Leo Robert Ey

Leo Robert Ey, 81, husband of Barbara Medlock Ey, died Monday, July 31, 2006.

Born July 19, 1925, in Fremont, Virginia, he was a son of the late William Charles and Lilly Rudd Ey. He retired after 42 years of service with the W. M. Ritter Lumber Company and Georgia Pacific Corporation. Mr. Ey served in the U. S. Army during WWII, and was a member, past deacon and elder of The Presbyterian Church at Manning.

He is survived by his wife of Manning; a son, J. Michael (Marion) Ey of Columbia; two daughters, Linda (Jim) Cronican of Birmingham, Alabama, and Marsha (Marshall) Sasser of Conway; six grandchildren, Amy Cronican and Rebecca (Paul) Strelow of Spartanburg, Matthew Cronican of Birmingham, John and Charles Proctor of Conway and Laney Ey of Columbia; two great grandchildren, Abby and Blake Strelow; and a brother Doug (Joyce) Ey of Huntington, West Virginia.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, in the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the S.C. Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2700 Middleburg Drive #240, Columbia, S.C. 29204, or to The Presbyterian Church at Manning, P. O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Curnell Gamble Sr.

CLINTON, Md. – Curnell Gamble Sr., 79, widower of Annie Wilson Gamble, died July 28, 2006, at Southern Maryland Hospital, Clinton.

Born June 27, 1927, in Winston-Salem, N.C., he was a son of the late Capers Gamble Sr. and Corena Samuels Gamble. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Manning Training School. He was a World War II veteran and was honorably discharged. He was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.

Survivors include four daughters, Elveria (Clifton) Wallace of Capital Heights, Md., Brenda Plater of District Heights, Md., Annie M. Parker and Vivian Gamble, both of Washington, D.C.; five sisters, Inez G. Mallett, Catherine (Edward) Stephens and Annie L. Gamble, all of Manning, Ida (Robert) Gumbs of Manhattan, N.Y., and Mary (Charles) Hickson of Capital, Md.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Curnell Gamble Jr.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon officiating, assisted by the Rev. Archie Fair, the Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat, the Rev. Cokley Richburg and Apostle John E. Wilson as eulogist.

Burial was in St. Matthews Cemetery, S.C. Highway 261.

Esther Habersham

BALTIMORE, Md. – Esther Martin Hammond Habersham, 81, widow of Andrew Hammond, died July 31, 2006, at Levindale Nursing Home, Baltimore.

Born Sept. 21, 1924, in the Wilson community of Man-ning, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Martin and Vera King Martin. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She furthered her education, graduating from S.C. Area Trade School in Denmark and attending the Community College of Baltimore, where she received a certificate in nursing. She attended William Chapel Church at an early age and later she joined the Christian Community Church of God in Baltimore. She retired from the Baltimore City Department of Aging. After returning home, she worked for the Clarendon County Council on Aging.

Survivors include one son, Andrew Hammond; four daughters, Valaria (Michael) Bynum, Stacia Hammond, Felicia Hammond and Janice (Tony) Andrew; a special daughter, Janice Leach; two brothers, Alphesus Martin and Charles Martin; two sisters, Luretha McMillian and Dorothy Easter; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a son.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at William Chapel Christian Church, Greeleyville Highway 521, Manning, with Rev. Emanuel Evans, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Dorothy F. Johnson

Mrs. Dorothy Felder Johnson, a former resident of Manning, the daughter of the late Walter and Hannah Abraham Felder and wife of James Johnson, died in Baltimore, Md., after a lengthy illness.

Dorothy was a relative of Harold Dupree, Leola McDuffie, the Felder and Samuels families of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at New Psalmist Baptist Church, Baltimore.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the William M. Brown Community Funeral Home, 1206 W. North Ave., Baltimore.

Evelyn S. Keith

Evelyn Sumpter Keith, 92, widow of Edward C. Keith Sr., died Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born April 20, 1914, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Jake David Sumpter and Ada Witherspoon Sumpter. She accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Ebenezer Missionary Baptist and served faithfully until her health failed, serving on the deaconess board and missionary society. She was also a member of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church. She taught at Loris Elementary School, Loris; Voorhees in Bamberg; and schools in Williamsburg County. She taught from 1937 to 1977 in St. Matthews and at Wilson Elementary and Manning Primary. She retired in 1977. She taught adult education to senior citizens. She was a member of Clarendon Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Clarendon Retired Teachers Association, Clarendon and Williamsburg Chapter and the National Chapter of the Council of Negro Women. She served on the Council of Aging Board, Wisteria Way Housing Complex and Wee Academy Child Care Center.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Edward C. (Robin) Keith Jr. of Sumter; one grandson reared in the home, Anthony Wallace; two daughters, Saundra A. Wallace of Manning and Gail (Attorney Matthew Gaines) Lambe of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one great-granddaughter reared in the home, Saundra E. Wallace of the home; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lottie Tresvant and Edythe Breland; and three brothers, Oliver, Turner and James Sumpter.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. George P. Windley Sr., pastor, officiating, the Rev. Mitchell Adger presiding, assisting the Rev. George P. Windley Jr., the Rev. Henry McCray and the Rev. Dr. Ashley Vaughn.

Burial was in the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were members of the Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge No. 99 and staff of Lake Marion Primary Care.

Floral bearers were members of the New Light Chapter Order of Eastern Star Lodge No. 254, missionary society and staff of Lake Marion Primary Care.

Charles Kelly

WEST COLUMBIA – Charles Benjamin Kelly, Sr., 79, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006.

Born in Manning, he was a son of the late John Marion and Mary Ridgill Kelly. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of West Columbia and was retired from the S.C. National Guard.

Mr. Kelly was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.

Survivors include his wife, Richardene Prince Kelly; son, Charles B. “Ben” Kelly, Jr., both of West Columbia; sister, Marian K. Thames of Manning; brother, Joe S. Kelly of Sumter; grandchildren, Blake M. Kelly and Rachel M. Kelly.

Funeral services were on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, in the First Baptist Church of West Columbia, officiated by Dr. Lonnie H. Shull, Jr., and Reverend Lawrence Ren Bray.

Interment followed at Southland Memorial Gardens.

Honorary Pallbearers were the Ready Sunday School Class.

Memorials may be made to “For Such A Time As This” at First Baptist Church of West Columbia, 400 State Street, West Columbia, S.C. 29169.

Gregory Antonio Mack Jr. and Gregory Malachi Mack

Gregory A. Mack Jr. and Gregory M. Mack died Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born in Columbia, they were the sons of Gregory A. Mack Sr. and Lashonda Myers Mack.

Survivors besides the parents of Sumter are paternal grandparents, Sharolyn M. Hill and Waddell (Flossie) Mack III of Sumter; maternal grandparents, James Myers and Jackolyn S. Myers of Sumter; paternal great-grandparent, Waddell Mack Sr. of Sumter; maternal great-grandparents, Bonnie K. Hawkins and Waldon Hawkins of Tallahassee, Fla. and Celestine Myers of Alcolu; two sisters, Alashia Ja’nya Myers and Sakiyah Nytrella Brown; one brother, Zalyn Ty’shawn Myers; a maternal great-great-grandmother, Annie Lou Smith of Columbia.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Raymond Woods officiating.

Burial followed in the Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

Edith G. Martin

Edith Mable Gamble Martin, 85, died Monday, July 31, 2006, at Kingstree Nursing Home in Kingstree.

Born March 28, 1921, she was the adopted daughter of the late Joseph Edward and Maud Irene Gamble. She was a 1936 graduate of Greeleyville High School, where she was valedictorian of her graduating class. She then attended and graduated from Greenville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Greenville. Mrs. Martin was a registered nurse for more than 45 years. She worked at various hospitals in South Carolina during her career, including Roper, Georgetown Memorial, Charleston Memorial and Clarendon Memorial. She was also employed in the private practice of the late Dr. A.C. Bozard in Manning for a number of years. She was honored as S.C. Nurse of the Year in 1982. She was a member of Greeleyville Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Edith M. Martin of Manning and Greeleyville; special niece, Alice Cannon Crawford of Bonneau; a sister, Ruth Singletary Rodgers Cox of Scranton, and her children, Jimmy Rodgers and Becky Cook of Lake City and Libby McFadden of Cades.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 2, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Grover Mixon officiating.

A private family burial will be held at a later date in Mount Hope Cemetery in Greeleyville.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of S.C., 1817 Gadsden St., Columbia, S.C. 29201-2392 or to Greeleyville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 276, Greeleyville, S.C. 29056.

Isaac McConico

Isaac “Otis” McConico, 69, husband of Dorothy Thames McConico, died Friday, July 28, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Dec. 20, 1936 in Rimini, he was a son of the late Jeff and Cornelia McConico. Mr. McConico was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County.

He was preceded in death by a son, Issac McConico Jr.

Those left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory are his wife, Dorothy Thames McConico of the home; three daughters, Lizzian Benjamin, Albertha (Robert) Canty of Pinewood, and Tosheba (Lee) Snider of Columbia; a son, John Clifton McConico of the home; four sisters, Ruby McConico of Pinewood, Gladys Romeo of Sumter, Inez (Leo) Jones of North Carolina, and Geraldine McWalters of Philadelphia, Pa.; three brothers, June Romeo, Jerry Romeo and Lawrence Green, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; five sisters-in-law, Novella Purvis of Pinewood, Carrie Peterson and Ida (Joe) Collins, both of Sumter, Janie McWhite of Miami, Fla. and Mary (Woodrow) Levy of Florida; six brothers-in-law, Ruben (Teen) Huggins, James (Ruth) Thames, Harry Lee Thames of Florida, Mark Huggins of Summerton, Luke Thames and Johnnie (Betty Jean) Thames, both of Pinewood.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at St. John Baptist Church in Pinewood. Services were officiated by the Rev. Joe Gamble.

Burial followed in St. John Memorial, Eagerton Road, Pinewood.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Samuel Roberson

RAMONA, Calif. – Samuel “Cullie” Roberson, 72, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 25, 2006, in Ramona. He was preceded in death and is now with his loving wife of 51 years, Frances R. Roberson.

Born Aug. 3, 1933, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Jesse F. Roberson and Mary O. Driggers Roberson Brown. Cullie started his naval career in 1951, retiring from active duty in 1983 as master-chief aviation ordnance-man. He immediately returned to civil service work and retired from public service on June 30, 2006. Cullie enjoyed farming and raising livestock.

Surviving are his sons and their spouses, Dale (Sandy) Roberson, Steven (JoAnn) Roberson, and Bill (Sue) Roberson; daughter, Peggy (Dan) Mawson; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many loving friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Layton Roberson, and sister, Dell Hiott.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Brian Peake officiating.

Burial was in the Mayesville Black River Cemetery with full military honors.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.
