James Anderson Sr.
FLORENCE — James Cuthbert Anderson, Sr., 76, of Florence, SC, died early Sunday morning, December 12, 2004, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mr. Anderson was born in Orangeburg County, SC, a son of the late Oliver R. and Ermine Shuler Anderson. He was a member of the Methodist Faith and a member of the Pee Dee Gun Club. He retired in 1984 as a supervisor for Korn Industries. He will be long remembered as a hunter and a fisherman and as an accomplished wood worker.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Deborah Ann Anderson; and by 4 brothers, Joseph Ashby Anderson, Raymond L. Anderson and Robert Cecil Anderson all of Orangeburg and Oliver Lamar “Buster” Anderson of Santee, SC.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Maxine Robinson Anderson of the home; a daughter, Rose Marie Lynch of Florence; a son, Jimmy (Lisa) Anderson of Florence; grandchildren, Sammie (Angel) Lynch, Neil (Jennifer) Anderson, Ashley Anderson, Beth Anderson and Ryan Anderson, all of Florence; great-grandchildren, Amanda Rose Lynch, Melanie Douglas and William Douglas; 2 sisters-in-law, Lillie Anderson of Orangeburg and Penny Anderson of Santee, SC; a brother, Charles Anderson of Sonora, CA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2004, in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 1:00-2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Anderson, 3306 West Hampton Point Drive, Florence.

William Brown Sr.
GAYLORD, Mich. — Mr. William Curtis “Curt” Brown, Sr., 62, of Gaylord, MI, formerly of Columbia, SC, died Friday, December 10, 2004.
Retired major with the U.S. Army.
Retired from the Columbia U.S. Post Office in 1997.
Resident of Gaylord, MI, since 1999.
He was instrumental in the development of the South Carolina Railroad Museum, past treasurer of the National Association of Letter Carriers, member of the Whaley Street United Methodist Church in Columbia, SC, and former instructor at the 3287th Reserve Officer Training School.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church in Gaylord, MI. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, SC.

John O’Neil
COLUMBIA — A memorial service for Dr. John O’Neil, III, former chairman of the Department of Art, University of South Carolina, will be held Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at 4 p.m. in the Rutledge Chapel on the Horseshoe of the campus of the University. The family suggests that memorials may be made to The Columbia Museum of Art or to the University of South Carolina Department of Art.
Born in New York City, the son of John Joseph O’Neil, Jr. and Elizabeth Grady O’Neil, Dr. O’Neil, 72, father of four, artist, teacher, athlete and Distinguished Professor Emeritus, died Sunday, December 12, 2004, after a brief illness.
In 1963, Dr. O’Neil came to the University as an assistant professor of design and was head of the Art Department from 1973 until 1995. After retirement, he continued to serve USC as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus until his death. Dr. O’Neil was a prolific painter and ceramicist throughout his career, most recently having shown his work in Columbia this past November.
Dr. O’Neil was an avid sportsman and sports fan. He enjoyed following USC sports and his children’s athletic endeavors. He was an accomplished golfer and a nationally ranked squash player, having won several championships in squash at the University.
After graduation from New York State University at Brooklyn with a degree in Graphic Design and Photography, Dr. O’Neil served in the Army during the Korean War as a photographer and senior lab technician from 1952-54. Upon his return to the United States, he worked as a graphic designer for several businesses in New York City, including the Mutual Broadcasting Company and Time-Life, Inc. He also continued his education at Hunter College and Columbia University in New York, and received a second undergraduate degree from New York State University at Buffalo in 1959. He continued his studies at Columbia University, from which he obtained a Masters in Art Education and, later, a Masters of Fine Arts at the University of Florence, Florence, Italy and a doctorate in Design Education from Columbia University.
Also after his return to the United States from Korea, he began teaching art, first at the elementary grade level and later in high school near his home in New York City. He also worked in New York as a graphic designer, his work appearing in such publications as Life, Sports Illustrated, Time, Look, Fortune, U.S. News and World Report, Newsweek, Printers Ink, The New York Times, New York Herald Tribune, and Architectural Digest.
After coming to the University, he served as Associate Chair of the Department of Art and director of Undergraduate Studies from 1968 until 1973. He also served a number of organizations promoting local and national artists, including serving as president and on the executive committee of the Artist Guild of Columbia, as chairs of a number of committees for the Columbia Museum of Arts and Sciences, including the Membership Committee, the Acquisitions Committee and the committee for the Monet Acquisition. He also served on the Columbia Museum’s Board of Trustees and its Board of Visitors. He was on the executive committee of the Guild of South Carolina Artists, was a founding member and executive committee member of South Carolina Craftsman, and was a founding member, executive board member and past president of the Southern Graphics Council.
Dr. O’Neil’s work has appeared in a number of exhibitions around the state and nationally, including at the Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville, SC; the Mint Museum in Charlotte; St. Paul’s Cathedral Gallery, New York City; Florence Museum, Florence, SC; Southeastern Museum of Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, NC; Hunter Museum of Art, Chattanooga, TN; Center for Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; Works on Paper, University of Georgia, Athens, GA; Irene Leache Memorial Exhibition, Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, VA; and at the High Museum, Atlanta, GA.
Many awards were bestowed upon Dr. O’Neil for his work, including by the Vincent Price Invitational Exhibition at the South Carolina Arts Commission; Gibbes Art Gallery in Charleston; Florence Museum in Florence, SC; Furman University, Greenville, SC; Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, VA; Augusta College, Augusta, GA; and by South Carolina Craftsman, Columbia. His work remains in a number of private collections and in several museums, including at Furman University, the South Carolina Arts Commission, Springs Mills in Lancaster, SC, Bank of America in Columbia, Wachovia Bank in Charleston, the Beaufort Museum in Beaufort, SC, Columbia University in New York City, the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, VA, and the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia.
Dr. O’Neil was predeceased by his first wife, Iris Bird O’Neil, mother of his three oldest children. He is survived by his four children, Ginny McKnight of Orlando, FL; Johnny O’Neil of Bloomington, IN; and Tommy O’Neil of Orlando, FL; and Robin O’Neil of Columbia,; his former wife, Robin Harmon O’Neil of Columbia; his sister, Mary O’Neil Denman of Pampano Beach, FL; and four grandchildren.
