Charles L. Hill Sr.

Charles Lewis “Charlie” Hill Sr., 67, husband of Patricia “Pat” Moye Hill, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at the VAMC in Charleston.

Born Dec. 5, 1939, in Charlotte, N.C., he was a son of the late Willard Meinardi and Bertie Mae Hill.

He was a retired landscaper and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Alcolu.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a daughter, Suzanne (Benjie) Brown of Manning; two sons, Charles Lewis “Chuck” (Kim) Hill Jr. of Manning and Joseph Robert “Joey” (Joy) Hill of Summerville; four brothers, Willard Hill of Goose Creek, Daniel Hill and Steven Hill, both of Columbia, and Kenny Hill of Little Mountain; three sisters, Dianne Nesbitt of Columbia, Becky Chilcox of Charlotte and Betty Anderson of Manning; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Charlie Brookshire officiating.

Burial followed in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Hyde, Danny Pack, Ricky Lee, Bill Coker, Johnny Burke, Terry Lee and Russell Wallace.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Greenville-Spartanburg NC-SC Office, 16-A Brozzini Court, Greenville, S.C. 29615, or the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Suite 300, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Jannie S. Johnson

Jannie Simmons Johnson, 92, widow of Sinclair Johnson Jr., entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Friday, Nov. 12, 1915, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac Simmons and Frances Nelson Simmons.

Mrs. Johnson was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a member of Mount Zion AME Church, Davis Station, and the Prince Hall Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she was awarded a 50-year membership certificate.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William “Dub” Johnson.

She leaves to cherish many memories and mourn her passing, two daughters, Mae Baynes of Summerton and Emma Frances Rhetta of Decatur, Ga.; eight sons, General Maceo Johnson of Boston, Mass., C. Thomas Johnson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Albertis Johnson of Summerton, Roland Johnson of Miami, Fla., Lee Ernest Johnson of Miramar, Fla., Hercules Johnson of Conyers, Ga., Deacon Postell “PJ” Johnson of Lithonia, Ga., and Anthony Johnson of Olathe, Kan.; a sister, Lucille Levy of Summerton; two brothers, James Simmons of Summerton and Mark Simmons of Ypsilanti, Mich.; 61 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, at historic Mount Zion AME Church, Davis Station, with the Rev. Dr. Willie J. Heggins II, pastor, officiating.

Final resting place was in the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Michael J. Kotula

Willowick, OHIO–¬Michael J. Kotula died Nov. 25, 2007, at his home in Willowick, Ohio. Born May 27, 1954, in Cleveland, he had lived in Euclid before moving to Willowick.

He was a member of St. Stephen’s Byzantine Church.

Survivors are his wife, Cindy (Kocisko) Kotula; daughter, Patty (Seth) Stewart of Walterboro, S.C.; sons, Tom and Dan; mother, Loretta (Turnbull) Kotula; and brother, Bob (Connie) Kotula.

He was predeceased by his father, Karl Kotula.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at St. Stephen’s Byzantine Church in Euclid, Ohio.

Burial followed in the All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.

Orlando-Donsante Funeral Home of Wickliffe, Ohio was in charge of the arrangements.

Ann W. Lee

Ann White Lee, 68, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, at a Florence hospital after an illness.

Born in Marion, she was a daughter of the late Thomas C. White Sr. and Laura Flowers White.

She attended Southeastern Seminary, where she received her associates of arts degree. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Turbeville, where she was a member of the Women’s Circle, the ladies Sunday school class and the sanctuary choir. Mrs. Lee was one of the original members of the Puddin’ Swamp Singers. She and her husband, the Rev. “Sonny” Lee, were awarded the Smyrna Service Award by First Baptist Church of Turbeville.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Isadore “Sonny” Lee of the home; a daughter, Wendy (Kenny) Yates of Turbeville; a son, Jeffrey David Lee of Florence; a sister, June White (Kenneth) Godbold of Marion; five brothers, Robert C. (Sandra) White and Glenn (Julia) White, all of Columbia, Dale (Shelby) White and Roy C. (Mary Gail) White, all of Marion, and Ray (Lois) White of Latta; three grandchildren, Carson Lee, David Michael Lee and Coleman Yates; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Thomas C. White Jr., Kenneth L. White, Herman T. White, Benny L. White and Jerry N. White.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at First Baptist Church of Turbeville.

Burial followed in the Magnolia Cemetery in Latta.

Memorials should be made to First Baptist Church of Turbeville.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Drs. Kate Smith and Dorn Smith and the MICU staff of Carolinas Hospital for their loving care of “Mrs. Ann” during her illness.

Miriam Morris

A. Miriam Morris, 67, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at a Winston-Salem, N.C., nursing facility after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Beasley Morris and Willa Mozelle Baird Morris. She was a member of Turbeville Southern Methodist Church and the Miriam Morris Adult Ladies Sunday School Class, which was named in her honor.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Thomas Morris.

She is survived by two sisters, Annette (Charlie) Barrett of Manning and Lois Ann (Dave) Breizy of Myrtle Beach, and three brothers, Tracy E. (Martha) Morris of Manning, Wayne (Shelia) Morris of Lexington and Ray (Kathy) Morris of Turbeville.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, at Turbeville Southern Methodist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Miriam Morris Sunday School Class, c/o Turbeville Southern Methodist Church, P.O. Box 233, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Joseph Nelson

Joseph Nelson, 74, husband of Sarah Gardner Nelson, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 26, 1933, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Julius and Rose Lee Rhames Nelson.

Mr. Nelson was a member since 1955 of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where he was one of the first drivers for the bus ministry and a member of the gospel choir and the food ministry. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952 and did tours of duty in Hawaii, Okinawa, Korea, Germany and Vietnam. For his services he was awarded the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service and Campaign medals, National Defense Service Medal, Parachutist Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and numerous other commendations. He also served as a parachutist in the 36th Airborne Division and retired from Fort Jackson as an executive chef after 22 years of service. Mr. Nelson was also an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 52 years, Sarah, of the home; three daughters, Gertrude Dunbar of Boynton Beach, Fla., Marcia Nelson of Columbia and Josephine Nelson (Leroy) Harriot of Woodbridge, Va.; three sons, Raymond Allen (Paulette) Nelson, Thomas Sidney (Kim Yun Ok) Nelson and James Edward (Audra) Nelson; a brother, Elijah (Elizabeth) Nelson of Sumter; a sister, Ola Mae Williams of Mullins; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwendolyn Nelson Parker; five brothers, Edward, Edgo, Millard, Gilbert and Moses; and four sisters, Rosa Lee, Ruth, Frizell and Rhunett.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Robert F. Stribling

SALUDA, N.C. – Robert Frank “Bob” Stribling, 89, formerly of the Putman community of Union County, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Saluda.

He was married for 69 years to the late Matrel O’Shields Stribling, who predeceased him Oct. 17. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Stribling was born in Pauline on May 23, 1918, a son of the late Lamar and Docia Wofford Stribling. He was a graduate of Pauline High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served with the Sea Bees. Mr. Stribling was retired from Napa Auto Parts as machine shop manager and was a member of American Legion Post 22. A member of Putman Baptist Church, he had served as a deacon, church treasurer, Sunday school teacher and training union director. He was also on the building and grounds committee.

Mr. Stribling is survived by two daughters, Helen S. (Dan) McInnis of Alcolu, and Connie S. (Terry) Kuykendall of Columbus, N.C.; his sister-in-law, Hazel O. (Bill) Babb of Buffalo; eight grandsons; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Stribling was predeceased by a son, Larry Stribling; five sisters, Etolia Vale, Ruby Cooper, Sallie Mae Ivy, Crystal McMeeken and Stella Stribling; and two brothers, Floyd Stribling and Wofford Stribling.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at Putman Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dennis Sherbert, Glenn Sherbert, Harold Gregory, Gerald Graham, Jimmy Sanders, Marshal O’Shields and Donald Babb.

Memorials may be made to Putman Baptist Church Building Fund, 3692 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, S.C. 29321.

S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home of Union was in charge of arrangements.

Bishop C. Wilson

Bishop C. Wilson, widower of Ella Peterson Wilson, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at Trident Medical Center, Charleston.

Born Dec. 24, 1920, in Gable, he was a son of the late George and Frances Wilson.

He accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Melina Presbyterian Church. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He was an excellent farmer and was also known as a welder and heavy-duty mechanic.

Survivors include a son, Lawrence Wilson of Gable, two sisters-in-law, Rosetta (Willie) Kennedy of Gable and Fannie Taylor of New York; two grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, at Melina Presbyterian Church in Gable, with The Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mary Hagen.

Memorials should be made to the Melina Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
