Mary Starnes

HEATH SPRINGS - Mrs. Mary Workman Starnes, 74, of 226 W. Cauthen St. died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Beaver Creek Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mike Hammond and Paul Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Starnes was a daughter of the late Robert Clarence Workman and Blanche Catoe Workman. She was the widow of Lawton Starnes. She was retired from Springs Industries and a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, C. Wade Broughton and Glen Broughton, both of Heath Springs; her daughter, Glenda Williams of Heath Springs; her brother, Coleman Eugene "Gene" Workman of Lancaster; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Beaver Creek Baptist Church building fund, 6170 John Haile Road, Heath Springs, SC 29058.

Nathaniel Williams

CLOVER - Mr. Nathaniel Wil-liams, 82, of 703 Beersheba Road died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at Pied-mont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Harmony United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, with the Rev. Charles White officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of Clover, Mr. Williams was a son of the late Fred Williams and Delia Tate Williams. He was a member of Mount Harmony United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his son, James William Byrd of Clover; and two brothers, Thomas Williams of Clover and Bill Williams of Gastonia, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Mount Harmony United Methodist Church.

The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Wright Funeral Home is in charge.

Willie Barber Sr.

RICHBURG - Mr. Willie "Bo" Barber Sr., 76, of 5801 Richburg Road died Wednesday, August 4, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Ararat AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Leroy Ellison officiating and the Rev. Rodney Hamright and Bishop G. Barrett assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Barber was a son of the late Charlie Barber and Margie White Barber. He was a member of Mount Ararat AME Zion Church. He attended the Family Healing Outreach Ministry. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a former employee of J.P. Stevens.

Surviving are his wife, Ammie Young Barber of the home; six sons, James Barber, Clarence Barber and Michael Brown, all of Great Falls, Bobby Barber of the home, Willie Barber Jr. and Ralph Barber, both of Lancaster; three daughters, Janie Tidwell, Gloria Caldwell, both of Great Falls, and Yvonne Hamright of Rock Hill; two brothers, Charlie Barber Jr. of Columbia and Theodore Barber of Charlotte; three sisters, Mary Mack of Columbia, Azalee Young and Martha Barber, both of Richburg; 22 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester, and at other times at the home of James and Gloria Caldwell, 971 Gibson End Road, Great Falls.

The body can be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at King's Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Monday.

Sammie Clark Jr.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Sammy L. Clark Jr., 55, of 716 Gaywood Drive died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Mercy South Hospital.

The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Long & Son Mortuary, 2312 Beatties Ford Road, Char-lotte.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Clark was a son of the late Sammie Joe Clark and Cora Knightner Clark.

Surviving are four sons, Sammy Clark, Troy Clark, Gene Clark and John John Clark, all of Charlotte; his daughter, Donna William of Charlotte; two brothers, Gary Clark and Troy Clark, both of Rock Hill; six sisters, Bertha Gwynn of Virginia, Betty McCorkle, Gail Walton and Peggy Ervin, all of Rock Hill, Patricia "Penny" Sandifer of Far Rockaway, N.Y., and Gwendolyn Baptiste of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and eight grandchildren.

Thelma Goble

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Thelma Simmons Goble, 83, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, with the Rev. Don Brooks officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Lenior, N.C., Mrs. Goble was a daughter of the late Walter Gordon Simmons and Bessie Hood Simmons. She was a homemaker and member of New Life Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Gary Goble of Charlotte; three daughters, Betty Laney and Linda Brooks, both of Charlotte, and Barbara Meares of York; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Boulevard, Charlotte.

Edward Mathews Sr.

CHESTER - Mrs. Edward Lanier "Red" Mathews Sr., 68, of 2058 Old York Road died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Lowrys Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roger Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Monroe, Ga., Mr. Mathews was a son of the late Pat Mathews and Bonnie Nicholson Mathews. He was retired from Springs Industries and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Surviving are his wife, Dolly M. Mathews; his son, Eddie Mathews of Chester; two daughters, Carol Cameron and Linda Roof, both of Chester; his brother, Leon Mathews of Sumter; his sister, Lucille Blackwell of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wright's Home for Funerals.

Glenn Looney

ROCK HILL - Mr. Glenn Roland Looney, 71, of 1121 Princeton Road died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at home.

The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Cannon officiating. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arling-ton, Va., at a later date.

Mr. Looney was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church. He was a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force with 20 years service. He was a graduate of Winthrop University and the Medical University of South Carolina.

During his military career he served as a cardiopulmonary lab technician and later as a physician's assistant. Mr. Looney was a member of the Frank Roach American Legion Post 34 and the Air Force Sergeants Association.

Surviving are his wife, Anita Cox Looney; his son, Brian Looney of Lake Lure, N.C.; his daughter, Sharon Looney of Morganton, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Greene Funeral home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Jessie Threatt

LANCASTER - Mrs. Jessie Rae Slagle Threatt, 77, of 1081 Snow Drive died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Frank Lybrand officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Threatt was a daughter of the late Hunter A. Slagle and Kitty Mae Morrow Slagle. She was retired from Springs Industries. She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are her husband, Willie "Bill" Threat; two daughters, Pat Threatt of the home and Linda Marion Threatt Curtis of Lancaster; her grandson; and her great-grandson.

The family will receive friends at home.

Memorials may be made to Zion United Methodist Church building fund, 1665 Zion Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

John Alexander

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Mr. John Stanley Alexander, 54, of 521 N. 48th Ave. died Saturday, July 31, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at St. James Methodist Church in Clover, with the Revs. Keith Hunter and Tyrone Moore officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Charlotte, Mr. Alexander was a son of the late Grady Alexander and Vernice Moore Alexander. He was a 1963 graduate of West Charlotte High School and a 1967 graduate of Johnson C. Smith University. He was a former director of the National Conference of Black Mayors and worked in other capacities with the conference. He served in the Peace Corps in India. He served on the Cities in Schools board of directors, the United Negro College Fund fund-raising committee, the National Association of Blacks in Energy, United Way of Greater New Orleans, Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors in New Orleans and the Hotel Diu Hospital finance committee.

He earned the NAACP Community Service Award, National Conference of Black Mayors Appreciation Award, the NAACP Corporate Award for Minority Business Development.

Mr. Alexander was named to Who's Who in Black Corporate New Orleans. In 1992 he received a Certificate of Merit for Outstanding service by the Mayor of New Orleans and received the Arkansas Traveler Award in 1991 from then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton.

Surviving are three children, Rava Colby, Richard L. Alexander, and Regina Alexander, all of Charlotte; his former wife, Carolyn Wallace Alexander of Charlotte; and three brothers, Leonard Alexander and Grady Alexander, both of Charlotte, and William Alexander of Clover.

The family will receive friends at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Dorothy Ruckman

BEAUFORT - Mrs. Dorothy Burriss Ruckman, 96, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The graveside service will be noon today at Ocean Woods Memorial Park.

A native of Mount Pleasant, Ohio, Mrs. Ruckman was a daughter of the late Edmond B. Burriss and Edna McMasters Burriss. She was a resident of Myrtle Beach from 1946 until 1969, where she was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are four daughters, Edna Walker of Cadiz, Ohio, Mary Anne Donley of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Brenda McLeod of Seabrook, and Karen Hood of Rock Hill; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and her great-great-great-grandchild.

Margaret Steen

KERSHAW - Mrs. Margaret Jordan Steen, 81, of 3292 Love Road died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 5 p.m. today at Abney Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mendel Baker and Larry Plyler officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Steen was a daughter of the late Squire Dudley Jordan and Katherine Williams Jordan. She was a member of Abney Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Sunshiners Sunday school class.

Surviving are her husband, Earl Steen; two daughters, Pearlie Mae Steen of Pageland and Daisy Mosley of Bethune; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Abney Baptist Church, 3907 Roberts Road, Kershaw, SC 29067.

Camilla Toatley

ATLANTA - Miss Camilla Nicole Toatley, 15, of Atlanta, formerly of Rock Hill, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Emerald Chapter Hospital in Atlanta.

The funeral will be noon Sunday at Gus Hill Funeral Home in Atlanta.

A native of Rock Hill, Camilla was a former student at Mount Gallant Elementary School.

Surviving are her mother, Debra Toatley of Rock Hill; her father, Jerry McClure Jr. of Rock Hill; two brothers, Kevin Toatley of Atlanta and Brandon J. McClure of Rock Hill; and her sister, Natasha Toatley of Atlanta.

Mack Brown

JOANNA - Mr. Mack Lee Brown, 80, of 606 N. Main St. died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at Laurens County Hospital in Clinton.

A graveside service will be 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Pinelawn Memory Garden.

A native of Royston, Ga., Mr. Brown was a son of the late Earcie Brown and Cancie Brown. He was a former employee of Joanna and Clinton Mills. He was co-owner and operator of the Brown Brothers Grocery Store in Joanna. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He was an Army veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart.

Surviving are his wife, Edna Hamm Brown; his son, Maxie H. Brown of Rock Hill; his daughter, Mary Ann Delk of Bamberg; his brother, James L. Brown of Joanna; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 at Gray Funeral Home in Clinton.

Elizabeth Schaefer

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Elizabeth M. "Betty" Schaefer of 1610 Bridal Trail died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, with the Rev. Thomas B. Carter officiating. Burial will be private.

Memorials may be made to St. Mathias Episcopal Church building fund, P.O. Box 4740, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
