Williams Simpson

ROCK HILL - Mr. William Brice Simpson, 96, of 1935 Ebenezer Road, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Harmony Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bob Porterfield and Jerry Devinney officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Simpson was a native of Chester County. He was a lifelong member of Harmony Baptist Church. He was a farmer and an avid hunter.

He was a son of the late William Mills and Frances C. Pittman Simpson. He was the widower of Margaret M. Simpson.

Survivors include two sons James B. Simpson and Johnny Lee Simpson, both of Edgemoor; his brother Ellie Franklin Simpson of Rock Hill; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to White Oak Manor Activity Fund, 1935 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

William Stafford

ROCK HILL - Mr. William Michael Stafford, 21, of 2985 Greenwood Road died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wolfe Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jason Edward Hurt officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mr. Stafford was a native of Charlotte. He was employed with Westport Container Corporation in Charlotte.

Surviving are his parents, Birdie S. and Mark Allred of Fort Mill; four brothers Joseph Michael Stafford, Chris Allred and Cody Allred, all of Fort Mill, and Leonard S. Stafford of Rock Hill; his sister, Teresa S. Cronell of Rock Hill; his maternal grandmother and guardian, Mary Stafford of Rock Hill; and his maternal great-grandmother, Bertha Hilton of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Mary Stafford, 2985 Greenwood Road, Rock Hill.

Harget Steen

PAGELAND - Mr. Harget Steen, 64, of Pageland died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at his home.

The funeral will be 5 p.m. Tuesday at Rose Memorial Church of the Nazarene in Pageland. Burial will be at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Steen was a native of Mt. Croghan. He was a member of the Rose Memorial Church of the Nazarene.

He was the son of the late John Buford and Nora Belle Steen.

Surviving are his wife, Allene Steen; his son Jacky Steen of Lancaster; three daughters, Debbie Eason of Mt. Croghan, Shirley Hopkins of Pageland, and Wanda Nichols of Rock Hill; two brothers, John Steen Jr. of Rock Hill and Pete Steen of Pageland; three sisters, Faddie Hargett, Donnie Knight and Bonnie Steen, all of Pageland; six grandchildren and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Elsie Sullivan

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Elsie Horton Sullivan, 101, of 2655 India Hook Road died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at Westminster Towers.

A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Laurelwood Cemetery with a memorial service following at 11 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Timothy McClendon officiating.

Mrs. Sullivan was a native of York County. She graduated from Draughn's Business College in Columbia. She was a member of the Rock Hill Women's Club and was a longtime member of St. John's United Methodist Church. She was active in the Browning Sykes Sunday school class and other church activities.

She was the daughter of the late Howell F. and Margaret Roach Horton. She was the widow of William Herbert Sullivan.

Surviving are her daughter, Dorothy S. Reid of Rock Hill; her sister, Nelle H. Mulligan of Columbia; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 2655 India Hook Road.

Thomasina Bowen

YORK - Mrs. Thomasina Smith Bowen, 70, of 313 California St. died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in McConnells, with the Rev. A.J. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Bowen attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was a member of the Deaconess Board, the Hymn Choir, the Missionary Society, the Pastor's Aide, the flower committee, a former member of the Usher Board and the Kitchen committee.

She also was a member of the AP Society.

Surviving are her husband, James Bowen; five sons, Johnny Bowen and Gilbert Bowen, both of Washington, D.C., Jimmy Bowen of Minneapolis, and Thomas Bowen and Christopher Bowen, both of York; three daughters, Ella Bowen of the home, Brenda Kennon of McConnells, and Pat Kennon of Pineville, N.C.; her sister, Thelma Medlin of Charlotte; her aunt, Ruth Moore of McConnells, who reared her;

23 grandchildren, including Kimberli Bowen of Gastonia, N.C. and Terrance Bowen of McConnells, whom she reared; and seven great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 5 to 7 tonight at Wright Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Irene Caveny

ROCK HILL-Mrs. Irene Williams Caveny, 95, of 311 Pennington Road died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at home.

Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Tirzah ARP Church cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Tirzah ARP Church, with the Rev. Barry Eller officiating.

A native of York County, Mrs. Caveny was the daughter of the late Walter Betts Williams and Mattie Wilson Gourley Williams. She was the widow of Robert W. Caveny.

She was a homemaker and was a member of Tirzah ARP Church.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel.

Jeffery Champion

CHESTER - Mr. Jeffery Mitchell Champion, 47, formerly of Chester, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Mich.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First General Baptist Church of Drayton Plains in Waterford, Mich. Interment will follow at Ottawa Park Cemetery.

Mr. Champion was employed at Superior Reddi-Mix and was a member of the Teamsters Local No. 614. He was a member of the SAL Squadron and First Vice Commander of the American Legion Chief Pontiac Post No. 377. He was a member and chaplain of the 18th District SAL, a member of Westside Baptist and First General Baptist churches.

Surviving are his wife, Kimberly Champion; three daughters, Brandy Lovaas of Clarkville, Tenn., Alexus Champion and Alyssa Champion; his parents, James M. Champion and Ruby Champion, both of Waterford, Mich.; his brother, James M. Champion of Hudson, Fla.; two sisters, Juleanne C. King of Auburn Hills, Mich., and Jennifer Schneider of Waterford, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Coats Funeral Home in Waterford, Mich. from 7 to 9 tonight and from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The American Legion memorial will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the First General Baptist Church, 2933 Frembes Road, Waterford, MI, 48329, Gideons Bible or the Sons of the American Legion for children and youth programs.

Lindsay Gillespie

CHARLESTON - Miss Lindsay Brock Gillespie, 14, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, in Charleston, W.Va.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fort Johnson Baptist Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

She is a daughter of David Gillespie Jr. of York, and Mr. and Mrs. Alan Johnson of Charleston.

She was a rising freshman at James Island High School. She was a member of Fort Johnson Baptist Church, where she was active in the youth group.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her brother, David Lindsay Gillespie III of Charleston; her sister, Rachael Brown of Charleston; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. David Gillespie Sr. of Rock Hill; and her maternal grandfather, Stuart Brown of Lexington, N.C.

The family will receive friends at 1869 Mt. Holly Road, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to the Lindsay Gillespie Memorial Fund, c/o Fort Johnson Baptist Church, 1473 Camp Road, Charleston, SC 29412.

James Gist Sr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. James Gist Sr., 79, of 243 Robinson St. died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999 at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at United House of Prayer, with Apostle E. Webb officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Gist attended York County public schools and was retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co.

He was a member of Nazareth Baptist Church.

He belonged to the Emmanuel Church Aid Society No. 15, AMP Burial Society No. 23 and Sons of Life Masonic Lodge No. 61.

Surviving are his wife, Isabell Gist of the home; his son, James Gist Jr. of Rock Hill; his daughter, Geraldine Lowry of Rock Hill; two brothers, John M. Gist and Willie Gist of Rock Hill; his sister, Helen Foster of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, including Dennis Roger Davis and Quintus Davis, whom he raised.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 7 tonight at Parker Funeral Home. It will be placed in the church 1 p.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 p.m. until the service Wednesday.

Elaine Knight

LANCASTER - Mrs. Elaine Robinson Knight, 56, of 2020 Knight Road died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eastside Baptist Church, with the Revs. Joel Rhyner and Donald Tillman officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Knight was a daughter of the late Fred W. Robinson and Ruby Anita Robinson.

She was a member and custodian of Eastside Baptist Church, a member of the WMU and was in charge of the nursery for 16 years.

Surviving are her husband, Ray Knight; her son, Jimmy R. Knight of Lancaster; two brothers, Robert Litinski and Richard Litinski, both of Patterson, N.J.; and her sister, Diane Robinson Waycaster of Jacksonville, Fla.

The body will be taken to to her home at 2 p.m. today. The family will receive friends until 1 p.m. Wednesday at home.

Memorials may be made to Eastside Baptist Church Building Fund, 1180 Garnette Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Evelyn Isom

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Evelyn Brown Isom, formerly of Rock Hill, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999 in Philadelphia.

A funeral will be Friday in Philadelphia.

Mrs. Isom had lived in Philadelphia. She was the widow of Oscar Isom Sr. Surviving are three sons, Oscar Isom Jr., Leroy Isom and Quinton Isom all of Philadelphia; her daughter, Diane Towels of Mitchelleville, Md.; her brother, Arthur Brown of Rock Hill; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 6 p.m. today at New Mt. Olivet A.M.E. Zion Church.

Robinson Funeral Home of Philadelphia is in charge.
