Hattie O. Richardson
Hattie Oliver Richardson, 86, widow of Edward Richardson Sr., died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Einstein Hospital in Philadephia.

Born Oct. 25, 1916, in Paxville, she was the daughter of Edward and Julian James Oliver. She was educated in the public school system of Clarendon County and was a member of Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton.

Survivors include three sons, Edward Richardson Jr. of Buffalo, N.Y., Henry Richardson of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and William Richardson of Philadelphia; one daughter, Anne Nelson of Buffalo; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Friday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan officiating. Burial was in Historic Liberty Hill AME Church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home of Funerals in Dummerton was in charge of arrangements.

Maggie L. DuBose
Maggie Lee DuBose, 62, died Thursday, January 9, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 30, 1940, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Ben and E.D. Haley DuBose. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church.

Survivors include two sons, Harry L. Way Jr. of Manning and Terry Allen Way of Sumter; four daughters, Melissa Evans, Janice Freeman, Melanie Way and Teresa Granger of Manning; a brother, Franklin Hatfield of Manning; a sister, Mary Davis of Manning; and 11 grandchildren.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday in Grace Christian Fellowship Church with the Rev. Mike Murdoch officiating.

Memorials may be made to Grace Christian Fellowship Church, P.O. Box 95, Manning, S.C. 29102

Johnny L. Felder
Johnny Lee “Bo” Felder, 42, died Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at his home, 3249 Brogdon Road.

Born May 14, 1960, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was the son of Troy Dingle Sr. and the late Hattie Pinease Felder. He was reared by his aunt, Hester Felder Way.

He graduated from Manning High School in 1979. He worked on the Thomas Lee farms and in construction. He attended Sunday School and worship services at Antioch Baptist Church in the Jordan community.

Survivors besides his father and his stepmother, Susan, of Manning and his aunt and her husband, Alexander, of Alcolu, include six brothers, Robert Felder Jr. and his wife, Mamie, the Rev. Jerian Dingle and Ronnie Dingle of Manning, Troy Dingle Jr. and his wife, Alice, of Columbia, Jerome Dingle of Fort Hood Texas, and Kenneth Dingle of Germany; five sisters, Annie Simmons and her husband, Willie, of Alcolu, Terry McKenzie and her husband, Eddie, of Turbeville, Catherine Felder and Joan Felder of Sumter, and Elouise Dingle of Manning.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Revs. O’Donald Dingle, Jerial Dingle, and the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg officiating.

Burial followed at Antioch Memorial Garden, Joseph Lemon-Dingle Road, Jordan community of Manning.

Martha Ida Van Laan
Martha Ida “Sue” Hester Van Laan, 78, wife of Roger Warren Van Laan, died Tuesday, January 3, 2003, at the home of her daughter in Virginia Beach, Va.

Born Aug. 12, 1924, in Montgomery County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late James Bert Hester and Tyson Sprye Lowder Hester of the Wilson Community of Clarendon County. She graduated from Manning High School in 1941. After graduation, she received a Civil Service Appointment at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. She was a faithful and active member of New Market Methodist Church in New Market, Md., where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and Volunteer Secretary. While teaching the Sunday School class, she and her class became participants in the Heifer Organization.

Survivors include a son, James Roger Van Laan and wife, Nan, of Landrum, S.C.; a daughter, Virginia Sue “Ginny” Sinclair and husband, Mark, of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers, Lt. Corp. (Retired) James Bert Hester Jr. and wife, Marijohn, of Summerville, S.C. and Robert Charles Hester of Manning; and four grandchildren, Martha, Rebecca, Andrew and Robert Sinclair.

She was preceded in death by an Infant Son.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Frederick, Md. with the Rev. Harold B. Wright II, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial followed in New Market Cemetery.

Jimmy R. Williams
The Rev. Jimmy Roger Williams, 80, of Turbeville, husband of Bertha Mae Harris Williams, died Thursday, January 2, 2003, at his home.

Born in Warrenton, N.C., he was the son of the late Jimmy Patrick Williams and Viola Bell Hunt Williams. He was a retired Pentecostal Holiness minister.

Survivors besides his wife of Turbeville include two daughters, Viola Faye Murdock of Raleigh, N.C., and Rhoda Folmar and her husband, William, of Harrisonburg, Va.; two sons, David Williams and his wife, Anita, of Florence and Paul Thad Williams and his wife, Jan, of Martinez, Ga.; three sisters, Perry Robinson, Peggy Short and Lillian McDade of Henderson, N.C.; a brother, Norman Williams of Henderson; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Williams and Lee Williams.

A private service was held.

Memorials may be made to American Heart Association.

Charles Woods
Charles “Man” Woods, 65, died Tuesday, January 14, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born June 1, 1937, in Olanta, Florence County, he was the son of the late McSwain Woods and Lizzie Brown Woods. He received his formal education at Alcolu Elementary School, Alcolu. At an early age, he joined Jordan Chapel Baptist Church. After moving to Connecticut, he joined Miracle Faith World Outreach, Bridgeport, Conn. He was employed with Averick Furniture until retiring.

Survivors include three stepdaughters, Sandra Walker, Cordelia Wrentz and Windfrey Nash of South Norwalk, Conn.; and a sister and caregiver, Dorothy W. Evins of Alcolu.

Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Dennis Brock, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery, Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu.

Winnie L. Brand
Winnie Lou Brand, 90, widow of Thad Brand, died Saturday, December 28, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born May 24, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Dave and Lula Wilson.

Survivors include three daughters, Commia Lee Honemond of Washington, D.C., Buenia Gray of Bowie, Md., and Lula Mae Rush of Maryland; 29 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; 38 great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-grandchild.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church, Turbeville, with Pastor Shelly Hickson officiating.

Burial followed at Union Hill Cemetery.

Queen Pendergrass
Hopkins - Queen Pendergrass, 84, died Sunday, December 29, 2002, at 1645 Ridge Road.

Born Oct. 22, 1918, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Matthew Pendergrass and Lou Jane Pendergrass. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was employed by the state of New York.

She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Pendergrass; two brothers, Matthew and Cockley Pendergrass; five sisters, Annie L. Canty, Mageline Henderson, Janie Jones, Carrie Pendergrass and Bertha Simon.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Community Funeral Home with the Revs. Leroy T. James and Roosevelt Boyd and Bishop Q.B. Conyers officiating.

Burial followed in New Hope Cemetery.

Willie Witherspoon
Sumter - Willie Witherspoon, 92, husband of Lillie Mae Walters Witherspoon, died Monday, December 30, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 12, 1910, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Ivory and Catherine Witherspoon. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was employed in the Sumter area as a plumber for a number of years. In his youth, he joined Rock Hill Baptist Church, where he served on the board of trustees. In later years, he joined Jehovah Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Ada Witherspoon and her husband, Leroy, and Fannie English and her husband, Henry, of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Sadie Witherspoon of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Willie Witherspoon Jr.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Irene Anthony, Nate Brock and Pastor Leon Winn.

Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery.

Grandsons and great-grandsons served as pallbearers.

Granddaughters and great-granddaughters served as floral bearers.

Hazel T. Fordham
Hazel Thames Fordham, 63, widow of James Paul Fordham, died Thursday, January 17, 2002, at her home.

Born March 5, 1938, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Frank Thames and Ollie Stukes Thames. She attended Clarendon County public schools and in her youth, joined Mount Zero Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member of the Spiritualites choir.

Survivors include four sons, James Fordham of Orangeburg, Levy Fordham and Michael Fordham of Manning and Leroy Fordham of Boston, Mass.; five daughters, Emma Fordham and Mable Fordham of Manning, Margaret Evans of Pinewood, Blanche Gibson of Paxville and Roberta Evans of Brockton, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Gloria Jean Walters of Thomasville, N.C.; four brothers, Rommie Thames, the Rev. Bobby Thames, Sampson Thames and Otis Thames of Boston; five sisters, Clurttie Blanding, Mary Wilson, Odessa Canty and Lillie Mae Gibson of Manning and Margie Thompson of Fall River, Mass.; 35 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Zero Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Presley, pastor, officiating and the Revs. Walt Phillips, Johnny Nelson, Jeremiah Blanding and Bobby Thames assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
