Sallie Ragin Watson

Sallie Ragin Watson, 84, wife of the late Henry Watson Jr., died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born August 1, 1919, in Summerton, she was the daughter of Gip Ragin Sr. and Cora Brunson Ragin.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At and early age she joined Liberty Hill AME Church where she was a faithful member.

Survivors include a son, Eddie Lee Watson of the home; a grandson she reared as her own, Levi (Cheryl) Canty of Columbia; a daughter, Sarah W. King of the home; a niece she reared as her own, Teresa L. Jones of the home; a brother, John Ragin Sr. of Yonkers, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Ricky, Kimberly, Angela, Sharon; six great-grandchildren, Devin, Jamie, Krista, Tyler, Maegan and Trevor.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jimmie Watson; a daughter, Dorothy Mae Canty; three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 22, 2004 at the Historical Liberty Hill AME Church, Liberty Hill Road in Summerton.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

John A. Watt Sr.

John Allen Watt Sr., 88, widower of Corrine Redden Watt, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at a local nursing center.

Born in Davis Station, he was a son of the late Elvin Morgan Watt and the late Gertrude Ridgill Watt.

He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.

Survivors include a son, John A. “Johnny” Watt Jr. and his wife, Martha, of Sumter; two brothers, Thomas D. Watt and E.M. Watt, both of Sumter; six sisters, Vera Stokes Bradham, Edna Touchberry, Gertrude Benbow, Margurite Huggins, Roberta Singleton and Tona Chandler, all of Sumter; three stepbrothers, William Singleton of Sumter, Frank Singleton of Chapin and Bobby Singleton of Kentucky; a stepsister, Iris Mills of Mayesville; two grandchildren, John A. Watt III and his wife, Angie, of Sumter and Susan Watt Crouch and her husband, Dr. Timothy E. Crouch, of Florence; four great-grandsons, Harrison Crouch, Bennett Crouch, Jacob Watt and Hunter Watt.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Caroliegh Jackson McElveen, Clyde Watt Hook and Wilma Watt Ridgeway.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 20, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with Dr. Jeff Burns officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 107 E. Liberty St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

David B. Rembert

David Brent Rembert, 20, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at his home.

Born Nov. 16, 1983, in Sumter, he was a son of Henry D. Rembert and Glenda Wells Hawkins. Mr. Rembert attended Trinity United Methodist Church as a youth. He was a 2002 graduate of Laurence Manning Academy and was presently attending Newberry College, where he was a member of the baseball team. He was a former member of the P-15’s baseball team for two years.

Surviving are his father of Sumter; his mother and stepfather, Donnie Hawkins, of Manning; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Wells of Pinewood; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Julian Rembert of Oswego; two brothers, Henry D. Rembert III of Sumter and Joseph Ryan Rembert of Charleston; a stepbrother, Gregory J. Hawkins of Pinewood; a stepsister, Krystal E. Hawkins of Sumter; two aunts, Brenda W. (Radi) Simpson of Sumter and Dawn W. (Steve) Clough of Pinewood; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Carolyn Bickler.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 27, 2004, in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Bridges and the Rev. Dick Broomall officiating.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Laurence Manning Baseball Program or to the Newberry College Baseball Program.

Isacc Tomoney

Graveside services were held Monday, May 31, 2004, for the late Isacc Tomoney at Spring Grove Cemetery in Rimini.

He died Friday, May 27, 2004, at his residence. Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of Joe Simon and the late Annie (Mitt) Tomoney Greene.

He attended the public schools of Clarendon County.

He is survived by his father, Joe Simon of Panolo; two brothers, Thomas and Harry Greene of New York.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Gerald Brunson

Charles Gerald “Jerry” Brunson, 64, husband of Patricia Marsh Brunson, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Paxville, he was a son of the late James R. Brunson and the late Dena Geddings Brunson.

Mr. Brunson was a member of Jefferson Road Freewill Baptist Church. He was a retired construction superintendent with ECB Construction Co. with 35 years of service and most recently was employed by Hunter Builders for 10 years.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a daughter, Teresa Denise Brunson of Sumter; two brothers, James R. Brunson of Sumter and William C. Ardis of Charleston; two sisters, Beatrice Broadway of Jefferson and Katherine Mayer of Pittsburgh.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 3, 2004, in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Burial was in Ashwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Earl W. Chaney

Earl Wendell Chaney, 73, husband of Shirley Gossett Chaney, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004. He was a resident of Wyboo Plantation, where he played golf, fished and enjoyed boating.

Born Sept. 5, 1930, in Horse Cave, Ky., he was the third son of the late Clyde and Eulah Attwell Chaney. He was a retired superintendent and a journeyman electrician IBEW Local 481 for 37 years at Ermco Electrical Co. in Indianapolis. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War, and a master mason in the State of Indiana. Earl served the Lord Jesus in the Center United Methodist Church in Indianapolis and for the past six years in the Manning United Methodist Church.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are three sons, Roger E. (Karen) Chaney of Summerville, Mark G. (Karen) Chaney of Lacrosse, Wis., and Aaron W. (Laura) Chaney of Florence; a daughter, Elizabeth A. (Christopher) Lawrie of Indianapolis; two brothers, Wilford Chaney of Three Springs, Ky., and Alton Chaney of Greenwood, Ind.; a sister, Elry Ferguson of Columbus, Ind.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 4, 2004, in Manning United Methodist Church. The Rev. Debra Quilling officiated.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102, or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Lois Doscher

CHARLESTON – Virginia Lois Thompson Doscher, widow of Nicholas Doscher, and resident of Presbyterian Home of South Carolina in Summerville, entered into eternal rest on the morning of May 31, 2004.

Mrs. Doscher was born Nov. 17, 1906, in Manning, the daughter of Robert Early Thompson and “Bessie” Elizabeth (DuRant) Thompson. She was a 1924 graduate of Manning High School, attended Flora MacDonald College and was the first person to graduate from the Medical Technology Program at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1927 and registered with the American Society of Clinical Pathologist No. 181. She was employed by the Charleston County Health Department at the Medical University of South Carolina for more than 41 years. Upon her retirement, she returned to live in Manning until she moved to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina in 1990. She was an avid gardener, bird watcher and genealogist. She was a member of the First Families of South Carolina, The Huguenot Society, and the Presbyterian Church in Manning.

She is survived by her one son, Frank N. Doscher of Leesburg, Fla.; one daughter, Virginia DuRant Pristas of Crawfordville, Fla.; one brother, William Early Thompson of Augusta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 5, 2004, at the Presbyterian Church at Manning in Manning.

Memorials may be made to The Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, CMR 140, 201 W. 9th North St., Summerville, S.C. 29483.

Maggie W. Fountain

Maggie Wilson Fountain, 77, wife of David Fountain, died May 31, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 5, 1926, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Jake Wilson and Azalee Blanding Wilson. She attended Clarendon County public schools. At an early age, she joined the Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church, where she served until she was called to her eternal rest. She was employed by Sumter School District 17 as a cook for 24 years. During her employment with the school system, she touched the lives of many young people. She enjoyed working in her flower garden.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Fountain-Robinson of Decatur, Ga., and Shirley A. Fountain of Charlotte, N.C.; one son, David Fountain Jr. of the home; one brother, Richard Wilson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one sister, Mary A. Wilson of Norwalk, Conn.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 5, 2004, from the Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville, with the Rev. Henry Pressley, pastor, and the Rev. Levern McKenny, officiating eulogist.

Burial was in Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Churchyard Cemetery.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Moise Hilton Jr.

Moise Hilton Jr., 52, husband of Barbara Felder Hilton, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at his home in Manning.

Born Dec. 28, 1951, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Ruth Murray Hilton and the late Moise Hilton Sr. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed for a number of years with Witherspoon Logging Co. of Manning and was presently employed with Felder Brother’s Logging Co. of Elloree.

Survivors besides his wife, Barbara F. Hilton of the home, and mother, Ruth M. Hilton of Manning, include one son, Antrell Hilton of the home; one daughter, Kyrstal Hilton of the home; five brothers, Arthur (Betty) Hilton, Alvin, Calvin and Jackie Hilton, all of Manning, and Jerry Hilton of St. Stephens; four sisters, Frances (Moses) Felder, Angela and Teresa Hilton, all of Manning, and Lucille (the Rev. Stephen) Singleton of Columbia; 13 aunts; and six uncles.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lakesia Ann.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 4, 2004, at Society Hill AME in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, with the Rev. Leon Terry, pastor, presiding, assisted by the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, the Rev. Darrel Frazier, Minister Effie Hilton, Minister Shirley Waiters and the Rev. Leroy Green to eulogize.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.
