and husband, Johnny, of Greeleyville; a brother, the Rev. Charles Roark of Camden; four grandsons, David Shuler, Maxie Shuler and wife, Shannon, John Ard and wife, Carey, and Ricky Ard and wife, Dawn; and three great-grandchildren, Briana and Shelby Ard and Aaron Shuler; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Eric Shuler officiating.

Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Greeleyville.

Memorials may be made to Little White Church, Greeleyville.

Clarence Johnson Sr.
Clarence Johnson Sr., 69, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 14, 1932, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Burgess Johnson and Rachel Martin Johnson.

He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked for Cresent-Xcelite Division of Cooper Industries.

Survivors include three sons, Clarence Johnson Jr., Roray Johnson and Sgt. Rochell Johnson of Manning; a daughter, Cherryl Blackwell of Alcolu; three sisters, Rosa Lee Robinson, Mary Gibson and Carolyn Johnson of Baltimore; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Earl Johnson.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning with the Revs. Ashley Vaughn, O’Donald Dingle and Eddie Lesaine officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
