Charles M. Lowder
Columbia - Charles M. Lowder, 83, died Sunday, October 6, 2002.

Born in Manning, he was the son of the late John and Mary Ridgeway Lowder. He was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service retiring after 35 years, a member of College Place Untied Methodist Church and the J.M. Ariail Sunday School Class, a long-time Gamecock supporter and member of the Gamecock Club. He loved to travel with his family. He was a Veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Marine Corp.

Survivors include his wife, Mable Ard Lowder; a daughter, Patricia C. Hartin; a son, Rodney C.. Lowder and his wife, Judy, of Columbia; a brother, Hubert Lowder of Belvedere, S.C.; three sisters, Mary Tallman of Sumter, Maria Stukes and Ruby Stukes of Manning; six grandchildren, Elaine, Ashley and Jamie Hartin and Amy, Troy and Heather Lowder; and two great-grandchildren, Grey and Chuck Hartin.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2002, in College Place United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mr. Wiley B. Cooper officiating.

Burial followed in Bush River Memorial Gardens, with Military Honors.

Pallbearers included Troy and Jack Lowder, Ashley and Jamie Hartin, Bud Haley, John Coutsos and Frankie Schultz.

Harriett E. Ridgeway
North Charleston - Harriett E. Ridgeway, 55, died Thursday, October 10, 2002, at her home in North Charleston.

Born January 11, 1947, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Furman S. and Doris Etheleen Dennis Ridgeway. She was a retired salesperson and a member of New Life Assembly in Charleston.

Survivors include a son, Walter Brian Kirby of Raeford, N.C.; five brothers, Furman J. Ridgeway, James L. Ridgeway, Charlie S. Ridgeway and George A. Ridgeway of Sumter, and Henry A. Ridgeway of Santee; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

A private burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Manning.

Mamie B. Reed
Mamie Lee Baker Reed, 56, wife of Jasper Reed, died Friday, October 4, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 31, 1946, in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Baker and Rosa Bell Hunter Baker. She attended Lee County public schools.

Survivors besides her husband include two godsons, Danny Johntrell Baker and Drayquan Shaw; three brothers, Thomas, Sammy and Calvin Baker; and five sisters, Willie Mae Goggins, Pauline Brisbon, Geraldine Baker, Gean Toney and Dorothy Green.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Herbert Fogle officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers and floral bearers.

Frances D. Mitchum Pillsbury
Frances Diane “Frankie” Mitchum Pillsbury, 44, died Saturday, October 12, 2002, in Manning.

Born October 13, 1957, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late John Eldridge Mitchum and the late Harriett Virginia Broadway Mitchum. She was a member of Trueway Holiness Church.

Survivors include two sons, Bobby Ray Pillsbury of Sumter and James Anthony Pillsbury of Manning; two daughters, Tiffany Pillsbury Cribb of Manning and Virginia Pillsbury Logan of Alcolu; three brothers, Henry F. Mitchum, Don E. Mitchum and John T. Mitchum of Manning; a sister, Jackie DuBose of Manning; six grandchildren, Kevin Cribb, Curtis Cribb, David Logan, Timothy Logan, Breanna McCall and Austin Shapley.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Wesley Mitchum and Ashley Mitchum.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Oak Grove Cemetery with the Revs. William K. Cribb and Stacey Floyd officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Gerald L. McElvogue
Gerald Lee McElvogue, 71, husband of Frankie Hughes McElvogue, died Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital in Florence.

Born April 24, 1931, in Des Moines, Iowa, he was the son of the late Luther and Eve McElvogue. He was retired from the United States Navy, a veteran of the Vietnam War, and was a retired postal worker. Mr. McElvogue was a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church, and was a Mason and Shriner.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are a son, Cliff McElvogue of Goose Creek; a stepson, Mack Brown of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Sandra Gibbons of Kingstree; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Esta G. Gilley officiating.

Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 1891 Oak Grove Church Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

James H. Brown
High Point, N.C. - James Henry “Boy” Brown, 53, died Sunday, October 6, 2002, at Sunbridge of Triad, High Point.

Born March 26, 1949, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Ollie Brown and Isabelle Billie Brown. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was employed by Lexington Furniture International Furniture Co., Lexington.

Survivors include a son, James Henry Moore of Avon, Fla.; a daughter, Lashay Simon of Lexington; three brothers, Charlie Brown and his wife, Linda, and Major Brown of Summerton, and William Brown and his wife, Mary, of Thomasville; three sisters, Margaree Brown, Loretta Turner and her husband, Marcellus, and Thelma Brown of Summerton; and a grandchild.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant RMUE Church, Panola community, Pinewood, with the Rev. Powell Hampton Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by Samuel McLendon Sr., pastor.

Burial followed in Brown Cemetery, Panola community.

Barbara L. Line Strunk
Barbara Louise Line Strunk, 65, wife of Robert Franklyn Strunk, died Sunday, September 29, 2002, in the Southern Alps of Italy.

Born August 21, 1937, in Kansas City, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Claude Clinton Line and the late Dorothy Mac White Line. She was a 1964 graduate of Kansas University with a Masters in Education degree, a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, a retired teacher and retired employee of IBM, and attended the Presbyterian Church in Manning.

Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, Eric Frankln Strunk of Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Leslie Potter of Pittsfield, Mass., and Emilee Ann Gillalin of Dallas, Texas; and four grandchildren, Peter Michael Potter, Elaina Gillalin, Caitlin Strunk and William Franklyn Strunk.

A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, in the Wyboo Community Center, with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, S.C. Office, P.O. Box 23128, Columbia, S.C. 29224-3128, or to The Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning.

Billy G. Harrell
Billy Gray Harrell, 67, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Oct. 5, 1935, in Bertie County, N.C., he was the son of the late James A. Harrell Sr. and the late Sarah Maggie Broglin Harrell. He was a retired truck driver, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and served in Germany and various stateside bases for 17 1/2 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Beulher of Wilmington, N.C., Lisa Vaughn of Roanoke, Va., and Christa Harrell of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; three sisters, Reva Mizelle of Elizabeth City, N.C., Alice H. Dortch and Peggy Wheeler of Rich Square, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Burial followed in Aimwell Cemetery on McWhite’s Lane in Pamplico.

Emilee I. Hemingway
Emilee Rachel Izlar Hemingway, 71, widow of Joseph Olvin Hemingway Sr., died Friday, May 9, 2003, in the Georgetown hospital.

Born Nov. 26, 1931, in Bennettsville, she was the daughter of the late Hal Emerson Izlar and the late Blanche Beckham Venning Izlar. She was a 1949 honor graduate of Summerton High School, a 1951 graduate of Frampton School of Floral Design, a graduate of required emergency preparedness courses for South Carolina, received the Area 6 Emergency Preparedness Director Award in 1988, Hugo Award in 1989, commendation from House of Representatives and Senate for service during Hurricane Hugo, was a member of the DAR, former Sunday School teacher and the MYF leader for Summerton United Methodist Church, was Clarendon County Emergency Preparedness Director for 20 years and a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church.

Survivors include a son, Joseph Olvin Hemingway Jr. and wife, Sherry of Clayton, N.C.; two daughters, Hallie H. Saunders and husband, Al of Georgetown, and Becky H. Sweat and husband, Pat of Woodlands, Texas; seven grandchildren, Shannon Saunders, Aaron Saunders, Ben Hemingway, Kayla Sweat, Kirk Hemingway, Ryan Sweat and Laura Hemingway.

A sister Blanche Elizabeth Izlar preceded her in death.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday in Grace Christian Fellowship Church with the Rev. Mike Murdoch officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jackie Hodge, Alec Hemingway, Mac Hemingway, Glenn Costello, Riley Venning, and Clint Cogdill. Honorary pallbearer was Herbert Venning.

Memorials may be made to Grace Christian Fellowship Church, P.O. Box 702, Manning, SC 29102.

Florence B. Hoskins
Sumter – Florence Benbow Hoskins, 48, wife of Eugene Hoskins, died Friday, May 2, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 5, 1954, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Felix Benbow and Viola Nelson Benbow. She was educated in the Clarendon County school system and graduated from Manning High School. She was employed by Yuasa Exide for 24 years. In 1976, she married Mr. William Eugene Hoskins.

Survivors besides her husband, Eugene Hoskins of Columbia; include one son Marcue Eugene Hoskins of the home; one daughter Bethany Alexis Hoskins of Sumter; four grandchildren, Shyheif Eugene Hoskins, Kavon Amir Hoskins, Victor Orisrio Miller and Jaliyah Armon Miller; three brothers, General Lee (Thelma) Benbow, James (Johnnie) Benbow and Ulysses Benbow; four sisters, Shirley (Nathaniel) Bligen, Lourina (Clayton) Sutton, Catherine (Roosevelt) Owen and Annie M. (Benjamin) Stafford; and mother-in-law, Dorothy (James) Pugh.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Felix Benbow Jr. and John Benbow; and a sister, Pauline Blanding.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc. with James Pugh Sr. officiating.
