Joe Nathan Tindal
Joe Nathan Tindal, 60, companion of Catherine Billie, died Thurs., Sept. 25, 2003, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born Jan. 3, 1943, in the Summerton section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Lillie Pearl Witherspoon Tindal and the late Ellison Tindal Jr.

He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed by Walker Tire and Recapping for more than 40 years until he retired because of declining health.

Survivors, other than his companion, Catherine Billie, and mother Lillie W. Tindal, of the home, include three sons, Hercules (Sally) Williams of Manning, James Bannister of Summerton and Joe Nathan Billie of Pinewood; four daughters, Mary (Michael) Gipson of Eastover, Joshelia Billie and Natasha Billie, both of Pinewood, and Cassandra (Moses) Jackson of Paxville; a brother, Harold (Willene) Tindal of Summerton; two sisters, Vashtie (Donnie) Mack of Bennettsville and Lillease (James) Dingle of Summerton; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny Lee and Edward Tindal.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Tues., Sept.30, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton. The Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Dr. James L. Tindal Sr.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge in the arrangements.

May M. Thomas
COLUMBIA — May Murchison Thomas, 69, formerly of Manning, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia.

Born Aug. 6, 1934, in Sumter, a daughter of Gough C. and May Murchison Thomas, she was a retired program director for Congaree Girl Scouts of America, a graduate of Newberry College and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are cousins, Mercelene Thomas Miller of Pawley’s Island and Edward L. Manigault of Cincinnati; extended family, Wendy and John Hamilton of Columbia, and Cynthia Steele of Columbia. She was preceded in death by a brother, F. Courtney Thomas.

Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Manning Cemetery. Rev. Carey S. McElveen officiated.

A memorial service will be held in Columbia at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heifer International Project, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock Ark. 72203 or War Dogs Memorial, P.O. Box 475, Kearney, N.J. 07032.

John Elliot Rowe Jr.
John Elliot Rowe Jr., 92, widower of Sara Shirer Rowe, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at his home.

Born Aug. 6, 1911, in Summerton, he was a son of the late John Elliot Rowe Sr. and the late Anna Chewning Rowe. He was retired owner and operator of Rowe-Tomlinson Pharmacy, a lifelong member of Manning United Methodist Church and former president of the Men’s Bible Class, a graduate of the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy in 1933, and was one of the last survivors of that class, a member of the Manning Rotary Club, where he was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award, and a Mason.

Surviving are a son, Dr. John Elliot “Jack” (Hazel Anne) Rowe III, of Sumter; two grandchildren, John “Elliot” Rowe IV of Bowman and Julie Gramling Rowe of Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in Manning United Methodist Church. The Rev. Debra Quilling and the Rev. Dr. James C. Adams officiated. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers were A.B. Anderson, Elliot Rowe, Ansel McFaddin, Don Ellis, Billy Rowe and Alex Shirer.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, SC 29102 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29150.

Geraldine Moore
Geraldine Moore, 86, widow of Wallace V. Moore, died Wed., Sept. 24, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born Sept. 4, 1917, in St. Paul, Minn., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Pearl Clemmons Staples. She was a retired technician for the 3M Corporation.

Survivors include a son, Dennis Moore of Lino Lakes, MN; and a daughter, Judith M. Coker of Greeleyville, SC; two granddaughters, Katherine Moore and Tracey Boicort; a grandson, Scott Oberembt; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Minnesota.

James Montgomery Jr.
Mr. James Montgomery Jr., 55, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Montgomery.

Born Feb. 5, 1948, in Manning, he was a son of the late James Montgomery Sr. and the late Isabella Durant Montgomery.

He obtained his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and he was a member of the Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was employed in the construction industry in Florida, South Carolina and Maryland.

Other survivors include two sons, Jerry Montgomery and Joseph Montgomery of Baltimore; two daughters, Deborah Montgomery and Diane Montgomery of Baltimore; four sisters, Ethel Moorer of New York, Annie Mae Montgomery of Halliday, Fla., Evelyn Montgomery of Manning and Frances M. Pugh (Lawrence) of Manning; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Poter Francis and Matthew Brooks.

Funeral services were held Monday at 4 p.m. at Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church, Manning. Officiating ministers were Rev. G.K. Carter, evangelist Sarah Miller and Rev. J.H. Pringle. Burial followed in the Fourth Crossroad Cemetery.

Fleming and Delaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

George Frierson
George Frierson, 67, husband of Loretta Frierson, died Sept. 22, 2003, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility, Summerton.

Born Nov. 10, 1935, in Manning, he was a son of the late Albert and Ruth Frierson. George was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed at Santee Motor Co. Inc. until he retired in 1999. He was known throughout Clarendon County as an expert auto mechanic. He joined the Trinity AME Church at an early age.

Survivors besides his wife include six sons, Harold, George and Ronald Frierson, of Sumter, Freddie, Calvin and Donald Frierson of Manning; two daughters, Diane Blanding of Manning and Patricia Bethea of New York City; two brothers, Herbert Frierson of Chesapeake, Va., and Willie James Frierson of Manning; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and adopted grandchildren, Marcus and Maurice Lloyd.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Trinity AME Church with the Rev. C. Richburg, the Rev. H.A. Hinton, the Rev. Clifton Gaymon, Minister Major Lloyd and the Rev. Deloris Gerow.

Blackwell & Jenkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Junious Canty
Junious “Hall” Canty, 77, widower of Merthlen E. Doughty York, died Sat., Sept. 20, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 2, 1926, in Summerton, he was a son of the late John Canty and Ophelia Oliver Canty. He received his education in the public schools of Summerton. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and joined Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton.

Survivors include five sons, Jessie James (Kay) Canty of Portage, Wis., Jimmy L. (Cynthia) Canty and Lincoln Canty of Baltimore, Linburg (Sherlene) Canty of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Eugene Canty of Manning; two daughters, Classie Canty of Manning and Linda (Webb) Lewis of Davis Station; two brothers, Willie Canty and Robert (Cookie) Canty of Baltimore; four sisters, Mary Ragin of Camden, N.J., Irene Canty and Clara Horne of Baltimore, and Norma Georgia of Manning; 21 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Frank James and Leon Canty.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 25th at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, The Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiated, assisted by evangelist Johnson. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Leonard Adger Sr.
Leonard Adger Sr., 52, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born July 7, 1950, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Elizabeth Ludd Adger and the late Sylvester Adger Sr. He was employed by the Sunbeam Corporation for 16 years and later employed by Yusa/EnerSys for another 16 years. He was an avid lover of music and sang with several gospel groups to include the Bright Stars of Manning, Junior Wells and the Gospel Stars along with Frankie Smalls and the Soul Searchers, both of Sumter. He was previously married to Roxena Dukes Adger of Sumter.

Survivors include three sons, Leonard (Lori) Adger Jr. of Douglasville, Ga., Christopher W. Adger of Atlanta and Derrick A. Adger of Sumter; four brothers, Franklin Adger of NaShua, N.H., the Rev. John Earl (Juanita) Adger and Sylvester Adger Jr. of Sumter, and Jerome Adger of Manning; five sisters, Minnie Ross Thomas and Sarah A. (Randy) Law of Sumter, Barbara T. Adger of Augusta, Ga., and Betty J. Lyons and Melissa Adger of Manning; three grandchildren, Leonard Adger III, Lamar Adger and Lorenzo Adger; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James LeGrant and Joseph Adger; and a sister, Evelyn Adger.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark Baptist Church in Silver with the Rev. W.J. Chandler officiating, assisted by the Rev. J.H. Pringle.

Rounnette C. Baker
Sumter - Rounnette Corbett Baker, 74, wife of Clyde McSwain Baker Jr., died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.

Born Jan. 12, 1929, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late John Allen and Ola Thigpen Corbett. She was a member of Bondovlove Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a brother, John A. Corbett of Manning; five sisters, Lois Corbett Kennedy of Kingstree, Johnnie Mae Corbett Repsher of Manning, Ola Virginia Corbett Brago of Goose Creek, Mary Corbett Lotwis of Manning and Helen Corbett Weeks of Manning; two grandsons, Gerald Wayne Elmore Jr. and wife, Susan Murphy Elmore, of Greenwood and Bryan Neil Elmore and wife, Amanda Travis Elmore, of Melbourne, Fla.; and two great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia B. Elmore, and a sister, Betty Lou Corbett Harring.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bondovlove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Bondovlove Baptist Church Building Fund, 2755 Carter Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Pallbearers were Lin Rainey, Johnny Weeks, Robbie Weeks, Allan Richburg, Johnny Corbett and Terry Benton.

Alberta K. Garrick
Sumter - Alberta Kennedy Garrick, 70, of 1895 Fletcher Drive, wife of Hercules Garrick Sr., died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at her home.

Born Dec. 20, 1932, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late David Kennedy and Alberta Cousar Kennedy. In her youth, she joined Bethel AME Church and later joined St. Paul Holiness Church.

Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Hercules Garrick Jr. of Sumter and Anthony Robinson of Sumter, whom she raised as her son; two brothers, Melvin Kennedy of Philadelphia, Pa., and Leon Kennedy of Bronx, N.Y.; a sister, Rosa Lee Johnson of Philadelphia; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by Joyce Robinson, whom she raised as a daughter, four sisters and three brothers.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. today at St. Paul Holiness Church with Pastor Shirley Holiday officiating, assisted by Bishops Joseph Brunson, Frank Brooks and the Rev. James Blassingame.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Brotherhood of St. Paul Holiness Church served as pallbearers.

Missionaries of St. Paul Holiness Church served as flower bearers.
