Charlie E. Ward
Charlie Eugene Ward, 92, husband of Edna Ragin Ward, died Thursday, February 21, 2002, at his home.

Born June 13, 1909, in Davis Station, he was the son of the late William Shovine Ward and Lilly Ann Aycock Ward. He was a farmer and a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two daughters, Barbara “Bobbie” Ward Land of Sumter and Dianne Ward of Bishopville; three sons, Oneil Ward, Edward Ward and Ray Ward of Manning; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Ward Bullock.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Pettit officiating. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons Jimmy Parker, Eddie Ward, Brian Ward, J.C. Ward, Dave Harrison and Billy Ray Ward.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Adrian C. Taylor Sr.
Sumter - Adrian Clyde Taylor Sr., 81, husband of Lucille B. Taylor, died Wednesday, February 26, 2003.

Born in New Brookland, S.C., he was the son of the late Emanuel O. Taylor and the late Lillie Ruth Frye Taylor. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired self-employed brick contractor and a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Survivors include his wife of Sumter; three sons, David Taylor of Lexington, Gerald Taylor and his wife, Brenda, of Manning, and Adrian Taylor Jr. and his wife, Lorraine, of Sumter; a daughter, Patricia Geddings and her husband, John H., of Sumter; two half-brothers, Marvin Taylor and Marion Taylor of Sumter; two half-sisters, Ruth Brown of Sumter and Jean Ethridge of Bison, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Taylor; and two sisters, Louise Williams and Gladys Payton.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Brian Magaw officiating.

John W. McLendon
John Willard McLendon, 78, widower of Lillian McLendon, died Thursday, February 28, 2002, at the V.A. Hospital in Charleston.

Born in St. Stephen, he was the son of the late Harry Cleveland and Sara Jane Logan McLendon. He was a retired farmer and car dealer. He was a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a sister, Mary McLendon Russ of Columbia; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by two brothers, Ollie and Heyward McLendon and three sisters, margaret McLendon, Dorothy Holliday and Lillian M. Setzler.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Helvey officiating.

Burial followed in the Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Robbie Holliday, Bobby Logan, Weston Logan, Don Mathis, Cecil Carter and Bill Perkins were pallbearers. Honorary pallbears were George Covington, George Jones Sr. and Harmon Holliday.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church.

L.D. Smith
L.D. Smith, 52, husband of Shirley Dow Smith, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 3, 1949, in Manning, he was the son of Mary Moorer Smith and the late Clifton Smith Sr. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Fellowship Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a member of the deacon board, usher board, senior and adult choirs. He was employed by Yuasa/Exide in Sumter for 16 years.

Survivors besides his wife of the home and his mother of Manning include two sons, Terrell Smith of Clemson and Kelvin Smith of the home; a daughter, Cassandra S. Bosier of Columbia; eight brothers, Leroy Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y., John Henry Smith, Homer Smith, Nelson Smith, Jeremiah Smith and Isaiah Smith of Manning, Clifton Smith of Summerton and Albertus Smith of Sumter; six sisters, Lucille McFadden, Dorthina Hilton, Linda McFadden, Brenda James and Ida Mae Jones of Manning and Rose Mary Burkette of Columbia; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Nathan Smith and three additional siblings.

Services were 3 p.m. Friday at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnathan Mouzon delivering the eulogy and the Rev. S.W. Whack officiating along with the Revs. Sylvester Hicks, Ramsey McFadden and Dennis Jeffcoat and Minister Johnathan Anderson assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Lennie E. Morris
Pinewood - Lennie E. Morris, 51, husband of Linda Whetzel Morris, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at his home in Pinewood.

Born Aug. 8, 1951, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Jack and Nonie Bochette Morris. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, owner and operator of Morris Home Improvements, and a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Pinewood include a son, Robert E. Morris of Pinewood; a daughter, Nonie Nichols of Sumter; two brothers, Lee Morris and wife, Hilda, of Pinewood and Richard Boettger of Sumter; a half-brother, Tommy Morris of Sumter; a sister, Linda Griffith of Sumter; an aunt, Darlene Bochette of Sumter; a niece, Lisa Thomas of Sumter; a number of nephews; and a granddaughter.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday in Providence Baptist Church with the Revs. Harold Greene, Dale Turner and G.W. Harrell officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Sumter.

Pallbearers included Keith Hodge, Carol Avins, Melvin Avins, Fernando Gomez, Mark McLeod and Julian Simmons.

Honorary pallbearer was Tommy Turner.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to Disabled American Veterans.

T. B. Hulsey
Tasker Bliss “Tex” Hulsey, 85, widower of Dorothy Ridgeway Hulsey, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the home of his daughter in Manning.

Born Jan. 15, 1918, in Gainesville, Ga., he was the son of the late Claude and Annie Forrester Hulsey Sr. He was a 1957 graduate of Dell Laboratory and X-ray School in Asheville, and was employed by Byerly Hospital and Hartsville Hospital. He was a WWII Army Air Corp veteran and a retired farmer and merchant. Mr. Hulsey was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Dot Josey and husband, Keith Jr. of Manning; three brothers, Clinton Hulsey of Chattanooga, Tenn., Claude Hulsey Jr. and Jerry Hulsey of Gainesville, Ga.; three grandchildren, Keith Josey III of Biloxi, Miss., Clinton H. Josey and Dory J. Pack of Manning; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Jewell Hulsey, Mildred Dilbeck and Bobbie Hulsey; and four brothers, Quinton Hulsey, Bright Hulsey, Forrester Hulsey and George K. Hulsey.

He donated his body to the Medical University of South Carolina.

Memorials may be made to the Turbeville Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 299, Turbeville, S.C. 29162 or to Clarendon Relay for Life.

Fannie Mae Riley
Sumter - Fannie Mae Riley, 68, died Monday, March 24, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 14, 1935, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Ferdinand Riley Sr. and Pearl Clark Riley. She was known as the family’s baby sister, a member of Taw Caw Baptist Church and she was the sister and sister-in-law of the Six Gospelettes.

Survivors include a foster son, the Dr. Rev. William T. Johnson of Sumter; a daughter, Gloria Baxter of Thomasville, N.C.; an adopted daughter, Leatha M. Riley of the home; a foster daughter, Karen Johnson of Sumter; a brother, Rochester Johnson of Baltimore; five sisters, Esther Carter, Mary Lou Junious, Pearleatha House, Minne Ree Gilyant and Mamie Lee Jackson; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ferdinand Riley Jr.; and a sister, Janie Johnson.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Baptist Church with Dr. Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Joseph D. Ard
Joseph Deleon “J.D.” Ard, 60, husband of June Ridgeway Ard, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born Jan. 17, 1943, in Lake City, he was the son of the late Troy and Opal Collins Ard. he was a quality assurance technician, a Navy veteran, and a member of Second Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two sons, Joseph Deleon Ard Jr., and Michael Shawn Ard of Manning; a daughter, Jennifer Delynn Ard of Manning; three sisters, Carolyn Sawyer of Columbia, Gertie Barnhill and Dottie Collins of Marion; a brother, Jerry Ard of Lake City and three grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Pec Chatman officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, South Carolina Office, P.O. Box 23128, Columbia, S.C. 29224-3128.

Pallbearers included Jamie Ridgeway, Jeremy Ridgeway, Ken Justice, Leo Sustaita, Richard DuBose and Mac Bagnal.

Honorary pallbearer was Ken Justice Jr.

Pastor Bertha M. Rufus-Brown
Sumter - Pastor Bertha M. Tindal Rufus-Brown, 58, widow of Booker T. Brown, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 9, 1944, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Clifton Tindal Sr. and Addie Singleton Tindal.

She attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Sumter Beauty College, A.L. William Class of Insurance and the School of Religion at Morris College. She was a bold witness for the Lord, fervent in her knowledge of the scriptures and a steadfast believer in the name of Jesus. She touched the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Survivors include four sons, Thomas Rufus Jr. (Lula), Barry Rufus (Regina) and Jeffrey Laron Rufus of Charlotte, N.C., and Terry Rufus (Jacquelyn) of Sumter; a daughter, Wilhelmenia Tindal Massey (Derrick) of Charlotte; an adopted son, Apostle Phillip O. Coleman; three adopted daughters, Mary Hilton of Sumter, Debra Thomas of Columbia and Brenda White of Manning; a brother, Sammie Lee Tindal of Sumter; four sisters, Mary Lou Spencer of Wilmington, Del., Dorothy M. Davis of Forrestville, Md., Rosa Lee Tindal of Washington, D.C., and Ella Nora Gamble (Otis) of Landover, Md.; 11 grandchildren; two adopted grandchildren; an aunt; an uncle; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Supernatural Deliverance Tabernacle, Lynchburg, with Apostle Phillip O. Coleman, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister Adam Culps and the Revs. Baxter and Vermell Humes.

William Bryant Jr.
William Bryant Jr., 53, husband of Sadie Hilton Bryant, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 26, 1949, in Clarendon County, he was the son of William Bryant Sr. and Marie Johnson Bryant. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. Mr. Bryant was a member of St. John Baptist Church in the Bloomville community of Clarendon County, and he worked in different capacities in Clarendon County.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include a son, Gary M. Bryant (Iris) of Manning; a daughter, Tammy L. Dingle (Jimmy) of Manning; a brother, Rickie Bryant (Paula) of Summerton; two sisters, Mary L. Tomlin (George) and Linda A. Harris (Thomas) of Manning; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Chris Bryant; and two sisters, Rosie Marie Bryant and Pearline Bryant McDuffie.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at St. John Baptist Church, Bloomville community, with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson presiding. The Rev. Otis Wright Sr., Elder George McKnight, Prophet George R. Mitchell and Minister Calvin Burgess officiated.

Burial followed in St. Matthew Cemetery.
