Grover Cook Sr.

FORT MILL - Mr. Martin Grover "Pood" Cook Sr., 78, of 4502 Doby Bridge Road died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at Tanglewood Nursing Home in Ridgeway.

Burial will be private.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Cook was a son of the late Christmas and Mary Cook. He worked most of his life as a farmer and was a lifelong resident of Fort Mill.

Surviving are his son, Martin "Johnny" Cook Jr. of Fort Mill; his caretaker and niece, Barbara Nguyen of Fort Mill; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Martin Cook Sr. Funeral Fund, c/o Wolfe Funeral Home, 314 Spratt St., Fort Mill, SC 29715.

Ray Matthews

SALUDA - Mr. Lindsey Ray Matthews, 60, of Route 1 in the Hollywood community, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at Saluda Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Corinth Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Travis Park Cemetery.

Born in Saluda County, Mr. Matthews was a son of the late Lynwood and Bernice Matthews. He was a retired educator. Mr. Matthews graduated from Newberry College and received a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mr. Matthews was a member of the Saluda County Cattleman's Association, Saluda County Forestry Association, charter member of the Hollywood Ruritan Club and was a member of the University of North Carolina Alumni Association. He was also a member of Corinth Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Men's Association.

Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Matthews; his son, Andrew Matthews of the home; his daughter, Harriett Ryan of Saluda; three brothers, Lynwood Matthews, Waldorf Matthews and Donald Matthews, all of Saluda; his twin sister, Bonnie Jones of Saluda and two other sisters, Jewell Price of Gilbert and Katherine Black of Batesburg; and his granddaughter.

The body can be viewed at the home where the family will receive friends. The body will be placed in the church at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to Hollywood Elementary School English or Physical Education Department, Route 1, Saluda, SC 29138, or to one's charity of choice.

Donald McClurkin

CHESTER - Mr. Donald Oday "Fay" McClurkin, of 110 Odom St. died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, in Columbia.

The family will receive friends at the home and at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Simmons, 115 McClure St.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester.

George Oldham

TEGA CAY - Mr. George Thistleton Oldham, 58, of 9018 Palau Court, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at Hospice of Union County, N.C.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Glenrock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Will Norton officiating.

A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Mr. Oldham was a son of Maude Oldham of New York. He was a major in the U.S. Air Force and graduated from Worchester Polytech of Massachusetts. He was employed by U.S. Air as a pilot and supervisor.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Krystal Oldham of Tega Cay; two sons, Duane Oldham of Phoenix and Jeff Oldham of Los Angeles; two daughters, Kelly Oldham and Allison Oldham, both of North Palm Beach, Fla.; his stepson, Chase Gray of Tega Cay; his stepdaughter, Blake Gray of Tega Cay; and his sister, Barbara Clark of New York.

Visitation will be held after the memorial service. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Monroe, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110.

Fort Mill Funeral Home is in charge.

Laura Parker

YORK - Mrs. Laura Ellen Penley Parker, 77, of 522 Sandifer Road died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at Mercy Main Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Lutheran Chapel Church in Gastonia, N.C., with the Rev. Dr. Michael Frye officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Gaston County, N.C., Mrs. Parker was a daughter of the late Fred and Ida Penley. She worked for Groves Threads and was a member of Lutheran Chapel Church in Gastonia.

Surviving are her husband, Paul Parker; her son, Charles Parker of York; three daughters, Brenda Ann Franklin of Prosperity, Elizabeth Waters of York and Linda Benton of McConnells; her brother, Gilbert Penley of Gastonia; four sisters, Evelyn Queen of Gastonia, Helen McClure of Rock Hill, Wilma Jordan of Dallas and Bertha Cantrell of Gastonia; 19 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia is in charge.

Hubert Stilwell

ROCK HILL - Mr. Hubert Lee Stilwell, 47, of 663 Annafrel St. died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, with the Rev. Doyle Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park with military rites by Fort Jackson.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Stilwell was a son of Marvie Stilwell and the late Harrison Stilwell. He was a retired lineman with Hargett Telephone Co. and was a U.S. Army veteran in Vietnam, where he served in the 101st Airborne Division. He was a member of Mount Gallant Church of God.

Surviving are his mother, Marvie Stilwell of Rock Hill; his brother, Billy Stilwell of Rock Hill; three sisters, Jane Black of Gastonia, N.C., and Margie Kennett and Barbara Burris, both of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 8 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel and at other times at the home of his mother, 663 Annafrel St.

Mary Towery

YORK - Mrs. Mary Helen Towery, 68, of 1929 Houston Drive died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Smyrna Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Norman officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Crouse, N.C., Mrs. Towery was a daughter of the late Samuel and Verdie Huskin. She was a retired textile employee.

Surviving are her son, Mark Towery of York; three daughters, Joni Childers of Hickory Grove, Marilyn Smith of Shelby, N.C., and Hattie Towery of York; two stepsons, Roger Faile of York and Perry Faile of Fort Lawn; her stepdaughter, Dora Johnson of Clover; her brother, Forest Huskin of Lincolnton, N.C.; and two sisters, Betty Weathers of Kings Creek and Maudie Stoots of Gaffney.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Gordon Mortuary in Blacksburg and at other times at the home.

Cora Varnadore

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Cora Passmore Varnadore, 94, of 2475 Neely Store Road died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, with the Rev. David Inman officiating and her great-grandson, Adam Fowler, assisting. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery

A native of Sylva, N.C., Mrs. Varnadore was a daughter of the late William J. Passmore and Orthia Doshia Tranham Passmore. She was the widow of Clarence Mitchum Varnadore.

Mrs. Varnadore was retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. and was a charter member of Mount Gallant Church of God and the Church Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are her son, Charles Varnadore of York; two daughters, Drucilla Cornwell and Ada Cotton, both of Rock Hill; her brother, Charles Passmore of Cashiers, N.C.; two sisters, Luria Canupp of Rock Hill and Ethel Heffner of Franklin, N.C.; 8 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Green Funeral Home Downtown Chapel.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Alma Bryson

BETHUNE - Mrs. Alma Thompson Bryson, 92, of Route 1 died Sunday at Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jack R. Burnette and Wayne Bateman officiating.

Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Bethune, Mrs. Bryson was a daughter of the late Johnny Jefferson and Lillie Mae Griffin Thompson.

She was the widow of John Bryson. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, John C. Bryson of Lexington, Thomas L. Bryson of Columbia and Jimmy L. Bryson of Cassat; three daughters, Pauline Joyner and Novia Thomas of Bethune and Jaunita Chandler of Lexington; her brother, Neal Thompson of Liberty Hill; her sister, Hedy Gooch of Summerton; 42 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 39 great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel, and other times at the home of her daughter, Pauline Joyner, 2550 Charlie Johnson Road, Bethune.

Lillian Catoe

KERSHAW - Mrs. Lillian West Catoe, 81, of 102 N. Minor St. died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bryant D. Fersner Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Bethune, Mrs. Catoe was a daughter of the late George Gregory West and Ollie Virginia Boyce West. She was the widow of Willie Burrell Catoe. She was a floral arranger and was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a teacher in the preschool department.

She was a member of Kershaw Senior Citizens.

Surviving are her son, Gregory Burrell Catoe of Florence; three brothers, Buck West and Heyward West, both of Bethune, and Joe West of Charlotte; four sisters, Aline W. Mobley of Bethune, Ethel Broughton, Sybil W. Sullivan and Mary Jane Sowell, all of Kershaw; and her granddaughter.

The family will receive friends at home.

Donald McClurkin

CHESTER - Mr. Donald Oday "Fay" McClurkin of 110 Odom St. died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, in Columbia.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ronald McClurkin officiating and Pastor Paul F. Long, the Revs. Jessie Boulware, Eugene Canty and Moses Lightner assisting.

Burial will be at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mr. McClurkin was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Simmons of Chester. He attended Finley High School. He worked for the city of Chester.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Diane Sanders-McClurkin; his daughter, Trina Degraffenreid of Rock Hill; seven brothers, the Rev. Ronald McClurkin, Roosevelt McClurkin, Frank McClurkin and James Boyd, all of Chester, John Robert McClurkin of Baltimore, and Tommy Lee Thompson and Mike Thompson, both of Spartanburg; seven sisters, Shirley Wilkes, Rosa Lee Edwards, Bessie Simmons and Lois Simmons, all of Chester, Barbara Ann Smith and Judy Brown, both of Spartanburg and Azalee Young of Baltimore; and two grandsons.

The family will receive friends at home and the home of L. A. Simmons, 115 McClure St. in Chester.

Elaine Rapp

TEGA CAY - Mrs. Elaine Schneeberger Rapp, 52, of 29013 Silver Fox, formerly of Daniels, W.Va, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at home.

A native of LaCrosse, Wis., Mrs. Rapp was a daughter of George W. Schneeberger and Alyce B. Schneeberger. She was a U.S. Army nurse during the Vietnam War. She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Donald Fredrick Rapp; two sons, Bryan Benjamin Rapp of Richmond, Va., and Derek Nicholas Rapp of Morgantown, W. Va.; her brother, Don Schneeberger of Mcquon, Wis.; two sisters, Alyce Jane Wehrenberg of LaCrosse, Wis., and Mary Ellen Bambrick of Charlottesville, Va.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.
