Brian K. Shorter

Brian Kelly Shorter, 39, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, in Savannah, Ga.

Mr. Shorter was born May 8, 1968, in Sumter, a son of Henry B. “H.B.” Shorter Jr. and Florence “Judy” Garrington Shorter. He was a truck driver for Plumbline Trucking. He loved automobiles and motorcycles and was an avid Gamecocks fan. He loved home and family. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his parents of Sumter are one brother, Ronald Booth (Tammy) Shorter of Manning; and a nephew, Joshua Booth Shorter.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.P. Garrington and Mr. and Mrs. Booth Shorter, and a close friend, Jimmy Hughes.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Keith Burgess officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were Kenny Kolb, Andy Hodge, Kevin Hodge, Bill Dennis, Duvon Herrington and Jim Russell.

Memorials may be made to Free Will Baptist Home for Children, 5232 Turbeville Highway, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Simms

Ruby Elizabeth Martin Simms, 89, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning after a long illness.

Born June 23, 1918, in Rutherfordton, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Abner Grady Martin and Leo Thorne Martin. Mrs. Simms was a former resident of Greenville and spent her last 60 years in Summerton, a place she loved and where she had many friends. She had retired after more than 30 years as an accountant and office manager at Elliott Lumber Co. and Elliott Sawmilling Co.

She was a longtime member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church, with much involvement in fundraising for the Bazaar, the Oyster Roast and other activities of the Episcopal Church Women. She enjoyed her membership in the Pink Dogwood Garden Club. For many years, she was involved in the Sumter County Concert Series.

An active Republican, Mrs. Simms served for many years as secretary and treasurer of the Clarendon County Republican Party, was on numerous occasions elected as a delegate to the state Republican Convention and in 1998 was honored for her many years of dedicated service. In addition, she enjoyed membership in the American Legion Auxiliary and the William Gilmore Simms Society.

Mrs. Simms is survived by her daughters, Betty Simms Hise of Jackson, Miss., and Anne Simms Pincus of New Orleans, La., to whom she was deeply devoted and whose devotion to her was beyond measure. Other survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Carlton Martin of Charlotte, N.C.; her sons-in-law, Daniel Hise and Ronald Pincus; four grandchildren, Rivers Hise Trahant of Mandeville, La., Simms Hise of Grafton, Mass., Alexander Pincus and Miles Pincus of New York, N.Y.; four great grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to her beloved nurse, Dorothy Huggins, for her dedication, care and companionship.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Summerton with the Rev. David W. T. Thurlow officiating.

Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the cemetery of the Church of the Holy Apostles Episcopal, 9457 Patterson St., Barnwell.

Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Parish Hall of St. Matthias Episcopal, 9 S. Duke St., Summerton.

Memorials may be made to either St. Matthias Episcopal Montessori Preschool, Summerton, S.C. 29148, or the William Gilmore Simms Chair of American Letters, University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C. 29208.

Inez A. Herlong

Inez Anderson Herlong, 91, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at her daughter’s home in Rock Hill. She was in the company and care of her family, who were assisted by the Hospice organization.

Born July 1, 1916, in Kershaw County, she was the daughter of the late Noah and Lavenia Branham Anderson. She was the widow of Henry Keller Herlong, who in 1953 founded Manning Tractor Co., a franchised John Deere dealership. She was a member of The Presbyterian Church at Manning and First Presbyterian Church of Rock Hill. Mrs. Herlong moved to Rock Hill in 1994 to live near her two daughters.

Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Herlong (Coty) Fishburne and her husband, and Gay Herlong (David) Hoffman, of Rock Hill; three sons, Henry Keller (Rita) Herlong Jr. of Salem, Ore., Robert Walter (Pat) Herlong of Atlanta, Ga., and William Gregg (Lynn) Herlong, of Manning; a sister, Jessie Anderson of Columbia; eight granddaughters, Deanne Herlong Nunn and Heidi Herlong Huff, both of Tulsa, Okla., Kristine Herlong Varn of Clinton, Patricia Herlong Dunlap of Columbia, Courtney Louise Herlong and Danielle Blair Herlong, both of Manning, Anne Celeste Fishburne of Charleston and Mary Cotesworth Fishburne of New York, N.Y.; and four great-grandsons.

Funeral services were held Monday in The Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating. Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Toy McCord, Bennie Keels, Kervin Whack, Bill McKenzie, Vikki Brogdon, Robert Strunk and David Koon.

Memorials may be made to The Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, SC 29102, or to First Presbyterian Church of Rock Hill, 234 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Joe Littles Jr.

Joe Littles Jr., 70, was called from labor to reward on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, at Providence Heart Institute, Columbia.

Born Sept. 18, 1937, in Sumter County, he was the son of Joe Littles Sr. and Rosa Lee Workman Littles.
He was also the husband of Elnora Williams Littles. His education commenced in the Sumter County public schools. He worked diligently for 20 years at Rea Construction. He was a devoted husband, supportive father, caring brother, loving grandfather and uncle. He was a man of great determination and faith. He was loved and admired by all that knew him because of his pleasant demeanor and humility towards others. God truly knew best when he took him into his home.

He was a member of Good Hope AME Church.

Left to lament his passing and bask in the glory of his life are a devoted wife, Elnora Littles; one son, Joseph Levi Littles; a grandson, Jerry Livingston Jr.; and a special niece and nephew, Shemeka Miller and Jamari Andino, all of the home; a special adopted grandson, Kenneth Kellogg of Rembert; six brothers and sisters, Mary McDaniel of Rembert, Sarah Louise (Vincent) Marshall of Hampstead, N.Y., Denise (Lionell) Jackson of Suitland, Md., Samuel (Lionell) Littles and Kenneth Littles, both of Washington, D.C., Dennis (Lorriane) Littles of Dalzell; 10 brothers-in-law, Washington Miller Jr., of Washington, D.C., Johnny Miller of Rembert, Herman (Millie) Miller of Suitland, William and Phillip Miller, both of Horatio, Theodore, Robert, Sammie, Peter, and Joseph Wright, all of Claremont; eight sisters-in-law, Evelina Williams of Rembert, Minnie Bradford of Clinton, Md., Evelyn Miller of Horatio, Deborah (Isiah) McDuffie of Sumter, Orbedella Wright, Lou Alice Singleton of Claremont, Pamela Wright of Orangeburg, Carolyn Asnah of Atlanta, Ga., Evelina Conyers of Summerton, Nannie Miller of Temple Hill, Md.; a son-in-law, Jerry Livingston Sr. of Sumter; two aunts, Elveta Ballard of Washington, D.C., and Sarah Dennis of Camden; two uncles, Johnny (Magnolia) Brown of Atlanta and Charles (Carrie) Williams of Rembert; a host of appreciative nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Renea Livingston.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, from The High Hills Baptist Church, Dalzell, with the Rev. Dr. Ellie W. Palmer, pastor, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Shirley M. Palmer, the Rev. Willie Wilson, the Rev. Linda Richbow and the Rev. Willie Dennis.

Floral Bearers were Mary Livingston, Marie Harris, Daphne Taylor, Sue Porchee, Birinie J. Brooks and Evelyn English.

Pallbearers were Jerry Livingston Sr., Charlie Livingston, Frankie Brunson, Joseph Crim, Henry Prioleau, William Miller and Phillip Miller.

Burial was in the High Hills Baptist Church Yard Cemetery, Dalzell.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Lena Marie Gardner White

BISHOPVILLE -- Lena Marie Gardner White, 61, wife of Davis A. White, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Born in Livingston County, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Robert Vroman and the late Rita Clark Vroman. She was a Summary Court judge in Dorchester County.

Survivors include her husband of Summerton; sons, Michael (Mariana) Gardner of Anderson, William Rex Gardner of Summerville and Davis A. (Dawn) White Jr. of Bishopville; daughters, Marie (Steve) Wolfensberger of Moncks Corner, Betsy (Herbie) Brown of Nesmith, Lee (Ryan) Mitchell of Augusta and Kay Baxley of Bishopville; two sisters, Bobbie (Pete) Hillier and Dorothy Corbin, all of New York; nine grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, in the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home chapel.

Burial was in the Bethlehem Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Medical University of South Carolina Liver Transplant Unit, 171 Ashley Ave., Charleston, S.C. 29425.

Bobby Evans Sr.

Bobby Evans Sr., 77, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born April 30, 1930, in the Foreston community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Ophelia Evans and the late Frank Evans. He received his formal education in the public schools of Manning. He was joined in holy matrimony to Cora King and to this union five children were born. He later met and married Rosa Lee Brailsford.

He was predeceased by a sister, Beulah Evans Singleton.

Those left to grow from his love and cherish his memory are: Cora King Evans of Manning and Rosa Evans of the home; three sons, the Rev. Emmanuel (Diane) Evans, Archie Evans and Bobby Evans, all of Manning; two daughters, Edna Evans of Manning and Gladys Evans of Sumter; four sisters, Helen Dozier, Frankie Leftwich, Lue Bertha Evans and Evelyn Evans, all of New York; two brothers, Nathan Evans of Manning and Frank Roy Evans of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, Matthew Dozier and Joseph Singleton, both of Manning; six stepchildren, Gregory (Mary) Brailsford, Lindell (Janice) Wright of Manning, Doris (Buster) Bennett, Tyrone (Celestine) Wright of the home, Otis Wright and Joyce (Albert) Smith of Sumter; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Dequan, Trevon, Daneshia (Darius), Latoya (Ray), Tyrone (Heather) all of Manning, Latonya (Jamie), Deserick and Lekenla of the home; four great-grandchildren, Shanisty, Atajamil, Jamie and Zaykyan, all of the home; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Evans were held on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at William Chapel Christian Church in Manning with the Rev. Emmanuel Evans officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Sue Richburg

Dorothy Sue Richburg, 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at National Healthcare of Sumter.

Born Nov. 27, 1929, in Florence, she was a daughter of the late Oscar P. and Sue Richbourg Richburg. She retired after 35 years as a sales clerk at Belk Deptartment Store in Manning. She was a member of Jordan United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Colleen R. Kennedy and Lila Jean Richburg, both of Manning; a brother, Oscar P. Richburg Jr. of Georgetown; and a number of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and a great-great-niece.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Freddie Richburg, Basil Richburg and Ernest E. Richburg.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, in Jordan United Methodist Church with the Rev. Devere Williams and the Rev. Debra Quilling officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lamar Kennedy, Jay Carter, Jody Ard, David Casselman, Marty James and Archie Stukes.

Memorials may be made to Jordan United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Colleen Bochette, Treasurer, 2048 Bethleham Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Charles R. Warner Jr.

Charles Robert “Bobby” Warner Jr., 46, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at his home.

Born Nov. 20, 1961, in Fort Campbell, Ky., he was a son of Charles Robert Warner and the late Marilyn J. Randall Warner. He was a computer engineer.

Surviving besides his father of Summerton are two sisters, Charline Rose Warner-Kirven of Darlington and Christine Rita Franklin and her husband, Brian, of Florence.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Clemson University Athletic Dept., P.O. Box 31, Clemson, S.C. 29633.

William Andrew Murphy

William Andrew Murphy, 50, husband of Billie Marie Lowder Murphy, died Saturday, December 8, 2007, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Born July 12, 1957, in Charleston, he was a son of Norman Author Murphy and Caroline Sineath Girouard. He was a retired auto mechanic, a United States Army veteran, and a member of Summerton Baptist Church.

Surviving are his mother of Johns Island; father of Cross; wife of Summerton; a daughter, Kristie Murphy of Summerton; two sons, Joshua Leon and Brandon Murphy of Summerton; four sisters, Carol Clark and Arlean Burt of Cross, Dolly Gay of Goose Creek, and Pam Mauldin of Ladson; two brothers, Norman Murphy of Tennessee and Eugene Girouard of Johns Island; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 10, 2007, in Summerton Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rob Pierce officiating.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Baptist Church, P. O. Box 98, Summerton, S.C. 29148.
