Elie Russell

ROCK HILL - Mr. Elie Brown Russell, 85, of 1485 Russell Road died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Anthony Dick officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of York County, Mr. Russell was a son of the late William Y. Russell and Clara Branch Russell. He was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher and clerk of the session. He was a member of Bethesda Volunteer Fire Department and served as treasurer for 15 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 111, York Crescent Shrine Club and Hejaz Temple. Mr. Russell also served on the Fishing Creek Basin Committee. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Co. Aragon Plant where he was the supply room supervisor.

Surviving are his son, William E. "Bill" Russell of the home; his daughter, Teresa R. Callahan of Rock Hill; two sisters, Clara R. Snavely and Edna Pinson, both of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Jerry Tyler

LORIS - Mr. Jerry D. Tyler, 47, of Tyler Road died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, in Conway Hospital.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Cane Branch Baptist Church. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Horry County, Mr. Tyler was a son of Geneva Rhodes Tyler and the late John Davis Tyler. He was a 1970 graduate of Loris High School and graduate of Horry Georgetown Tech. He served in the National Guard for 28 years and was a First Sergeant and Unit Admin-istrator of Company C-1263 Armor in Conway.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Annette Jordan Tyler of Loris; his daughter, Stephanie Tyler of Loris; three brothers, John Wayne Tyler, Richard K. Tyler and Glynn L. Tyler, all of Loris; and his sister, Karen T. Shaffer of Chester.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.

James Christopher Jr.

UNA - Mr. James M. Christopher Jr., 61, of 351 New Cut Road died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, in Charlottesville, Va.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at his home, with the Rev. Kenneth Cash officiating.

A native of West Allie, Wis., Mr. Christopher was a son the late James Christopher and Margaret Christopher. Mr. Christopher was employed by York Freight Co. in York. He was an Air Force veteran and was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving are his wife, Carrie M. Christopher; his son, David Carter of Chesnee; two daughters, Donna Clement of Spartanburg and Norma Green of Saxon; two grandchildren, Michael Justice and Jennifer Carter, both of the home; 8 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Stribling Funeral Home in Duncan.

John Connolly II

BREVARD, N.C. - Mr. John Marvin Connolly II, 72, of Brevard and Douglasville, Ga., died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 in an Atlanta, Ga., hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home, with the Revs. Tommy Owen and Ben Ormand officiating. Entombment will be at Pisgah Gardens Mausoleum.

A native of York County, Mr. Connolly was a son of the late John Marvin Connolly and Edith Callahan Connolly. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in Honolulu. During his career, Mr. Connolly owned and operated perpetual care cemeteries, funeral homes and monument companies. He served as president of the South Carolina Cemetery Association and was appointed by former Gov. Richard Riley as state Cemetery Commissioner. He was an honorary member of the Cemetery Management Council. He was a Woodman of the World and was a member of the Brevard Davidson River Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Margie H. Connolly; three sons, H. Wayne Connolly of Brevard, John Marvin Connolly III of Douglasville, and George Connolly of Greer; his stepson, Michael Walters of Greenville; three daughters, Rosalyn C. Steven and Emma Jean C. Kokesh, both of Columbia, and Deborah C. Mulenex of Brevard; two brothers, Harry V. Connolly and Jimmy Orange, both of Columbia; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

John Freeman

ROCK HILL - Mr. John Freeman, 70, of 819 Finley Road died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Bill Shytle officiating.

A native of Lamar, Mr. Freeman was a son of the late J.H. and Letha Ham Freeman. He was a self-employed carpenter and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked at Rock Hill Printing & Finishing for 13 years. He was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving are two sons, John R. Freeman of Rock Hill and Ronald W. Freeman of Surfside Beach; his half brother, Charles Sutton of Oregon; his sister, Minnie Wolfe of Rock Hill and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home.

Charlie Feaster Jr.

BALTIMORE - Mr. Charlie "C.H." Feaster Jr., 65, of Baltimore, formerly of Chester, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Union Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. today at New Pilgrim Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Roosevelt Davenport Sr. officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Feaster was a son of the late Charlie Feaster Sr. and Amy Feaster. He was educated in the public schools of Chester County. He was a member of New Pilgrim Baptist Church and former member of Sweet Hope Baptist Church. He retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1994.

Surviving are his wife, Bessie E. Gore Feaster; two sons, Charles Edward Feaster and Victor Feaster, both of Baltimore; four daughters, Veronica F. Robinson, Theresa Feaster, Sharon E. Feaster and Cynthia Y. Tims, all of Baltimore; two brothers, the Rev. Frazier Feaster of Columbia, Md. and Robert Feaster of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at New Pilgrim Baptist Church.

King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester, is in charge of local arrangements.

Harrison Giles

FORT MILL - Mr. Harrison Russell Giles, 47, of 201 Pebble Creek Crossing died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at home.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Giles was employed by Tiffany & Co. of Charlotte. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky at Columbia and was an avid gardener.

Surviving are his companion, Richard Schumacher of the home; his father, Lawrence Giles of Middlesboro, Ky.; two sisters, Regina Giles of Middlesboro, Ky., and Merrill Seldes of New York; and two brothers, Larry Giles of Spring Grove, Va., and David Giles of Nashville, Tenn.

Memorials may be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204.

Hazel Lowery

LANCASTER - Mr. Hazel Marion Lowery, 59, of 113 Lure Lane died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ansel Smith officiating. Burial will be at Westside City Cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Lowery was a son of Wilma Hough Lowery and the late Paul Marion Lowery. He was the owner and operator of H&J Auto Repair and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Jean Knight Lowery; two sons, Marion Dennis Lowery and Mitchell David Lowery, both of Lancaster; four daughters, Wanda Lowery of Lancaster, Sharon Lowery of Heath Springs, Sandra Estridge of Kershaw and Melinda Polston of Lancaster; his brother, Thomas C. Lowery of Kershaw; his sister, Evelyn Jones of Palatka, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Mattie Meeks

GASTONIA, N.C. - Ms. Mattie Jane Meeks, 85, of 311 Beatrice Costner Ave., formerly of York, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wright Funeral Home in York, with the Rev. Billy Tate officiating and the Rev. Ronnie Neely assisting. Burial will be at Uniondale Cemetery in York.

A native of York, Ms. Meeks was a daughter of the late Doc Meeks and Eva Lowery Meeks. She joined White Hill AME Zion Church at an early age.

Surviving are two sons, Willie Meeks of the home and Paul Richard Meeks of Kansas City, Mo.; her daughter, Lizzie Meeks Neely of Gastonia; her grandson whom she reared, Michael Meeks of the home; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Wright Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

Dorothy Morganstern

SUMTER - Mrs. Dorothy Chambers Morganstern, 65, of 319-B Picardy Drive died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church in York, with the Rev. Thomas McPhail officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Morganstern was a daughter of the late Henry Clarence Chambers and Florence Belle Campbell Chambers. She worked in memorial garden sales. She was a member of Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband, Wayne R. Morganstern; two sons, Jimmy Oates and Danny Oates, both of Rock Hill; her daughter, Janice Oates Mathis of Rock Hill; two stepdaughters, Jane O'Brien of Florida and Jill Sotzing of Ohio; her brother, Henry Neal Chambers of Anderson; her sister, Julia Chambers Curry of York; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

LANCASTER - Mr. Martin Crawford Steele, 76, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Columbia.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Westside City Cemetery, with the Rev. Sam Thomas officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Steele was a son of the late Walter Lee Steele and May Cunningham Steele. He was the retired owner and operator of a trucking business. He was a member of the American Legion and First Presbyterian Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his son, Ronald Crawford "Ronnie" Steele of Lancaster; his daughter, Margaret Elaine "Peggy" Quinn of Dakota Beach, Fla.; two brothers, James B. Steele of Lancaster and William M. Steele of Kershaw; his sister, Tennie Kerr of Lancaster; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of Tennie Kerr, 938 Forest Drive, Lancaster.

Bernice Wilson

TEGA CAY - Mrs. L. Bernice Wilson, 84, of Tega Cay died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Gray Funeral Home in Alton, Ill., with the Rev. Bill Crank officiating. Burial will be at Woodland Hill Cemetery.

A native of Harrisburg, Ill., Mrs. Wilson was a daughter of the late Everit Ledbetter and Mae Fowler Ledbetter. She was the widow of Charles Wilson. She was a shot-shell loader with Olin for 29 years.

Surviving are her son, Dwain Arview of West Frankfort, Ill.; her daughter, Darlene Morris of Tega Cay; her brother, Burnett Ledbetter of West Frankfort, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. today at Gray Funeral Home.

Ernest Lane

ROCK HILL - Mr. Ernest Michael "E.M." Lane, 88, of 1153 Winthrop Drive died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Monday at St. John's United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Dr. Tim McClendon and Carol Cannon officiating.

Born in Newberry, Mr. Lane was a son of the late Ernest Michael Lane and Zona Neal Lane. He was retired from the S.C. Employment Security Commission's Rock Hill office and worked part time for Bass Funeral Home. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was co-founder of the Rock Hill Rescue Squad and member of the Thursday morning prayer group. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and the Browning Sykes Sunday school class. He was a graduate of Newberry College.

Surviving is his wife, Mary Evelyn Dye Lane.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and other times at the home.
