JAMES E. BETRAND Jr.

MANNING -- James Edward Betrand Jr., 61, husband of Evelyn McFadden Betrand, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born March 31, 1943, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Joshua Edward Betrand and Estell Anderson Betrand. He received his formal education at Scott's Branch High School, Summerton. In his youth, he joined New Light Missionary Baptist Church, Davis Station. He was a retired employee of Korn Industries of Sumter.

Survivors include three sons, Jeffery Betrand of Columbia, Pastor James Edward (Frieda) Betrand III of Manning and David Betrand of Covington, Ga.; two daughters, Brenda Lee Betrand of Hollywood, Fla., and Loretta Betrand of Manning; one brother, Lewis Betrand of Thomasville, N.C.; two sisters, Bessie Robinson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ruby Mae Parker of Hartsville; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

The remains will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church, U.S. 15 South, Silver community, Pinewood, with the Rev. Ollie J. Hannah, pastor, Pastor James E. Betrand III, eulogist, assisting the Rev. Johnny Lawson and Minister Teresa Bracey.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

Floral bearers will be nieces.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 5154 J.W. Carter Road, Ram Bay community, Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ANNIE JANE J. BLAKLEY

Annie Jane Jeffords Blakley, age 73, of Ladson, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at a local hospital.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Church of God the Prophecy, 4032 Meeting St., North Charleston, SC 29405. Interment to follow at Carolina Memorial Park.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406.

Survivors include her husband, Foster Blakley of Ladson; three sons, Richard Jeffords of Goose Creek, Paul Wayne Jeffords of Summerville and Jesse Laverne Jeffords of Sumter. Also included are 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four brothers, Melvin Moore of Colonial Heights, Va., Paul Moore of Turbeville, William Moore of Anderson and Robert Moore of Myrtle Beach; one sister, Dorothy Leon of North Charleston; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Jesse Jeffords, and a son, Larry Jeffords.

Mrs. Blakley was born on Nov. 22, 1930, in Hobokan, Ga., to the late Alvin T. Moore and the late Belle Cruz Moore. Mrs. Blakley worked in housekeeping for Roper Hospital. She was a member of Church of God the Prophecy in North Charleston. She taught Sunday school and was a leader of the church care group.

SAMUEL L. MATHIS

BISHOPVILLE -- Samuel LeRush Mathis, 75, husband of 55 years to Lois Galloway Mathis, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004.

Born July 14, 1929, in the Springhill community of Lee County, he was a son of the late Charlie O. Mathis and the late Dessie Hawkins Mathis. Mr. Mathis was a member of St. John United Methodist Church at Springhill and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was the owner of Mathis Auto Sales and Mathis Auto Parts in Bishopville for more than 50 years. He loved to travel and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was also an early pioneer and sponsor of stock car racing. He was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party.

Survivors besides his wife of Bishopville include a daughter, Debra Shoemaker and her husband, Steve, of Irmo; two grandchildren, Chelsea Shoemaker and Samuel Shoemaker; a brother-in-law, James Huggins of Lugoff; a sister-in-law, Easter Mathis of Sumter; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and three devoted cats.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Osteen Mathis, and a sister, Oleta Mathis Huggins.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Piedmont cemetery with the Rev. Dale Warren officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Bishopville Rescue Squad Inc., P.O. Box 487, Bishopville, SC 29010.

GEORGIA MAE JACKSON-DURANT

Mrs. Georgia Mae Jackson-Durant died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born in Sumter County on March 29, 1935, she was the daughter and fourth child of the late Reuben Jackson and Jannie LaGrant Jackson. Georgia Mae, affectionately called "So," was raised in Mayesville. She attended the public schools of Sumter County and completed her education at the Goodwill School. Over the years, "So" was employed as a seamstress and also worked for many years at the Holiday Inn in Sumter. At an early age, "So" became a member of Goodwill Presbyterian Church and later joined St. Mark United Methodist Church in Mayesville. She served faithfully at St. Mark as a member of the stewardess and usher boards.

She was united in marriage for more than 40 years to John Durant Jr., until his passing in January 2004.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gardner Jackson.

Survivors are her children, Sammie (Mary) Jackson of Columbia, Patricia "Pat" Jackson, Sarah Jackson, Gloria Jean Jackson, Randall (Carolyn) Jackson of Sumter, and Geneva Durant of Mayesville; four siblings, Rovenia Hudson, Carrie Lou (Anthony) James, Alphonza "Jack" (Queenie) Jackson, and Elouise Thomas; eight grandchildren, Fredrick Durant, Kahlil Wells, Charleeshia Jackson, Tamekia Jackson, Kevia Jackson, Jazsmine Jenkins, Isaiah Jackson, and De'Arrius Durant.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mark United Methodist Church, Mayesville, with the Rev. Eddie Thomas, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Richard Baxter and the Rev. Vermell Humes.

The remains will be placed in the church from noon until the hour of service.

Burial will be in Goodwill Presbyterian cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave at noon from the residence, 10 Republic St., Mayesville.

The family will also receive friends at 10 Republic St.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

DONETHA WHEELER

MAYESVILLE -- Donetha Wheeler, 36, died Aug. 9, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 9, 1968, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Robert Wilson and Pearline Wheeler.

The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Cherry Commander, 298 E. Sumter St., Mayesville.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

ADA LINTON

PHILADELPHIA -- Ada Linton, 83, died Aug. 6, 2004, at Cheltonham York Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Oct. 4, 1920, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Genia James Linton.

The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Neily Mouzon, 832 N. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

JULIA W. WARREN

Julia W. Warren, 84, wife of John Wiley Warren, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at a local nursing center.

Born in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Julius H. Watts and the late Rulist Dukes Watts. Mrs. Warren was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was retired from Campbell Soup Co.

She was twice married , first to the late Rollie M. Conyers.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; four sons, Charles L. Conyers, Thomas A. Conyers and Frankie "Jim" Conyers, all of Sumter, and Eugene Conyers of Alcolu; a brother, J.C. Watts of Turbeville; four sisters, Virginia Coker of Lake City, Evelyn Wilkerson of Fitzgerald, Ga., Christine Kirkland of Walterboro, and Margaret Spigner of Alcolu; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Sims.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating.

Burial will be in Trinity Methodist Church cemetery in Alcolu.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her son, 2530 Beulah Cuttino Road.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202.

REBECCA I. MARCH

BISHOPVILLE -- Mrs. Rebecca Isaac March died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at her residence.

She was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Charlotte Mack Boone.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at Greater Joy Temple Pentecostal Church, 508 W. Church St., Bishopville.

Boatwright Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

JOSEPH A. SHOCKETT

Joseph Arthur Shockett, husband of Linda Shockett, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Worcester, Mass.

Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.

RUTH M. LAW

BISHOPVILLE -- Ruth Muller Law, 88, widow of Robert Wolling Law Jr., died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004.

Born in Blythewood, she was the daughter of the late Lee Muller and the late Lottie Coyner Muller. She was a 1938 graduate of the University of South Carolina and taught in the Elliott, Hartsville and Bishopville public schools for many years. She was a member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church and a former member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Blythewood.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Wolling Law III and his wife, Jerry, of Bishopville and John Muller Law of Columbia; a daughter, Anne Law Finch of Durham, N.C.; a sister, Wilhelmina Unkefer of Winter Park, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Law Dahmen of Wake Forest, N.C., Nelson Fox Law of Louisburg, N.C., Kathryn Marley Finch of Raleigh, N.C., and Suzanne Muller Finch of Durham, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Law Dahmen and Sarah Christine Dahmen; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Muller and Fred Muller; and six sisters, Mary Lou Muller, Lucy Smith, Virginia Powers, Emma Heins, Rachel Kempson and Laura Thomas.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the St. Luke cemetery near Wisacky with the Rev. Robert Chastain officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the home, 200 S. Main St., Bishopville.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of McCoy Nursing Home for the loving care and attention given to their mother.
