Eunice Emory

LANCASTER - Mrs. Eunice Hawkins Emory, 87, of 1410 Charlotte Highway died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Harold Owens and the Rev. Steve Miller officiating. Entombment will be at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum.

A native of Spartanburg, Mrs. Emory was a daughter of the late Horace C. Hawkins and Mary Seay Hawkins. She was the widow of Eldridge R. Emory Sr. She was owner and operator of Emory Grocery for more than 40 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are four sons, Eldridge Emory Jr., Melvin Emory and Maurice Emory, all of Lancaster, and Edward Emory of Wadesboro, N.C.; her daughter, Joanne Edwards of Lancaster; her brother, H.C. Hawkins of Spartanburg; two sisters, Helen Coggins and Roma Mills, both of Spartanburg; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Harley Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church building fund, 100 Barron Blvd., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Ruby Land

CHESTER - Mrs. Ruby Pendergrass Land of 565 Vance Drive died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church in the Wilksburg community, with the Revs. J.E. Darby officiating and the Revs. Curtis Washington, James Good, Columbus Pendergrass and Larry Jackson assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Land was a daughter of the late Vinnie Pendergrass. She was the widow of Paul Lee Land. She attended the public schools of Chester County. She joined Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church at an early age, where she was a member of the senior choir and Senior Missionary Society.

Surviving are eight children, Joelene Tripplett of Buffalo, N.Y., Lorine Hardin of Lowrys, Mable Camps, Terry Pendergrass Sr., Willie Pender-grass, Kenneth Pendergrass Sr. and Richard Land, all of Chester, and Rickie Pendergrass of Rock Hill; three stepchildren, Paul Land Jr. of Amityville, N.Y., Sue Mae Chambers of Inwood, N.Y., and David Land Sr.; her sister, Marie Pendergrass of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; 39 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Lorine and Curtis Hardin, 793 Charity Road, Lowrys.

The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. today at Christopher King's Funeral Home at 703 Old York Road, Chester.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today.

Mary Scott

HEATH SPRINGS - Mrs. Mary Robinson Scott, 86, of 614 Hart St. died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Hugh McKinney, the Rev. Dr. Charles Rabon and the Rev. Frank Lybrand officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Heath Springs, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Dickson and Florence Bowers Robinson. She was the widow of Connie Thurman Scott. She was a member of Second Baptist Church and was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are two sons, Billy T. Scott of Yuma, Ariz., and Danny Scott of Runnemeade, N.J.; her daughter, Jeanette Cole of Lancaster; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Jeanette Cole, 1270 Old Pardue Road, Lancaster.

Irene Shaw

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Mrs. Irene Shaw, 82, of Chattanooga died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at home.

The funeral was Nov. 16 at Heritage Funeral Home in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. Burial was at Rock Spring Cemetery.

A native of Lando, Mrs. Shaw had lived in Chattanooga since 1953. She was the widow of Fred Shaw and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three daughters, Nancy Sue Shaw of Cedar Bluff, Ala., Phyllis Davis of East Ridge, Tenn., and Beverly K. Parker of Ringgold, Tenn.; two half-brothers, Marshall Wright of Cartersville, Ga., and Paul Wright of Athens, Ga.; four half-sisters, Rosa Lee Jackson and Patricia Wright, both of Edgemoor, and Albert Brock and Katherine Wright, both of Rock Hill; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Shirley Smith

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Shirley Leach Smith, 43, of 308 S. Clarkson St. died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Edward Garrison officiating. Burial will be private.

Mrs. Smith was a native of Rock Hill. She was in sales with Mutual Distributors.

Surviving are her husband, Jerome Smith; her daughter, Angelic O. Grier of Charlotte; her parents, Sammie and Bessie Adams Leach of Rock Hill; three sisters, Emma Marshall of Clover, Bessie L. McKulty of Anderson and Azalee Leach of Rock Hill; and her grandmother, Emily Hope of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. today at the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church and at other times at home and at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sammie Leach, 302 Irwin St., Rock Hill.

Parker Funeral Home is in charge.

David Adams

LANCASTER - Mr. David "Tump" Adams, formerly of Lancaster County, died Friday Nov. 19, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Gold Hill AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Dr. Marion Wilson officiating. The Rev. Deborah Waddell, pastor, will give the eulogy. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Adams was a son of the late Arthur Adams and Hester Springs Adams. He attended Gold Hill Elementary School in Lancaster County. He was employed with Wetsel Seed Co. Inc. in Charlotte and was a member of Gold Hill AME Zion Church.

Surviving are his son, David Lee McKinney of Waxhaw, N.C.; his daughter, Maxine McKinney of Waxhaw; five sisters, Beatrice Davis, Eunice Williams and Ada Mae Reid, all of Charlotte, and Wilma Adams and Calvert Barber, both of Lancaster County; and his grandson.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home in Rock Hill and at other times at 9302 Van Wyck Road.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.

Mary Barnes

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Carothers Barnes, 81, of 201 Dotson St., died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Laurelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Sollie Hicks officiating.

A native of Macon, Ga., Mrs. Barnes was a retiree of Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. She also worked as a registered nurse at York General Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Barnes was the daughter of the late James Arthur Carothers and Annie Mae Ard Carothers. She was the widow of Webb Elmore Barnes Sr.

Survivors include three sons Webb E. Barnes Jr. of York, Arthur H. Barnes of Rock Hill and Joseph C. Barnes of Summerville; two daughters Mary Ann Sturkey of York and Elizabeth Ann Jordan of Rock Hill; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her son Arthur H. Barnes, 475 Pineview Road, Rock Hill.

Jimmie Byrd

KERSHAW - Mr. Jimmie Lee Byrd, 64, of 5216 Newman Road died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, with the Revs. Clarence Allen and Todd Horton officiating. Burial will be at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Jefferson, Mr. Byrd was a son of the late David Byrd and Louise Horton Byrd. A member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, he was retired from Kendall Co. Mr. Byrd was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Martha McPherson Byrd; his son, Sammy Byrd of Kershaw; his daughter, Terry Horton of Kershaw; two brothers, Joseph Rolf Byrd of Sumter and Charles Michael Byrd of Jefferson; two sisters, Judy Knight of Lancaster and Kay B. Price of Jefferson; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Willie Tennyson Cole

SPARTANBURG - Mrs. Willie Mae Foster Tennyson Cole, 94, formerly of 1750 Drayton Road, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral was Sunday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, with the Revs. Gary Adkins and Heyward Comer officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Park.

A native of Spartanburg, Mrs. Cole was a daughter of the late Samuel Judson Foster and Carrie Moore Foster. She was the widow of Ryan Tillman Cole. She was first married to the late Fred Oliver Tennyson. She was a member of Temple Methodist Church.

Surviving are four sons, A. Leon Tennyson of Spartanburg, D. Samuel Tennyson of Rock Hill, J. William "Bill" Tennyson of Chesnee and Robert L. Tennyson of Pauline; four daughters, Evelyn T. Taylor of Spartanburg, Doris T. Revels of Cowpens, Joyce T. Parris of Drayton and Elizabeth T. Dover of Spartanburg; 26 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Christopher Douglas

ROCK HILL - Christopher Dale Douglas, infant son of Sheila A. Stewart and Chris Douglas, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Shuler officiating.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Jaliaa Stewart and Jada Harris of Edgmoor; two grandmothers, Jackie Stewart and Martha Blackmon; and two grandfathers, J.C. Blackmon and Willie Douglas.

Macon Funeral Home is in charge.

Minor Gardner

KERSHAW-Mr. Minor F. Gardner, 80, of 9885 Flat Creek Road died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Flat Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Elton Lane presiding. Burial will be in Flat Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Gardner was a son of the late Gilbert R. Gardner and and the late Georgia Byrd Gardner. He was a farmer, who served on the Lancaster County ASCS committee, the Lynches River Electric Coop Board of Directors and the Federal Landbank Board of Directors and was a member of the Andrew Jackson Area school board and was on the board of deacons for the Flat Creek Baptist Church. He served in World War II and received a Purple Heart.

Surviving are his wife, Josephine Pressley Gardner; his son, Harold Gardner; three brothers, Robert Gardner and Shelton Gardner, both of Kershaw, and Ray Gardner of Heath Springs; his sister, Helen Sistare of Lancaster; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster.

Memorial may be made to Flat Creek Baptist Church, 3737 Victory Road, Kershaw, SC 29067.

Otis Mobley

CHESTER - Mr. Otis Mobley, 71, of 616 Saluda Rd. died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Greg Keller. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mr. Mobley was a son of the late Boyd Mobley and Annie McKeown Mobley. He attended the Chester County schools. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Mobley was retired from Springs Industries. He attended First Church of Nazarene.

Surviving are his wife, Faye Hendricks Mobley of Chester; his son, Dwan "Jabbo" Mobley of Chester; two brothers, Carl Mobley and Ernest Mobley, both of Chester; his sister, Geneva King of Clinton; two grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene, Family Life Center, 182 Pinckney St., Chester, SC 29706.

Mary Neil

CLOVER-Mrs. Mary Lawrence McCarter Neil, 88, of 401 Smith St. died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Clover Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. William K. Neely and Wallace Tinsley officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.

A native of Filbert, Mrs. Neil was a daughter of the late Mary Meek Lawrence McCarter and the late John Jackson McCarter. After graduating from Asheville Normal College, she was a private tutor on Sanibel Island and taught for over 40 years in area schools including Kinard, Bethel, Bethany and Cotton Belt. She was a member of the Clover Presbyterian Church, and she enjoyed playing golf, gardening and visiting with friends. She was the widow of Mr. W. Roy Neil.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Frances Thomas of Annapolis, Md., and Jane Neil of Charleston; her sister, Johnsie Duncan of Sharon; and her granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover.

Alma Revels

IVA - Mrs. Alma Bertha Brown Revels, 94, of 208 W. Poplar St. died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at NHC HealthCare of Anderson.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Iva First Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Bentley McQuinn officiating. Burial will be at Iva City Cemetery.

A native of Iva, Mrs. Revels was a daughter of the late George W. Brown and Mary Carlisle Brown. A retired employee of Jackson Mill, Mrs. Revels was a member of Iva First Wesleyan Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, member of the Ladies Missionary Society and director of the Iva Golden Agers. She was the widow of Frazier Revels.

Surviving are her son, George Thurman Revels of Iva; her daughter, Helen Nix of Crawford, Ga.; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at The McDougald Funeral Home in Anderson.

The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
