Bobbie Jean M. Byrd

Bobbie Jean Mothershed Byrd, 78, widow of John C. Byrd Jr., entered eternal rest Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, at the home of her daughter in Turbeville.

Born June 20, 1928, in Lancaster, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Etta Shehane Mothershed. She accepted Christ at an early age and remained faithful throughout her life. She was a pillar of strength and guidance for her family and was a member of First Baptist Church in Turbeville.

Surviving are a son, Harold Glen Byrd of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Pamela Ann (Jerry) Driggers of Turbeville and Debbie B. Shepp of Turbeville; a brother, Luther C. Mothershed of Lancaster; seven grandchildren, J. Richard Byrd and Jody G. Byrd of Turbeville, Jason Byrd of Columbia, Jennifer Goldman of Lynchburg, Lisa Lind of Timmonsville, Joni Skipper of Birmingham, Ala., and Michael B. Byrd of Los Angeles; eight great-grandchildren; two special caregivers, Virginia Gandy of Gable and Mary Butler of Manning; and a very devoted family member, Ronald Shepp, whom she loved as her son.

She was preceded in death by a son, Victor L. Byrd; and a brother, William Mothershed.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, in Turbeville First Baptist Church Cemetery on U.S. 301 with the Rev. Derrick Fort officiating.

Memorials may be made to Agape Community Hospice, 3503 W. Turbeville Highway, Lake City, S.C. 29560.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Albertha Lee M. Gamble

NEW ZION – Albertha Lee “Tee” McCray Gamble, 69, wife of William “Bill” Gamble, died July 22, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Aug. 8, 1936, in Olanta, Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Luke McCray and Robertha Rush McCray. She received her education in the public schools of Florence County. She accepted Christ as her Savior and joined New Jerusalem Baptist Church and later joined Greater St. Stephens Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband, William “Bill” Gamble of the home, include three sons, Gary Lee (Mona) Rush of New Canton, Va., James Allen (Corine) Rush of Stuart, Fla. and Audrey (Ruby Lee) Rush of New Zion; one stepson, William Nathaniel McFadden of Paterson, N.J.; one daughter, Wanda Ilene Rush McFadden of Dalzell; three stepdaughters, Jackie Gamble and Wanda Farriel, both of Atlanta, Ga., and Janet (Chris) McCoy of Sumter; one brother, Elmore McCray of Boynton Beach, Fla.; five sisters, Idus McCray, Minnie Mae Nero and Elizabeth Singletary, all of Olanta, Mary Etta Graham of Lake City and Rose Emma McKenzie of Scranton; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 28, 2006, at Greater St. Stephens Baptist Church, Lake City, with the Rev. Samuel Burgess, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Rest Lawn Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Richard Green Jr.

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Mr. Richard “Crick” Green, Jr., 45, husband of Dorothy Stukes Green, of 700 Cedar Lane Drive in Thomasville, entered into eternal rest Thursday, July 27, 2006, at Thomasville Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County on June 18, 1961, he was the son of the late Richard and Inez Gaymon Green.

Richard was converted at an early age and attended the Mount Pleasant UME Church. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter and Clarendon Counties and was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. After graduation, Richard relocated to Thomasville, N.C., where he was employed with Ralph Frameworks of High Point, N.C.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Richard A. Green and Shipery O. Stukes of Thomasville; two daughters, Altoya Nelson of Rhode Island, N.Y., and Genequa S. Green of Thomasville; four brothers, Wilbert (Geraldine) Green of Manning; Isham (Helen) Canty of Pinewood; Stacey (Sheri) Green of Thomasville and Michael Green of Paxville; eight sisters, Martha (Joseph) Green of Pinewood, Mary Green of Sumter, Camilla (Ransom) Richardson and Cassie (Gerald) Mitchell, both of Thomasville, Loretta Green and Cynthia Bosier, both of Summerton, Tameka (Gussie Jr.) Thames of Manning and Sarah (Michael) James of Thomasville; and one grandson, Jashaun Stukes of Thomasville.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at Mount Pleasant UME Church with the Rev. Barry Gadson, Pastor, the Rev. Willie Green, eulogist, the Rev. Ollie Hannah and the Rev. Dorothy Thames, officiating.

Internment followed at the Mount Pleasant UME Church Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary A. Haley

Mary Alma “Meme” Haley, 84, widow of H.W. “Mosser” Haley, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, at Palmetto Health Baptist in Columbia.

Born June 13, 1922, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late William A. and Maggie Hamilton Barfield. She was a retired nurse’s aide at Clarendon Memorial Hospital and a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Frances Morris and Gloria Lowder of Manning; two sons, Charles (Cecile) Haley of Elloree and Cobert A. Haley of Manning; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ashley Haley; two daughters, Ellen Haley and Dianne Haley; and a granddaughter, Cheryl Haley Dantzler.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 30, 3006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Bennie Turner and the Rev. Larry Hughes officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons, C.E. Haley Jr., Butch Lowder, Bryan Morris, Charles Wilkes, Beau Wilkes, and Shawn Dantzler.

Memorials may be made to the Free Will Baptist Home for Children, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162 or to Elloree First Baptist Church, c/o Team Kids or Youth Group, P.O. Box 387, Elloree, S.C. 29047.

Betty B. Minor

BRONX, N.Y. – Betty Britton Minor, 53, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at Bronx Lebanon Hospital in Bronx.

Born July 23, 1953, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Vander Britton and Evelyn McFadden Britton.

Mrs. Britton received her formal education in the public schools of New York City. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Lewis Minor. This union was blessed with five children.

Those left to celebrate her life and cherish her legacy are her four daughters, Amy Britton Flores, Claudette Britton, Dominique Britton and Dorthea Britton, all of Bronx; a son, Donald Joey Britton of Bronx; five sisters, Lucy Carter of Summerton, Victoria Brunson of Yonkers, N.Y., Joann Britton, Ann Britton and Cora Kinble, all of Bronx; two brothers, Thome Britton of Summerton and Vander Britton Jr. of Bronx; five grandchildren, Aaron Majestic Britton, Donald Joey Britton Jr., Aaliyah Victoria Flores, Brandon Messiah Britton and Jalen Tariq Harmon, all of Bronx; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Britton were held on Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Taw Caw Baptist Church in Summerton. Services were officiated by the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Charlie N. Nesbitt

Charlie Nathaniel Nesbitt’s life came to an end Saturday, July 22, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

A son of the late James and Venus Nesbitt, he was born in Clarendon County, on April 30, 1910. Mr. Nesbitt received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. Early in life, he was converted and joined New Hope AME Church, where he worked faithfully and served in various capacities.

He was first married to the late Bernice Johnson, and this union was blessed with one child. He later met and married the late Mary Jane Bracey, and this union was blessed with 10 children.

Loving memories of Mr. Nesbitt will be cherished by his children: seven sons, Charlie Lee Nesbitt and Matthew (Edna) Nesbitt, both of Thomasville, N.C., Robert (Estell) Brown, James (Deborah) Nesbitt, Melvin Nesbitt, Franklin (Minister Betty) Nesbitt and David Nesbitt, all of Pinewood; eight daughters, Mazzie N. Shannon, Mae Belle Nesbitt, Catherine (Christopher) Polk, all of Pinewood, Thelma (Johnny) Martin of Columbia, Mary Nesbitt of Thomasville, N.C., Martha Oliver of Baltimore, Md., Almeta Taylor and Alethia Harvin, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Raymond McGill; three sisters-in-law, the Rev. Cammie Mitchell, Marie Johnson and Sadie McGill; a devoted granddaughter, Delois Conyers; 33 additional grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at New Hope AME Church in Pinewood with the Rev. Nathaniel Edwards, pastor, assisting the Rev. Tommy Nesbitt, the Rev. Linwood Nesbitt and Bishop W.T. English.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of these arrangements.

Lillian B. Ridgeway

Lillian Bertha Ridgeway, 76, widow of Charlton Ridgeway, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born Dec. 22, 1929, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Dewey and Ethel Ridgeway White. She was a retired restaurant manager and a member of Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Gloria (Archie) Coker of Manning; a son, C. Sam Bingham of Spartanburg; three brothers, Julius (Martha) White of Greeleyville, Don White of Coward and Edward (Joan) White of Prattville, Ala.; three grandchildren, Christen Bingham, Bud Coker and Janeen Coker; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack White; and two sisters, Dorothy Strange and Lois Roseberry.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 28, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Morris Smith and the Rev. Steve McCutcheon officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Vonnie Ridgeway, Rhett Floyd, Gus Davis, Carl Posey, Robert Strange and Steve Felder.

Memorials may be made to Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 391, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Ollie Mae B. Roberts

Ollie Mae Bowman Roberts, 91, widow of the late Ezily Roberts, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility, Summerton.

Born Aug. 20, 1914, in Davis Station, she was the daughter of the late John Bowman and Binkie Stukes Bowman.

She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her savior and joined Laurel Hill AME Church, where she was a lifelong member and served on the senior choir.

Survivors include one daughter, Hazel “Ree” Roberts of Manning; and one brother, the Rev. Eugene (Dora) Bowman of Manning.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 30, 2006 at Laurel Hill AME Church in Davis Station.

Burial was in Hopkins Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

Preston Robinson

Preston Robinson, 90, husband of Rebecca Mouzon Robinson, died July 24, 2006, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital, Kingstree.

Born Nov. 23, 1915, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Wallace Robinson and Louvenia Mack Robinson. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and he was a member of Pine Grove AME Church. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge.

Survivors include two sons, Willie James (Lurean) Robinson of Greeleyville and Nathaniel (Patricia) Robinson of Greeleyville; reared in the home as his own, Alexander (Barbara) Simon of Manning; daughter-in-law, Carrie Robinson of Philadelphia, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four children and four sisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Pine Grove AME Church with the Rev. Moses J. Wilson officiating and the Rev. Shirley Waiters and the Rev. Elouise Pompey.

Burial was in Pine Grove AME Church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home was in charge of services.
