Mary Kirkland

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Bennett Kirkland, 72, of 1280 Curtis St. died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Northside Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Jerry Sosebee and the Rev. Don Hebert officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Fort Mill, Mrs. Kirkland was a daughter of the late Banks and Leona Whitesides Bennett. She was a homemaker and was a member of Northside Baptist Church, where she loved to travel with the church's Joy Group for senior citizens.

Mrs. Kirkland was the widow of James Douglas "Doug" Kirkland Sr.

Surviving are two sons, James Douglas "Doug" Kirkland Jr. of Rock Hill and David Lee Kirkland of Chester; her daughter, Karen Kirkland of the home; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church, Long-range Planning, 1140 Curtis St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Flossie Mullinax

LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Mrs. Flossie Auton Mullinax, 73, of Cardinal Care, formerly of 428 Lincoln St., High Shoals, N.C., died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Warlick Funeral Home, with the Revs. Jerry Robinson and Norman Clark officiating. Burial will be at Hollybrook Cemetery.

A native of Fort Myers, Fla., Mrs. Mullinax was a daughter of the late Martin A. Auton and Ruth Keener Auton. She was former manager of the Century Theater in Lincolnton.

Surviving are her husband, Charles E. Mullinax; her son, Charles E. Mullinax III of Hickory Grove; two daughters, Deborah M. Evans of Hickory Grove and Lisa D. Mullinax of High Shoals; her brother, Dan Auton of Lincolnton; three sisters, Betty Baxter of Vale, N.C., and Missie Beal and Pat Carnes, both of Lincoln-ton; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Warlick Funeral Home.

William Picken

LANDOVER, Md. - Funeral services for Mr. William "Tate" Picken of Landover, formerly of Washington, were Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery in Clinton, Md.

S.B. Jenkins Funeral Home in Landover was in charge.

Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Mildred Richardson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mildred Lorane Boyd Richardson, 81, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Magnolia Manor.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Mike Lowery officiating.

A native of York, Mrs. Richardson was a daughter of the late Leonard Monroe Boyd and Janie May Nivens Boyd. She was the widow of James Francis Richardson. Mrs. Richardson was retired from Lowenstein Textiles where she was employed as a billing clerk. She was a member West End Baptist Church and the York County Artist Guild.

Surviving are her son, Ted Richardson of Spartanburg; her sister, Helen Youngblood of Rock Hill; and her granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Everette Hovis, 269 Plantation Road, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church youth ministry, 1727 McConnells Highway, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

William Steele

ROCK HILL - Mr. William Crosby Steele, 93, of 1330 India Hook Road died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Westminster Health Care Center.

Services will be private.

Mr. Steele was a son of the late Marshal A. Steele and Lula Crosby Steele. He graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1924. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of Kentucky, his master of arts degree and doctor of education from Columbia University in New York. He served 17 years in the Coast Guard.

Mr. Steele was the widower of Larenia Sievert.

Surviving are several cousins.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

J.P. Timmons

ROCK HILL - Mr. Joseph Pollard "J.P" Timmons, 82, 1568 Hallmark Drive died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bruce Wyatt, Calvin Morrow and Jerry McNair officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Timmons was a son of the late Joseph A. Timmons and Martha McKee Timmons. He was the widower of Mildred McGuirt Timmons. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He also was active in the Rock Hill Senior Citizen Center. He was retired from Celanese Corp. and worked in the Bobbins Store.

Surviving are his son, Ronald O. Timmons of Rock Hill; his sister, Alyce T. Penland of York; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church building fund, 830 N. Jones St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

John Wren Sr.

GAFFNEY - The Rev. John Everette Wren Sr., 84, of Peachtree Centre died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at Peachtree Centre.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Joel Sellers, John Wren and Joe Wren officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery.

A native of Whitmire, the Rev. Wren was a son of the late George Fredrick Wren and Cloia Whittle Wren. He was a pastor and member of First Baptist Church in Gaffney.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Blanche Petty Wren; four sons, John Wren Jr. of King, N.C., Joe Wren of Summerville, Jim Wren of Charlotte and Jack Wren of Rock Hill; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home, 211 E. Frederick St., Gaffney.

The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Ernest Bankhead

YORK - Mr. Ernest Felix "Phil" Bankhead, 92, of 103 Bypass, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Gold Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. George McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of Hickory Grove, Mr. Bankhead was a son of the late Alexander Bishop Bankhead and Sarah Barnes Bankhead. He was a concrete finisher for Lee Skidmore of Charlotte and was a retired farmer. Mr. Bankhead was a deacon of the former St. Paul Baptist Church in Hickory Grove. He was a member of the Tryon Masonic Lodge No. 8 in Shelby, N.C.

Surviving are his wife, Annie Belle Burris Bankhead; two sons, Felix Bankhead Jr. of Morristown, N.J., and Billy Bankhead of York; six daughters, Betty B. Rawlinson of York, Quincy B. Starnes of Morris-town, N.J., Wilhemenia B. Lawrence of Clover, Ernestine Ritchie of Somerset, N.J., Doris B. Wilkins of Wilmington, Del., and Mildred Jones of the home; two brothers, Willie Floyd Bankhead Sr. of Hickory Grove and Wardell Bankhead of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his sister, Lounell Good of Hickory Grove; four grandchildren whom he reared, Emily Bank-head and Ronnie Bankhead, both of the home, and Shelia Bankhead and Felix King, both of York; two great-grandchildren whom he reared, Quisha Bankhead and Jermaine Bankhead, both of the home; 28 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Masonic Rites will be given and the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Wright Funeral Home and at other times the family will receive friends at home.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Evelyn Childers

YORK - Mrs. Evelyn Montgomery Childers, 82, of 63 4th St. died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at Anderson Area Medical Center in Anderson.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at York Church of God, with the Rev. Donald Hawkins officiating and the Rev. James L. Garner assisting. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of York County, Mrs. Childers was a daughter of the late James Franklin Montgomery and Belle Ashe Montgomery. Mrs. Childers was a retired weaver from Cannon Mills in York. She was a charter member of the York Church of God, where she taught the Ladies Bible Class and was active in the Ladies Ministries.

Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn C. Yarborough of Calhoun Falls; two brothers, James "Buck" Montgomery of Appleton, Wis., and Ernest "Opossum" Montgomery of Sharon; three sisters, Mary Lee Huskins of Columbus, Ga., Ola Ramsey of York and Helen Montgomery of Sharon; her grandchild; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Allen Coward

LANCASTER - Mr. Allen Z. Coward, 58, of 1956 Catoe Road died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Mahaffey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Cecil N. Johnson officiating.

A native of Savannah, Ga., Mr. Coward was a son of the late Robert Lee Coward and Leona Mixon Coward. Mr. Coward was self-employed and was a member of AA and Diff Fishing Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Robyn Coward Cauthen of Lancaster and Conner Lee Coward of Chapin; his brother, Robert Coward Jr. of Lexington; and his grandson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home and at other time at the home of Robyn Cauthen 1920 Catoe Road, Lancaster.

Melvin Harrison

ROCK HILL - Mr. Melvin Donald Harrison, 51, of Rock Hill, formerly of Richlands, Va., died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at a Pineville, N.C., hospital.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Singleton Funeral Home in Cedar Bluff, Va., with the Rev. Jerry Casey officiating. Burial will be at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery at Richlands, Va.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Carowinds Campground.

A native of Tazewell County, Mr. Harrison was a son of Grat Harrison of Richlands and the late Corrine Lowe Harrison. He was a 1967 graduate of Richlands High School and was a plumber for 30 years. He worked part-time at the Carowinds campground. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and attended Central Church of God in Charlotte.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Inez Carolyn Short Harrison; two sons, Donald James "Jamie" Harrison of the home and Charles Eugene "Nick" Harrison of Charlotte; his stepmother, Dana Harrison of Richlands; his brother, Mark Anthony "Tony" Harrison of Bandy, Va.; two stepbrothers, William Scott Mitchell of Leesburg and Harvey Mitchell of Wise, Va.; three stepsisters, Glenna Short of Richlands, Amy Woods of Toledo, Ohio, and Julia Smith of Greensboro, N.C.

Rebecca Turner

YORK - Mrs. Rebecca Sims Turner, 65, of 1391 Lincoln Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Randy Gardner officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Turner was a daughter of the late Alva L. Sims and Mary Sullivan Sims. A homemaker, Mrs. Turner was a member of First Baptist Church in York.

Surviving are her husband, David C. Turner Sr.; three sons, Ricky Faile of Rock Hill, David Faile of Catawba, and Michael Faile of York; two stepsons, David C. Turner Jr. of Campobello and Buddy Turner of Inman; her stepdaughter, Sandy Turner of Hartsville; two brothers, Alva C. Sims of Rock Hill and Jerry B. Sims of Catawba; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral home and at other times at the home.

Jack Johnston

ROCK HILL - Mr. Jack Whitesides Johnston, 57, of 569 Cannon Drive died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. today at Forest Hills Cemetery, with the Rev. Steve Hogg officiating.

A native of Columbia, Mr. Johnston was a son of the late Jack Whitesides Johnston Sr. and Lessie Dew Johnston. Mr. Johnston was a retired Allstate Insurance agent and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Jerry Hickman Johnston; his daughter, Kimberly Johnston of Rock Hill; three brothers, Strom T. Johnston and Randy Johnston, both of Columbia, and Larry Johnston of Lugoff; two sisters, Sherry Phillips of Hartsville and Loretta Bouknight of Columbia; and his grandchild.

Frank Lewis

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. Frank Lewis, 67, of Heath Springs died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Ebenezer AME Zion Church in Camden, with the Rev. Dr. N.H. Hicklin and the Rev. Vernell Stukes officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Lewis was a son of the late Thomas Lewis and Minnie Jones Lewis. He was a member of Ebenezer AME Zion Church and sang with the Gospel Stars Choir.

Surviving are three sisters, Josey McGill and Marietta Kitchens, both of Heath Springs, and Nettie Gray of Camden.

Kirkland Funeral Home in Kershaw is in charge.
