Chad J. Floyd

MYRTLE BEACH – Chad J. “Chaz Rocco” Floyd, 37, was called to eternal rest Dec. 10, 2005, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, after a long illness.

Born April 15, 1968, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Marsha Webster Baker of New Zion and Henry J. Floyd of Barrineau.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Ashton Webster of New Zion, and paternal grandparents, Herbert and Ida Mae Floyd of Barrineau.

He graduated from East Clarendon High School and attended Francis Marion University. He was former champion wrestler “Chaz Rocco” and co-owned the ACW Wrestling League and the Strand Tan Tanning Salon.

Besides his parents, Chaz is survived by his wife, Son H. Park Floyd; a son, Alex Floyd of Florence; a brother, Nicholas Lynn Floyd of Charlotte; a beloved grandmother, Virginia Webster of New Zion; a niece, Keena Floyd of Columbia; nephew, Brian Floyd of Barrineau; and special cousin, Renea Lowder of Lake City.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach.

Burial followed at New Zion Methodist Church Cemetery.

McMillan-Small Funeral Home and Crematory of Myrtle Beach was in charge of arrangements.

Jake Fulton

Jake Fulton, 94, widower of Virginia McFadden Fulton, died Dec. 12, 2005, at his home in Sardinia.

Born June 11, 1911, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Sidney B. Fulton Sr. and Rosa Cooper Fulton. He received his education from the Melina Parochial School. He was a lifelong member of Melina Presbyterian Church, serving on the trustee board, men’s council, and was a member of Golden Gate Masonic Lodge No. 78. He was a farmer and shared many of his vegetables.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Ruth Howard of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Shirley Marche of Manning and Ethel Echols of New Zion; two sisters, Marie Kennedy of Sardinia and Lottie Cooper of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 18 step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by six sisters, three brothers and two nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Melina Presbyterian Church, Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisting the Rev. Mary Rose Hagen.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Joseph Hill

Elder Joseph Hill, 85, husband of Viola Coulter Hill, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 16, 1920, in Charleston, Miss., the son of the late Jim Hill and Ethel Hill.

He received his formal education in Berkley County and was a 1950 graduate of South Carolina State College.

He was a member of Oakland Ave. Seventh Day Adventist Church for many years in Florence. After moving to Manning, he helped originate the Maranatha Seventh Day Adventist Church in 1979. He was a WWII veteran and a member of the VFW in Summerton. He was assistant Clarendon County Supervisor for Farmers Home Administration, courier for the Bank of Clarendon and chairman of Council on Aging.

Survivors include his wife, Viola Coulter Hill, of the home; two sons, James Hill of Manning, and Reginald (Cynthia) Hill of Birmingham, Ala.; two daughters, Beverly Hill of Manning, and Patricia (Stephan) Davis of Warner Robbins, Ga.; one brother, William (Dorothy) Hill of Monterey, Calif.; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at Berea Seventh Day Adventist Church in Sumter.

Officiating minister will be the Rev. Robert Green Jr., pastor, eulogist Elder Oliver McKinney, assisting Elder Heyward Singleton, Elder Joseph Taylor, Elder V.J. Mendinghall and Elder Willie Dupree.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery Park in Sumter.

Rhodenar Taylor

Rhodenar Taylor, wife of the late James Taylor, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at the Sumter Health and Rehab Center.

Born in Clarendon County, on Sept. 25, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Edd and Corina W. Taylor. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church USA. After moving to New York, she joined the Brown Memorial Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the usher board.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Julian Sharp; husband, James B. Taylor; and a sister, Minnie Dingle.

Survivors are a niece, Corina D. Fountain of Sumter; a nephew, Woodrow (Rebecca) Taylor of Bridgeport, Conn.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at the Palmer Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Willie Wilson officiating.
Interment followed at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Alcolu.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Doris Thames

Doris Oliver White Thames, 97, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, in National Healthcare of Sumter.

Born April 18, 1908, in Florence, she was a daughter of the late Harmon Jasper and Mary Magdalene White Oliver. She was first married to the late William Alsenia White and second to the late Harry Austin Thames. She was a graduate of Florence High School. She was retired former co-owner with her husband, William Alsenia White, of White’s Streamliner restaurant, one of the first in the United States to prepare steam-cooked foods. The tall tube that piped the steam from its kitchen is currently being used as a flagpole at Laurence Manning Academy. The Starlight Room of the restaurant was a meeting place for the Ministerial Association, Rotary Club, Jaycees, Lion’s Club, bridge clubs and other men’s and ladies’ civic organizations, and served many famous people from far and wide, since Hwy. 301 was the thoroughfare for Manning during that time. She was a former girls basketball coach at Manning High School, a member of the Wyboo Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of Santee Baptist Church, where she was a member of the WMU and a former children’s Sunday school teacher.

Surviving are two daughters, Doris Verdery of Orangeburg and Betty Jane Daniels of Manning; a daughter-in-law, Thelma White of Manning; a sister, Theresa Worrel of Florence; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Oliver “Billy” White.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Santee Baptist Church, c/o the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth, 1057 Davis St., Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Freewill Baptist Home for Children, P.O. Box 299, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Patricia Stewart

Patricia Tucker Stewart, 56, wife of Harry LeGrand Stewart Jr., died Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, at her home in Manning.

Born Oct. 14, 1949, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Seth Nathan and Vermelle Binnicker Tucker. She was a store manager and attended Home Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are three sons, Jeremy Wilson and Timothy Wayne Wilson, both of Texas, and Harry LeGrand Stewart III of Manning; two daughters, Tammy Marie Goode of Texas and Mary Nelle Rhea of Alcolu; three brothers, Nathan Tucker and Raymond Tucker of Manning and Chad Rodney Tucker of Rock Hill; five sisters, Yvonne Brown of Manning, Carolyn Geddings of Sumter, Dale Tucker, Sandy Spigner and Debbie Antwine all of Lake City; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov 23, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Fulton Lewis Goode Jr. officiating.

Burial followed in Price Cemetery in Manning.

Thelma C. Trammell

Thelma Ruth Cothran Trammell, beloved wife of William V. Trammell for 56 years, departed this life to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, Nov. 21, 2005. This came after several years of declining health, during which time she became an inspiration to both family and friends.

She was born Aug. 16, 1922, in the Possum Kingdom community of Greenville County to the late Christie F. and Eunice Uldrick Cothran.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Ramelle T. (Devon) Coker of Turbeville; three sons, Steve and Mark Trammell of Anderson, and Andy (Lil) Trammell of Coto de Caza, Calif.; a brother, Floyd Andrew (Midge) Cothran of Pelzer; two sisters-in-law, Sue and Sara Cothran of Williamston; eight grandchildren; three nephews and a niece.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, W. Frank Cothran and Christie F. Cothran Jr., of Williamston; and a grandson, Matthew T. Zimmerman of Sumter.

Mrs. Trammell grew up in Williamston where she graduated from Williamston High School. After that, she attended Draughn Business College. She later enrolled in Anderson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and received her RN in 1946. After pursuing post-graduate training in Galveston, Tex., she returned to Anderson and assumed the position of assistant director of nursing at Anderson Memorial Hospital where she remained until 1951. An astute businesswoman, she served as secretary-treasurer of Traco Steel Co., and Trammell Service Design for more than 25 years.

A longtime active member of First Presbyterian Church of Anderson, Mrs. Trammell was serving as elder, one of the first women to be so honored, at the time of her death. She participated in the first class of Stephen Ministers and served as a mentor to many. She was also a former Sunday school teacher and coordinated the clothing ministry for many years.

Her outstanding leadership activities in the community were many and varied throughout her active life. A lifelong animal lover, she was instrumental in the founding of the Anderson County Humane Society and assisted in raising funds to build the County Animal Shelter.

She was active in both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts and served as pack and troop leader. She also worked with the Laubach Literary Association, assisting adults in learning to read.

In politics, she worked tirelessly as a volunteer in many campaigns and was rewarded by witnessing the election of all levels from state to nation. She was one of the founders of the Anderson County Republican Women’s Club. Through her efforts the majority of the precincts in the county became organized. She was a delegate many times to county, district, state and national conventions. She served on the Anderson County Election Commission and had a part in overseeing the change from paper ballots to the use of ballot machines in the county. In addition, she was a trained Parliamentarian and offered her expertise in the field on many occasions. She was the recipient of the Rufus Keyes Award as the Outstanding Republican in the county in 1999 for all these worthy efforts.

In 2002, she and her husband were recognized by the Anderson County Council for their outstanding service to the Anderson community. Shortly before her illness, Mrs. Trammell became a volunteer at Hospice of the Upstate, giving a service from which she received much pleasure and reward.

Funeral services were held on Wedmesday, Nov. 23, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church, Anderson, by the Rev. Dr. B.E. Pettit and the Rev. Dr. Alan Elmore.

Interment followed in Old Silverbrook Cemetery, Anderson.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, S.C. 29621 or the First Presbyterian Church, 302 W. Whitner Street, Anderson, S.C. 29624.

Arrangements were provided by The McDougald Funeral Home.

Juanita B. Bullard

Juanita B. Bullard, 86, widow of William T. Bullard, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, in a Florence nursing center.
Born in Robbins, N.C., she was a daughter of the late William Thomas Brown and the late Betty Blanche Brown. Mrs. Bullard was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and was retired from Cover Manufacturing Co.

Surviving are two sons, William Larry (Pat) Bullard of Ladson, and Randy LeVan (Dawn) Bullard of Manning; three daughters, Betty B. Nordquist of Hartsville, Anita (Ed) King of Honea Path, DeLette (Burt) Jordan of Darlington; a daughter-in-law, Patti Shuler of Sumter; a sister, Willie Ballard of Rockingham, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Roger Dale Bullard, and a grandson, David Gilbert.

Graveside services were held on Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Morris Smith officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Roger Dale Bullard Memorial Scholarship Endowment in care of the University of South Carolina-Sumter, 200 Miller Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.
