James W. Harbiston

WALTERBORO – Mr. James “Jim” Wesley Harbiston, 76, died Friday, April 16, 2004, at Colleton Medical Center.

Mr. Harbiston was born June 8, 1927, in Cottageville, and was a son of the late William Alfred and Susan Catherine Hinton Harbiston. He was the widower of Fernande “Paulette” Piguet Harbiston. He was a retired salesman for 42 years, charter member and former deacon of Edgewood Baptist Church, and served in the United States Army during World War II in the Eastern European Theater. He was a third degree Mason and member of Unity Lodge No. 55, AFM.

Surviving are his son, Robert W. “Bobby” Harbiston of Summerville; daughter, Jacquie Harbiston of Summerton; and three grandchildren, Amber Hope Harbiston, Faith Danielle Harbiston and Katie Brooke Harbiston.

He was preceded in death by a son, Louis Harbiston.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 18, 2004, in the Walterboro Chapel of the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes with the Rev. Ralph Warren and the Rev. Alfred Willis officiating.

Interment followed in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to American Lung Association, 1941 Savage Road, Suite 200-A, Charleston, S.C. 29407.

Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes was in charge of the arrangements.

Alice M. Burns

Alice Marie Burns, 75, wife of William G. Burns, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born Oct. 5, 1928, in Stanhope, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Robert A. and Ida Mae Decker Koenig. She was a retired seamstress and was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are a son, William G. Burns Jr. of Sunrise, Fla.; three daughters, Colleen Ann Moran of Marysville, Calif., Billie Jo Burns of Bayville, N.J., and Ida Mae Lorzik of Budd Lake, N.J.; two sisters, Lenora McConnell and Dolores J. Sickel of Manning; a brother, Fred Koenig of Palm Bay, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin H. Koenig II.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 19, 2004, in the chapel of Morgan Funeral Home in Netcong, N.J. Burial followed in Hackettstown Union Cemetery in Hackettstown, N.J.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of local arrangements.

Phoebe B. Brunson

Mrs. Phoebe Bennett Brunson, 69, wife of Frank Brunson, died Friday, April 9, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born July 11, 1934, in the Summerton community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Mother Queen E. Tindal Bennett and the late Josephus Bennett.

She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Prayer House Mission Church, where she served in several capacities such as the founder of Sunrise Jubilee’s, now known as the Six Gospelettes, Prayer House Mission Youth Choir, church clerk and mother of the mother’s board of the church.

Survivors include a son, James R. (Lisa) Brunson of Summerton; a daughter, Dianne (James) Lesesne of Manning; three brothers, Warren (Helen) Bennett, John (Daisy) Bennett and Nathaniel Bennett, all of Summerton; three sisters, Idell Howell of Elloree, Blondell Bannister and Gladys Robinson, both of Summerton; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at Prayer House Mission, Davis Cross Road community, with Mother Queen E. Bennett and Founder Bishop Johnnie L. Gilliam Sr., pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Louise Bowman

Louise Bowman, 61, died Monday, April 12, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born Oct. 5, 1927, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late John L. Bowman and Emma Meggett and stepdaughter of John Meggett and mother of Dorrell Bowman. She accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church. After relocating to Manning, she joined Ebenezer Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Manning Training School and a graduate of Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn, N.Y. She was employed by the Board of Education in New York City and retired in 1991.

Survivors include two adopted sons, Robert L. Mack of Florence and Willie E. Scott of Savannah, Ga.; one daughter Dorrell Bowman of the home; and a grandson reared in the home, Bryan Bowman.

She was preceded in death by one adopted sister, Irma McCoy.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 18, 2004, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg officiating.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Inez Bowman

Inez Bowman, 84, wife of Isaac Bowman, died April 7, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born July 13, 1919, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Pinckney Ragin and Luvenia Lawson Ragin. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined the Oaks AME Church. Later she moved her membership to Mount Calvary Holiness Church, where she served on the deaconess board and many other organizations until her health failed.

Survivors include two special nephews of the home, Johnny and James Ragin; a niece, Mary (Roy) Gilliens; a special niece, Lotia Lawson Fort of Brooklyn, N.Y.; an adopted grandniece, Latasha Ragin; and a host of other nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Liberty Hill AME Church, Liberty Hill Road, Summerton, with Bishop Amos Major officiating and Pastor Melvin J. Capers presiding.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Albert Lee Blanding

Albert Lee Blanding, 59, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at University Hospital, Augusta, Ga.

Born May 12, 1944, in the Santee Lake section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Mary Jane Davis Brock and the late Henry Brock Sr. He attended Manning Training School. In his youth, he attended Society Hill AME Church. Upon moving to New York City, he gained employment with the New York City Transit Authority and retired. After retirement, he moved to Augusta, Ga.

Survivors besides his mother, Mary Jane D. Brock of Manning, include two sons, Albert Blanding Jr. and Anthony Blanding of Roanoke, Va.; three daughters, Rita Blanding of Seattle, Wash., Sonya Blanding of Newbern, N.C., and Sharon Blanding of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four brothers, Robert Blanding of Manning, Louis (Eva) Brock of Pocono, Pa., Henry Brock Jr. of Augusta, Ga., and Charlie Brock of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; two sisters, Bertha (Al) Adams of Long Island, N.Y., and Gwenderlyn (Jerry) Harper of Irvington, N.J.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Charlie Blanding; and one sister, Jewel Blanding-Witherspoon.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Society Hill AME Church, in the Jordan community of Manning, with the Rev. Leon Terry, pastor, officiating, assisted by Evangelist Anita Cutts.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Majorie T. Benbow

Majorie Tindal Benbow, 61, widow of Charlie Benbow, died April 11, 2004, at Mountainside Hospital, Glen Ridge, N.J.

Born Dec. 25, 1942, in the Summerton section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Beulah Johnson Autrey and adopted by Ellison Tindal and Lee Boyd Tindal. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County District 1. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. Later she joined New Light Baptist Church. She was a member of the missionary society. She was a health care aide. She was also a member of city council board for Bloomfield, N.J.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth F. Benbow of Bloomfield, N.J.; one daughter, Mona Lisa Benbow of Bloomfield, N.J.; eight sisters, Della McFadden, Stella Holliday, Rosa Lee Grady, all of Wilmington, N.C., Gussie Nixon of Baltimore, Thelma (Ken) Emeb of East Orange, N.J., Sara Cahill, Roseland Autry, Ernestine Jackson, all of Buffalo, N.Y.; two brothers, Clarence Johnson of Manning and Roland Autry of Buffalo; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and seven brothers.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Cypress AME Church, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

James E. Woods

Mr. James E. Woods, died Monday, March 29, 2004, in the Glade General Hospital in Palm Beach, Fla.

Born Feb. 7, 1915, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Mr. Willie Woods and Mrs. Viola Smith Woods. Mr. Woods was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was employed as a truck driver for Williams Furniture/Georgia Pacific for many years until he retired. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II, where he received a medal of victory (Asiatic-Pacific Medal).

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Woods of Palm Beach, Fla.; two sons, Harold (Cathereen) Johnson of Palm Beach, Fla., and Monroe Johnson of Belle Glade, Fla.; and a brother, Sammie Woods of Detroit.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. L. Newson. Burial followed in Green Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Alcolu.

Community Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rosa Bell Welch

Mrs. Rosa Bell Welch, 94, died April 10, 2004, in a Sumter nursing facility after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Tom Morris and Leona McElveen Morris. She was a homemaker and was a member of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucious Columbus Welch, and two sons, Harold Welch, and L.C. Welch.

Surviving are daughters Bertha Coker and Bobbie (Lonnie) Cason, all of Sumter, and Rosa Lee (Harry) Driggers of Turbeville; sons, Louie Ed (Patricia) Welch and Lonnie (Joyce) Welch, all of Florence, and Daniel (Betty) Welch of Sumter; daughter-in-law Gail Welch of Sumter; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 12, 2004, at Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Floyd Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
