Norman C. Morris Sr.

Norman C. Morris Sr., 73, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, at the Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Turbeville, he was the son of the late Kenneth Ellison Morris and the late Sudie Gertrude Spigner Morris. Mr. Morris was a retired owner of Morris Body Shop. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and a Mason.

Surviving are a son, Norman “Cliff” Morris Jr. of Columbia; a daughter, Teresa M. (Ronnie) Berry of Sumter; two sisters, Marjorie (Bobby) Morris of Sumter and Patricia (Charles) Roland of Tyler, Texas; three grandchildren, Stacy Freeman, Tiffany Griffin and Brady Berry, all of Sumter; and two great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Freeman and Coleman Freeman, both of Sumter.

Mr. Morris was preceded in death by a brother, Lavern Morris.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 17, 2004, in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Driggers and the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating.

Burial followed in the Olive Grove Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Michael Josey McLeod

SUMMERVILLE – Michael Josey McLeod, 33, of Summerville passed away at a local hospital Thursday, April 15, 2004.

Born Jan. 18, 1971, to Edward Josey McLeod and Margie Ellen Gibson McLeod, Mr. McLeod was a grandson of the late Thomas E. and Ethel Sweatman McLeod of Holly Hill and the late H.P. Gibson and Mitt Gibson of Summerton.

Mr. McLeod is survived by his wife, Lisa Rooney McLeod; a son, Connor Michael McLeod; his father, Edward Josey McLeod; step-mother Barbara McLeod, an aunt, Linda Reid, all of Charleston; step-sisters, Cynthia Buckler of Richmond, Va. and Lynn Long of Greensboro, N.C.; and a step-brother, the Rev. Randall Booth of Millsboro, Del.

Additional survivors include his in-laws, Jim and Dianne Rooney of Summerville; Kee and Kimberly Farmer and their children Tyler and Alaina of Summerville, Jimmy and Rachel Rooney of Summerville, Sam and Tina Strickland of North Charleston; Doris Rooney of Valparaiso, Fla., and other aunts, uncles and cousins.

A son, Patrick Thomas McLeod and a brother, Thomas H. McLeod preceded Mr. McLeod in death.

Mr. McLeod was employed with Nucor Steel, was of the Baptist faith, and was a member of Ferndale Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 19, 2004, at Ferndale Baptist Church in North Charleston.

Carolina Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Rembert J. Kennedy Sr.

Rembert Jervey Kennedy Sr., age 83, husband of 59 years to Dorothy King Kennedy, died on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born in New Zion a son of the late John Walter and Pinkie Fleming Kennedy. He retired as sales manager from Booth-Boyle Livestock Co. He was active in the Sons of Confederate Veterans, General P.G.T. Beauregard Camp 1458, and a “real son” of the Confederacy. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and was formerly a member of the McLauren Berean Sunday school class.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Rembert J. Kennedy Jr. of Sumter; two daughters, Nancy Kennedy Huett of St. Mary’s, Ga., and Carol King Kennedy of Mt. Pleasant; one sister, Sophie Stephens of Sumter; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eli and Wilbur Kennedy, and one sister, Rilla Kennedy Wright.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Edward McLeod and Dr. George Conn officiating.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Bullock Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Gertrude J. Ballard

Gertrude Johnson Ballard, 97, widow of Gabe Ballard, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Jan. 1, 1910, in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Jim Johnson and Olivia Simmons Johnson.

She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Union Cypress AME Church. She was a lifelong member and served faithfully until her health failed. She served on the missionary society, senior choir and as mother of the church.

Survivors include two sons, Gabe “Coffee” Ballard Jr. and John Ballard, both of Manning; four daughters, Sarah Dixon of Manning, Jannie White of Baltimore, Mary Jones, Daisy (James) Pringle of Miami; and three grandchildren that she reared as her own, Sarah Smith, Sherley Jones and Sharon Jones, all of Manning; 46 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 70 great-great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sons, Westly Ballard, Edward Johnson, Willie Ballard and Alvin Johnson; four sisters; and one brother.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at Union Cypress AME Church in the Jordan Community of Manning with the Rev. Melissa W. Green, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jonathan Anderson and Annie Lou Reily.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred I. Baird

Mildred Inez Baird, 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Henry W. Baird and the late Annie Eunice Baird. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sumter and was a retired beautician.

Survivors include a sister, Carolyn B. Schilling of Lexington; and two brothers, Wilson O’Neal Baird of Florence and Tommy L. Morris of Turbeville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating.

Burial was in the New Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Reo R. Washington

GOOSE CREEK – Reo Richburg Washington, 51, of Goose Creek, and wife of George L. Washington, died Jan. 26, 2004, at Trident Medical Center, Charleston.

Born June 5, 1952, in Summerton, she was the daughter of Moses Richburg and Elder Rebecca McGett Richburg. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County and attended Central Carolina Technical College in Sumter.

Survivors, besides her husband, George L. Washington of Goose Creek, and parents, Moses and Elder Rebecca Richburg of Summerton, include one daughter, Valerie Richburg of Goose Creek; four brothers, Curnell Bennett and Ernest Lee (Jean) Richburg of Summerton, Andre Richburg of Manning and Moses Richburg Jr. of Moreno Valley, Calif.; and three sisters, Thelma (Robert) Uzzell of Dundalk, Md., Willie Mae Gibson of Summerton and Selinda Cabbagestalk of Sumter.

Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, in Manning. Pastor Esther L. Madison officiated the service, assisted by Pastor Gloria S. Brown. Burial followed in Westminister Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Robert M. Shott

Robert Merle Shott, 72, widower of Jean Marie Tingley Shott, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 16, 1931, in Olean, N.Y., he was the son of the late Clarence and Clara Louise Noble Shott. He was a retired technical engineer, and a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include a daughter, Wendy (Jack) Hauenstein of Buffalo, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Laurie Holdcroft of Hinsdale, N.Y.; a brother, Harold Shott of Olean, N.Y.; a sister, Nancy (Phil) Cole of Friendship, N.Y. and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheri Shott and a brother, Gerald Shott.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Jane D. Scott

Mary Jane Duke Scott, 50, wife of Stewart Stanley Scott Sr., died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at her home in North Santee.

Born March 19, 1953, in Kingstree, she was the daughter of David Hartwill and Mary Irene Freeman Duke. Her husband is the owner of Jack’s Creek Marina and she was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors, besides her parents of Manning, and husband of North Santee, include a daughter, Kimberly Jane (Richard) Cooper of North Santee; a son, Stewart Stanley Scott Jr. of North Santee; a stepson, Richard Lee (Brenda) Archibald of Goose Creek; three brothers, Paul Hartwill (Mary Ann) Duke Manning, David Autry (Betty) Duke of Sumter, and Michael Bruce (Jodi) Duke of Manning; four grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Ann Duke Davis; and a nephew, Randy Davis.

Services were held on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Gene Mosier and Richard Hudson officiated the service. Burial followed in Paxville Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to Paxville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 5005, Paxville, SC 29102.

Janie Mae R. Prince

Mrs. Janie Mae Rose Prince departed this earthly life on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at the Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born Jan. 29, 1935, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. Harvey and Mrs. Maggie Preston Rose.

Mrs. Prince was educated in both the Clarendon and Sumter County public schools. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined the Melina Presbyterian Church where she served faithfully as a member until her health failed. She was formerly united in marriage to Robert Prince Sr. and to this loving union five children weaved their lives together to become a close-knit family. Janie was very devoted to her children and grandchildren. She was a sweet, loving person who always went out of her way to help others.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, John D., Hazel, Harvey, George, James, and John Henry Rose; and two sisters, Eva B. Johnson and Rose Lee Hampton.

Survivors include five loving children, Robert B. (Gladys) Prince Jr. and Ronald K. Prince of the home, Roberta (Tommy) Brown, Maggie (Larry) Harrison and Teresa M. (Tony) Prince of Lynchburg; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary L. McFadden of Lynchburg and Margaret L. (Benjamin) Rowe of Philadelphia, Pa.; her mother-in-law, Marie Hardy Prince; five sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Melina Presbyterian Church (USA), Sardinia. The Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Mary Rose-Hagan. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
