Charles Leo Barrineau
LAKE CITY — Mr. Charles Leo Barrineau, age 67, died Wed., Sept. 3, 2003, at Duke Hospital after an illness.

Funeral services were held Sat., Sept. 6, at the Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in the church cemetery directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Dorris William Barrineau and Susan Emma Robinson Barrineau. He was a man of many talents and occupations. He was the owner of the Pinewood Sawmill and Lumber Co., a farmer, and contractor in home construction. He was the creator and distributor of “Old Red’s Bar-B-Que Sauce” and he was a member of the Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Barrineau and Bethea Barrineau.

Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Grooms Barrineau of the home; three sons, Stevie (Nina) Barrineau and Thom (Kelli) Barrineau of Lake City and Kerry (Kim) Barrineau of Turbeville; one stepdaughter, Dianne (Ed) Phillips of Birmingham, Ala.; three stepsons, Dennis Fryar, David Fryar and Chris (Julie) Fryar, all of Birmingham, Ala.; four sisters, Dorothy Beck of West Columbia, Lynnison Jeffers of Columbia, Frankie Humphries of Lake City and Libby Ann Rimmer of Charlotte; two brothers, David (Sonny) Barrineau of Newberry and Joe Barrineau of Prospect; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery Fund.

James William Harper Jr.
James William Harper Jr., 73, husband of Frances Boatwright Harper, died Wed., Sept. 3, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late James W. Harper Sr. and the late Annie Laurie Williams Harper. Mr. Harper was the owner and operator of Harper Radio and Television Shop and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sumter.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a daughter, Sandy Harper; and a nephew, Lee Glover.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Road, Columbia, SC 29210.

Joseph Harrison
Joseph Harrison, 41, died Mon., Sept. 1, 2003, at his residence, 1094 Featherwood, Turbeville.

Born July 24, 1962, in Turbeville, he was a son of the Rev. Winnie Witherspoon Walker and Eugene Kennedy and stepson of the late Walter L. Walker. He graduated from P.S. 28 High School, 1979, New York, N.Y. He also attended Berkley Technical School, majoring in business administration. He joined Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he was a member of the young adult choir and usher’s board. After moving to Turbeville, he became a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his mother, the Rev. Winnie W. Walker of New York City, and father, Eugene (Claries) Kennedy of New Zion, include one brother, Walter D. Walter of New York City; maternal grandmother, Virginia W. Pearson of Turbeville; and paternal grandfather, Junior McFadden of Gable.

Funeral services were held Sat., Sept. 6, at Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Hickory Grove Church Road, Turbeville, with the Rev. Zander Davis, pastor, assisting the Rev. Winnie W. Walker, the Rev. L. Wheeler, Minister Rhonda Keels and Minister Willie W. Witherspoon.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Merlian Johnson
PINEWOOD – Merlian Johnson was born on Nov. 1, 1954, in Clarendon County, to Vermell Way Johnson Singleton and the late Leroy Johnson, and was the stepdaughter of the late Moultrie Singleton.

Merlian, in her youth, was reared and baptized in Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood. She was an assistant secretary/secretary of the Sunday School Department and she also was a missionary/jubilee choir member until her health failed. She was a 1972 graduate of Furman High School in Sumter. Merlian also attended Central Carolina Technical College, where she majored in business and earned a degree in office systems technology. Merlian was a faithful employee of Sumter County School District 17, where she served as a substitute teacher.

On Sat., Aug. 30, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital, she was called to her eternal rest.

Merlian leaves to cherish her memory, her loving mother, Mrs. Vermell Way Johnson Singleton of Pinewood; two devoted sons, Terry O’Neal Johnson and Jermaine Johnson of Sumter; two brothers, Lee Roger (Ida) Johnson of Pinewood and Wallace (Jean) Johnson of San Jose, Calif.; a stepbrother, Michael Singleton of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a stepsister, Sarah E. Briggs of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Johnson Jr.; and a special aunt, Christine Brunson.

Services will be held Thurs., Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood with the Rev. E. L. Sanders, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. R. A. Johnson.

Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.

Harper Sage Livingston
Harper Sage Livingston, infant daughter of Leslie Paul “Bubba” Livingston Jr. and McCuen Bennett Livingston, died Thurs., Sept. 4, 2003, in Tuomey Hospital.

Surviving besides her parents of Pinewood are twin sister, Lola Grace Livingston; maternal grandmother, Lola Tomlinson Bradshaw of Manning; paternal grandparents, Leslie Paul Livingston Sr. and Helen Harper Livingston of Pinewood; maternal great-grandmothers, Dell Brunson Tomlinson of Manning and Helen McCuen Bennett of Rock Hill; a maternal uncle, Randolph Lee Bradshaw of Manning; maternal aunts, Kell B. Culclasure of Manning and Carlie B. Green of Sumter; paternal uncle, James Herman Livingston of Pinewood; and paternal aunt, Marcia Lynn Raymond of Pinewood.

She was preceded in death by maternal grandfathers, Gerald Sage Bradshaw and James Morrell Bennett.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Mae Elizabeth Pullins Rausch
Mae Elizabeth Pullins Rausch, 82, widow of John Lewis Rausch, died Sat., Sept. 6, 2003, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility.

Services will be held at a later date in Marysville, Ohio.

Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Annie W. Hatfield
JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Evangelist Annie Williams Hatfield, 79, wife of Rufus Hatfield, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at New Jersey Medical Center in Jersey City, N.J.

Born March 29, 1924, in Camilla, Ga., she was a daughter of John L. Williams Sr. and Mariah Mayo Williams.

She graduated from Rockdale High School and District College of Cosmetology in Washington, D.C. In her youth, she joined Antioch Baptist Church in Camilla. After marriage, she joined Trinity AME Church in Manning and later she joined Mount Sinai FBH Church in Manning. She was the owner and operator of Hatfield Beauty Shop in Manning.

Survivors include a sister, Susie Williams of Jersey City; a sister-in-law, Jessie Bea Hatfield of Detroit; three nieces, Eretha Domnie and Joann Dutton, both of Jersey City, and Lueretha (Russell) Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a nephew, John A. (Bessie) McGriff Sr. of Manning; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Susie Williams, and two brothers, England Williams and John L. Williams Jr.

Funeral services were held on Sat., Sept. 13, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning, with the Rev. Cleophas Smith presiding, assisted by Presiding Elder Dr. Bennie Colclough, the Rev. Etherleen Bethune, the Rev. George P. Windley and the Rev. Dorothy Dukes. The Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat delivered the eulogy. Burial was in Goodwill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Winfield S. Mims
Winfield Scott “Doc” Mims, 59, died Sat., Sept. 13, 2003, in Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia.

Born Sept. 15, 1943, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late Carl and Elizabeth Amerson Mims. He was a realtor and a contractor and was of the Methodist faith. He was a U. S. Army veteran.

Survivors include two sons, Winfield Scott Mims Jr., of St. Cloud, Fla., and Anthony Mims of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Elizabeth Britt of Alcolu and Patsy Hildebrand of Manning; a brother, Carl M. Mims of Weldon, N.C.; two grandchildren, Anthony Nathan Mims and Destiny Marie Mims.

Services were held on Mon., Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Robert Watford officiated. Burial followed in the Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Sharon Burke, 6172 Hwy. 301, Alcolu, SC 29001.

Cooper Dickson Thornton
Cooper Dickson Thornton, widow of Labon Thornton, died Wed., Sept. 10, 2003, at the Presbyterian Home in Clinton.

Born in Fair Bluff, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Warren Burgess Dickson and the late Cooper DuRant Dickson. She grew up in Manning, where she graduated valedictorian from Manning High School and attended the University of South Carolina. Her 50 years of marriage were spent in Raleigh, N.C., and Manning. She was retired from the Clarendon County Treasurer’s office and was a member of The Presbyterian Church at Manning, where she served as an elder.

She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jim Hall of Greenville; two grandsons, Rob Hall of Greenville and Jay Hall of Birmingham, Ala.; a granddaughter, Mary Carolyn Titus of Charlotte, N.C.; five great-grandchildren; a niece; and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert DuRant Thornton.

Funeral services were held on Sat., Sept. 13, in The Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating. Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Mabel Springs Welch
Mabel Springs Welch, 74, widow of Samuel Luther Welch, died Thurs., Sept. 11, 2003, in a Florence hospital.

Born Sept. 24, 1928, in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Maxie B. Springs Jr. and the late Lillian Anne Matthews Springs. She was a member of Salem Freewill Baptist Church at Coward.

Surviving are a son, Luther Devonne Welch of Hanahan; a daughter, Winifred Elaine Duke of Lamar; three sisters, Gladys Tunstall of Brunson, Mary McCutcheon Deas of Effingham and Nellie Wallace of Barnwell; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Howard Welch.

Funeral services were held on Sun., Sept. 14, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Lloyd Ackerman officiated, assisted by the Rev. James Saint. Burial followed in Beulah Cemetery near Olanta.

Willie Cooper Sr.
Willie “Dunk” Cooper Sr., 76, widower of Laree Witherspoon Cooper, died Sat., Sept. 13, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born May 20, 1927, in the Gable section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Hampton Cooper and Florence Johnson Cooper. He was a graduate of Melina Parochial School. He was a life-long member of Melina Presbyterian Church, were he served faithfully until his health failed. He was also a member of Friendship Hunting Club of New Zion. He was a retired employee of Campbell Soup in Sumter and a member of the Blue Moon Christmas Club of Gable.

Survivors include three sons, Willie (Andrea) Cooper Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C., Joseph (Deloris) Cooper of Kingstree and Timothy Cooper of Gable; six daughters, Christine (Hardy) Cooper and Lillie (Leroy) McFadden of Gable, Jerlene C. Davis and Wanda Cooper of Sumter, Linda M. Cooper of Rembert, and Cynthia Cooper of Camden; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Willie Mae; five sisters; and three brothers.

Funeral services were held Fri., Sept. 19, at Melina Presbyterian Church in Sardinia with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. O.S. Scott, Lorenza Moses, Alfred Bradley and Jerome McCray. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
