David Nelson Jr.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- David Nelson Jr., son of the late David Nelson Sr. and Annie Rhodes Nelson, was born Aug. 27, 1941, in Gable.

A sister, Dorothy, preceded him in death.

He received his formal education at Walker-Gamble High School, New Zion, graduating in 1959. He also matriculated at Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, N.C. Later, he served three years in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. In his youth, he accepted Christ and became a dedicated member of Melina Presbyterian Church USA, Gable. After relocating to Connecticut, he attended Promise Land Church of God, West Haven. David was employed by Connecticut Transit for 27 years before retirement in 2003. He also owned and operated Doc’s Food Truck.

On Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, at his residence in West Haven, David Nelson Jr. passed away.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice H. Nelson of the home; a devoted son, Shawn Nelson of New Haven; a loving daughter, Tracy Nelson of Branford, Conn.; a loving sister, Pearl Nelson-Welch of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandchildren; three aunts; several nieces, nephews, other cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at Melina Presbyterian Church, Gable, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Mary Rose Hagan and Timothy Howard.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Lois Files

Lois Johnson Hughes Files, 85, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born Nov. 14, 1921, in Gloverville, she was a daughter of the late Norman Sidney and Sally Bell Baker Johnson. She was first married to the late John G. Hughes and then to the late William Rolfe Files. She was owner and operator of the Summerton Diner from 1967 until her retirement in 1986.

Surviving are a daughter, Lynnelle H. Blackwell of Myrtle Beach; a son, Gary Ben (Joyce) Hughes of Summerton and Columbia; a brother, N.S. Johnson Jr. of Aiken; a sister, Eloise Pennington Perkins of Beulah; three grandchildren, John and Michael Buvid and Bonnie Felder; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Rob Pierce officiating.

A private family interment will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Evergreen Cemetery Fund, c/o Johnny Scott, P.O. Box 206, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Alfred J. Floyd Sr.

Alfred Jessie Floyd Sr., 82, widower of Dorothy Thompson Floyd, died Saturday, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Turbeville, he was the son of the late Mahoney Floyd and Edith Elizabeth Morris Floyd.

Floyd was a member of Swan Lake Presbyterian Church and former member of Lemira Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Woodmen of the World. He was retired from the city of Sumter.

Surviving are one son, Alfred J. Floyd Jr. and wife, Melanie, of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Cindy Floyd Gailey and husband, Michael, of Asheville, N.C.; a brother, Hinson Floyd of Georgetown; a sister, Inez Mills of Florida; and four grandchildren, Rachel Gailey, Andrew Gailey, Trey Floyd and Brooks Floyd.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janis Elizabeth Floyd.

Funeral Services were Monday in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Swan Lake Presbyterian Church, 912 Haynsworth St. Sumter, SC 29150, or to Lemira Presbyterian Church, 514 Boulevard Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Laurie M. Weldon

Laurie Montgomery Weldon, age 87, widow of Blease Weldon Sr., died Sept. 2, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born May 29, 1920, in Vance, she was the daughter of the late Yank Montgomery and Alice Butler Montgomery. She was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg County. At an early age, she joined Live Oak AME Church, later Trinity AME, and served as a member of the Missionary Society, Stewardess Board, gospel choir and Board No. 2. She was employed with GTE for 30 years upon retirement.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Frances (Preston) Kinsler of Bronx, N.Y.; two sons, Leon Weldon of the home and Eddie Weldon of Manning; a grandson reared as her own, Eric Weldon of Manning; a sister, Mary Lee (Deacon Aaron) Lemon of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons and a sister.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at Trinity AME Church in Manning, with the Rev. W.J. Harris, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Michael Aiken and the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg.

Burial was in the Live Oak AME Church cemetery in Vance.

Raleigh U. Johnson

TOWSON, Md. ­­– Raleigh Ulysses Johnson, widower of Ruby Lee Cousar Johnson, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, at the Gilcrest Hospice in Towson.

Born Jan. 31, 1928, in Turbeville, he was a son of the late Alexander Coultria Johnson and Pearlie Davis Johnson. He received his education in the public schools of Florence County. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1949. He accepted Christ and joined Jordan Chapel Freewill Baptist and served faithfully.

He is survived by two daughters, Vonzell Varnedoe of Midway, Ga., and Renee McDowell of Lake City; one son, Michael Johnson of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters, Dorothy Johnson of Reistertown, Md., Evelyn Anderson of Randallstown, Md., and Celestine Kennedy of Nashville, Tenn.; two brothers, Grady (Minnie) Johnson of Turbeville and Andrew Johnson of Lake City; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, one granddaughter and two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at Jordan Chapel Freewill Baptist in North Olanta, with Elder Kenneth Gibson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Carnell Hampton, Elder Ronnie L. McFadden and Elder Calvin Burgess.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Catherine Louise Bradham

Catherine Louise Bradham Tisdale, 91, widow of Stephen Eugene Tisdale, died Saturday, August 18, 2007.

Born October 27, 1915, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Dallas Judson and Catherine Lackey Bradham. She was a retired hospital dietitian at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, and a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Margaret (Vic) Attaya of Charleston, Kate Lees of Lake Worth, Fla., and Jean (Leon) Holladay of Alcolu; two sons, Robert J. (Claudia) Tisdale of Elkin, N.C., and Dallas B. Tisdale of Marathon, Fla.; eleven grandchildren; a number of great grandchildren; and one great, great grandson.

She was preceded in death by a son, Paul Tisdale.

A memorial service was held on Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, in Graham Baptist Church in Sumter County, with the Rev. Harold Waynick officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Eugene Levine Jr.

Eugene Levine Jr., 65, departed this earthly life on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 28, 1942, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Eugene Levine Sr. and Anniebell Prince Levine Way. He was also the husband of Mary F. McCain Levine and the stepson of the late Gonzales Way.

Eugene received his early childhood education in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and became a member of Jehovah Baptist Church.

He was employed by Shaw Lumber Co. for 42 years prior to his retirement.

He leaves to cherish his fond memories, his wife of 43 years, Mary F. McCain Levine; a daughter, Betty Levine (Dariell) Cooper; two sons, Eugene (Turkissa) Levine III and Vincent (Evoy) Levine; two former daughters-in-law, Sonya Brown Levine and Agnes Pack Levine; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, James W. (Mable) Levine; uncles, Humiz (Flossie) Way of Sumter, Sonny (Martha Lee) Way and Silas (Aliza) Brunson, both of Manning; aunts, Mary E. King of Flushing, Queens, N.Y., and Calease Bradley and Betty Foster, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, Francis Brown and Isaac Dankins of Sumter; six sisters-in-law, Bert (William) Vinyard of Salina, Kan., Carrie L. (Ozell) Jones of Miami, Fla., Martha Fleming, Emma J. McCain, Edith Lewis and Annette Law, all of Sumter; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Janice Prince, Genivia Prince and Annie Mae Sinkler.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, from John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter, with the Rev. Marion H. Newton, senior pastor of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, the Rev. Velda L. Rucker, associate minister, officiating, eulogist, assisted by Pastor Nate Brock, Ministers Zina Daiz, Carnes Duren and Edmund Hamilton.

Pallbearers were nephews.

Floral bearers were the Usher Ministry of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park, Sumter.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Wallace W. Baughman

Wallace Woodrow Baughman, 82, husband of Betty Ann Tilton Baughman, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born July 11, 1925, in Winnsboro, he was a son of the late Clarence Louis and Cora Lee Hoover Baughman. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a retired self-employed paint contractor, a member of Cypress Fork Free Will Baptist Church, a member of the DAV Commanders Club, and he loved to fish.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are three sons, Mike Baughman of Manning, Tony Tilton of Alcolu and Henry L. Carlisle III of Texas; four daughters, Susan Mazelin and Kathy Cales of Manning, and Deborah Cannon and Melba Baughman of Summerville; a brother, Henry Baughman of Winnsboro; a sister-in-law, Emily Baughman of Gaston; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Odell Mouzon officiating, assisted by the Rev. W.D. Jones.

Burial followed in Cypress Fork Free Will Baptist Church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Cypress Fork Free Will Baptist Church, 5151 N. Brewington Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Mary Nell W. Dukes

Mary Nell Woods Dukes, wife of Thomas Dukes Jr., died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Manning, she was a daughter of Maybell Kennedy Woods and the late George Woods.

She received her formal education in New York at Queens Vocational High School. She also graduated from IBM in Queens, N.Y. She attended Leverich Memorial Church in East Elmhurst, N.Y. After moving to Manning, she joined Society Hill AME Church.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Dukes Jr. of the home; a son, Richard Lee of Ingleside, Texas; a daughter, Kisha (Shawn) Robinson of Thomaston, Ga.; four sisters, Mary R. Harrell of Wilmington, N.C., Shelly (Victor) McLaughlin of New York, Barbara (Ramond) Worsham of Roberta, Ga., and Naomi (Greg) Roberts of Williamston, N.C.; father and mother-in-law, Thomas and Evoila Dukes Sr.; three sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 30, 2007, at Society Hill AME Church, Santee Dam section of Manning, with the Rev. Malachi Gibson, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
