Mattie Ross Lary, 83, widow of Wilton J. Lary, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 22, 1916, in Dorchester County, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Bessie Calhoun Ross. The family will receive friends at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, James and Bernice Blair, 920 Collins St., Sumter, and at the home of her daughter, Mary L. Lary, 756 Harrison Road, Dorchester. Services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

LITTLEJOHN BLANTON

CONWAY — Littlejohn Blanton, 76, of Betty Street, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, in Conway Hospital following an illness. Born in Miami, Fla., he was a son of the late Murray P. and Johnnie Johnson Blanton. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Conway and the Angler Sunday School Class. Mr. Blanton was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, and was a member and past commander of the American Legion, Horry Post No. 111, and was awarded American Legionnaire of the Year in 1992 and 1999. He was a member of Conway Masonic Lodge No. 65 AFM, Conway Kiwanis Club and was nominated for Kiwanian of The Year in 1992. He was a former member of Conway Planning Commission and former member of Conway Housing Authority. He owned and operated a grocery store in North Conway for 25 years, and at the time, served two terms as Horry County coroner. Mr. Blanton retired from Wick’s Corporation in 1981 as a contractor salesman. Survivors include his wife, Eula Mae Thompkins Blanton of Conway; three daughters, Dianne “Butch” Rabon of Conway, and Brenda Gaddy and Wanda Broome, both of Myrtle Beach; a sister, Dorothy Morris of New Zion; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Conway with the Rev. Steve Hadden and the Rev. Carl Harris officiating. Entombment with Masonic Rites will be in Hillcrest Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. Evelyn Nesbitt Carraway, 64, widow of Samuel L. “Roy” Carraway Sr., died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Olanta, she was a daughter of the late Henry David Nesbitt and Martha Ann Windham Nesbitt. Mrs. Carraway was a member of Bondovlove Baptist Church and manager of the Bultman Drive Branch of Carraway Cleaners. Survivors include a son, Samuel L. Carraway Jr. of Sumter; three daughters, Brenda Flanagan of Sumter, Martha Partin of Willow Springs, N.C., and Cynthia Carraway of Higginville, Mo.; a brother, David Eugene Nesbitt Sr. of Sumter; two sisters, Dot Maple and Hilda Sullivan, both of Elgin; and seven grandchildren, Sam Edward Carraway, Louise Carraway, Michelle Geddings, Mickey Kelly, Troy Kelly, Jessica Partin and Travis Partin. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Roy Neal Newman Carraway; and a sister, Betty Ann Compton. Elizabeth Rouse Colclough, wife of Marion Colclough Sr., died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 14, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Spain Rouse and Easter Rouse. Mrs. Colclough was baptized at Clark United Methodist Church. She attended Clark School in her early childhood, and later attended Lincoln High School. Survivors besides her husband of the home include six sons, Marion, Charles, Floyd, Alonza, Carl and Jeffrey Colclough, all of Sumter; three daughters, Joline Colclough Wilson of Bronx, N.Y., Margaret Colclough Clay of Sumter and Jacqueline Colclough Alston of Bronx, N.Y.; a sister, Louise Eagan of New York; 22 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Jacob, Isaac, Ozie and Jeffrey Rouse; and four sisters, Mable McCoy, Rebecca Bowen, Gladys Clay and Jeanette Merrimom. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Clark United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Lawson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. H.B. Shaw. MANNING — Hattie Mae Dennis, 67, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born July 4, 1932, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Badger Dennis and Janie Johnson Dennis. In her youth she joined Laurel Hill AME Church in Davis Station. Later she joined Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the gospel choir and the usher board. She attended Clarendon County public schools, including Spring School in the Davis Crossroad community. She was employed for over 30 years at Alsbrook Grocery and Minute Men Market. Survivors include four sons, Willie Lee Dennis of Ft. Hood, Texas, Leroy Dennis of Manning, Larry Lee Dennis of Sumter and Johnny Lee Dennis of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Georgia Ann Conyers and Matreylee Garris, both of Manning; a sister, Rosa Lee Prince of Manning; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Dennis; and a sister, Jannie Mae Dupree. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church with the Rev. G.K. Carter, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. C. Smith and the Rev. L. Burgess. Burial will be in the church cemetery. LARGO, Fla. — William Stanley Dion, 72, husband of Nancy Eargle Dion and formerly of Manning, S.C., died Monday, March 6, 2000, at the Veterans Medical Center in Bay Pines, Fla. Born Oct. 7, 1927, in Patchogue, N.Y., he was a son of the late Albert F. and Elizabeth Schenke Dion. He was a retired electrical contractor, a World War II and Korean War U.S. Navy veteran, a member and past Worshipful Master of St. Peter’s Masonic Lodge No. 54 in Manning, and a member of Seminole First Baptist Church in Seminole, Fla. Survivors besides his wife of Largo, formerly of Columbia and Manning, include a son, Glenn Dion of Largo; two daughters, Cynthia Balentine of San Antonio, Texas, and Vivian Dion-Miller of Seminole, Fla.; four sisters, Edna L’Hommedeau of Brentwood, N.Y., Clara Suckow of Columbia, Ruth Balle of Melbourne, Fla., and Patricia Morgan of Columbia, S.C.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Albert and John. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning with the Rev. ALCOLU — Hattie Collins Fleming, 64, wife of Venro Fleming Sr., died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Aug. 10, 1935, in Williamsburg Co., she was a daughter of the late Cecil Collins and Ernestine Parker Collins. Mrs. Fleming attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth she joined St. James Baptist Church in Greeleyville. After her marriage, she became a member of Howard Chapel AME Church in New Zion. Survivors besides her husband of the home include seven sons, Venro Fleming Jr., Eddie Fleming and James Lee Fleming, all of Alcolu, Elbert Fleming of Richmond, Va., Joseph Fleming of New Milford, Conn., Albert Fleming of Greeleyville and Carl Fleming of Bridgeport, Conn.; a daughter, Patricia Fleming of Alcolu; a stepdaughter, Margarite Queen of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Easter Chatman of Greeleyville; 32 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Marion Lewis Gayle Jr., widower of Rosa Balls Gayle, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 7, 1928, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Marion Gayle Sr. and Rosa Lee Cokley Gayle. Mr. Gayle attended Orangehill RMUE Church in his youth. He attended Sumter County public schools. He began his career in farming, and he retired in 1985 after being employed in the construction industry. Survivors include two sons, James Balls of Washington, D.C., and Raymond Balls of Sumter; a brother, William Gayle Jr. of Sumter; five sisters, Birdie Ray and Sarah Bird, both of Bronx, N.Y., and Martha Clark, Katie Brown and Eliza Ball, all of Sumter; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two children, Coleman and Willie Ball; and a brother, William Gayle. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Orangehill RMUE Church in Wedgefield with the Rev. Thomas Junious, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Eli Gregg, 59, husband of Mary Ruth Hodge Gregg, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 14, 1941, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Joe Gregg and Para Lee Jaminson Gregg. Mr. Gregg was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church. He attended Sumter County public schools. He retired from the Florence Concrete Company of Sumter, where he had been employed for many years. Survivors besides his wife of the home include a son, Carlo Gregg of Sumter; two daughters, Tonya Gregg and Shanora Gregg, both of the home; two brothers, Joe Gregg of the home and Johnnie Lee Gregg of Harrisburg, Pa.; two grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Gregg and J.P. Gregg; and a sister, Luella McKnight. BISHOPVILLE — Jim Isaac, husband of Mary Lou Mack Isaac, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born May 10, 1933, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Theo and Percell Isaac. Mr. Isaac attended Lee County public schools. He was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of the home include five sons, Marvin L. Isaac and Theo Isaac, both of New Jersey, James Isaac and Carl Isaac, both of Virginia, and Terrance Isaac of Bishopville; a daughter, Amelia Isaac of the home; two sisters, Shirley Thompson and Jessie Brown, both of Baltimore, Md.; an aunt, Janie Mae Anderson of Lamar; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Enid Aileen Powell, 88, widow of Everett W. “Jake” Powell, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at a local nursing center. Mrs. Powell was a daughter of the late Robert Bertram Huntley and Blanche Huntley. A British Colonial, she was born and reared in Rangoon, Burma, migrating to Cambridge, England, in her early 20s. After marrying an American Air Force pilot and moving to the United States in 1951, she became an American citizen in 1958. Survivors include a son, Lloyd Barraclough of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Valerie White of St. Louis, Mo.; five grandchildren, Rory, Howard and Richard Barraclough, Loidene Sweeney and Vanessa White; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman West and Cedric West. She was a member and past treasurer of the Order of Eastern Star, Iris Chapter No. 149, past president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Sumter, past treasurer of the American Cancer Society, Sumter Chapter, and was a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. Survivors include a son, David B. Raffield of Columbia; a sister, Hollis Kellis of Timmonsville; a granddaughter, Alicia R. Brown of Sumter; and a great-granddaughter, Patricia Laken Brown. BALTIMORE, Md. — Johnny Brunson died Thursday morning, March 9, 2000, at his home after an illness. Born Nov. 11, 1932, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Willie Brunson and Sallie James Brunson. Mr. Brunson attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth he joined Society Hill A.M.E. Church. After moving to Baltimore, he joined Kenway Bible Baptist Church. Mr. Brunson was first married to the late Edith White Brunson, and then to Barbara Brunson. Survivors besides his wife of Baltimore include two sons, Jonathan Brunson of Baltimore and Joey Brunson of Florida; four sisters, Rovinia Watson of Manning, S.C., Alice Nesmith of Baltimore, and Bertha Moore and Jessie Hardy, both of Philadelphia, Pa. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvin Brunson and Willie Brunson; and a sister, Earline Jackson. GABLE — Bernard “Chubby” Cooper, 28, husband of Sharon Renee Bradford Cooper, died Friday morning, March 10, 2000, at his home on McFadden Road after a sudden illness. Born Nov. 30, 1971, in the New Zion community of Clarendon County, he was a son of Myers “Gabby” McFadden Jr. and Mary Ruth Cooper. He attended Walker-Gamble Elementary School in New Zion and was a 1991 graduate of East Clarendon High School in Turbeville. In his youth he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined Melina Presbyterian Church U.S.A. He served in the U.S. Army. Survivors besides his wife of Manning, his father of Turbeville and his mother of Gable include two sons, Joshua Cooper and Christopher Cooper, both of Manning; three daughters, Brianna Cooper, Amber Cooper and Audreanna Bradford, all of Manning; three foster brothers, Oneal Cooper of Gable, John Cooper of New Zion and Michael Cooper of Alcolu; a stepbrother, Naki Cooper of Manning; and a stepsister, Miesha Cooper of Gable. Beverly J. Degnan, 66, widow of Jack F. Degnan, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born in Chicago, Ill., she was a daughter of the late Walter Craddock and Ida Crester Craddock. Beverly was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be sorely missed by all. Surviving are three sons, Jack Degnan Jr. of Dyer, Ind., Mark Degnan and his wife, Halina Degnan, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Tim Degnan and his wife, Krissie Degnan, of Sumter; two sisters, Ethel Krajewski and her husband, Al, of Indiana, and Joyce Ebey and her husband, Ed, of Wisconsin; two brothers, Carl Craddock and his wife, Judy, of Illinois and Paul Craddock of Wisconsin; and seven grandchildren, Jack Degnan III, Matthew Degnan, Rebecca Degnan, Mark Degnan Jr. and his wife, Laura, Lindy Degnan, Brittany Degnan and Caroline Degnan. Born Jan. 20, 1945, in Moncks Corner, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Allison E. Nesbitt and Eugenia Mims Nesbitt of Mayesville, S.C. She was a retired grocery store produce manager and attended Gethsemane Baptist Church. She was married to Enoch Flood on May 19, 1962. Survivors besides her husband include two daughters, Michelle F. Bridges of Statesville and Kris Douglas and her husband, Joel, of Statesville; seven grandchildren, Jessica Alexander, Chloe Wilfong, Brittany Douglas, Kyzer Wilfong, Josh Wilfong, Sam Wilfong and Chandler Douglas; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, the Rev. John and Juanita Flood of Statesville. PINEWOOD — Demetriak “Derek” Baxter, 21, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born March 23, 1979, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Herbert Baxter Sr. and Katie Mae Conyers Baxter. OLANTA — Jennifer Gathers Felder, 25, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence after an illness. She was a daughter of the late James Lee Gathers and Felicia Gathers. The family will receive friends at the home of her grandparents, Earnest and Daisy McFadden, 4132 Swann Road, Olanta. Services will be announced by Green’s Funeral Home in Lake City.

ELIZABETH T. HARVEY

A memorial service for Elizabeth “Bettie” Tindal Harvey, who died Feb. 17, 2000, will be held at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, March 12, at Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood with the Rev. Gene Franklin, pastor, officiating. Born May 19, 1922, she was a daughter of late George and Cora Tindal of Pinewood.

ELIES VAUGHN

Elies Vaughn died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 17, 1954, in Sumter County, he was a son of Henry and Willie Mae Benbow Vaughn. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, Willie Mae Vaughn, 4805 Cannery Road. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

SAM CAMPBELL JR.

HORATIO — Sam Campbell Jr., widower of Mary Campbell, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Jan. 5, 1911, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Sam Campbell Sr. and Sarah Lebrew Campbell. Mr. Campbell was a lifelong member of Willow Grove AME Church, where he was honored as man of the year, father of the church and the oldest male member of the congregation. He also sang in the senior choir. He attended Sumter County public schools and was previously employed in the construction business; however, he spent most of his life farming. Survivors include five sons, William S. Campbell and Wallace Campbell, both of Washington, D.C., Francis Campbell of Dalzell, Sammie Campbell of Horatio and Stevenson “Freddie” Campbell of Columbia; four daughters, Dorothy Howard and Mary Ree Ramsey, both of Sumter, Irene Simmons of Cross, and Preshes Wilson of Horatio; 32 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susie Campbell Mitchell; two brothers, David and Marcus Campbell; and two sisters, Nancy Atkinson and Mattie Burkett. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Willow Grove AME Church in Horatio with the Rev. Vernon Dixon, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Heyward Hinton and the Rev. Frankie Thomas. Burial will be in the High Hill AME Church Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 7565 Richbow Road, Horatio. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

FRED DOUGHTY

SUMMERTON — Fred “Freddie” Doughty, 50, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Mariner Healthcare of Sumter in Sumter. Born Sept. 9, 1949, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Ruth Stukes Doughty and the late Willie C. Doughty. Mr. Doughty was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton, and he attended Sumter Area Technical College in Sumter. He served a tour of duty in the U.S. Army. He was a former member of Taw Caw Baptist Church in Summerton. Later he joined Manning Church of Christ. Survivors besides his mother include a son, Fred A. Doughty Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Demetrius Doughty of Baltimore; four brothers, Willie J. Doughty of Davis Station, Charles Doughty of Baltimore, Randolph Doughty of Columbia and Dwayne Doughty of the home; three sisters, Barbara McCray of Lynchburg, Sharon Richardson of Silver Spring, Md., and Rosalind Doughty of Summerton; and a grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Manning Church of Christ with Minister Halbert Tucker officiating, assisted by the Rev. Neolis Johnson Jr. and Bishop Verlene Doughty. Burial will be in Taw Caw Baptist Church Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of his mother, Moses Dingle Road, Route 3, P.O. Box 21, in the Davis Station community. The family will receive friends at the same home. Summerton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

GENEVA B. GRAHAM

GREELEYVILLE — Geneva Britt Graham, 86, widow of James F. Graham, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Roper Hospital in Charleston. Born July 12, 1913, in Lakeview, she was a daughter of the late Monroe Britt and Vera Hayes Britt. Mrs. Graham was a retired LPN in Charleston and a member of Greeleyville Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Glenda Biegner of Greeleyville, Charlotte Martin of Charleston and Bonnie Tucker of Newport, N.C.; a sister, Eva Hammond of Greenville, N.C.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Mount Hope Cemetery in Greeleyville with the Rev. Hampton I. Perry officiating. Grandsons, Mark Condon, David Biegner, John Loy, Shawn Foster, Jimmy Funderburk and Bruce Tucker, will be pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Stephens Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

CARRIE HINES

MANNING — Carrie Brunson Stokes Hines, 62, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at her home, 315 Lantern Lane, after an extended illness. Born June 26, 1937, in Manning, she was a daughter of Julia Fordham Brunson and the late John Preston Brunson. Mrs. Hines attended Manning Training School in Manning and Sumter Area Technical College in Sumter. On April 6, 1975, she was baptized into the congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was first married to Everett W. Stokes Sr. and then to the late Oliver Hines. Survivors besides her mother of Manning include two sons, Ronald Stokes and Everett Stokes Jr., both of Manning; two daughters, Carolyn Sherod and Wandalyn Stokes, both of Anderson; a sister, Sallie B. Johnson of Manning; an adopted brother, George Fordham of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 20 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, U.S. 521 East, Manning, with Brother Edward C. Ross Sr. officiating, assisted by Brother General Benbow. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Sallie B. Johnson, 418 Drayton St. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MANNING — Ruth Bryant Jones, 80, wife of Freddie L. Jones, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born July 21, 1919, she was a daughter of the late George T. and Beula Carraway Bryant. Mrs. Jones was retired from Campbell’s Soup in Sumter. She was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church. Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Eddie M. Bryant of Moyock, N.C., and William Scott Jones of Manning; two sisters, Dorothy Jauncey of San Diego, Calif., and Elizabeth Poole of Manning; and two stepsons, Jimmy Jones of Georgia and Jerry Jones of Georgetown. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Home Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hall officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tony Geddings, Joey Mendiola, McDowell Geddings, Thomas Bryant, George Bryant and Mel Brown. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Home Branch Baptist Church in Manning. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
