Rosa R. Gibson

Rosa Robinson Gibson entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 17, 2006, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.

Born in Summerton, on May 20, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Cumpsey and Janie Fordham Robinson. She was the widow of Leroy Gibson. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she became a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters, and a son, Louis Keels.

She leaves to grow from her memories, a daughter, Aretha Huggins of the home; a son whom she reared as her own, Jarratt Jackson; four brothers, Cumpsey, Samuel, Moses and C.B. Robinson, all of Detroit, Mich.; two sisters, Jamie Carter and Annie Ruth Robinson, both of Summerton; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a goddaughter, Nancy Gibson of Summerton; a special nephew, Micheal Green; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 22, 2006, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Final resting place was in the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

James Lawson

QUEENS, N.Y. – James “Bubba Son” Lawson, 78, husband of Mattie McDonald Lawson, died July 12, 2006, as the result of an automobile accident.

Born Nov. 27, 1927, in the Spring Hill section of Summerton, he was a son of Ashley Lawson and Annie Black Lawson and stepson of the late Annie Liza Morris Lawson. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Spring Hill AME Church, where he accepted Christ as his Savior. He retired from Jersey City Paper Mill.

Survivors besides his wife, Mattie McDonald Lawson of Summerton, include three sons, Henry Lawson, Ronald Lawson and Jerome Lawson; five daughters, Jervinc (Johnnie) Jones, Maegretta (Rodney) Williams, Mattie Mae (the Rev. Willie L.) Lawson, Essie Mae (Levy) Hammett and Lelia Lawson; five brothers, Elliot Lawson, Wilbur Lawson, Louis Lawson, Donald (Joyce) Lawson and Henry (Arlene) Lawson; three sisters, Juanita Bennett, Easter Mae Lawson and Naomi (Thomas) Cobb; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 23, 2006, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Bobby McDonald, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Beulah Lee McCray

Beulah Lee McCray, 81, died July 15, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born May 12, 1925, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late James McCray Sr. and Sylvia Gaymon McCray and stepdaughter of the late Della Starks McCray.

Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County, and she was a member of Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her devoted nephew, Robert Sr. (Phosia) McCray of Paxville.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Presley, the Rev. Terry Johnson and Minister Lillian Wright.

Burial was in the Mount Zero Baptist Church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Wendell C. Moore

PINEWOOD – Wendell C. “W.C.” Moore died Friday, July 14, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Moore was born March 11, 1935, in Clarendon County. He was a son of the late Robert Moore and Mary James Moore Carraway. He was also the stepson of the late Fred Carraway.

Mr. Moore received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He accepted Christ in his youth and joined Antioch Union Methodist Episcopal Church, where he served faithfully until his health failed. He was a member of the trustee board, the usher board, the gospel choir and the male chorus. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was the bass singer for the Golden Stars Quartet. In 1992, Mr. Moore retired from employment with the South Carolina Department of Highways and Public Transportation, Maintenance Division. He was a member of the International Masons, Pride of Sumter Lodge No. 35. Mr. Moore was also an avid fisherman.

Mr. Moore was joined in holy wedlock to the former Daisy M. Taylor, to which this union two children were born.

Cherished memories of his life will be shared by his wife, Daisy M. Moore; three sons, Willie Junious of Pinewood, Dwight C. Moore of Sumter, and Leon Davis of New Jersey; two daughters, Celeste Moore of Columbia and Georgianne Davis of Spring Valley, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Brenda J. Thomas and her husband, the Rev. Charlie Thomas of Sumter; two sisters, Josephine Richardson and her husband, Ransom, and Ruth J. James of Brunswick, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Moore was preceded in death by a son, Linwood Richardson; his parents; his stepfather; two brothers, Paul Moore and Silas Moore; and a niece reared in the home, Margaret Carraway Gamble Smoot.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at Antioch UME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, assisting the Revs. Roosevelt Boyd, presiding elder of the UME Church, Richard James, Charlie Thomas, Saymon James and Dr. James Blassingame.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Antioch UME Trustee Board, P.O. Box 427, Pinewood, S.C. 29125 or to Ascension Hospice, P.O. Box 3077, West Columbia, S.C. 29171.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of these arrangements.

Kathleen J. Russell

Kathleen Jancel Russell, 59, wife of Edward Russell, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born Aug. 2, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Penn., she was a daughter of the late Anthony Jancel Sr. and the late Rose Theresa Zagwoski Jancel. She was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and attended Wyboo Community Church.

She is survived by her husband of Manning; a daughter, Melissa (Scott) Witkosky of Diamond, Ohio; a son, John (Danielle) Russell of Manchester, Ohio; two brothers, Richard Jancel of Alliance, Ohio, and Robert Jancel of Canton, Ohio; two sisters, Marjorie Kober of Pennsylvania and Rose Fischer of Gibsonia, Pa.; and four grandsons.

A memorial service was held on Friday, July 21, 2006, in Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Thomas Kingsley officiating.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, P.O. Box 395, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Julia G. Salter

Julia G. Mazur Salter, 67, wife of the Rev. Charlie S. Salter, passed away peacefully at her home in Manning surrounded by her family on Monday, July 17, 2006.

Born Feb. 13, 1939, in New Kensington, Penn., she was a daughter of the late Andrew Paul and Violet Gertrude Weister Mazur. She was a member of Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church; a licensed minister of music in the Pentecostal Holiness Church Conference; served on the S.C. Conference Women’s Ministries Board as a board member and vice president; S.C. Conference GEM’s board as an assistant director; district director of WM in several districts; and the 4-K teacher of Manning First Baptist Church. Mrs. Salter was a church pianist and organist.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are a son, Jeffery Scott “Scotty” (Lori) Salter of Lexington; two daughters, Julia Lynn (the Rev. Morris) Smith of Manning and Dawn Reneé (Dr. John N.) Odom of Mullins; two brothers, Paul (“Peg”) Mazur of Eaton Rapids, Mich., and Robert Andrew (Janice) Mazur of Summerville; two sisters, Janice Elaine (Victor) Fisk of Apollo, Penn., and Kay (Joe) Norris of Darlington; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 20, 2006, at the H.P. Robinson Memorial Auditorium in Lake City with the Rev. M. Donald Duncan officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jimmy McKenzie and the Rev. Morris Smith.

Burial followed in Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joe Norris, Brian Norris, Jason Norris, Arnie Litchfield, Paul Wilson and Pete Kafer.

Honorary pallbearers were the ministers and spouses of the S.C. Pentecostal Holiness Church Conference.

Memorials may be made to Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1157 Seminole Drive, Manning, S.C. 29102; to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge; the Gideon’s International; or Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 391, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Gary B. Shaffer

Gary B. Shaffer, 56, husband of Corliss Jenkins Shaffer, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, he was a son of the late Clifford C. Shaffer and the late Alice Jackson Shaffer. Mr. Shaffer was a member of the First Church of God and a member of the Sumter Masonic Lodge. He was a retired manager of Wal-Mart.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Blair (Kim) Shaffer of Manning and Chris (Jill) Shaffer of Sumter; a daughter, Teri Ann (Tommy) Nash of Sumter; 11 grandchildren who affectionately called him “Poppy,” Cayce Shaffer, Kaitlan Shaffer, Kristin Shaffer, Keri Shaffer, Kamryn Shaffer, Mary Kate Shaffer, Morgan Shaffer, Benjamin Shaffer, Brantley Nash, Karleigh Nash and McKinlie Nash; a special adopted grandson, Richard Floyd; four brothers, Clifford Shaffer of Virginia, David Shaffer of Cowpens, Eddie Shaffer of New York and Dale Shaffer of Michigan; a sister, Jody Lurch of Georgia; and special friends, Mike Cotterman, Randy Dow and Billy Martin.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 21, 2006, in the First Church of God with the Rev. Ron Bower and the Rev. Aaron Ferry officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mike Cotterman, Stephen Cotterman, Robert Cotterman, David Peek Jr., Brian Anderson and Ted Hardy.

Memorials may be made to the First Church of God, 1835 S.C. 521 North, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Sophie K. Stephens

Sophie Elmina Kennedy Stephens, 98, widow of Jessie H. Stephens, died Monday, July 17, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born June 2, 1908, in Greeleyville, she was a daughter of the late John Walter and Pinkie Fleming Kennedy. She was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church and was honored by Sons of Confederate Veterans for her 98th birthday.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Eli, Wilbur and Rembert Kennedy; and one sister, Rilla Wright.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Dr. Rodney Foster officiating.

Burial followed in Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Randall Wright, Rem Kennedy, Charles Kennedy, Steven Wright, Rob Gibbons and Bobby Gibbons.

Memorials may be made to Midway Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 12183 Black River Road, New Zion, S.C. 29111.

Joseph Walters

Joseph “Peanut” Walters, 51, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was born in Clarendon County on May 23, 1955, to the late John Walters and Louise Livingston Walters.

Mr. Walters received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He relocated to Brooklyn, N.Y., and was employed by Coper Press. He later returned to Summerton and worked as a carpenter until his health failed.

Mr. Walters is preceded in death by a brother, Harry Lee Walters.

Those left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory are his mother, Louise Livingston Walters of the home; two children; Ruth (Darelle) Squirewell of Columbia and Kawana Aikens of Charleston; seven brothers; John (Patricia) Walters, James (Robin) Walters, Emanuel (Joann) Walters and Perry (Gardina) Young all of Brooklyn, N.Y., Willie (Josephine) Walters of Queensvillage, N.Y., Charlie Parker of Sumter and Carnell (Edna) Walters of Summerton; six sisters; Deloris Walters, Joanne Walters, Cherry Mack, Cheryl McRae and Jane Lawson, all of Summerton, and Geneva (Arthur) Denson of Philadelphia, Pa.; three aunts; Dorothy Walters Richardson and Mary Ann Lawson, both of Summerton, and Ruth (James) Melton of Queens Village, N.Y.; a great-aunt; Helen Lawson of Summerton; four uncles; Jerry (Odell) Walters of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Charlie Livingston of Queens Village, N.Y., William Livingston of Summerton and Harry (Claudia) Livingston of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three grandsons; Cherron Ragin, Zhavin Squirewell and I’Zaiah Squirewell of Columbia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Homegoing services of Mr. Walters were held on Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at Greater St. Phillips RMUE Church in Pinewood. Services were officiated by the Rev. Warren Hatcher and the Rev. Amos Hatcher.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
