FREDERICK F. PADGETT

Frederick F. Padgett, 82, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000. Born Aug. 8, 1918 in Marinette, Wis., he was a son of the late Fred Roy and Margaret Queever Padgett. He grew up in northern Wisconsin. He spent 2˝ years in the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet during World War II. He attended the University of Wisconsin for 1˝ years and Washington and Lee University for two years. Mr. Padgett moved to Sumter in 1967 when he became the general manager for Sunbeam Appliance Company in Manning. From there he became the Sunbeam Company’s industrial relations manager for six plants in five Southern states. Upon his retirement from Sunbeam, Mr. Padgett managed Dial Page of Sumter. He was active in the local community as a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Rotary International, past state director of the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce and active member of St. Anne Catholic Church for 33 years. Mr. Padgett was an avid golfer and plated weekly as a member of the YUASA Exide League. Survivors include his wife, Ruth E. Padgett of Sumter; two sons, Rick Padgett and his wife, Lorraine, and Paul Padgett and his wife, Christie; two daughters, Connie Tietz and her husband, Paul, and Pat Sears and her husband, Tommy; two sisters, Betty Demeuse of Sheboygan, Wis, and Mary Lou Girard of Menominee, Mich.; several nieces and nephews; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Francis Padgett; and three sisters, Cecile Whitton, Leone Reno and Peggy Soults. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at St. Anne Catholic Church, with Father McKay officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the Knights of Columbus. A wake service will be held in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday, with rosary at 7 p.m. Memorials may be sent of Hospice Care of Tri-County, 21 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150, or The Bernadin House, Columbia. Bullock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LUCILLE S. SANDERS

Lucille Service Sanders died Friday Oct. 6, 2000, at Mariner Healthcare West of Sumter. Mrs. Sanders was born March 1, 1911, in Lee County. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a member of Salem Baptist Church. Survivors include three grandchildren, Andrew Mae Service, Andrew Service Jr. and Levelle Anthony, all of Sumter; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Mack Sanders and Thomas Service; and a son, Andrew Service Sr. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 26 in the chapel of Community Funeral Home, 353 Manning Ave., Sumter, with Bishop Jeffery Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bradford Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 214 King St. Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ABRIELIA M. SMITH

Abrielia Mitchell Smith, 88, widow of Dr. Frank C. Smith, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Clark County, Ky., she was a daughter of the late George Mulligan Mitchell and Margaret Ferguson Mitchell. Mrs. Smith was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church. She grew up in the mountains of eastern Kentucky and attended Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky. She was a nurse for 30 years in Little Rock, Ark., before moving to Sumter in 1982. Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Mitchell of Richmond, Ky., and Edith Mitchell of Los Angeles, Calif.; four nephews, Wallace E. Mitchell of Sumter, Dr. William H. Mitchell of Richmond, Ky., and Ron Mitchell and Dwain Mitchell, both of Los Angeles, Calif. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tommy Comer officiating. Memorials may be made to Alice Drive Baptist Church. FLORENCE — Alma Pack Terrell, 83, widow of Lake E. Terrell Jr., died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, in a Florence health care facility. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Alva Pack Sr. Mrs. Terrell graduated with honors from Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga., and made her home for many years in Sumter, where she taught in Edmunds High School and Sumter Area Technical College. Survivors include two sons, Lake E. Terrell III of Jacksonville, Fla., and Hilton P. Terrell of Florence; a daughter, Elaine Goosmann of Ashville, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Alva S. Pack Jr. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Alexander officiating. A committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Sumter. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence. RONALD SINGLETON

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Ronald Singleton died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Born Aug. 23, 1958, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late William Singleton and Susan Holliday Singleton. He joined Antioch UME Church in Rimini in his youth and attended the public schools of Clarendon County. Survivors include two daughters, Beatrice Singleton and Keisha Singleton, both of Sumter; three brothers, Louis Singleton of Sumter, Franklin Singleton of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Maris Singleton of Pinewood; three sisters, Amelia Saunders, Ella Nora Baxter and Minnie Boyd, all of Pinewood; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at New Hope AME Church cemetery, with the Rev. Joseph Postell officiating. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

LYNCHBURG — Margaret Johnson, widow of Joe Johnson, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Carolina Hospital Systems in Florence. Born Jan. 12, 1920, in St. Charles, she was a daughter of the late Robert Hooks and Annie Laws Moore. Educated in the public schools of Lee County, she was a faithful member of Mt. Pleasant AME Church and later joined St. Peter AME Church, where she served as a member of the Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Skyway Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 351. Survivors include seven sons, William Johnson, David Johnson and Joe Johnson Jr., all of Lynchburg, Simon Johnson of Marion, Leroy Johnson of Florence, Jerry Johnson of Seat Pleasant, Md., and Levern Johnson of Forestville, Md.; two daughters, Julia Sullivan of Washington, D.C., and Minnie McElveen of Lynchburg; 29 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at St. Peter AME Church, with the Rev. Francis Dennison, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery. MANNING — Edna Owens Perry, 77, wife of William Haun Perry, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born July 16, 1923, in Knoxville, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Harrison Owens and Mabel Hilton Owens. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Manning and the Fidelis Sunday school class. Survivors besides her husband of Manning include three daughters, Jean Kelly and her husband, James, of Sanford, N.C., Elaine Tatum and her husband, Robert, of Garner, N.C., and Cheryl Staab and her husband, Ken, of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Manning, with the Dr. David O. Anderson Sr. officiating and Dr. William J. Holmes assisting. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Manning Lion’s Club. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of the church and other times at the home, 110 Meadow Drive, Manning. PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Maude McManus, 92, widow of W.R. McManus, formerly of Walterboro, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, in Portsmouth, Va. Born March 9, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Lee Herndon and Ella Padgett Herndon. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Sumter. Survivors include a son, Edward H. McManus of Portsmouth, Va.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Willie Mae McManus and Margaret E. McManus. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Live Oak Cemetery in Walterboro and will be conducted by Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home. CHARLESTON — Robert C. “Jeff” Riley, 46, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Born Jan. 28, 1954, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Washington Riley and Juanita Fulton Riley. He received his formal education at Walker-Gamble Elementary School and graduated from Burke High School in Charleston. He was a member of Morris Brown AME Church in Charleston. Survivors include four aunts, Sara Poindexter of Alexandria, Va., Evelyn Daniels of Detroit, Mich., Jmetta Riley of New Zion and Mary Fulton of Kingstree; and a cousin who was reared as a sister, Jonell McFadden of New Zion. The family will receive friends at the home of his cousin, Norrell McFadden Sr. and Jonell McFadden, Route 1, Box 1368, S.C. 527 in New Zion. Alex Goodman, 75, widower of Ethel Goodman, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Mariner Healthcare East of Sumter. Born March 5, 1925, in Marlboro County, he was a son of Huey and Laura Goodman. He was educated in the public schools of Marlboro County and was employed by Boyle Machinery Co. for 37 years before retiring in 1984. Survivors include five sons, James Thomas Cooper of Roxbury, Mass., James Earl Cooper of Worchester, Md., Alex Goodman Jr. of Norfolk, Va., Sammie Lee Goodman of Sumter and Floyd Hancock Goodman of Columbia; three daughters, Linda Goodman of the home, Loretta G. White of Sumter and Deloris Goodman of Sumter; 23 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Moore. Services will be 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Services Inc. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. Luke Douglas, widower of Mary Ruth Douglas, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 29, 1920, in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Doc Glenn and Mable Warren Douglas. Mr. Douglas was a loving father. Survivors include four sons, William Albert Hayden and Glenn L. Douglas, both of Sumter, Billy L. Douglas of Camden and Danny R. Douglas of Alabama; Four daughters, Mary E. Smith and Cynthia L. Mr. Spires was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church of Sumter and was retired from Santee Print Works. Charles G. Turner, 64, husband of Nell Hall Turner, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Elbert Turner and the late Viola Hudson Turner. He was retired from Best Lumber and Millworks. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Charles Kenneth Turner and Gordon McGary Turner, both of Columbia; a daughter, Tammy Hires of Hilda; four stepsons, Ronny Hall, Keith Hall and Timmy Hall, all of Sumter, and Ricky L. Hall of Columbia; one stepdaughter, Lisa Douglas of Sumter; three sisters, Ruby Pritchard of Sumter and Louise Miller and Jeanette Cox, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Turner and Thomas Turner; and a sister, Mary Anne Snyder. Frierson Wilson, husband of Gussie Aiken Wilson, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 9, 1918, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Amita Wilson Richardson and Frierson Wilson Sr. Mr. Frierson received his education in the public schools of Sumter and graduated from Morris High School in 1937. He was owner and operator of Sumter Taxi Service, where he provided services for more than 45 years. Survivors include a son, Willie Davis of Walton Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Anita Louise Sarley of Newark, N.J., and Bernice Douglas of Sumter; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Thomas and a brother, Wilbur Richardson. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home, with the Rev. Frank Williams Sr. officiating and the Rev. Ernest Jackson assisting. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. MANNING — Billy Ray Geddings, 60, died recently at his home in Manning. Born in Sumter, he was a son of J.D. Geddings and the late Ann Geddings High. Survivors besides his father of Greenwood include a son, Billy M. Geddings of Sumter; two daughters, Terri Shelley and Sonya Galloway, both of Sumter; two sisters, Cynthia Elmore of Bishopville and Daisy Scurry of Darlington; and four grandchildren. Mr. Geddings was preceded in death by a son, Jessie Geddings. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Frances Strickland officiating. Burial was in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry DuBose, Ronny Shelley, Danny Galloway, Bruce Galloway, Sammy Tidwell and Joe Tidwell. Frances W. Younginer, 87, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Strothers, she was a daughter of the late Joe Frank Watson and Irene E. Blair Watson. Mrs. Younginer was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter of Sumter and the Ladies Auxiliary for 56 years. Survivors include a son, Francis “Frank” R. Kolb of Sumter; a daughter, Elizabeth Y. Love of Sumter; two sisters, Irene Armour of Columbia and Hannie W. Richbourg of Charleston; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 238 N. SARDINIA — Charles W. James Sr. died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at a Sumter nursing home. Born Nov. 9, 1914, in Brent, Ala., he was a son of the late Charles Marion James and Carrie Flagler James. Mr. James was a member and former deacon of Sardinia Presbyterian Church. He was a World War II veteran and retired from civil service. Survivors include his wife, Erma Floyd James of Sardinia; a son, Charles W. James Jr. of Lexington; a daughter, Janice Ann Moulton of Sumter; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sardinia Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gordon K. Reed officiating. Burial will be in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery. BATESBURG-LEESVILLE — Tommy “Tony T” Holloway, 61, of Route 8, died Sunday, July 23, 2000. Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was a son of Claude Delbert Holloway and the late Bessie Mae Loughridge. Mr. Holloway attended Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a self-employed computer salesman and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Donna Davis Holloway; two daughters, Cheryl Kirby of Sumter and Dana Summons of Greenville; three sons, Terrell Holloway of Sumter, Mike Holloway of Pasco, Wash., and Tommy Holloway of Lake City; three brothers, Jerry Holloway and John B. Holloway, both of Rossville, Ga., and Wayne Holloway of Jacksonville, Fla.; and five grandchildren. Lorene “Blossom” Brown Vanburen Green died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 6, 1903, in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Sylvia Pringle Brown. Mrs. Green joined Liberty Hill AME Church in 1947. Survivors include a son, Willie Vanburen of Sumter; four grandchildren she reared, Morris Vanburen and Reva Vanburen, both of Orlando, Fla., Mary Lang of Homestead, Fla., and Evangelist Frances Washington of Sumter; three stepdaughters, Mary Bracey of Manning, Susie Mae Felder of Summerton and Erica Vermell Rose; a stepbrother, Julius Brown of Whitesville, N.C.; two stepsisters, Wilemenia and Frances Brown, both of Whitesville, N.C.; 28 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 44 great-great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Malachi Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. GREELEYVILLE — Cheryl Lynn Brewer Woodard died Sunday, July 23, at the Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston. Born Sept. 25, 1974, in Big Sandy, Texas, Mrs. Woodard was a daughter of Twyleen Purdy Gibson and the late Don Branson Brewer Jr., and a stepdaughter of Maynard Gibson. She attended Philadelphia Church of God in Cameron. Survivors besides her mother and stepfather of Selma, N.C., include her husband, Kevin Woodard of Greeleyville; a daughter, Sarah Daniel Woodard of Greeleyville; two brothers, Don Branson Brewer III and Steven Brewer, both of Selma; and two sisters, Cynthia Gayl Morris and Myra Eason, both of Selma. Services will be held at a later date in North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

SAUL S. TURNER

Saul S. Turner, 66, husband of Imogene S. Turner, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Clifton and Effie Brewer Turner. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, John Turner and Keith Turner, both of Sumter; two daughters, Shirley J. Price of Niceville, Fla., and Faye Turner of Hickory, N.C.; two brothers, Rufus Turner of Pinewood and Stubs Turner of Sumter; two sisters, Ruth Mathis and Lois Yarborough, both of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Turner was preceded in death by two brothers, Hazel Turner and Isadore Turner, and a sister, Geneva Lloyd. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Turner and G.W. Harrell officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Nazarene Cemetery. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the home, 4325 Lisa Drive. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Timmy Ray Beasley, 40, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at his home. Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

MARIE M. SIMON

Marie McDuffie Simon died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, in Paterson, N.J. Born Aug. 7, 1926, in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late Nellie and Marshall McDuffie. The family will receive friends at the home of Willie Simon, 2490 Brogden Circle. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

LOEL H. STOUT

Loel Ann Henderson Stout died today, Sept. 27, 2000, in San Antonio, Texas. Born June 24, 1967, at Shaw Air Force Base, she was a daughter of Lowell Joe Henderson and Annie Dennis Henderson. Services will be announced by D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville, Va.

GLADYS R. BRADLEY

COLUMBIA — Gladys Robinson Bradley, wife of Walter Bradley, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born March 14, 1941, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late James Robinson Sr. and Modena McFadden Robinson. Mrs. Bradley accepted Christ as her personal savior in her youth. She was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church. She attended Sumter County public schools. Survivors besides her husband of the home in Sumter include a son, Melvin Bradley of Sumter; a sister, Priscilla Bradley of Sumter; and a grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie Lee Bradley and Charles Jerome Bradley; and a brother, James Robinson. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. O.S. Scott, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Cornell Dukes. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Ushers of Mulberry Baptist Church and friends of the family will be pallbearers. The funeral procession will leave at 3:15 p.m. from the home, 826 Boulevard Road. The family will receive friends at the home. Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JERRI R. DERRICK

COLUMBIA — Jerri R. Derrick, 40, wife of Andy Derrick, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Lexington Medical Center. Born in Korea on June 10, 1960, she was a daughter of Bobby Robinson and Barbara Fulmer Robinson. Mrs. Derrick was a quality assurance specialist with Care Compass Inc. Survivors besides her husband of Columbia and her parents, both of Sumter, include two brothers, Kendall Robinson of Sumter and Carl Robinson of Langley Air Force Base, Va.; and her grandmother, Margaret L. Fulmer of Leesville. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Greenlawn Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Mark J. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 400 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29206. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PAULINE R. HALEY

MANNING — Pauline Ridgeway Haley, 69, wife of Oliver C. Haley, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born Aug. 7, 1931, in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late Dickson and Octave Holliday Ridgeway. Mrs. Haley was a member of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, Glen Haley of Manning; a daughter, Joyce Haley of Manning; a brother, Wayne Ridgeway of Manning; two sisters, Irma R. Turner of Pelion and Betty R. Alewine of Lexington; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Ridgeway; and two sisters, Vera Hodge and Virginia Strange. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today in Clarendon Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Charlie Salter officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Glen Haley, Bloomville Road, Manning. Memorials may be made to Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church or to a charity of one’s choice. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
